Abstract:
Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde dramatizes philosophical debates over good and evil throwing light into the analysis of these concepts. By depicting opposite personalities in one character who, at times, behaves strictly morally and, at others, utterly amorally the novel raises questions, first, as to how good and evil are represented, especially evil, in the figure of the double and the monster; second, the origins of good and evil actions; and finally, the parameters used to define or categorize such actions. Both personalities mark the conflict of reason and

This essay has examined the role of science in the three classic horror stories Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and Dracula. The argument stated that the role of science in these works is changeable and constitutes both a friend and an enemy, depending on the protagonists’ motives. Viktor Frankenstein and Dr Jekyll explore science selfishly and without forethought, creating fear of uncontrollable speculation as well as unpredictable degeneration. However, the good aspects of science are later redeemed when Van Helsing and Dr Seward add human a

In this dissertation I explore the dynamics of how the definition of the human is established and subsequently challenged in both H.G. Wells’s The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896) and R.L. Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886). Late nineteenth-century Europe was a time and place where an exploration of the definition of what it means to be human was particularly uncomfortable. The structures that upheld the then accepted conceptions of the human were under assault by new scientific discourses such as Darwinist theories of evolution, criminal anthropology and degenerationism.

Abstract:
For many years, theorists have turned to popular movies and books to help interpret the difficult principles of Jacques Lacan. However, one story that has gotten very little attention is Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and its derivative body of film adaptations. Both the novella and Rouben Mamoulian’s 1931 film are a small part of an intertextual body of work which contains scenes that play out the Lacanian principles of the mirror stage and the gaze very well. Since art imitates life, an in depth exploration of the way that these scenes play out can illuminat
