The article deals with phraseological units reflecting the national linguistic picture of the world. The phraseological picture of the world, which is based on phraseological units with a topocomponent, allows a fuller representation of ethnic stereotypes of this or that linguocultural community. The existence of idioms in the language indicates the enormous spiritual potential of the people, their creativity and culture. Phraseological units are a kind of clusters of folk wisdom.

This research aims at a philological and linguistic study of the phraseologic units (PUâs) related to the specialised language used in Brazilian colonial judicial system, relative to XVIII and XIX centuries. The study comprises the semi-diplomatic edition of the documents that compose the analysis corpus, composed of 133 Autos de Querela (registers of conflicts) written between 1779 and 1829. It also comprises the structural description of the documents, the historical contextualization of the state of Ceara, the analysis and interpretation of social-historical data related to parties served and to the types of crimes perpetrated. It also includes a glossary of the PUâs used in law processes. For the selection of the PUâs we used the WordSmith Tools software, an electronic tool of Corpus Linguistics, which enabled us to establish occurrence frequencies for the classification of a PU. The research contributes to the philological studies, in the interdisciplinary perspective, whose object is the written text, analysed under different dimensions, be them linguistic or extralinguistic, by considering the cultural and socio-historical realities which reflect the tradition of a people

Thus, it is expected that in the school, as an official teaching space, didactic materials, especially books, highlight the varied manifestations of phraseological units and their relevance to teaching and learning the mother tongue. In this sense, based on the choice of the books in the collection "Vontade de Saber PortuguÃs", in the 6th and 9th grade classes, and based on the theoretical discussions and practical directions available in Solano RodrÃguez (2007), OrtÃz Alvarez (2014), Martà Sanchez (2014), Kovecses (2010), Xatara (1998), Tagnin (2013) E Monteiro-Plantin (2012), we have analyzed the paths used by the manuals to develop the Phraseological Consciousness and, consequently, the Phraseological Competence of the students. Initially, we identify the occurrences of phraseological units in each series, in what way this UF is presented in the book, if there is reference or resumption of use of that UF, in what context it appears, what activities are proposed, what skills are related to its use, Which types have the greatest and least recurrence in manuals and what is the functionality in oral and / or written production activities. This description and, a posteriori, analysis relate to the processes of identification, acquisition and reproduction of the meanings and formal structures of phraseological units. For this process to be satisfactory, we emphasize the comprehension of the written and spoken registers regarding the categorization, systematization and analysis of the vast lexical and semantic field that involves the phraseological units. In this paper we also intend to elaborate and recommend proposals for the application of activities with the UFs in interactive contexts of language use, not related to the school environment, but to cross the boundaries of the school environment. In the final part, we presented 4 teaching proposals so that said work with the phraseological units was developed in the schools, and for the teacher to have access to another pedagogical tool.

Abstract:
Материал исследования составили 93 фразеологизма (их них 50 английских и 43 русских) из таких источников, как книга «350 Idioms with Their Origin, or The Idiomatic Cake You Can Eat and Have It Too» Л. Ф.
The work is dedicated to identifying the similarities and differences in the expression of basic emotions (joy, fear, embarrassment/discomfort) in the English and Russian linguocultures. The research material consisted of 93 phraseological units (of which 50 are English and 43 are Russian) from sources such as the book “350 Idioms with Their Origin, or The Idiomatic Cake You Can Eat and Have It Too” by L. F. Shitova, a short Russian-English phraseological dictionary by V. V. Gurevich, as well as such websites as “Idioms in five languages”, “The world of phraseological units”, “My proverbs”, “The Idioms”, “Idioms online”, “Eslcafe” and “Native English”. The first chapter deals with theoretical issues and concepts such as emotion, basic emotion, emotion linguistics, concept, semantic primitives, and considers various classifications of basic emotions. In the second chapter, a comparative analysis of basic emotions is carried out on the material of somatic phraseological units of two linguistic cultures. For the analysis of phraseological units, a number of classifications were used, including V.V. Vinogradov's categorization which divides phraseological units into three categories: phraseological adhesions, phraseological unity and phraseological combinations; categorization from the point of view of types of interlanguage equivalence by V.S. Vinogradov. To analyze basic emotions, the meanings of emotives were considered using the frame approach of A. Wierzbicka, as well as the interpretation of words according to the Big Dictionary of D. N. Ushakov and Cambridge English Corpus. For each of the parameters, comparative quantitative observations are presented in the form of diagrams and tables. The research results can be used in lexicographic practice, for example, to expand the explanatory dictionary of emotive vocabulary due to the revealed national specifics of the linguistic image of the emotions of the Russian and the English speakers. The appendix contains a list of the Russian and English somatic phraseological units used in the work.

The main aim of this work is investigate Portuguese phonological units in contact with the Guajajára (Tupi-Guarani), native language of the Cachoeira village indigenous community, with the purpose of contributing to the description of the phraseological units that are spoken in Portuguese by non-native speakers Native speakers of that language. In addition to this general objective, in our research we present other more specific ones: a) To initiate the constitution of a database of Portuguese spoken as a second language; B) Identify phraseological units in Portuguese in the guajajára language; C) To carry out a survey, in phraseological dictionaries and in works on Portuguese speaking words, with the purpose of verifying the dictionalization of the phraseological units collected in the indigenous speech; D) To contribute to the cultural preservation and documentation of the use of Portuguese phraseological units, in the speaking of the guajajáras. To do so, we perform three stages of field research. The research site was the city of Barra do Corda (MA), in the Cana Brava indigenous land, with Indians living in the village Cachoeira. Data were collected locally, through the collection of personal oral narratives, obtained from a sample of 10 informants. The work is justified by the lack of scientific research on Portuguese phraseological units in contact with the indigenous language and the importance of investigating the phraseologies present in the lexicon of Portuguese as a second language. We call ourselves a theoretical-methodological support in Labov (2008); Tarallo (2001) and Calvet (2002); Biderman (2001); Vilela (1979); Rodrigues (1986); Montoro del Arco (2006), Corpas Pastor (1996) and Salah Mejri (2012). With the realization of the research, we believe that we have achieved the objectives we have proposed and will contribute to the description of Portuguese spoken in indigenous areas.
Master of Art thesis deals with Phraseological units in Lithuanian prose authors’ texts and dictionaries. There have been analysed 35 prose, essayist, and critics texts written by 14 Lithuanian authors. In the texts, 1074 phraseological units have been found (3005 cases of their usage). This paper aims at identifying the types of phraseological units used in the texts by Lithuanian authors, discussing the most typical systematic features (polysemy, synonymy, antonymy, diversity of variants, frequency, and lexis). In order to achieve this aim, the phraseological units used by the authors have been compared with the data found in specialised phraseology dictionaries. In this paper, the semantic classification of phraseological units and their functions are described, the types and models of syntactic structures of phraseological units are analysed, and their origin is discussed. The conclusion shows that phraseological units are the part of language expression used by modern prose writers. However, this part does not compose a specific subsystem.

This work aims at analyzing the phraseology of the judicial discourse. The corpus has been built upon decisions pronounced by judges of the Federal Court in the State of Cearà in lawsuits filed in 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2005. Communicative Theory of Terminology has been chosen as the framework for this research, thus meaning that lexical, syntactic and discursive criteria were taken into account in the process of identifying and categorizing the phraseological units. For data analysis, two instruments have been employed: the software WordSmith Tools v. 4.0 and phraseological unit files, which were used for classifying the phrases according to their function in the texts. The results suggest that phraseology in judicial discourse is manifested by means of collocations, clauses and discursive formulas.

Abstract:
Background: Guidelines and audit have been widely adopted as quality improvement strategies in healthcare. A recent stroke guideline states that 45 minutes of each relevant therapy, 5 days per week, should be provided to patients deemed appropriate. National audit data suggest variation across teams in the proportion of patients deemed appropriate, and the quantity and frequency of therapy provided. Reasons for these variations are unknown. Aim: To investigate the ways in which policy, professional judgement and patient need influence the delivery of therapies in stroke units (SUs) in the era of the 45 minute guideline. Method: An ethnographic study, including participant observation and interviews, was conducted in three SUs. Results: Drawing on theoretical concepts of audit society and street level bureaucracy, the study found that the 45 minute guideline was limited in its ability to influence delivery of therapies. The attempt to standardise therapy time was undermined by variation in the roles and remits of SUs and therapists, and varied understandings of ‘what counts’ as therapy. Thus they had different approaches to assessing therapy needs, and adopted different audit reporting practices. In line with the claims of street level bureaucracy, therapists developed routines of practice to simplify and manage their caseloads. In one example, the audit had become a way of categorising patients’ need for therapy and justifying resource allocation. The thesis identifies the role of ‘Street Level Leaders’ in guiding therapists’ attitudes and practices. The thesis provides empirical data to support the theoretical concept of audit society, showing how changes to therapy standards and practice took place in a wider economic and social context. Conclusions: The 45 minute guideline was one of many factors influencing delivery of therapy and was diversely interpreted and implemented. The study’s findings suggest that, in the context of the quasi-marketisation of healthcare, audit may become a tool of commissioner-centred, rather than patient-centred care. Ongoing engagement between strategic leaders, patients and clinicians is needed, to ensure that quality of care does not become secondary to ‘playing the numbers game’.

Abstract:
Verbal phraseological units are components of the natural language structure, studied by phraseology, which express a concept or an idea. These linguistic structures are multi-word lexical units, made up of one verb and one or more variables, having a meaning which cannot be predicted from the sum of the expression component meanings. In this PhD thesis we proposed a computational methodology for the semi-automatic identification of verbal phraseological units written in Mexican Spanish that aims to contribute in both, the linguistic and computational fields. We introduce unsupervised and supervised computational methods in order to identify and validate “candidate verbal phraseological units” in corpora of different genre. The contributions of this research work are mainly four: a) corpora manually annotated for verbal phraseological units and contexts associated, b) a lexicon in which it is estimated the probability of occurrence of such linguistic structures in a corpus of news genre, c) a number of hypotheses for the automatic validation and/or identification of verbal phraseological units in raw texts, and d) analysis of their polarity. The obtained results, including the hypotheses proposed in the PhD document, will have a future impact in different tasks such as machine translation, dictionaries construction, foreign language learning, among others

Abstract:
Alstom wanted to investigate the possibility of adapting its light emitting diode (LED) technology for shunting signals in train traffic. The LED technology uses 50V, but Alstom wants to adapt it for 12V. The LED technology is energy efficient but needs to be adapted for existing signal interlocking by drawing a higher current. This meant that the possibility of reactive power compensation was investigated to obtain lower thermal dissipation in dwarf signal. The essay presents a couple of possible solutions. One of the solutions is to raise the voltage by using a booster converter to use the existing 50V LED unit. Capacitors were reviewed to be used in reactive power compensation to increase current supply. One of the solutions then became a capacitor bank. Simulations indicated that a booster converter and a capacitor bank can be used to adapt the circuit. However, some modifications must be made.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the practices, perceptions, and operations of agricultural crime units. To date, there has been little research conducted on policing agricultural crimes and no known research on units specializing in investigating them. The study utilizes data gathered from qualitative interviews with agricultural crime investigators across several states to fill this gap in the literature. The results allow for an examination of the fundamental practices of agricultural units, their perceptions and their experiences. In addition, they point to several implications for both policy and practice that may serve to guide our efforts to combat the problem.

Abstract:
Context: The facial subunit principle organizes the facial skin into subunits. Facial reconstruction for skin cancer based on aesthetic units consists of replacing the entire subunit when a large part of a subunit has been removed. Aims: To determine the prevalence of facial skin cancer, their location by facial aesthetic units, and the type of facial reconstruction used in each of them. Settings and Design: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted at the Head and Neck Surgery Service of a general hospital between 2017 and 2018. Materials and Methods: A population census was conducted during this period. Statistical Analysis Used: The categorical variables were expressed as frequencies (percentages). Continuous variables were described as the means and standard deviations or medians and interquartile ranges. Results: The most common skin cancer was basal cell skin cancer, followed by epithelial skin cancer and, at last, melanoma. In general, the most frequent localization of these cancers was the nose. Conclusions: In spite of primary closure being the most common form of reconstruction, a considerable number of patients required facial reconstruction based on aesthetic facial units, with satisfying results.

Laso, Martín Natàlia Judith. "A corpus-based study of the phraseological behaviour of abstract nouns in medical English. A Needs Analysis of a Spanish medical community." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/1671.

Full text
Abstract:
It has been long acknowledged (Carter 1998, Williams 1998; Biber 2006; Hyland 2008) that writing a text not only entails the accurate selection of correct terms and grammatical constructions but also a good command of appropriate lexical combinations and phraseological expressions. This assumption becomes especially apparent in scientific discourse, where a precise expression of ideas and description of results is expected. Several scholars (Gledhill 2000; Flowerdew 2003; Hyland 2008) have pointed to the importance of mastering the prototypical formulaic patterns of scientific discourse so as to produce phraseologically competent scientific texts.

Research on specific-domain phraseology has demonstrated that acquiring the appropriate phraseological knowledge (i.e. mastering the prototypical lexicogrammatical patterns in which multiword units occur) is particularly difficult for non-native speakers, who must gain control of the conventions of native-like discourse (Howarth 1996/1998; Wray 1999; Oakey 2002; Williams 2005; Granger & Meunier 2008).

The present dissertation aims to analyse native and non-native speakers' usage of five abstract nouns, i.e. agreement, comparison, conclusion, contribution and decision, in medical English. In order to explore non-native speakers' lexical and phraseological command of the five selected nouns, a Worksheet of four exercises was distributed among a community of twenty-four Spanish doctors, who were practising medicine in three different Spanish hospitals; namely, Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de Albacete, Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro and Hospital de Navarra.

With the aim of assessing non-native speakers' phraseological competence regarding the use of abstract nouns, their written production will be compared against a native corpus. Thus, it can be claimed that this investigation also attempts to contribute to the linguistic characterisation of the discourse of medical science. More precisely, this thesis project intends to explore native speakers' prototypical lexico-grammatical patterns around the five abstract nouns under investigation. This analysis is based entirely on corpus evidence, since all collocational patterns discussed have been extracted from the Health Science Corpus (HSC), compiled by the Grup de Recerca en Lexicologia i Lingüística de Corpus (GReLiC), University of Barcelona. The HSC consists of a 4 million word collection of health science (i.e. medicine, biomedicine, biology and biochemistry) texts, specifically compiled for the current research study.

The exploration of the collocational behaviour of abstract nouns in medical English will serve as a benchmark against which to measure non-native speakers' production.

Zhang, Lei. "A study of functional units for information use of scholarly journal articles." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/34015.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims to enhance reading effectiveness and efficiency by presenting the readers with the text in the article that is most relevant to a particular information task, rather than presenting the article in its entirety. It applies the idea of the functional unit, the smallest information unit with a distinct function within four major components of scholarly journal articles — Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion. First, through a review and analysis of the literature and validation through user surveys, 41 functional units within the four components were identified. Also identified were the relationships between the individual functional units and five information use tasks, and furthermore the relationships among a set of functional units for a particular task. The functional units were classified into three categories (primary, related, additional related) according to how useful they were for each task. Based on this taxonomy, a prototype journal reading system was designed and implemented. Thirty 3rd and 4th year psychology students participated in an experimental study using the prototype system. Content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data collected from retrospective interviews, questionnaire open-ended questions, and screen recordings. A statistical analysis of quantitative data collected via rating scales, logging of time and highlights was also carried out. The answers to comprehension questions were assessed first by content analysis and then by statistical analysis. Participants using the prototype system were significantly more satisfied with the information obtained, highlighted more relevant text, and answered more fully the comprehension questions. The use of functional units was effective in enabling people to focus on specific information and use pieces of relevant information across the article, but not necessarily to move from more relevant to less relevant information. Participants using the prototype system also felt significantly more efficient in obtaining the information. The use of functional units was efficient in enabling people to read less or read selectively. The signaling of functional units seemed to be more effective and efficient for the tasks requiring use of information scattered across articles. This research suggests that information within an article can be organized and presented to benefit readers’ information use.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to analyze price variations across the city of Tucson to determine whether any systematic patterns of noncompetitive pricing existed and to explore their causes. Prices were examined for three alternative baskets which consisted of (1) national brand items; (2) house brand items; and (3) the cheapest brand items. Also, several characteristics pertaining to firm size, competition level, and neighborhood demographics were examined to determine their effects on the price of the national brand basket. And finally, average weekly prices were examined to determine the effect of the week on the prices of the three alternative baskets. Ordinary least squares regression equations showed that only those variables related to the competition level were significant in influencing the price of the basket. In addition it was found that price differences were brand specific. That is, BRAND1 prices were found to be higher on the south side of town, whereas BRAND3 prices were highest on the north side of town. Similar results were found when looking at the number of close rivals, stores within the same chain, and the week of the month.

Abstract:
The influence of English is evident on languages worldwide. English is considered a global language of communication and is used by a large number of speakers worldwide for their interactions. It is clear that English dominates many aspects of daily life, such as technology, science, the media and the Internet. All the influences observed on the languages of the world that are due to the influence of English fall under the notion of Anglicisation, that covers all levels of linguistic analysis. In my dissertation I study the influence of English on Modern Greek (MG), which has been particularly strong during the last two to three decades. I aim to examine the phenomenon of Anglicisation in MG taking into account the English influence at all levels of linguistic analysis, focusing particularly on the lexical, phraseological and morphosyntactic level. In particular, I examine newly imported English loanwords, such as blóger < English blogger, phraseological patterns found in MG that are word-by-word translations of the equivalent English ones, such as trofí γia sképsi < English food for thought, as well as morphosyntactic structures that calque the equivalent structures of English, such as a new form of pre-modified NPs where the pre-modifier is an uninflected English loanword, as for example, pdf arxío < English pdf file, instead of arxío pdf ‘file pdf’. In order to analyze my data, I use dictionaries and grammars for MG, as well as MG text corpora, the Hellenic National Corpus, and the Corpus of Greek Texts, the text corpora available through the Sketch Engine platform, but also the customized text corpus that I built exclusively for my data through Sketch Engine. Regarding the newly imported English loanwords, I study the existence of the non-transliterated forms of these loanwords in MG and compare the frequency of appearance of the transliterated and non-transliterated forms (e.g. the non- transliterated form blogger instead of the transliterated <μπλόγκερ> [blóger]). Moreover, I investigate the factors responsible for the appearance and use of non-transliterated forms of the loanwords by examining their appearance in specialized vocabularies of MG, such as the vocabulary of sports and technology. Regarding the phraseological patterns and morphosyntactic structures that calque the equivalent English ones, I compare the frequency of appearance of the calqued structure in MG to the frequency of appearance of the equivalent MG structure. Furthermore, I try to determine the chronology of the insertion of English loanwords in MG, and finally, I draw some general conclusions, regarding Anglicisation in MG, based on the results of the research

Abstract:
The topic of the present graduation thesis is “Zoological code in ensuring intercultural / interlingual communication (on the example of phraseological units with zoonym in Chinese, Russian and English)”. The purpose of the investigation lies in revealing the national-cultural and universal components of the zoological code using the example of phraseological units with zoonym in Chinese, Russian and English, which contribute to ensuring an adequate translation process for intercultural communication in the three languages. The subject of the research is phraseological units with zoonym in Chinese, Russian and English. The research uses a comparative method to determine the national-cultural and universal figuratively connotative features of phraseological units with zoonym in the three above-mentioned languages. The results of the research may be used in the process of mutual translation between Chinese, English, and Russian languages; in lexicographic practice for compiling a trilingual dictionary of zoonyms; in the classes of linguoculturology and intercultural communication, as well as for the purpose of teaching Russian to foreign students.

Thon, Jonathan Noah. "Application of proteomics to the study of protein translation in stored platelet units." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2346.

Full text
Abstract:
Platelet products have a short shelf life (5 to 7 days) owing in part to the deterioration of the quality of platelets stored at 22°C. This creates significant inventory challenges, and blood banks may suffer shortages and high wastage as a result. Proteomics offers a global quantitative approach to investigate changes occurring in stored blood products. These data sets can identify processes leading to storage-associated losses of blood component quality such as the platelet storage lesion (PSL). Changes to the platelet proteome between days 1 and 7 of storage were analysed with 3 complementary proteomic approaches with final mass spectrometric (MS) analysis: 2-dimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis/differential gel electrophoresis (DIGE), isobaric tagging for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ), and isotope-coded affinity tagging (ICAT). Although proteomics analyses identified many storage-associated protein changes, these varied significantly by method suggesting that a combination of protein-centric (2D gel or DIGE) and peptide-centric (iTRAQ or ICAT) approaches is necessary to acquire the most informative data. Validation of the proteomics results by western blotting, flow cytometry, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT PCR) and ³ٰ⁵S-methionine incorporation confirmed that platelets are capable of synthesising biologically relevant proteins ex vivo throughout a 10-day storage period with particularly long-lived mRNA (half-life of approximately 2.4 days), and has provided the first evidence for one of the mechanisms of the PSL. The development of an ³ٰ⁵Smethionine assay has since shown that stored human blood platelets incorporate ³ٰ⁵S-methionine at a rate that is proportional to time and substrate concentration, and is slower for freshly drawn platelets than those stored in pooled buffy coat derived units for 10 days. More interesting still are the observations that the overall ³ٰ⁵S-methionine incorporation rate was higher in pooled buffy coat platelet units versus freshly drawn platelets, that this rate increased upon agonist exposure in both, and that day 8 platelets showed significantly greater total protein translation than on days 2,3,7 and 10 of storage. This may be indicative of translational regulation of the platelet proteome during storage and upon activation. Translational control is a consequence of remarkable cellular specialisation and precise biochemical pathways which, in the case of platelets, may lead to storage-associated losses of blood component quality and must be understood if platelet storage times are to be extended.

Grant, Lyle George. "The impact of smoke-free policies on inpatient psychiatric units : an ethnographic study." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44018.

Full text
Abstract:
Smoke-free grounds policies (SFGPs) were introduced in acute psychiatric hospital settings to help improve health among patients, staff, and visitors. However, enacting these policies has been challenging. Recognizing that cultural norms around tobacco use may influence policy enactment, a qualitative ethnographic study was undertaken in Northern British Columbia, Canada to improve understandings about how SFGPs are affected by institutional cultures. Data included participant observation, document analysis, informal fieldwork discussions (n=11), and interviews with patients (n=20), healthcare professionals (n=19), and key informants (n=2) at two hospitals. Data were analyzed using iterative processes to inductively derive thematic findings and develop cultural understandings. Cultural factors supported some healthcare professionals in subverting and resisting the SFGP while advocating and caring for patients. Strong consultative leadership, including input and participation by those most directly responsible for policy implementation, offered the strongest indication that policy-maker intent could be implemented. This study highlights the actions taken and challenges faced by those implementing SFGPs in inpatient psychiatric settings. Consistency in implementing the SFGP across the organization was a significant challenge, influenced by local context, the nature of the policy, resource availability, and healthcare professional discretion under the policy. Patients responded to the SFGP in a variety of ways, but ultimately remained resigned to smoking and believed hospitals had a duty to accommodate them and their smoking. The centrality of smoking was rooted in personal beliefs sustained by both healthcare professionals and patients, and enforced through group norms. The study offers new evidence about the importance of local and cultural contexts to SFGP implementation and reports for the first time how rurality may influence SFGP implementation in psychiatric settings in Canada. Local contexts and cultural factors can be conceptualized in a socio-ecological model of intra-personal, inter-personal, institutional factors, and community/environment spheres of influence, to structure inquiry and analysis of SFGP implementation. It is suggested that policy-makers avoid oversimplified macro-level approaches to SFGP development and implementation in favour of more localized, simultaneous, top-down, bottom-up approaches, with accompanying support for those most directly involved in implementation efforts to improve policy fidelity and any needed shift of cultural norms.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Producing on a global scale is attractive for multinational corporations (MNCs) due to production cost savings and the proximity as well as simplified access to new high growth markets. In order to be successful in foreign markets it is vital for MNCs to understand the local market conditions. In particular stakeholders, also referred to institutions, and their diverse demands are likely to vary among differently industrialized country markets. Additionally, sustainability has emerged as an inevitable topic for businesses and countries alike. Purpose: Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyze different institutions and their demands in differently industrialized countries. Moreover, the aim is to describe and analyze capabilities that manufacturing companies can use to respond to these institutional demands in order to achieve a more sustainable production. Methodology: The research method employed is a single embedded case study consisting of one Scandinavian multinational machinery and construction equipment manufacturer with three production units located in Sweden, Bulgaria and China. Semi-structured interviews with managers, a supplementary questionnaire and a literature review on institutional and capability theory serve as sources for primary and secondary data collection. Findings: There are differences between institutional demands among differently industrialized countries. The research found that manufacturing units in developed and ECMs can respond to these institutional demands through different capabilities. Next to institutional demands there are certain institutional influences that are beyond the control of the MNC and can only be absorbed. By having a diverse set of economic-, natural- and social capabilities which are difficult to copy and that are corresponding to various institutional efficiency and legitimacy demands as well as influences manufacturing companies can create a more sustainable business. Research and practical implications: Future qualitative research could seek to explore whether the results of this study are congruent for companies operating in other industries and other countries. Next, future research could seek to explore whether there are more evident natural and social based capabilities existing in the field.Within praxis, it is critical for managers to be aware that each country has its distinctive context and that it is necessary to locally adapt in order to satisfy the prevailing market conditions. Besides it is essential not only to satisfy the customer demands but also to identify and respond to other institutional demands to create a more sustainable production. Keywords: Capabilities, institutions, efficiency and legitimacy demands as well as influences, differently industrialized country markets, sustainability, economic-, social- and natural value, imitability, manufacturing, MNC, global sustainable production

Benedetti, Paolo. "A multicentre study on antibiotic resistance in North-East Italian intensive care units." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.568962.

Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND. Intensive care units (ICUs) are "hot" areas for antibiotic consumption, infection and antibiotic resistance. Resistance affects patient outcomes, resource utilization and determines whether treatments are adequate. Within Europe, Italy has among the highest rates of antibiotic consumption but resistances - particularly in ICUs - are largely unexplored, both nationally and regionally. OBJECTIVES. To assess variation in antibiotic prescribing, consumption, resistance, and treatment outcomes and to identify critical points for improvement in antimicrobial practice across 5 ICUs in the Veneto region, North-east Italy. RESULTS. From 2002 to 2010, 911 patients were reviewed. Median K'U stay (17 days; IQR, 8-29) and ICU mortality (mean, 24.9%) were similar across sites. Empirical antibiotics were given to 853 patients (83.1%), with penicillin/β-lactamase inhibitor combinations (26%), cephalosporins (20.7%), fluoroquinolones (10.9%), and carbapenems (9.8%) frequently used. Laboratory investigation was often long delayed (median 7 days IQR = 3-14) after treatment initiation, and there were few (37.2%) microbiological-based shifts; 30.9% of empirical regimens were inadequate. Treatment inadequacy (AOR=13.99) and septic shock (AOR=3.29) were the main independent predictors for hospital mortality. Amongst 1908 isolates tested - predominantly, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (22%) and MRSA (14.8%) - 53.7% were multiresistant, with significant inter-hospital differences in resistance rates of Enterobacteriaceae to fluoroquinolones, and for P. aeruginosa to fluoroquinolones and carbapenems) (p < 0.001). The relationship between resistance and use of fluoroquinolones and 3rd_ generation cephalosporins was clear for Enterobacteriaceae (p < 0.001), but weaker for P. aeruginosa. The susceptibility of Escherichia coli to fluoroquinolones decreased over time (X2 = 0.009). Antibiotic use was inflated, especially at one ICU with excess of fluoroquinolone (94.4 DDD/100 bed-days vs. 26.1-35.9 elsewhere) use. CONCLUSIONS. Considerable inter-hospital variation III prescribing affected antibiotic consumption and resistance prevalence. Poor and delayed use of laboratory microbiology was prominent, as was the uncontrolled use of antibiotics. Urgent interventions are needed and improvement strategies are discussed.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.
Why is it that some military organizations succeed and others do not? What characteristics elude unsuccessful fighting groups that successful ones are able to capture and translate into positive outcomes? The study of organizational theory and design spans the multiple typologies of organizational functions and forms. However, at the foundation of all groups are the individuals and the interaction of those individuals within the organization. Given this, the concept of unit cohesion can provide some insight in the search for discovering what makes organizations successful. Why study unit cohesion within Naval Special Warfare (NSW) operational units? The simple answer is because cohesion can increase performance and effectiveness. Prior to the last century, the concept of unit cohesion was based on the anecdotal observations of military commanders and historians. The rise of the fields of psychology and sociology led to an increase in the study and understanding of unit cohesion. This study utilizes survey research to investigate specific factors related to unit cohesion in NSW operational units and how they are related to current issues in the community. Ultimately, the impacts of these relationships provide a basis for recommendations intended to improve cohesion in, and overall effectiveness of NSW operational units.

This study is an analysis of the Chinese translations of the terminology and frequently-used nouns in general and specifically in the translations of The Standard for Program Management, 3rd Edition (SPM) published by the Taiwan Chapter of the Project Management Institute in 2015. The translation strategies were discussed and classified, based on the translations of light industry terminology as well as those of the SPM project. The project management approach and the Agile development process were used in the analysis of the Chinese translations of SPM by a team of 30 experts who took one and half months to translate these terms, aiming at illustrating the similarities and differences that practitioners may encounter in project management industry. The study also includes a comparison of the SPM terminology with three other foundational standards, The Standard for Portfolio Management, 3rd Edition, The Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3®), 3rd Edition and The Software Extension to the PMBOK® Guide, 5th Edition. For this specific project, suggestions for the glossary refinement are also provided for the next edition (which is scheduled to be released in 2016) to the PMI core standard: A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), 5th Edition, and for PMI Taipei Taiwan Chapter to publish the errata to the corpus of the terminology and frequently used nouns. In the analysis and comparison, various translations of these terms were referred to and thoroughly discussed with the purpose of finding possible Chinese equivalents of these terms and nouns. This study is corpus-based, with a main goal to conduct phraseological and dialectological studies. Corpora consisting of translations of light industry, SPM and PMBOK terms are used to find out some phraseological rules that govern the principles on which translators based to create grammatical and acceptable renditions. Different sets of translations done by translators from both sides of the Taiwan Strait are used in the contrastive study of different language uses between in China and in Taiwan in terms of dialect differences, different preferences and deterministic factors in language relativity.

"Функціонально-семантичний аналіз польських фразеологізмів з компонентами - назвами грошових одиниць(Functional-semаntic analysis of Polish phraseological units with the names of monetary elements)." 2004. https://eprints.oa.edu.ua/633/1/avtoreferat.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
(The candidate’s thesis is devoted to the investigation of functional and semantic peculiarities of Polish phraseological units with the names of monetary elements. The analysis shows, that NPU are numerous, they compose a certain layer in the idiomatic value of the Polish language and are grouped around the seven main theme groups: “Characteristic features of a person and peculiarities of his / her character”, “Meaning of money in a person’s life”, “Evaluation of a person / thing”, “Practical activity and commodity-money relations”, “Ways of earning money”, “Financial and social-economical state of a person”, “Relations among people”. The distinguishing feature of the main part of meanings manifested by the numismatic phraseological units is their correlation with a person, person’s features of character and qualitative estimation of person’s practical activity, which prove the anthropomorphic choice of phraseological semantic. Functional-semаntic analysis of NPU shows, that the elements of monetary units do not lose their connection with their etymological, lexical-semаntic meaning, but when added to the new, phraseological meaning, form and motivate it. In the candidate’s thesis for the first time in the Ukrainian linguistics the main theoretical ways in the investigation of Polish phraseology are summarized, as well as Polish lexicographical sources and paremiological works are characterized. )

EN : The presented paper is dedicated to English phraseological units in media discourse and ways of their translation into Ukrainian. Phraseological units are part and parcel of any natural language. They are widely used in different types of discourse that’s why they always attract linguists’ attention. The topicality of the degree paper is conditioned by the growing interest of linguistics and translation studies to media communication and its units, lack of analysis of English media phraseology, existing necessity of determining its ways of translation into the Ukrainian language. As the object of the work is English phraseological units in Advertising, types of phraseological units used in English media discourse and ways of their translation into the Ukrainian language are viewed to be its subject. The main aim of the degree paper, predetermined by its topicality, subject and objects lies in defining types of English media phraseological units and ways of their translation into the Ukrainian language. It determined the accomplishment of such objectives as:  highlighting basic notions of phraseology and its theoretical studies;  providing the theory of English media discourse analysis;  considering different classifications of phraseological units;  classifying English phraseological units according to their semantic unity, structure, semantic characteristics, belonging to a certain part of speech, and etymological origin;  revealing difficulties of translation of English media phraseology;  analyzing ways of translation of English media phraseology into the Ukrainian language. To solve the abovementioned tasks we used methods of contextual, comparative, semantic, component, functional, translation, quantitative analysis. 81 The degree paper has its practical value because its results can be applied in the courses of English lexicology and stylistics, translation and cultural studies as well as special courses of discourse analysis and media linguistics; in writing degree papers and compiling phraseological dictionaries. The structure of the degree paper is as follows. In introduction its topicality, purpose, tasks, object and subject, material and research methods are defined. Basic theoretical notions of phraseology and English media discourse analysis are revealed in the first chapter. Types of English media phraseological units are described in the second chapter. Ways of their translating into the Ukrainian language are analyzed in the third chapter. Basic theoretical and practical results of the degree paper are given in its general conclusions. Different translation transformations as well as contextual translation of English media phraseological units and sentences with them are used to adopt the translated units to norms and rules of the Ukrainian language. The further work will be devoted to the analysis of translation of English and Ukrainian media phraseology. The scientific novelty of the presented research lies in comprehensive analysis of the peculiarities of English-language advertising discourse (particularly in advertising slogans); in studying the existing types of advertising slogans in modern English and in characterization of the main ways of translating phraseological units in English advertising discourse.

EN : The presented paper is devoted to the study of Modern English Military Vocabulary and Translation Issues. The specificity and typology of military lexical and phraseological units, their features of translation are considered. The object of the research is English military vocabulary. The aim of the research was to establish the features of lexical and phraseological units of military topics from modern English and their translation. To achieve this goal, it was necessary to solve a number of the following tasks: • to define the special vocabulary of the military sphere; • analyze the vocabulary and phraseological units of military subjects; • to reveal the semantic features of lexical units; • systematize phraseological units. As results of the analysis of English military vocabulary are the following conclusions: The Fund of military phraseological units is a large layer of ideomatisms, ideophraseomatisms and phraseomatisms. Phraseology of the military field is a large group of phraseological units, most of which, in terms of their structural and semantic features, refer to substantive and verbal phraseological units, which are the most productive stable expressions in any language; to a lesser extent, modal and exclamatory phraseological units are represented in the military sphere, which is explained by the general nature of their applicability. The theoretical value of the paper is determined by the possibility to use the obtained results for further research into translation military vocabulary and phraseological units. The paper has practical value as well. The findings of the research can be used for the development of special courses in translation.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has already launched ISO 26262 for automotive electronic/electrical systems which is a standard for functional safety. To help domestic manufacturers integrate smoothly their electric vehicles and components with global market, Part 5 of ISO 26262 namely ‘Product Development: Hardware Level’ is studied in detail in this thesis. 50-kW motor control unit (MCU) made in a domestic research institute is taken as an example to demonstrate how ISO 26262 can be implemented. Special attention is paid to DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) and failure rate estimation of the MCU and its components to examine whether they meet requirements of ISO 26262. To obtain meaningful failure rates, MIL-HDBK-217F N2 and FIDES 2009 are referred to, in which Fides is a DGA (French armament industry supervision agency) study conducted by a European consortium formed by eight industrialists including AIRBUS France, Eurocopter, Nexter Electronics, etc. from the fields of aeronautics and defense. The mean time between failure (MTBF) of each component and system is predicted as well. Comparison is made between results obtained from the two methods. With regard to DFMEA, an improved version of DFMEA resulting table is provided over the original one provided by the institute who made the MCU. The occurrence rate or occurrence frequency for each component is estimated and tabulated in the table. Risk indicators and their relative rakings for all components are found. Both of them are considered important issues in ISO 26262. The results showed that the MTBF of MCU, MIL-HDBK-217F N2 evaluates 11~57 years, FIDES calculations about 21 years; and according to DFMEA, the higher order RPN of component of MCU are Al capacitors, DSP and IGBT etc.

Thesis presents a strategy to improve the parallel calculation of the Border Block Diagonal matrix , In the parallel algorithms the Border Block Diagonal matrix is suitable for parallel calculation , and the cutset sub-block is the key point to effectively solve the BBD matrix . In this thesis , the Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) are used to measure the state variables of the cutsets , and send the state variables to the control center. The multiprocessor composed of all transputers which connected by networks is used to simulate the IEEE-57 bus , IEEE-118 bus and TPC-288 bus systems , it is results show that the proposed method can improve the parallel calculation of the BBD matrix.

In this thesis, we study on optimum units of diffractive/refractive hybrid lens and ,based on the results, design a 10X zoom lens which can be used in camera system. The diffractive lens is characteristic of thinness, lightness and cost effective. The diffractive lens has the same imaging function as refractive lens. The hybrid lens which consists of diffractive element and refractive element can eliminate more aberrations, and will not increase the volume and weight. We simulate and analysis the singlet and doublet of hybrid lenses. From the simulated results, we find optimum units of the hybrid lenses. Finally, based on the optimum units, we design a 10X zoom lens.
