People have always been fascinated by the extent to which belief or will may influence<p>behavior. Proverbs, like “we tend to get what we expect,” and concepts, such as optimistic<p>thinking or self-fulfilling prophecy, reflect this intuition of an important link between one’s<p>dispositions and subsequent behavior. In other words, one’s predictions directly or<p>indirectly cause them to become true. In a similar manner, every culture, country or<p>religion has their own words for ‘expectation,’ ‘belief,’ ‘disappointment,’ ‘surprise,’ and<p>generally all have the same meaning: under uncertainty, what one expects or believes is the<p>most likely to happen. This relation between what caused a reaction in the past will<p>probably cause it again in the future might not be realistic. If the expected outcome is not<p>confirmed, it may result in a personal ‘disappointment’, and if the outcome fits no<p>expectations, it will be a ‘surprise’. Our brain is hardwired with this heuristic capacity of<p>learning the cause-effect relationship and to project its probability as the basis for much of<p>our behavior, as well as cognitions. This experience-based expectation is a form of<p>learning that helps the brain to bypass an exhaustive search in finding a satisfactory<p>solution. Expectations may thus be considered an innate theory of causality; that is, a set of<p>factors (causes) generating a given phenomenon (effects) influence the way we treat<p>incoming information but also the way we retrieve the stored information. These<p>expectancy templates may well represent one of the basic rules of how the brain processes<p>information, affecting the way we perceive the world, direct our attention and deal with<p>conflicting information. In fact, expectations have been shown to influence our judgments<p>and social interactions, along with our volition to individually decide and commit to a<p>particular course of action. However, people’s expectations may elicit the anticipation of<p>their own automatic reactions to various situations and behaviors cues, and can explain that<p>expecting to feel an increase in alertness after coffee consumption leads to experiencing<p>the consequent physiologic and behavioral states. We call this behavior-response<p>expectancy. This non-volitional form of expectation has been shown to influence<p>cognitions such as memory, pain, visual awareness, implicit learning and attention, through<p>the mediation of phenomena like placebo effects and hypnotic behaviors. Importantly,when talking about expectations, placebo and hypnosis, it is important to note that we are<p>also talking about suggestion and its modulating capability. In other words, suggestion has<p>the power to create response expectancies that activate automatic responses, which will, in<p>turn, influence cognition and behavior so as to shape them congruently with the expected<p>outcome. Accordingly, hypnotic inductions are a systematic manipulation of expectancy,<p>similar to placebo, and therefore they both work in a similar way. Considering such<p>assumptions, the major question we address in this PhD thesis is to know if these<p>expectancy-based mechanisms are capable of modulating more high-level information<p>processing such as cognitive conflict resolution, as is present in the well-known Stroop<p>task. In fact, in a recent series of studies, reduction or elimination of Stroop congruency<p>effects was obtained through suggestion and hypnotic induction. Behavioural scientists typically classify cognitive processes as either controlled or automatic. Whereas controlled processes are slow and effortful, automatic processes are fast and involuntary. Cognitive researchers have recently begun investigating how top-down influence in the form of suggestion can allow individuals to modulate the automaticity of deeply ingrained processes. The present thesis surveys a background of converging findings that collectively indicate that certain individuals can derail involuntary processes, such as reading. We extend previous Stroop findings to several other well-established automatic paradigms, including the McGurk effect. We thus demonstrate how, in the case of highly suggestible individuals, suggestion seems to wield control over a process that is likely even more automatic than the Stroop effect. Furthermore, we present findings from two novel experimental paradigms exploring the potential of shifting automaticity in the opposite direction – i.e., transforming, without practice, a controlled task into one that is automatic. In addition, we present findings from an experiment leveraging de-automatization to illuminate a longstanding debate on the nature of hypnotic suggestibility: whether it reflects a stable trait determined by cognitive aptitude or a flexible skill amenable to attitudinal factors such as beliefs and expectations. We surreptitiously controlled light and sound stimuli to convince participants that they were responding strongly to hypnotic suggestions for visual and auditory hallucinations. Extending our previous findings, we indexed hypnotic suggestibility by de-automatizing an involuntary audiovisual phenomenon—the McGurk effect. Our findings intimate that, at least in the present experimental context, expectation hardly correlates with—and is unlikely to be a primary determinant of—high hypnotic suggestibility. Finally, the thesis concludes by addressing related evidence from the neuroscience of contemplative practices and discussing how these findings pave the road to a more scientific understanding of voluntary control and automaticity.<br>Les scientifiques distinguent habituellement deux classes de processus cognitifs : les processus contrôlés et les processus automatiques. Tandis que les processus contrôlés sont lents et requièrent un effort, les processus automatiques sont rapides et involontaires. Les chercheurs en sciences cognitives ont récemment commencé à étudier comment l'influence des suggestions peut de moduler l'automaticité de processus profondément enracinés. La présente thèse examine un ensemble de découvertes qui indiquent collectivement que certaines personnes peuvent modifier des processus involontaires. Nous étendons les découvertes précédentes sur l'effet Stroop à plusieurs autres paradigmes automatiques bien établis, y compris l'effet McGurk. Nous démontrons ainsi comment, dans le cas des individus très suggestibles, la suggestion semble exercer un contrôle sur un processus qui est probablement encore plus automatique que l'effet Stroop. <p> Suggestion is a part of communication that cannot be stripped from or be considered separate from verbal and nonverbal communication. It is through the need to view the communication processes from a complete understanding that this study investigated the possible influence that suggestion may have on an individual’s perception of reality. The existing literature was reviewed with various results from different researchers, however, much of the literature supported previous research done by Spanos et al. (1984) and Bartels et al. (2006). Their research showed some indications that suggestion, and possibly priming may have an influence on an individual’s perception. Using their research as a starting point this study developed a mixed-method approach in order to test some aspects of their research. Ten volunteers participated in a mixed-methods experiment. A Factorial Design of 2 x 2 enabled a testing of two treatments at the same time. The participants were tested for level of suggestibility using the Stanford Scale and were then divided into one of four groups. Groups consisted of high or low suggestible participants who were treated with a suggestion or priming words to determine their level of discomfort when their arm was placed in ice water. The results were measured on a scale from one to ten. </p><p> The ANOVA showed no statistical difference in the groups. However, the number of individuals who were unable to complete the testing was all in the high suggestibility group and it appeared that individuals in the priming group, both high and low suggestible, had the greatest reduction in discomfort relative to their baseline.</p>

It was hypothesized that a suggestion system based on behavioral principles would lead to the submission of an increased number of suggestions and improve employees' expectations of suggestion contribution. Friday Night Live Program employees of San Joaquin Youth Services (n=2) were assigned to an experimental group and received a suggestion box (baseline phase) for 6 weeks followed by the behavioral suggestion system (treatment) for 6 weeks. Other employees at San Joaquin Youth Services formed a control group ($n=12$) and were in a continuous baseline phase. Both groups were given a pretest and a post-test survey concerning their expectations of suggestion contributions. During the 12 weeks of the study, the control group contributed no suggestions, while the experimental group contributed a mean of 4.4 suggestions per week during treatment and no suggestions during their baseline phase. Additionally, survey scores showed an improved attitude toward suggestions for the experimental group and declining attitudes toward suggestions for the control group. These results support the hypothesis.

Web, fotos, publicações, etc), criando uma estrutura conhecida como folksonomia,
que possibilita uma melhora na navegação, organização e recuperação de informação.
Atualmente, esses sistemas são muito populares na Web, portanto, melhorar sua qualidade
e automatizar o processo de atribuição de tags é uma tarefa importante. Neste trabalho
é proposto um sistema que automaticamente atribui tags a páginas, baseando-se em
múltiplas fontes de conhecimento como o conteúdo textual, estrutura de hiperlinks
e bases de conhecimento. A partir dessas fontes, vários atributos são extraídos para
construir um classificador que decide que termos devem ser sugeridos como tag.
Experimentos usando um dataset com tags e páginas extraídas do Delicious, um
importante sistema de tagging social, mostram que nossos métodos obtém bons resultados
de precisão e cobertura, quando comparado com tags sugeridas por usuários. Além disso,
uma comparação com trabalhos relacionados mostra que nosso sistema tem uma qualidade
de sugestão comparável a abordagens estado da arte na área. Finalmente, uma avaliação
com usuários foi feita para simular um ambiente real, o que também produziu bons
resultados

Mercier). Hypnosis is associated with profound changes in conscious thought, experience and behaviour and has a long clinical and experimental history. Data on the nature and role of hypnotic induction procedures is still somewhat lacking however, and probably the only thing one can say about them with any conviction is that they enhance suggestibility in some cases. Nevertheless, a review and re-analyses of previous work reveals that the effect of the induction of hypnosis on suggestibility may be substantial, comparable to psychological treatments in general. The work reported here makes a clear distinction between the hypothetical 'hypnotic state' and the phenomena produced by suggestion and aimed to investigate the necessity for the former in producing suggestibility changes and the mechanisms by which both exert their influence. As it had important implications for how non-hypnotic and hypnotic suggestibility were measured in the thesis, Study 1 (n=312) examined the relationship between lateral asymmetry and bodily response to suggestion. Study 2 (n=102) and Study 3 (n=105) explored the notion that absorption and reduced critical thought are instrumental in how inductions effect responses to test-suggestions and suggestions for pain modulation respectively. Study 4 (n=105) investigated the effect on suggestibility of a hypnotic induction and the extent to which the magnitude of this effect is altered by labelling the procedure 'hypnosis'. Study 5 (n=105) examined the influence of compliance to requests on suggestibility and addressed the role of strategy selection in response to suggestions. The findings are important for both clinical and experimental applications and indicate that important determinants of subsequent responses to suggestion are: (i) the definition of the situation as hypnotic which in turn enhances the expectation of benefits (ii) the focussing of attention and the reduction of critical thought and (iii) the facilitation of engaging in goal-directed behaviours through compliance to requests.

On the basis of a critical review of the literature in chapter one, it is concluded that no existing theory of hypnosis is able to provide a satisfactory account of the entire set of behavioural, cognitive, social and physiological evidence pertaining to the phenomenon. In an attempt to rectify this situation, an integrative conceptual framework amalgamating existing theories of hypnosis into a single model on the basis of contemporary cognitive psychological theory is presented in chapters two and three. According to the model, successfully executed suggestions result from the automatic activation of perceptual and behavioural representations following the receipt of triggers by low level attentional systems. By this view, the process involved in hypnotic and non-hypnotic suggestions are essentially the same; however, it is argued that contextual features and state changes associated with the hypnotic situation are responsible for the increased responsivity to suggestions typically displayed therein. In the following chapters, four studies designed to assess predictions from the model are described. In the first two, the related predictions that suggestibility is positively related to a low level processing predisposition and negatively related to a high level processing predisposition were assessed. Both studies provided support for the first hypothesis although no evidence for the second hypothesis was obtained. the third and fourth studies examined the related hypotheses that hypnosis is associated with (i) a low level processing bias; and (ii) a high level processing inhibition. Neither hypothesis received any significant empirical support. In the final chapter, the results of these studies are discussed with reference to the theoretical framework outlined in the introductory chapters. It is concluded that the model provides a fairly good account of suggestion, although certain revisions are required before an adequate account of hypnosis can be offered. Avenues for future research are explored.

This Master Thesis project consists in suggesting generic Product Category Rules (PCR) for newbuildings which will be in line with the requirements of the PCR for building product issued inFebruary 2006 by the Swedish Environmental Management Council. The suggestion for a PCRfor new buildings is meant to provide a structured framework to the real estate professionals fora reliable, comprehensive and verifiable communication of the environmental performance oftheir buildings. Typical examples of possible use of an environmental declaration of a newbuilding would be communication towards authorities, marketing purposes or planningpurposes. This will also allow the authorities to be able to include the environmentalconsiderations inherent to the buildings themselves in the decision-making process for housingdevelopments (in addition to other environmental considerations inherent to the developmentproject such as EIA results for instance).

The present investigation compared the effectiveness of an audible relaxation strategy and a subliminal suggestion strategy for lowering blood pressure in a normotensive population. These strategies were compared with each other and with a control group. Data were obtained from 108 females and 37 males on: 1) baseline systolic and diastolic blood pressure; and 2) end of treatment systolic and diastolic blood pressure.It was anticipated that if there was a difference between group means on the dependent measures, the difference would occur between 1) the audible relaxation instruction and the control conditions, and 2) the subliminal suggestion and the control conditions. A one-way multivariate analysis of variance was used to determine pretreatment equivalence of blood pressure in the three treatment groups. A one-way multivariate analysis of variance was used to test for statistical significance on the end of treatment data.The findings revealed that neither treatment strategy was more effective than the other, nor more effective than the control group at the end of treatment. Even though there were slight reductions from pretreatment blood pressure to end of treatment blood pressure in each group, there were no significant differences among groups. The validity and generalizability of these findings were discussed in light of previous research. Recommendations were made for further research.

Many of those who buy a PDA today do it for the purpose of time management. The PDA is meant to replace other artifacts like paper diaries and notebooks but in practice the PDA cannot be used as the sole resource for time management. We think that to succeed in making time management with a PDA more useful the design has to be grounded in an understanding of the existing technology and how it is used in practice. We achieved this understanding of the time management with a PDA by conducting an ethnographical study to find out how the PDA is used in practice, making a technical investigation of the PDA and cooperated with the PDA users throughout the design process. In this thesis we describe our design suggestion that improves the applications for time management in the PDA and take it a step closer to be the replacement for other time management artifacts that the users wanted.

This study examined the effects of verbal suggestion and music listening on mood changes of college students. The 135 volunteers were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (Condition 1/somber depiction with music, Condition 2/pleasant depiction with music, or Condition 3/music only). The Profile of Mood States was administered before and after each condition. Significant differences (p<.05) were found between pre and posttest scores within the groups; however, no significant differences were found among the groups for these same measures.
A music questionnaire was administered following the posttest which examined the subjects' preference for the music played, the frequency of experiencing images while listening to music, and their opinion concerning whether the depiction complemented the music. Implications of the results are discussed, and suggestions for future research are given.

Term weighting is a process of scoring and ranking a term’s relevance to a user’s information need or the importance of a term to a document. This thesis aims to investigate novel term weighting methods with applications in document representation for text classification, web document ranking, and ranked query suggestion. Firstly, this research proposes a new feature for document representation under the vector space model (VSM) framework, i.e., class specific document frequency (CSDF), which leads to a new term weighting scheme based on term frequency (TF) and the newly proposed feature. The experimental results show that the proposed methods, CSDF and TF-CSDF, improve the performance of document classification in comparison with other widely used VSM document representations. Secondly, a new ranking method called GCrank is proposed for re-ranking web documents returned from search engines using document classification scores. The experimental results show that the GCrank method can improve the performance of web returned document ranking in terms of several commonly used evaluation criteria. Finally, this research investigates several state-of-the-art ranked retrieval methods, adapts and combines them as well, leading to a new method called Tfjac for ranked query suggestion, which is based on the combination between TF-IDF and Jaccard coefficient methods. The experimental results show that Tfjac is the best method for query suggestion among the methods evaluated. It outperforms the most popularly used TF-IDF method in terms of increasing the number of highly relevant query suggestions.

Depuis la découverte du récepteur ORL1 (Opioid Receptor Like 1), récemment nommé OP4, et de la nociceptine, son ligand endogène, différents dérivés peptidiques ont été synthétisés. Noc(1-13)NH2, un agoniste d'OP4, injecté au niveau central, induit les mêmes effets comportementaux que la nociceptine : une hyperalgésie ou une analgésie en fonction de la dose, un effet anxiolytique et une augmentation de l'activité locomotrice, de la prise alimentaire et du comportement d'exploration. L'injection de [F/G]noc(1-13)NH2, induit des effets stimulants-moteur et anxiolytiques mais inhibe la stimulation motrice et exploratrice de la nociceptine ou Noc(1-13)NH2. L'injection de [Nphe1]noc(1-13)NH2, antagoniste d'OP4, est dépourvu d'effet propre mais antagonise les effets anxiolytiques de Noc(1-13)NH2. Nous avons observé une augmentation du taux de corticostérone après le stress d'une injection centrale. Cette augmentation est significativement moindre après l'injection de nociceptine. Les dérivés noc(1-13)NH2, [F/G]noc(1-13)NH2 et [Nphe1]noc(1-13)NH2, réduisent également cette augmentation de la corticostéronémie. Chez des rats ayant subi une désafférentation unilatérale de C5 à T1, nous avons étudié par autoradiographie la modification de la densité des sites de liaison de la [3H]nociceptine au niveau de cette liaison. Nous avons observé une réduction significative de la liaison dans la corne dorsale (laminae I et II) du côté ipsilatéral à la lésion. Aucune modification significative n'a été observée entre les cornes ventrales. Par autoradiographie de la liaison de la [3H]nociceptine dans le cerveau de Rat, nous avons montré un déplacement hétérogène par [F/G]noc(1-13)NH2 significatif en fonction des régions de marquage. Ces résultats ont été confirmés sur des fractions de membranes issues de structures cérébrales où nous avons montré la présence d'un seul site de liaison dans l'amygdale et le cortex frontal et de deux sites dans l'hippocampe et l'hypothalamus<br>Since the identication of nociceptin, many other ligands of the ORL1 receptor(Opioid Receptor Like 1) now call OP4, have been synthesised. Recommender systems are core components for many companies. These companies constantly improve their functionality aiming to maximize user satisfaction from their products. The only evaluation of the recommender systems usually done by the companies is performed in an online experiment on actual data leaving them without any offline tools to consider and postponing the quality assessment to the time when the algorithm is deployed and used in production. In this work, we describe a software evaluation tool for a selected recommender algorithm applicable for offline cases. We discuss different properties that are important for the assessment of the chosen algorithm, present the user behavior that best reflects expected real life attitude, debate various data sets (available on the Internet and provided by the company) suitable for the offline evaluation. We introduce an extensible software tool for offline assessment that is integrated into test environment created and maintained by Salesforce.com. The tool aims to be exible allowing data sets, user behavior and metrics to be easily switched or used for evaluation of other recommender algorithms. We also describe a set of recommendations on how the selected algorithm could be improved supporting these enhancement suggestions with an evaluation performed using the implemented tool.

Introduction - This research aimed to investigate implicit emotional memory and the effects of positive suggestion during colonoscopy with conscious sedation. Evidence of emotional arousal in response to a word stimulus, without conscious recall, was investigated Method - During colonoscopy, under midazolam sedation and fentanyl analgesia, participants (N=25) heard either positive suggestion or nursery rhyme titles. Measures of mood, intra-operative distress, post-traumatic stress traits and sleep disturbance of the two groups, were compared throughout three time periods. Sedative effect on emotional memory formation was examined pre and post-procedurally, using the Skin Conductance Response (SCR) technique to compare participants' physiological reactions to nonsense-words, two emotive and one neutral. Procedural-based questionnaires and mood measures were completed one hour and two days after colonoscopy. Results - There was a significant difference between distress levels in suggestion-groups with the positive suggestion group demonstrating less intra-operative distress. There was no significant effect of what participants heard under sedation on mood-disturbance scores across time. Neither depression nor anxiety was affected by type of audio stimuli. Neither group showed any significant difference in levels of intrusive post-procedural memories or levels of dissociation. No participants demonstrated changes in dissociation post endoscopic examination. SCR differences showed physiological effects of priming with emotive words. Participants demonstrating implicit memory had significantly higher sleep disturbance scores than those with explicit memory for intra-procedural events. Conclusion –Hearing positive suggestion whilst under conscious sedation reduced intra-procedural distress and implicit memory for colonoscopy increased sleep disturbance in the days following the procedure. Evidence was found for midazolam sedation between 2-3mg impairing explicit memory whilst leaving implicit memory intact. Due to the low number of willing participants findings were tentative and difficult to generalise to a wider population.

Current web search engines, such as Google, Yahoo!, and Bing, rank the set of documents S retrieved in response to a user query Q and display each document with a title and a snippet, which serves as an abstract of the corresponding document in S. Snippets, however, are not as useful as they are designed for, i.e., to assist search engine users to quickly identify results of interest, if they exist, without browsing through the documents in S, since they (i) often include very similar information and (ii) do not capture the main content of the corresponding documents. Moreover, when the intended information need specified in a search query is ambiguous, it is difficult, if not impossible, for a search engine to identify precisely the set of documents that satisfy the user's intended request. Furthermore, a document title retrieved by web search engines is not always a good indicator of the content of the corresponding document, since it is not always informative. All these design problems can be solved by our proposed query-based, web informative summarization engine, denoted Q-WISE. Q-WISE clusters documents in S, which allows users to view segregated document collections created according to the specific topic covered in each collection, and generates a concise/comprehensive summary for each collection/cluster of documents. Q-WISE is also equipped with a query suggestion module that provides a guide to its users in formulating a keyword query, which facilitates the web search and improves the precision and recall of the search results. Experimental results show that Q-WISE is highly effective and efficient in generating a high quality summary for each cluster of documents on a specific topic, retrieved in response to a Q-WISE user's query. The empirical study also shows that Q-WISE's clustering algorithm is highly accurate, labels generated for the clusters are useful and often reflect the topic of the corresponding clustered documents, and the performance of the query suggestion module of Q-WISE is comparable to commercial web search engines.

One of the techniques used to induce trance state in shamanic ceremonies is monotonous drumming. According to previous EEG research, certain patterns of drumming cause an increase in power of alpha and theta frequencies of the listener. Present study aimed to determine, if suggestion to experience trance state could increase the relative alpha and theta amplitude and the intensity of experienced state. A group of twenty-four subjects participated in the study. Suggestion to experience trance state decreased alpha frequency power during the drumming condition. No other significant effects of suggestion or drumming were found.

Le sujet de la thèse est l'extraction et la segmentation des vêtements à partir d'images en utilisant des techniques de la vision par ordinateur, de l'apprentissage par ordinateur et de la description d'image, pour la recommandation de manière non intrusive aux utilisateurs des produits similaires provenant d'une base de données de vente. Nous proposons tout d'abord un extracteur d'objets dédié à la segmentation de la robe en combinant les informations locales avec un apprentissage préalable. Un détecteur de personne localises des sites dans l'image qui est probable de contenir l'objet. Ensuite, un processus d'apprentissage intra-image en deux étapes est est développé pour séparer les pixels de l'objet de fond. L'objet est finalement segmenté en utilisant un algorithme de contour actif qui prend en compte la segmentation précédente et injecte des connaissances spécifiques sur la courbure locale dans la fonction énergie. Nous proposons ensuite un nouveau framework pour l'extraction des vêtements généraux en utilisant une procédure d'ajustement globale et locale à trois étapes. Un ensemble de modèles initialises un processus d'extraction d'objet par un alignement global du modèle, suivi d'une recherche locale en minimisant une mesure de l'inadéquation par rapport aux limites potentielles dans le voisinage. Les résultats fournis par chaque modèle sont agrégés, mesuré par un critère d'ajustement globale, pour choisir la segmentation finale. Dans notre dernier travail, nous étendons la sortie d'un réseau de neurones Fully Convolutional Network pour inférer le contexte à partir d'unités locales (superpixels). Pour ce faire, nous optimisons une fonction énergie, qui combine la structure à grande échelle de l'image avec le local structure superpixels, en recherchant dans l'espace de toutes les possibilité d'étiquetage. De plus, nous introduisons une nouvelle base de données RichPicture, constituée de 1000 images pour l'extraction de vêtements à partir d'images de mode. Les méthodes sont validées sur la base de données publiques et se comparent favorablement aux autres méthodes selon toutes les mesures de performance considérées<br>The topic of the thesis is the extraction and segmentation of clothing items from still images using techniques from computer vision, machine learning and image description, in view of suggesting non intrusively to the users similar items from a database of retail products. We firstly propose a dedicated object extractor for dress segmentation by combining local information with a prior learning. A person detector is applied to localize sites in the image that are likely to contain the object. Then, an intra-image two-stage learning process is developed to roughly separate foreground pixels from the background. Finally, the object is finely segmented by employing an active contour algorithm that takes into account the previous segmentation and injects specific knowledge about local curvature in the energy function.We then propose a new framework for extracting general deformable clothing items by using a three stage global-local fitting procedure. A set of template initiates an object extraction process by a global alignment of the model, followed by a local search minimizing a measure of the misfit with respect to the potential boundaries in the neighborhood. The results provided by each template are aggregated, with a global fitting criterion, to obtain the final segmentation.In our latest work, we extend the output of a Fully Convolution Neural Network to infer context from local units(superpixels). To achieve this we optimize an energy function,that combines the large scale structure of the image with the locallow-level visual descriptions of superpixels, over the space of all possiblepixel labellings. In addition, we introduce a novel dataset called RichPicture, consisting of 1000 images for clothing extraction from fashion images.The methods are validated on the public database and compares favorably to the other methods according to all the performance measures considered

In almost all supply chains, materials need to be stored or buffered, implying that manufacturing companies need effective replenishment methods. However, this is challenging, since companies must balance inventory costs and customer service in complex and different situations. Therefore, it is important to choose replenishment methods carefully. One well-known and widespread method is Material Requirements Planning (MRP). But the method has problems, such as regarding volume flexibility. There are other methods, but the literature lacks case studies and detailed descriptions and analysis of them, especially for visually oriented methods. Therefore, it is important to explore different methods for materials supply. The purpose of this study is to analyze the application of visually oriented replenishment methods in manufacturing industry and further to design a tentative decision tool for selecting methods. The research aims to provide some answers to three key questions. The first research question concerns general factors that are important for evaluating how effective replenishment methods are. From the literature review, different factors emerged such as product characteristics (fit in the Kraljic matrix, volume issues, size, etc.); information, trust, and geographical proximity between supplier and customer; and different logistics goals (delivery service elements, tied-up capital, use of resources, inventory accuracy). It is also import to include the basic principles methods are related to. The factors were summarized in an analysis model, which is structured with three main areas (planning environment/conditions, basic principles, and effects). The model is used to analyze four case studies. The second research question focuses on the characteristics for visually orientedreplenishment methods. Examples of characteristics are: easy to understand and operate, offers uncomplicated flows, substantially applicable for noncritical and leverage parts with high yearly requirement and fairly even consumption, provides potential for reduced errors in stores/flows, potential for providing high delivery service and low levels of tied-up capital and resource utilization. The third research question focuses on what a tentative decision tool for selecting replenishment methods might look like, based on the factors that emerged from the other research questions and studies by others. In order to achieve an efficient materials supply, companies need to consider these factors when selecting replenishment methods. The decision tool consists of different steps, considering aspects of the planning environment/conditions in relation to the product and the supplier. <p>The purpose of this thesis is to make a thorough but compact description of the international laws concerning solid garbage generated by vessels and sludge treatment. It is also to construct a pamphlet that can be used as a guide by ports when constructing their own information sheets to the vessels. The questions given to us from Baltic Master II were: what does the international legislation state about waste handling from vessels and in the port facilities, both sludge and solid garbage? Describe routines for receiving sludge, with concern taken to the rules that apply today. Describe routines for receiving sorted garbage and recycling, with concern taken to the rules that apply today. Look at the present symbols and labelling and develop a standard for vessels and port facilities. To solve these questions we choose an investigative method based on a literature study. The research of earlier studies showed that the parties involved consider the waste- and sludgetreatment to be flawed. In some cases the problems are fictitious or exaggerated. The main problem originates from the fact that there are no uniform routines for the interaction between vessel and port. Although there is more then one way to deal with this problem, we have concluded that the best way to improve the present day situation is to implement uniform routines. To make the routines effective they should be developed and agreed upon by the parties involved taking into consideration present day international legislation. In this thesis we present a suggestion on such a routine.</p>

Over the last few years, pervasive systems have experienced some interesting
development. Nevertheless, human-human interaction can also take
advantage of those systems by using their ability to perceive the surrounding
environment. In this dissertation, we have developed a pervasive system - named
ConversationaL Aware Suggestion SYstem (CLASSY) - which is aware of
the conversational context and suggests the users potentially useful documents
or that, somehow, save time executing a specific task. We have
also proposed two different approaches - the Neighborhood one, that uses
semantic similarity, based on proximity data in order to classify the relationship
between tokens; and the Reinforcement Learning one, that uses
implicit feedback associated with each suggestion as a source of knowledge
that can be used to improve the system's performance over time.
The conducted tests showed that these two approaches not only enhanced
the pervasive behavior of the system, but also increased its global performance.
A case study regarding the importance of feedback on context-limited environments
was also carried out, whose results showed that it is still a useful
source of knowledge regardless the conversational environment's characteristics.<br>Ao longo dos últimos anos, os sistemas pervasivos têm sido fonte de um

podem tirar vantagem deste tipo de sistemas recorrendo à sua capacidade

Nesta dissertação, foi desenvolvido um sistema pervasivo - chamado Sistema
de Sugestões Sensível ao Contexto (CLASSY) - que está consciente
dos vários contextos conversacionais e que sugere documentos considerados
potencialmente úteis para os utilizadores ou que, de alguma forma,
poupam tempo na execução de uma tarefa específica. Foram também propostas
duas aproximações diferentes - a de vizinhança, que usa similaridade
semântica, baseando-se em proximidades de forma a classificar relações entre
palavras; e a de Aprendizagem por Reforço, que usa feedback implícito
dos utilizadores associado a cada sugestão, como fonte de conhecimento
que pode ser utilizado para melhorar a performance do sistema ao longo do
tempo.
Os testes realizados mostraram que as aproximações acima referidas melhoraram
não só o comportamento pervasivo do sistema, mas também a sua
performance global.
Foi, ainda, analisado um caso de estudo referente à importância de feedback
em ambientes com contexto limitado, onde os resultados mostraram que o
mesmo continua a ser uma importante fonte de conhecimento, independentemente

This thesis examines techniques that can be used to evaluate systems that solve the complex task of suggesting points of interest to users. A traveller visiting an unfamiliar, foreign city might be looking for a place to have fun in the last few hours before returning home. Our traveller might browse various search engines and travel websites to find something that he is interested in doing, however this process is time consuming and the visitor may want to find some suggestion quickly.
We will consider the type of system that is able to handle this complex request in such a way that the user is satisfied. Because the type of suggestion one person wants will differ from the type of suggestion another person wants we will consider systems that incorporate some level of personalization. In this work we will develop user profiles that are based on real users and set up experiments that many research groups can participate in, competing to develop the best techniques for implementing this kind of system. These systems will make suggestion of attractions to visit in various different US cities to many users.
This thesis is divided into two stages. During the first stage we will look at what information will go into our user profiles and what information we need to know about the users in order to decide whether they would visit an attraction. The second stage will be deciding how to evaluate the suggestions that various systems make in order to determine which system is able to make the best suggestions.

Some recent interpreters of Eleaticism have suggested
interpretations of the Parmenidean doctrine that are
accommodating of pluralism, in varying degrees. If such
interpretations are viable, then the way is cleared for a Pro-
Eleatic Interpretation of the second part of Plato's
Parmenides.
There is historical evidence for the existence of a
Pro-Eleatic Interpretation of Part Two in the early part of
the present millennium.
A review of the text of the Parmenides reveals that it is

It has been shown that collocation is important in helping language learners achieve native-like fluency. In the field of English for academic purpose, there are also more and more researchers recognizing this important feature in academic writing. It is often argued that collocation can influence the effectiveness of a piece of writing and the lack of such knowledge might cause cumulative loss of precision.
Previous research indicates effective collocation acquisition needs learners’ awareness while they learn vocabulary. However, this strategy might not be easy to apply in a real-life classroom. We not only need to equip language instructors with rich knowledge of collocation but also need to help instructors correct students collocation errors, which is labor intensive and time consuming. In addition, to automate collocation suggestion via language technology requires considerable efforts. A proper collocation suggestion might involve knowing the correct semantic as well as pragmatic usages. It is thus still an unresolved issue in need of particular attention.
In our thesis, we prove the feasibility of using a machine learning method to build a writing assistant which is aimed at automatically prompting learners with collocation suggestions in academic writing. Given an input sentence, which requires collocation suggestions, we build a data-driven classifier and treat the outcome of the classification as suggested substitutions in question. Moreover, for a robust classifier, feature selection is the key component. We make use of the target’s contextual linguistic clues to elicit the most relevant suggestions from the reference corpus of scholarly texts.
We carried out an experiment focusing on one of the major types of collocation problems, verb-noun collocations. The proposed classifier along with contextual information can satisfactorily return suggestions with the best hit rank in the experiment. Our framework of computer-assisted academic writing can facilitate learner-writers’ collocation uses and help to transfer that knowledge to their future writing.

The travel agency has been one of the largest industries in e-commerce. There are many enterprise resource planning systems built in online travel agencies, so that almost every transaction and tours can be arranged through the Internet. To provide a well-protected environment, enterprises can use PKI technology to ensure the safety of online data exchanging.
Online travel agencies interact with consumers through the web-site. Not only the basic protection like firewall, intrusion detection, and vulnerability scanning but also the development and the executive of security policies can reduce the risk that enterprises may encounter.
Fines, litigations and the company's brand image damages may come after data leakages such as information of clients or intellectual property of companies. Government has actively promoted personal data protection law and huge amount of fines to improve the bindings. Coupled with many fraud credit cards used by the malicious users, companies have to assess how to reinforce information security to maintain its profit and upgrade its competitiveness.
PKI technology is recognized as the most reliable and trusted solution, but the complexities and high cost of implementation made it difficult to apply. So, the author here tries to provide a mode of operation for online travel agencies to not only extend its services by the Internet but also provide a safe Internet transaction environment for its clients.

User queries are usually very short with diverse meanings, and users have to spend more time browsing search result. Thus, term suggestion has become an important research topic. By providing potential relevant terms around the query, we can improve the query representation and the retrieval effectiveness.
In this paper, we extract relevant terms from web documents by pseudo relevance feedback. First, we fetch the search results by the search engine API and store them in the Cassandra distributed database. Second, we use statistical methods on information retrieval. The goal is to select more relevant terms with the original query, and calculate the degree of correlation with the query. Experimental results show that relevant terms could be found at top-ranked list. The results also show that the Bigrams plays an important role in providing relevant term suggestions.

Firstly, this research analyzes the historical problems the applicable data analysis approaches and other information of the original solutions which are related to data analysis. Secondly, a model is developed for analyzing the solutions related to data analysis and transforms them into structured forms. After that, the proposed model can be applied for searching related data analysis solutions based on the problem characteristics. In order to distinguish the related and the unrelated solutions, this model evaluates the likelihood between those solutions by the linear combinations of the solution characteristics. Further, this model utilizes the simulated annealing algorithm to acquire the combinations which can distinguish the related and unrelated solutions. Finally, this model can suggest the data analysis approaches according to the approaches used in the related solutions used. As a whole, the proposed model can assist managers realizing data analysis approaches in an efficient and effective way.

Therefore, the willingness of knowledge sharing among employee is the original source of organization knowledge creation. The level of employees’ participation in organizational activities and knowledge sharing plays
a vital key to knowledge accumulation. By implementing the “Suggestion System” to encourage employees sharing knowledge and skills, as well as managing conflicts will positively contribute to performance. “Suggestion System” is then a key to knowledge management.
The object of this research is to investigate the influence of conflict on the willingness of knowledge sharing and the affect on the performance. According to literature, the conflicts include the relationship conflict, opinion conflict and process conflict. The performance includes the organization performance and suggestion quality. Participants are selected from the industries that implementing suggesting system. This research adopts empirical research, a total of 210 paper-based questionnaires are sent and 155 valid questionnaires are collected. Descriptive statistics analysis, reliability analysis, factor analysis and hierarchical regression analysis are employed to analyze the collected data.
The result suggested that the knowledge sharing is significantly related to performance. However, when the conflict is high, the performance will be reduced which indicates that implementing the “Suggestion System" contributes to knowledge sharing and performance but the level of conflict will affect the willingness of knowledge sharing and departmental performance.
