Abstract:
Abstract This is the first new edition of Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises since its publication in 1926. A visually attractive and readable volume, it includes useful material such as early drafts of the novel and the discarded opening chapter that Hemingway cut at the urging of F. Scott Fitzgerald. What is disappointing is what is missing, notably a statement of editorial principles, as well as footnotes elucidating dated references and now-obscure allusions. Unfortunately, this “new” Sun has been edited, not by scholars, not by the professionals whom Hemingway admired, but by amateurs—family

Ernest Heminway was interested in the delineation of characters as well as different facets of man’s life through the characters of the novels. Hemingway’s first novel, The Sun Also Rises is about ups and down of man’s life. The novel gives an image of emptiness and futility of life. As the novel progresses, Hemingway presents a light picture of man’s life in the heavy odds of life. Hemingway tries to assert the fact that there is always light after darkness and joy after sorrow. This research paper is a sincere effort to justify Hemingway’s philosophy of optimism and light.

Hemingway read Peter Viertel's second attempt at a working script—the one titled "Revised Temporary"—and penciled in over fifty critical comments on it. Hemingway was most aroused by the choice of one word—"impotent." Jake Barnes "was not impotent," Hemingway wrote, but the film as produced stuck with the word. "Isn't it pretty to think so?" The ambiguity of this question, posed by Jake Barnes in the last line of The Sun Also Rises, is a reflection of the novel's evolving definition of what constitutes a relationship. As the focus of Hemingway criticism has slowly broken from tired discussions of misogyny a space has opened for considering the complex ways his writings address questions of gendered identity. Through this lens critics have asked exactly what kind of man and women Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley represent. For decades critics and scholars have viewed this final line as having a negat

The main method used in the investigative analysis is close reading of the novel, and the essay relates this close reading to theories expressed in a number of critical essays and articles regarding the novel itself and other subjects relevant to the analysis. Furthermore, the relationships between the main character and other male characters are compared. Nearly all discussions of Hemingway and his work touch on the theme of masculinity, a recurrent theme in all of his works. Examinations of Hemingway and his relationship to masculinity have almost unanimously treated the author as a misogynist and a champion of violent masculinity. However, since the posthumous publication of The Garden of Eden in 1986, there has been much discussion of Hemingway’s uncharacteristic use of androgynous characters in the novel. Critics have taken this as a clue that Hemingway possessed a complex attitude regarding gender fluidity, but have failed to examine the c
