Abstract:
The paper examines the painting by K. Petrov-Vodkin “Bathing of the Red Horse”, its reflection and artistic refraction in poetic texts. The study opens with describing the artistic image of the horse in world mythology, religions, folklore, art, world and domestic literature. The horse is one of the most mythologized animals: it is the sun-horse, the fire-horse, a symbol of death and resurrection, a symbol of male power, the embodiment of a connection with the supernatural world. The cult of the horse underlies various amulets, for example, in the decoration of a Russian hut, crowned with a horse, in amulets with the image of a horse's head, in relation to a horseshoe as a symbol of happiness in home, etc. The painting “Bathing the Red Horse” was exhibited in 1912. Until now, the meaning of this canvas is not completely clear, so that the picture has many readings and interpretations. The horse`s red color specifically caused various disputes. After the revolution of 1917, this powerful red horse was perceived as a symbol of revolution, a symbol of change. In this sense, the picture is truly prophetic: very soon the whole world will turn red with the First World War, the revolution, fascism in Germany, and the Second World War. Four horsemen of the Apocalypse raced hard through the 20th century. The horse is a symbol of nature, of the huge world surrounding man, unpredictable, elemental, scary and strong in its own way. Red horse — The Sun Horse, a symbol of male strength, hybrid of a horse and a bird gives rise to the hope that he will not throw a teenage boy to the ground and crush him, but on the contrary, with all his strength, endurance, patience, will help him and carry the boy to the bright side of life. It became a kind of response to the mood of decadence and hopelessness among the Russian intelligentsia of the early twentieth century. As the paper shows, in poetic texts one may also come across a different understanding of the picture (personification of a happy childhood, modern Russia, symbol of a better time to come, etc.).

Phuyal, Komal. "Writing and Rewriting the Pharmakon: The Use of Horse in Modern Nepali Fiction." SCHOLARS: Journal of Arts & Humanities 6, no. 2 (2024): 14–23. http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/sjah.v6i2.68736.

Abstract:
First introduced by Jacques Derrida, the Greek usage of the concept ‘pharmakon’ refers to three things: either the poison, the remedy, or the scapegoat. In modern Nepali literature, the horse as pharmakon has appeared as the most self-contradictory image: it has referred to the loss, assertion, and reinforcement of honor. This paper takes BP Koirala’s “The Colonel’s Horse,” Madan Mani Dixit’s “Lattu Miyako Ghodi” [Lattu Miya’s Mare], Nayan Raj Pandey’s Ular [Imbalance] (1996), and Mandira Madhushree’s “Budhanko Ghodi” [Budhan’s Mare] (2017) to see how each of the authors makes use of a horse to discuss the modern values in Nepali society. To address this issue, the present study aims to explore the uses of horses in Nepali literature to explore the inner composition of self and the contents lying therein. On the one hand, such analysis contributes to animal studies in modern Nepali literature; on the other, it highlights the changing perceptions of horses in Nepali society. The creative artists use a particular symbol to discuss the unique contemporary phenomenon through it. The authors from Koirala to Madhushree have found the horse to be a point of departure to reflect on the modern world's inner and outer reality. On the whole, the selected Nepali literary texts treat the horse as a symbol to bring psychological and socio-economic reality into it, thus pondering on it as a modern pharmakon in modern Nepali fiction.

Abstract:
The paper discusses the role of the horse as a character in popular literature. It aims to demonstrate the often overlooked significance of the horse in works of popular epic and lyric poetry, stories and traditions. Special attention is devoted to Šarac, the horse of Marko Kraljević. Šarac cries, shows anger, drinks wine and has premonitions of Marko's death. Analysis of the works in which Šarac and other horses appear demonstrates their significance to the hero as a symbol and essential component of the hero's image, but also draws attention to other qualities and roles - the horse as power, comfort, source of sadness, loyalty, desire, trophy, apple of discord, beauty, pride, obstacle, helper, source of danger, promise, etc.

Abstract:
In June 2022, after a two-and-a-half-year COVID-19 hiatus, I joyfully returned to Europe for a research trip. My purpose was to develop further my next monograph on queering animal symbols, specifically investigating the history of the Dalecarlian (Dala) horse [Dalahäst]. Dala horses are brightly painted wooden toys that were carved and decorated by farmers through the long Swedish winters as early as the seventeenth century. Thereafter, Dala horses became a national icon and symbol of Sweden at the 1939 World's Fair in New York City. Scheduling also allowed me to attend Midsommar (Midsummer) celebrations in Dalarna (Dalecarlia) County,1 Sweden (Fig. 1). This is the region not only where Dala horses first appeared, but also where many of the traditions surrounding the folkloric, highly theatrical, and now de facto Swedish national holiday of Midsommar most likely originated.

Abstract:
The horse, which has been a source of inspiration in many fields from architecture to art in Turkish civilizations rising on horses from Turkestan to Anatolia, has been an indispensable element and cult at every stage of Turkish cultural history with the words “The horse is the wing of the Turk” in Divan-ı Lügat'it Türk written by Kashgarlı Mahmut and “A man on foot has no hope” in Dede Korkut. The horse, which is associated with the symbol of “time” in Kutadgu Bilig and with the “Big Dipper Constellation” in Turkish cosmology, has become famous as a close friend and valuable asset of bards such as Dadaloğlu, Köroğlu, Karacaoğlan. The horse, which has made significant contributions to the development of cultures and civilizations in the historical process, has been described as a social and emotional being in many myths, legends, epics and stories about the Turks and has been used to treat people thanks to its strong intuition. In this context, in this article, the history, care, nutrition and hypnotherapy methods of Ahal-Teke horses, which have an important place with their elegance, posture, anatomy and universal value, indispensable helpers of human life, mythologically called “Gök horses-Nesey horses-Turkmen horses” in the literature, will be discussed.

Abstract:
D. H. Lawrence is seeking for the consciousness of life throughout his lifelong creation; he resorts to animals that bear closer connections with nature mainly in the 1920s. Based on three short stories which mention ‘horse’ in the title, “The Horse-dealer’s daughter” (1922), “The Woman Who Rode Away” (1925) and “The Rocking-horse Winner” (1926), this essay illustrates how horses function as Lawrence’s pastoral ideal, pursuit for the primitive and shape of humanity. From the background that represents the past agricultural lifestyle to a life vehicle that carries the woman to freedom, and finally to a symbol with fantasy that mirrors crises in human relations, Lawrence’s deepening attention towards the ‘horse’ belabors his life pursuit of the primitive and balances between the binary oppositions of animality and humanity, finding for modern people a way out of distortions under industrialization and civilization.

Abstract:
This article examines the history of Russian colonization in Kazakhstan, focusing on identity, resistance, and independence within Russia’s neo-imperial ambitions. It addresses the socio-political barriers in postcolonial Kazakhstan due to ties with Russia and explores how the Soviet migration policies shaped Kazakhstan’s demographic and political landscape. The study outlines the phases of Russian colonization, contrasting Russian narratives of a civilizing mission with Kazakh perspectives on exploitation and cultural erasure. Using postcolonial theory, it deconstructs these narratives and reveals power dynamics. Kazakh literature and poetry are analyzed as mediums of resistance, emphasizing the horse as a symbol of cultural identity. The article concludes by discussing the post-Soviet cultural transformations and the role of literature in nation-building, highlighting the importance of reclaiming cultural symbols and myths for understanding Kazakhstan’s colonial history and postcolonial transformation.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the house as symbol of God, self, and body. This is a way to explore the expression of individuality both incorporated in, and invoked by the middle-class single family home, particularly for women. The theme, "the temple within," is intended to create a conceptual framework for the identification of activities which give the elements of the house meaning for the occupants. The elements of house, garden, hearth, entrance, windows, attic/stair/cellar, and walls and spaces, are identified through the analysis of primary sources. These are the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation Competition Series stock plans from 1947 to 1963, as well as two suburban homes from the Carlington neighbourhood in Ottawa, Ontario. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the appropriateness of these symbols of home as a vehicle for women's identity of self.

Este estudo culmina numa análise comparativa entre habitações articuladas a partir de um centro ígneo; ABSTRACT: Fire appears to be in the origins of the house and the idea of home, initially established as the center of the dwelling. Progressively has lost its importance, moving from the center to the side walls. This work intends to develop the concept of fire as the center and symbol of the house, while founder of the domestic space and the beginning of dwelling, as well as a qualifying element of architectural space. The intention of making this concept one of theoretical exploration appears to contribute to the understanding and design of architectural project, within the contemporary context. To this end, it analyzes the evolution of the space of fire in the house, as well as the study of the different sensory, cognitive and symbolic components attached to it. This work culminates in a comparative analysis between houses articulated from an igneous center.

Abstract:
The following thesis examines the development of the Louisiana Superdome from a concept that created division amongst the people of Louisiana, including those in the New Orleans metropolitan area, to a facility that would serve as, "a symbol of our recovery". This thesis begins with the fanfare and euphoria from the reopening of the Superdome in September 2006 following millions of dollars worth of damage from Hurricane Katrina and from those using it as a "shelter of last resort". It then introduces some of the major players in the Superdome's development from a divisive concept into a symbol of the community. This thesis examines the factors in the evolution of the meaning of the Superdome for those in the surrounding communities. The factors include political ideology, economic conditions, race relations, and entertainment.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning, Program in Media Arts and Sciences, 2002.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 136-140).<br>This thesis proposes a framework to model intervention in education systems using technology: the Learning Atmosphere. The motivation is to show that innovative learning with expressive technologies can happen even in economically disadvantaged regions, such as public education systems in Brazil, where our case studies took place. The contribution of the thesis is to explore ways in which mutual enrichment can be achieved through collective displacements of habits and mindsets taken for granted. The case studies demonstrate the importance and possibility of a powerful learning experience that builds up from the local culture and expertise, elements often disregarded in schools. Technology plays a central role, enabling diverse and innovative ways of working, expressing and building. In addition, it makes possible epistemological diversity, empowering of students and fulfillment to teachers, reinforcing the community's own livelihood. The core elements within the Learning Atmosphere are: -- Enhance the concept of generative themes using technology. -- Mix and match expressive media, especially low-cost technologies. -- Invest on relationship building and challenge established power relations. The legend of the Trojan Horse has the important role of warning us against the easy way into schools, the trivialization of ideas and the superficial experiences that do not change the praxis and mindsets in schools.<br>Paulo Blikstein.<br>S.M.

Abstract:
I create art, not out of a deep understanding of the world around me, but out of a lack of one. Human psychology, motives, behaviors, stressors, intentions and identity are the themes that boggle me the most. Therefore, it is only natural that my work would be fueled by the questions these themes pose. In the past I sought to understand what pushes people to make certain choices and how can the world around us affect the formation of identity. Currently I wonder about identity in terms of what do people use to form and reinforce identity both real and fabricated. In addition to this I am working through the question of what creates worth for an object; it’s function or its fabricated identity. Through the use of photography, video, sculpture and installation I explore the possibilities of questions and also understandings that my work can create.

Abstract:
One of the most meaningful duties of poetry is to examine small moments in life—the fleeting, the transitory, the quotidian—and make them sacred. Its title derived from a conflation of the colloquialism “Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades,” Horse Grenade is concerned with questions of identity and proximity—physical, mental, and emotional—which weave themselves throughout my work. I am intrigued by the fluctuating correlation between spiritual closeness and temporal distance, the way it defies definition and logic. In an effort to address this phenomenon, I immerse the reader into foreign cultures and the frequently extreme circumstances of everyday life. In doing so, I seek invention, but also return to familial relationships and personal experience, ranging from rediscovering my heritage to my father breaking into nuclear power plants. My intention as a poet is to make honest and unique observations, developing them into a deeper understanding.

Abstract:
‘Horse Boy’ outlines the theoretical and contextual framings of a series performance based video works exploring a personal working relationship with animals, predominantly horses. These performances develop into durational exercises where the power balance between human and animal is tested and examined. Notions of catharsis and the sublime are investigated to frame the experience and analysis of these performances for both the participants and observers. ‘Horse Boy’ examines the complexities of the role of animals in art, reflecting on the practice of contemporary artists who employ animals as either participants or symbols in their own work. The resolved artwork lends itself to future research that further subverts the power relationship between human and animal within artistic performances by approaching such work as a collaborative practice between the human and animal.

Abstract:
The role of the horse (or "remount") raises different questions than does that of cavalry: the latter questions concern the organization and operations of a mounted arm, while the former concern the acquisition and deployment of the horses needed for that arm. Chapter 4, "Remounts and Wastage," employs government reports and proposals, popular and fine art and photography, and fictional and non-fictional literature and focuses, unlike the first three chapters, on military horses rather than horsemanship. Treating horses both as matériel and as symbol, the chapter discusses the breeding, acquisition, transportation, deployment, and massive "wastage" of horses (loss by death or other causes) in cavalry and artillery in the Great War, as well as the treatment of warhorses in Great War art and literature.

Abstract:
Architecture is the first of Hegel’s “individual arts”—which also include sculpture, painting, music, and poetry—discussed in Part III of his lectures on aesthetics. These arts are defined by the senses they engage. Architecture’s task is to give shape to tactile materials in order to house the spiritual. Hegel describes architecture’s origins in the Tower of Babel and figures representing natural forces, then considers the emergence of architecture proper in Egyptian pyramids. Architecture reached its highest point in the classical world, where its function—housing the spiritual—was made explicit by structures that balanced the organic and the mathematical. Romantic architecture, for instance the gothic splendor of the Cologne Cathedral, instead hides its functionality and becomes more sculptural. Hegel also discusses horticulture as an example of humans defining space in an architectural way.

Abstract:
The article deals with the phenomenon of everyday life through the prism of philosophical and aesthetic aspects. Modern society has begun to realize the significance of everyday life, discovering in ordinary deeds and actions cultural and social grounds reflecting the values and norms of society. The study shows that even in the routine there is harmony and beauty worthy of analysis. The aesthetics of everyday life are manifested through art forms such as architecture, design and applied arts, creating an artistic perception of our surroundings. Special attention is paid to the concept of home as a symbol of synthesis of different aspects of life and its role in social and cultural life is analyzed. The house acts not only as a place of shelter, but also as a significant cultural space that influences the development of personality and the establishment of life values. Through the prism of philosophical ideas of Yu. The concept of home as a source of peace, personal development and a symbol of inner peace is studied through the prism of philosophical ideas of Y.M. Lotman, A. Schütz,V.V. Rozanov and G. Bashlyar. Everyday life is interpreted as an important part of human existence, saturated with symbols and meanings that reflect the deep structures of culture and social relationships. In the era of new thinking, it contributes to deciphering the meaning and value of ordinary events and actions, which helps to evaluate our lives and the world around us in a different way.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper is concerned with the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the automatic generation of material take-offs (MTOs) based on piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&amp;IDs). McDermott (MDR) AI team worked closely with domain experts to establish a business case for the automation of MTO generation from P&amp;IDs. Furthermore, upon conducting market research, a decision was made to pursue an in-house development to protect company IP, enhance the tool over time, and increase MDR's AI capabilities. A tool was created that uses advanced Deep Learning for text and symbol recognition to identify symbols and text. Thus, the results are associated and stored in an MTO. Despite the existence of 3D software packages such as SmartPlant P&amp;ID and AVEVA, often a digital format of P&amp;IDs does not exist (e.g., legacy drawings) or is not accessible (e.g., clients only share PDFs at time of bid to protect sensitive information). In such cases, Piping Engineers spend hours going through drawings manually, identifying symbols, and generating MTOs in Excel spreadsheets. This process is error-prone which can lead to poor estimations and in turn cost overruns and delayed schedules. An AI-based web application was developed that can free up skilled engineers from manually generating MTOs and save hours. The developed AI solution primarily enables the identification and extraction of symbols and their associated characteristics from P&amp;IDs and populates MTOs. A user interface that allows engineers to check results and provide feedback as they process P&amp;IDs, enables the users’ feedback to be captured by the tool to further enhance the tool's accuracy. The MTO generation can optimize the estimating process by saving hours and reducing mistakes. The more mature the tool becomes, the more this potential is realized on live projects and becomes a true game changer. A closely linked and future application of this tool, often referred to as digitalization of P&amp;IDs, can be used to extract all information from P&amp;IDs. This information can be formed into a highly valuable database of past project data that can be fed to Machine Learning models and make insightful predictions.

Abstract:
The article reveals the semantics and symbols of Gagauz dwelling and of its important parts. Th e analysis of the interior space semiotics is carried out on two planes — a horizontal and vertical one. Th e most signifi cant oppositions are the following: exterior-interior, centre-periphery, top-bottom, open-closed. Th e semiotics of Gagauz dwelling’s parts and their role unfold the system of the popular view of the world and of man’s daily life in such environment. A traditional Gagauz dwelling is represented by two parts: living rooms and a non-residential room (a symbolic centre of the house), which diff ers in its national decoration. In each room, the main semantic meaning is carried by iconostasis, the triadic structure of which replicates the structure of the universe and symbolizes the connection between heaven and earth. Th e three-part division of the house (the living room, the attic and the basement) also repeats the common understanding of the universe triad (heaven, earth and underworld).
