On October 18th, 2019, the European Vie Francigene Association (AEVF) unanimously approved the Via Francigena in southern Italy, from Rome to Santa Maria di Leuca. Encompassing about 900 km of history, traditions and locations, the “Via Francigena del Sud” crosses five Italian regions. The Francigena Way (Via Francigena) is a long international itinerary that was awarded recognition as a Culture Route of the Council of Europe. It starts in Canterbury (UK), touches 13 European regions and ends in Rome. An ancient track of this route is in Sicily (Southern Italy), and its name is Magna Via Francigena (Great Francigena Way). This track is a pilgrimage route that connects two ancient port cities, Palermo and Agrigento, passing through internal rural territories that now deal with the exodus of population from rural to urban areas. Abstract:
The chapter investigates the topic of happiness and quality of life in the slow-tourism context, with specific reference to the pilgrimage tourism phenomenon. The Camino de Santiago and the Via Francigena are analysed through explorative research with the aim of understanding the effects of pilgrimage on individuals' levels of well-being and its implications for peoples' lives. The results reveal several differences in motivations and benefits obtained according to the pilgrimage road undertaken, with a more existential connotation tied to personal happiness in the Camino de Santiago pilgrim group and a more experiential connotation tied to wellness in the Via Francigena pilgrim group. These findings provide new insights into contemporary pilgrimages in a comparative perspective.

Abstract:
The chapter offers a reflection on regional development and pilgrimage itineraries. After proceeding with the review of the geographical literature, the analysis will move to the study of the phenomenon on a regional scale with a focus on Apulia and on the current and potential effects of Apulian pilgrimages. In particular, the case study will focus on the “Via Francigena of Capitanata.” The Via Francigena is a historical path that from Canterbury led first to Rome, then to Jerusalem. Traveled in the Middle Ages by pilgrims and crusaders, it crossed the whole of Apulia, starting from the Dauni Mountains. By adopting a geo-economic approach, the chapter intends to analyze the religious and spiritual motivations, political and institutional conditioning, and above all the economic-territorial repercussions of a secular phenomenon but still of great relevance and equally important multiplicative potential.

This chapter considers Francesco di Bartolomeo Alfei’s dealings with the Trecerchi and outlines his role as mediator and scribe for the family in 1465 (alongside Sano di Pietro and others), following embellishment of a Trecerchi ‘palazeto’ by fellow artist Antonio di Simone. It considers a number of Trecerchi palaces inside the walls of Siena in an attempt to locate the site of the ‘palazeto’. It analyses the contemporary urban complex, drawing distinctions between the main thoroughfare of the Via di Città and the Via Pantaneto on the Via Francigena.

An Armenian religious community settled in Orvieto in the 13th century and founded the church and hospice of Santo Spirito, where they provided hospitality to pilgrims on the Via Francigena. Archaeological traces of their presence include a travertine gate with a trilingual inscription, reused in the church of San Domenico (Orvieto), the remains of the church of Santo Spirito, and art pieces removed from the latter. Contemporary Latin documents and an analysis of the historical context suggest that the Armenian presence was well-received by the lay and clerical authorities, and even held as prestigious.

Previous assessments of Francesco di Bartolomeo Alfei (including the aborted commission to fresco the chapel of the Fraternita di Santa Maria degli Angeli e Compagnia di San Francesco in Siena and disputed claims about the ‘Maestro dell’Osservanza’ and the altarpiece of the Birth of the Virgin in Asciano) provide the background to an analysis of the politics of his journeyman painting, applying the symbols of Sienese power in subject communes. This chapter outlines the artist’s early involvement in government affairs from the mid 1450s onwards; from service in Rigomagno to the east of the Via Francigena near the unsettled borderlands of the Val di Chiana, to Monte Orgiali in the south towards the Maremma and the old stronghold of the Aldobrandeschi.
