Abstract:
The Watermelon Woman (1996), Cheryl Dunye, is a hybrid movie that is between fiction and documentary model. The double performance goes from the search of a black actress of the silent cinema period to the daily life of the director / character. An association between form and content allows the representation of the character to be equated with the displacement of the cinematographic genres, making the film a queer performance, in which the story about the life of the watermelon woman and the reality of Cheryl merge, giving visibility to the woman black and lesbian.

Abstract:
AbstractGAVE syndrome (gastric antral vascular ectasia) is a rare cause of gastrointestinal bleeding. It affects mainly the elderly. The syndrome was named “watermelon stomach” because of its typical endoscopic appearance of “watermelon stripes” observed at the gastric antral level. We present the case of an 80-year-old female patient, under iron substitution therapy for an iron deficiency anemia previously diagnosed. The woman was admitted to our hospital for non-specific symptoms, severe asthenia and postural instability. The clinical examination noted pallor of skin and sclera, without hematemesis or melena. Paraclinical tests revealed severe hypochromic microcytic anemia and hyposideremia, with a positive fecal occult blood test. Because the patient was refractory to the iron therapy, presenting with severe anemia, which required blood transfusions, we suspected a diagnosis of acute hemorrhagic gastritis. In order to reveal the source of the hemorrhage, an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed, which described the typical appearance of prominent, tortuous, erythematous streaks traversing the antrum and converging toward the pylorus, creating the “watermelon stripes” pattern, with lesions that bleed easily during the biopsy process. In a different endoscopic session, the argon plasma coagulation treatment was applied, resulting in clinical and biological improvement.Gastric antral vascular ectasia is a rare medical condition, insufficiently recognized and poorly understood, which can be treated efficiently by endoscopic means, if it is early diagnosed. Although this condition tends to be underdiagnosed at the present time, doctors may exceed their limits by acquiring a high grade of clinical suspicion.

Plummer, Sarah E. "How is a Woman Like a Watermelon?: Advocating a Psychological and Comparative Examination of Brautigan's Novels." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32521.

Full text
Abstract:
â How is a Woman Like a Watermelonâ examines two of Richard Brautiganâ s novels, In Watermelon Sugar and An Unfortunate Woman, as they relate to each other in ways that offer a better understanding of each. This paper enriches an understanding of Brautiganâ s work by exploring the historical context of his writings, studying his style and presenting diverse interpretations in a mutually inclusive way that complements the multifaceted qualities of his writing. By studying Brautiganâ s novels in a comparative manner, the essential and distinctive principles that drive Brautiganâ s workâ his manipulation of genre, use of memory and a complex first person narrator as an author personaâ are better understood. Because of Brautiganâ s use of the first person, this study advocates an analytical psychological analysis aimed at discerning underlying emotion within apparent personal detachment, the use of projection as a defense mechanism, and the psychological associative value of words, images and memories. An inclusive and comparative study that foregrounds these psychological elements will ultimately allow for a more complete and subtle analysis of Brautiganâ s work.

Abstract:
In this essay I aim to examine how camp could be used as a method in the reading of camp as a theory. This will be followed by an analysis of how The Watermelon Woman (Cheryl Dunye, 1996) could be seen as an expression of camp. I am intending to do so by using camp as a method combined with queer phenomenology and theory about social abjection. By having a phenomenological base I hope to show how camp is contextual - and how its resistance is fluid. In my analysis I will look closer at the relationship between Dunye, the director, Cheryl, the protagonist - played by Dunye, and Fae - the actress who has been lost in the archives. Together, they show how camp becomes a method in the film itself, as a film, as well as a film within the film. Camp will be my method in the reading of The Watermelon Woman, claiming that the film as well uses camp as a method - both as an aesthetic expressions and as a (re)writer of history.

Abstract:
In Jacques Derrida’s Archive Fever (1995), the motif of the missing woman appears in the guise of Gradiva, a character from William Jensen’s novella (1903) of the same name. At once a ghostly image and a presence evoked by a few material traces, Gradiva motivates the construction of the archive and, for Derrida, its eventual destruction. Yet in omitting a key part of Jensen’s text, namely the flesh-and-blood woman Zoë, Derrida consigns the archive to a space of haunting. This Gradivan logic, where the body of the living woman is excluded from her chimerical image, adheres in several films that are pointedly about the film archive. Bill Morrison’s The Film of Her (1996) reproduces the melancholic terms of Derrida’s Gradivan theory, while Cheryl Dunye’s The Watermelon Woman (1996) and Radha May’s When the Towel Drops, Volume 1, Italy (2015) offer feminist critiques of the gendered materiality on which it is predicated.

Abstract:
This chapter considers how four films, Looking for Langston (directed by Isaac Julien, 1989), The Watermelon Woman (directed by Cheryl Dunye,1996), Brother to Brother (directed by Rodney Evans, 2005),and The Aggressives (directed by Daniel Peddle, 2005), involve related, but different organizations of time. While all of the films offer insights into the temporality of a present sense of political possibility, the first three films evince a desire for a usable past that might work in the service of the present, while The Aggressives organizes time idiosyncratically in a strategy that provides an opportunity to consider how queer temporality carries spatial implications that might anchor another orientation toward the past, present, and the future—one in which listening for “poetry from the future,” without insisting it be recognizable as such, is an ethical demand of and for our times.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a variegated depiction of female sexuality seen from their own point of view, beginning with Carollee Schneeman’s Meat Joy (1964). Woolf’s metaphors for the female sex and lesbian desire is brought to the scene in interracial encounters in She Must Be Seeing Things (Sheila McLaughlin 1987), The Watermelon Woman (Cheryl Dunye 1997) and Pariah (Dee Rees 2011). The stereotypical figure of the lustful and man-eating witch is reworked in The Love Witch (Anna Biller 2016) and Jennifer’s Body (Karen Kusama 2009). In Raw (Julia Ducournaou 2016) female sexuality is addressed in a ferocious and intense way. After the explicit poetics of horror of the films of the middle section, this chapter looks at three other films that have a more-implied horror embedded within their narration. In I’m Not a Witch (Rungano Nyoni 2017) witchcraft is seen from a totally different non-western perspective, whereas in In the Cut (Jane Campion 2003) we see a combination of poetry, sexuality and a different type of final girl. In the equally poetic Longing for the Rain (Lina Yang, 2013), a contemporary Beijing housewife makes love with a ghost that might not be so benign and slowly takes over her life.
