Abstract:

This thesis describes a project that utilizes honeypots to detect worms. A detailed description of existing worm detection techniques using honeypots is given, as well as a study of existing worm propagation models. Simulations using some of these worm propagation models are also conducted. Although the results of the simulations coincide with the collected data from the actual outbreak of a network worm, they also conclude that it is difficult to produce realistic results prior to a worm outbreak. Worms have caused significant destruction over the last few years. Network security elements such as firewalls, IDS, etc have been ineffective against worms. Some worms are so fast that a manual intervention is not possible. This brings in the need for a stronger security architecture which can automatically react to stop worm propagation. The method has to be signature independent so that it can stop new worms. In this thesis, an automated defense system (ADS) is developed to automate defense against worms and contain the worm to a level where manual intervention is possible. This is accompl

Worms are malicious programs that spread over the Internet without human intervention. Since worms generally spread faster than humans can respond, the only viable defence is to automate their detection. Network intrusion detection systems typically detect worms by examining packet or flow logs for known signatures. Not only does this approach mean that new worms cannot be detected until the corresponding signatures are created, but that mutations of known worms will remain undetected because each mutation will usually have a different signature. Based on the innervation pattern of lip papillae surrounding the mouth, the onychophoran brain has been interpreted as a circumoral ring, suggesting that this organization is an ancestral feature of Ecdysozoa. Thus they are widely used as gear-reduction mechanisms. Three types ofworm gear mechanisms, which are SG-71, ZE-type and ZK-type combinations, are investigated such that better understanding of their characteristics can be reached. The explicit f

碩士
國立清華大學
通訊工程研究所
92
A computer worm is a self-replicating and self-propagating program designed to spread through the network by exploiting security holes; moreover, with its malicious behaviors, it has caused much inconvenience to computer users. We believe that detection is the first step to fight against worms. In this thesis we provide some guidance for sensor placement in worm detection. Because of the popularity for peer-to-peer systems, it is conceivable that worms may be created to fail such systems. The question then is: given a network with a special topology, how can on
