Abstract:
This thesis aims at investigating how infancy and Early Childhood Education fit in Education and Health Policymaking in Brazil, from 1950 to 1960, the so-called period of desenvolvimentismo This historical research explores theoretical and methodological contributions, mainly from cultural history. Based on the examination of records and files of that period of time, some issues are going to be dealt with, such as: the preschool as a necessary evil; public and private initiatives that gave origin to educational policies for small children; Early Childhood Education as working women´s children right, women´s right to education; the role of the State in educational initiatives (campaigns, programs and projects); and the creation of public organs and proposals destined to children´s education in Brazil. This research highlights the existing tensions in the years 1950/1960, as far as children and their education outside home and family are concerned, which are: mother´s access to work versus child´s development; preschool education conceived as a preparatory stage for primary school versus an educational stage with an end in itself; children`s education as a duty of the State versus a duty owed to the family and society; volunteering (benevolent interest) needed in early childhood care and protection programs versus professionalism (educators` formation); the motherly educator versus the professional educator; the preschool institution seen as a substitute for home care versus the space for children´s development; child-centered educational process in preschools and kindergarten versus the idea that the teacher or educator is at the center of this process.<br>Cette thèse a pour objet d´étudier la place de l´enfant et de l´éducation de l´enfant dans les politiques d´éducation et de santé élaborées pendant la période dite du desenvolvimentismo au Brésil (1950-1960).

Rocquin, Baudry. "The British sociological tradition in the interwar years (1920-1940)." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2017. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:d07b2e90-95be-41e4-9856-bb65b215b792.

Abstract:
This thesis argues that there was a strong tradition of British sociological thought that developed in the interwar years (1920-1940) at the LSE but also outside universities under the guise of 'public sociology', 'social surveys' and 'the sociological imagination'. Sociology was seen here specifically as a democratic, reflexive discipline supposed to entail change by individuals and fostered by philanthropy as opposed to the French, academic and ex cathedra approach of collective institutions fostered by the State. It was especially under the heading of 'new anthropology' that Radcliffe-Brown and Malinowski developed their own version of it, and social anthropology is still remembered today as the 'real', most successful school of British sociology, paradoxically. Both strands represent the British sociological tradition at its best and the thesis concludes that despite two different names (Durkheim's sociologie and Malinowski's 'modern anthropology') and contexts (that of a Republic versus that of an Empire), both sciences shared a similar humanistic concern for European modernity and for the preservation of societies. This uncovers the world-enriching specificities of Britain to world sociology (the birth of a public sociology, the tradition of the social survey and the development of the sociological imagination) that only became apparent after WWII. This thesis is thus an original contribution to the field which sheds a brand new light on an old problem thanks to 1) a comparative approach between Britain and France which has never been attempted before 2) taking into account not only the institutional history but also the intellectual history and sociological ideas 3) drawing on previously unused material such as book reviews from the journal l'Ann&eacute;e sociologique and interwar textbooks to study the reception of British sociology in France 4) finding the contours of its specific national tradition 5) extending our knowledge of the discipline in the interwar years.

Aylett, P. J. "Thirty years of reform : House of Commons Select Committees, 1960-1990." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2016. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/18377.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the development of investigatory select committees of the House of Commons during the twentieth century, with a particular emphasis on the period between 1960 and 1990. Synthesising existing analysis as well as presenting new evidence, it describes the early origins of such committees as an integral part of the work of the House, and then considers the House’s apparent loss of interest in select committees between 1920 and 1960. The thesis next discusses the reasons behind the introduction of new select committees in the mid-1960s, and traces further changes to committees during the 1970s. These developments are set in the political context of the period, and in particular the growth of backbench dissent in both major parties during the 1970s. The thesis then analyses the process by which departmentally-related select committees came to be established in 1979. Finally it assesses the quantitative and qualitative evidence about the activity and impact of the new departmental select committees in their first decade up to 1990, relating them closely to the political environment created by the government of Margaret Thatcher.

Adamson, Ashley Jayne. "Nutrient intakes (1990 compared with 1980) and place of purchase of foods (1990) by 11 to 12-year old Northumbrian children." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/401.

Full text
Abstract:
There are few data from repeated cross-sectional studies to indicate the changes in dietary intake in the UK, yet this information is valuable in assessing the impact of dietary-related health education. One of the least investigated aspects of food habits in Britain, particularly for children, is food consumption outside the home. This project investigated the change in dietary intake of 11 to 12-year old children 1980 to 1990, and the place of purchase of food in 1990. In 1990, three-hundred and seventy-nine 11 to 12-year old children completed two 3-day dietary records. Each child was interviewed by one dietitian to verify and enlarge upon the information recorded. These children attended the same seven middle schools in south Northumberland as 405 children, of the same age, who had recorded their food intake using the same method in 1980. In addition, the children in 1990 were questioned on the place of purchase of the foods recorded. It was found that: • Energy intake by boys (but not girls) had fallen. The per cent of energy derived from fat and total sugars was unchanged at about 40 and 22 per cent, respectively. In 1990, 17 per cent of energy was derived from non-milk extrinsic sugars. • Calcium intake by girls was unchanged but had fallen in boys. Iron, vitamin C and unavailable carbohydrate intakes had increased for both boys and girls and the nutrient density of the diet improved for these nutrients in all sex and social groups. In 1990, 90 per cent of girls and 56 per cent of boys had iron intakes below the Reference Nutrient Intake (RNI) and 66 per cent of girls and 83 per cent of boys had calcium intakes below the RNI. • A social trend, evident in 1980, persisted in 1990 with children from low social class groups consuming the poorest quality of diet. • Food 'purchased' outside the home contributed approximately 31 per cent of the total energy intake, although there was significant variation in the nutrient quality of the food obtained at each place of purchase. It is concluded that whilst there had been improvements in some aspects of the diet, the mean dietary intake of the children in 1990 fell short of current dietary recommendations, and that social inequalities persisted.

Hallam, Michael Neil. "Avant-garde realism : James Hanley, Patrick Hamilton and the lost years of the 1940s." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2011. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/7573/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the dynamic relationship between realism and experimentalism in the 1940s and mid-century fiction of James Hanley and Patrick Hamilton. It is argued that the work of both writers during this period, although it might utilise realist forms and techniques, is not characterised by reversion to a traditional and outmoded model of novel writing that predates modernism, but rather, is engaged in a productive and sometimes tense dialogue with the gestures, manners and experiments of the avant-garde. In so doing, Hanley and Hamilton are read as key exemplars of a varied and adventurous literary moment that has been frequently overlooked within the broad narrative of twentieth century British fiction. It is argued that these works complicate the vocabulary of literary realism by suggesting the novel as a hybrid form: an aesthetic which privileges fidelity to a contemporary ―real‖, especially the conditions of wartime and post-war and the shifting configurations of social and economic relations, even as it simultaneously projects a deep estrangement or satirical detachment from a sense of unified reality. Whilst registering the manifest differences between the two writers, the thesis explores their fiction‘s varying reactions towards and absorption of avant-garde idioms, such as the surrealist and expressionist, and analyses the affective qualities of that ―heightening‖ of language in the construction of their realist narratives. All the novels discussed, in a series of close readings, possess a stylistic or tonal singularity that tangibly frames their narratives, a process of divergence that contests and reconceptualises the concept and aims of literary realism. In historicising this phase of literary change, the thesis draws on the work of various cultural theorists and historians and elaborates the interpretive framework in which the literary 40s and the fiction of Hanley and Hamilton can be recast.

For this brief consideration of the present state of Baltic musicology, I have chosen to focus upon two problems, both equally loaded and, in fact, interrelated. The first: How has Baltic musicology reflected upon the history of the dramatic events of the twentieth century, namely, World War II and the ensuing occupations? And secondly: Has Baltic musicology found ways and means of disclosing the semantics of the music created in these critical periods of the two great catastrophes, the fascist and communist dictatorships?

Abstract:
The Chicago Area Transportation Study (CATS) set the standard for urban transportation planning during its original 1955-61 genesis years. This study examined CATS' planning methodology during these years and its 1962 regional transportation plan for the Chicago metropolis which had a planning target year of 1980. The subject focus of this study was on expressway planning while the temporal focus was from the late 1950's to circa 1980. The findings of this study revealed four key reasons why CATS' 1962 expressway plan was largely never implemented. These reasons include the inconsistency of some of CATS' 1962 projections for 1980 versus actual 1980 data, the apolitical orientation of CATS, increased urban environmentalism, and rising expressway infrastructure costs. Yet despite the lack of plan implementation, the literature supports the conclusion that CATS did set the standard, at least in its methodology or planning approach.<br>Department of Urban Planning

Abstract:
Fokus i läromedel på 2000-talet låg på att skildra syftet med skapelseberättelserna mer än dess innehåll.<br>In this essay, I examine how the first two creation stories in the Bible and creation stories of the Babylonian and Canaanean mythology are portrayed in the teaching materials in the 1960s, 1990s and 2000s. The purpose of the study was to investigate if the creation stories in Genesis are mentioned in the school textbooks and if they are compared with earlier creation stories in the Near East. The study also aimed to see whether there have been changes in the portrayal over the decades. In my background, I will first present an overview of the social and religious context in which the people of the contemporary Near East lived in. As this is the geographical area of origin for the creation stories in the Enuma Elish, the Canaanean mythology and Genesis, the purpose of my background presentation is to make it easier to understand how they may have influenced each other. The method I chose is a comparative qualitative analysis of three teaching materials from the 1960s, three from the 1990s and three from the 2000s. The result is then presented in accordance with the systematizing research method I have used. The purpose of systematizing the survey was to get a clear overview of possible changes, but also as an easy way to process the results. The study results showed that the study materials in the 1960s had clearer depiction and more historical content, while in the 1990s the biblical creation are more described like a fairy tale, with few texts about the historical content. The focus of the study materials in the 2000s was on portraying the purpose of the creation stories over the content.

Abstract:
This thesis on the Swedish voluntary women’s defence organisation Riksförbundet Sveriges lottakårer (SLK), studies how the board and the members of SLK discussed the problems and the meaning of voluntary defence work during the 1960s and 1970s. Furthermore the thesis aims to engage with previous research and give an explanation to why people may be interested in voluntary defence. Views varied greatly within SLK: some meant that the voluntary grounds of participation gave a sense of elite status to the organisation; however others saw voluntary work as untenable, since more women at the time had both work and family obligations. Another issue was professionalisation versus socialisation. While some members wanted to see a centralisation and professionalisation of the organisation, others found it more important to safeguard the social functions and independence of the local corps unit. The results suggest that gender structures as well as individual agency create multiple reasons and meanings behind voluntary defence work.

Abstract:
The major purpose of this study is to examine the mayoral years of Leonidas A. Guthrie, from 1905 to 1910. Guthrie (1875-1964), a Muncie, Indiana lawyer, reform leader, and philanthropist, served as mayor during a period when Muncie began to evolve into a modern city. His administration saw a number of changes in Muncie as the city entered the twentieth century, including the first brick streets and the widespread installation of electric street lights. In spite of these advancements, Guthrie, who kept exhaustive notes on every facet of his life, left no chronicle of his mayoral years amidst the large collection of his personal papers housed at Special Collections at Ball State University.Further research discovered that Guthrie's term was marred by controversy surrounding the city fire department and the Great Goddard Fire of 1907, the Interurban Strike of 1908, and the battle between the "wet" and "dry" elements which eventually led to the passage of the local option law and a "dry" vote for Delaware County. Therefore, this dissertation is a, chronological account of Guthrie's administration and an examination of the controversies and political turmoil surrounding Guthrie's mayoral years.<br>Department of History

Full text
Abstract:
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited<br>Improvisational budgeting represents an interruption to the normal budgeting process, resulting in costly delays to the defense Planning Programming and Budgeting Process (PPBS). A normal congressional budget process was characterized by Congress' ability to follow established procedures, complete their budget in a timely manner and fulfill their expected roles for applying incremental adjustments to the budget. The latent pro-spending bias and intrinsic political behavior within the budgetary process, in conjunction with a U.S. economy bitten by stagflation in the 1970's, was a recipe for the creation of enormous debt and political breakdowns in the 1980's. The result of these factors was a breakdown of the normal budgeting process, subsequently circumvented by improvisational budgeting. Ramifications include continuing resolution appropriations, appropriations passed before authorizations, delayed bills or even government shutdowns. These ramifications impact DoD's ability to issue accurate Budget Estimate Submissions during budget formulation, increasing the level of uncertainty in the PPBS process. This can negatively impact defense programs requiring accurate forecasting to remain executable. It is important to further explore the decade of the 1990's to ascertain whether harmony could be restored in a budgetary process defined by a surplus rather than the deficit spending-driven improvisational budgeting of the 1980's.

Abstract:
CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior<br>The subject of the present study is the Normal School of Cearà (Brazil), as the focal point in the framework of educational politics in this State, between 1930 and 1950, a period characterized by the outbreak of great debates around the current educational reforms. In this sense, it supports the thesis that the Normal School of that period served as the arena for political quarrels and disputes, particularly, at a local level, more so than a place for pedagogical debates. It is stated, furthermore, that the Normal School begins to loose its prestige and centrality around the years 1950. The study intended to understand the historical process of teacher preparation in the context of the Normal School in the above mentioned period. The daily newspaper was selected as the main tool of data collecting, along with official documents and bibliographical reviews focusing upon the subject. The study was based upon the theoretical perspective represented by the New History approach associated to the comprehensive and historical research methods. Categories such as modernity, intellectual, conservativeness, as well as the emergence of a Brazilian curriculum under the influence of foreign studies were also taken into account in the data analysis process. The study results confirm that within the meanders of the consolidation of a teacher preparation project, the Normal School played an essential role in the field of contentions involving political groups and factions, which, if not ideologically divergent or contradictory, positioned themselves at opposed sides on the grounds of the political power. And, yet, the teacher preparation experience in the State of Cearà followed the same path as did the majority of Brazilian Normal Schools, connecting themselves to the most advanced pedagogical studies produced so far in the world, and for this accomplishment, the role of the native intellectuals was, in truth, outstanding. Moreover, it should be stressed that the Normal School as an institution immersed in the realm of a certain historical time, served the needs of that time. For, if in the years 1920, it should be put to use as a laboratory of new pedagogical ideas, in the years 1930, at least in a formal sense, it was to be held accountable for the formation of the new man required by a society, which was, at the same time, modern and conservative<br>O presente trabalho tem como objeto de estudo a Escola Normal do Cearà como ponto de partida para o desencadear da polÃtica educacional cearense, palco de onde se encenaram grandes polÃmicas em torno das reformas educacionais, no perÃodo de 1930 a 1950.

Abstract:
The early years of the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre were dominated by its founder, James Bridie, and by the influence which his legacy exerted over those who worked there in the time immediately following his death. This period can be said to last from the Theatre's opening (1943) until the arrival of Peter Duguid, the first director not immediately influenced by Bridie's aims and objects (1957). From 1969 until the present day, Giles Havergal and his associates have been in charge, and they have created, in its international-style motivation, something unique in British theatre, famous outside these shores, but totally at variance with the founder's aspirations. These two eras bear their own recognisable stamps, but in between stretch the 'middle years' - twelve seasons parcelled out among seven directors, an extraordinary series of lofty peaks and corresponding valleys, but comprising, in spite of - or because of - their diversity, a remarkable sum total of achievement. And yet thi s is the period when - many believe - nothing really happened. Why were these years so fragmented? Three of the directorships lasted for one season only, and the others had individual styles of their own: Duguid was in sympathy with American plays, Callum Mill with European; Michael Meacham and Michael Blakemore were, on the whole, more English orientated, and the work of Iain Cuthbertson probably came nearer than anyone's, in content, to the Citizens' of James Bridie's vision. Every individual regime of these twelve seasons had its glories, and it is perhaps, the series of 'new beginnings' which give the 'middle years' their lasting impact. Relationships between Director and Theatre Board were frequently difficult; both were true to their principles, but these were times when the whole moral and social climate of Britain, its type of 'media appreciation', were in flux. The ideas of 1943 were no longer valid twenty years later and the problems of adjustment between 1957 and 1969 came close, in the end, to wrecking the whole enterprise. It is only now, with the dust of battle cleared away, that it is possible to see the era in the importance of its true perspective.

Abstract:
This study is an historical examination of the contributions made by Dr. Henry H. Proctor, the first African American pastor of the First Congregational Church in Atlanta, Georgia from 1894 to 1920. The study emphasizes Dr. Proctor's multifaceted career as pastor of First Congregational Church, as community developer, church administrator, church builder, army chaplain, civil rights activist, educator, and author of religious publications. Preliminary chapters examine Proctor's early life and development in the backwoods of Tennessee, his early education, and his conversion to the ministry. Separate chapters are devoted to his contributions, within a hostile southern society, as an instrument cultivating harmony between the races in Atlanta. Attention is given to his role as a model for Black leadership for his church and its surrounding community. The focus, however, is on his major achievements as a missionary to the South, community builder in Atlanta, and church administrator. His flexibility on racial and educational issues; impressive oratory; energetic advocacy of civil rights; discreet negotiations demeanor; and charismatic appeals to African Americans and whites; his sensitivities to the social, spiritual, and cultural needs of African Americans In Atlanta won him a considerable following within the city of Atlanta and the world as well. His successes are analyzed in relation to his impact on the Atlanta community and African Americans throughout the nation. The effects of his growing power within the Congregational Church bring to light some interesting parallels between his mission to the South and his missionary work throughout the nation. This study suggests that Proctor played a central role in sustaining the efforts of the institutional church in Atlanta. His church became the cornerstone of social and spiritual development for African Americans in Atlanta. His legacy spanned some twenty-five years and embraced a philosophy that was geared to solving the great racial problems in the South.

Abstract:
This thesis draws on a wealth of Parisian dailies and little magazines as well as institutional and literary archives in France, England, and America to reconstruct the intellectual milieu ofT. S. Eliot's student year in France (1910-11). It argues that the French cultural controversies he witnessed that year significantly changed his mind on literary, artistic, spiritual, and political matters. In addition to bringing much needed context to figures already acknowledged as central to Eliot's intellectual development-including Henri Bergson and Charles Maurras-this dissertation offers the first account of his studies at the Sorbonne and of his little-known visit to Henri Matisse's art studio. It makes the case that Eliot left France having reached a remarkable poetic maturity and with many of his critical formulations in place. It contends, moreover, that throughout his life, with each phase of his intellectual development, convictions of literary theorists, philosophers, and cultural commentators from his student-year abroad provided him with significant points of departure. In restoring the framework through which he saw the main figures of his transformative year in France, this dissertation refocuses existing views of Eliot.

Serrano, Dafne Isaac. "Effect of Evapotranspiration Rate on Almond Yield in California." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2018. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1955.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 2011, California has been under drought conditions. These conditions have not only affected water availability for farmers, but also production. California’s second most valuable crop, almonds, has been affected by drought conditions. This study used three models (Model 1-3) to describe almond yield variability from year to year and almond yield variability within a year in Kern County, CA. The study evaluated 185 almond farms that were classified in three locations (east side, west side and north west side). The years of the study were 2011 (wet year) and 2013-2015 (drought condition years). Model 1 determined a functional regression between almond yield and annual evapotranspiration during the 4 years of the study. The R2was 7.9%, meaning low association between both variables and high unexplained variability (92.1%). Model 2 evaluated year to year variation. A regression function between almond yield and annual evapotranspiration after adjusting for location, precipitation, chilling hours and year was made. The R2of this model 62.6%, and all the variables used had a p2was higher than Model 1; however, there was high unexplained variability (47.4%). Model 3 evaluated within-year variation. A regression function between almond yield and annual evapotranspiration after adjusting for tree age and location (east, west and northwest side) was made for each year (2011 and 2013 -2015). Coefficient of variation of evapotranspiration and soil available water storage were analyzed as additional variables in Model 3; however, they were not introduced in Model 3 due to the low increase in R2 in each year (2 of Model 3 for each year were, 60.4%, 49.7%, 53.8% and 53.2% for the years 2011, 2013-2015, respectively. Model 3 also had high unexplained almond yield variability in each year (39.6%-50.3%). This high unexplained variability leads to introduce additional variables to the functional regression model for further studies. Identifying these additional variables and having a functional regression model with high R2 would lead to understand howlow evapotranspiration could potentially lead to a positive response on yield in drought conditions; thus, making farmers improve water use efficiency and hence, lowering production cost. However, the high unexplained variability clearly indicates that evapotranspiration is only one of many factors that influence yield. If improved yield is an important outcome, future studies must examine large- scale almond-producing farms with multiple agricultural system variables.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Education))--Peninsula Technikon, Cape Town, 2003<br>Using a case study approach, this thesis describes the listening practices of tirst year students at a technikon in the Western Cape. The research was conducted over a period of two years, from 2002 - 2003. Research data are gleaned from an analysis and interpretation ofresponses from several ethnographic tools: questionnaires (completed by lecturers and students), notes on class observations, oral interviews and audio-visual samples ofstudents' gestures and actions in class. Oral and written lecture recall assessments are analysed and interpreted with a view to describing students' listening practices. Six first year students, whose home languages are Xhosa and Afrikaans, are selected for research. The impact oftheir listening and learning through the medium ofEnglish is considered, as well as the influence ofchange in a learning culture, socio-cultural and socio-economic factors. Their life stories are analysed in depth to consider how factors in their lives influence their listening in class. Pairs ofselected students are compared to try to identify the qualities ofeffective listeners. The impact oflistening on these students' academic performance is examined and the role ofeducators as facilitators is considered. It is concluded that both students and staffhave a role to play in improving students' listening and English proficiency in order to promote academic success.

Bron, Eleanor Janet. "This is Africa's year : MacMillan and African independence in white South African newspapers 1960." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/53480.

Full text
Abstract:
British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan s wind of change speech to both houses of the South African Union parliament acknowledged already at the beginning of 1960 what the rest of Africa year would look like. The wind of black nationalism that he was describing stood in stark contrast with the suppression of black nationalism in South Africa by the National Party apartheid government. His speech was rather predictive since he had toured parts of the African continent and was aware of the planned independence of several African countries by the time he delivered the wind of change statement. This study seeks to explore how 1960, Africa year , was portrayed in selected white South African newspapers. The study follows Macmillan s trip through Africa and reflects on the newspaper portrayal of these events in Ghana, Nigeria, the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland and finally the Union of South Africa. Furthermore the analysis considers how the newspapers responded to and portrayed the momentous speech. The newspaper reporting on the coming of independence to African countries during the year 1960 is also examined. A layered model to evaluate the use of newspapers as a historical source was devised. According to this, a combination of quantitative and qualitative content analysis was applied to interpret how the newspapers portrayed African independence and responded to Macmillan s tour. The six newspapers, Die Transvaler, Die Vaderland, Die Burger, The Star, Rand Daily Mail and the Sunday Times, were selected as being representative of the white minority English and Afrikaans press. Through this analysis, deductions regarding the nature of the white press industry are made and some insights regarding the white minority South African zeitgeist are considered.<br>Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2015.<br>Historical and Heritage Studies<br>MA<br>Unrestricted

A cette fin, on utilise un modèle d’analyse géométrique des données (ACP) et des méthodes géostatistiques et de géographie électorale<br>How does the electoral scene looks in Romania after the first 18 years of democracy? How did the Romanians vote at the first six free elections? The purpose of this study is, first, to measure the degree of stabilisation of the party system using four classic indicators: the electoral fragmentation, volatility, the polarisation and the level of abstention. Then, using ecological regression models, we analyse the social and contextual determinants of turnout in Romania based on aggregated data at the commune level. What are the variables that have the greatest influence on abstention? The statistical model includes demographic variables (age, education, ethnic fragmentation, urbanisation level) and systemic and contextual variables (level of turnout at previous elections, local electoral polarisation and fractionalisation, vote share of the winner and looser parties at the previous elections). Ecological inference analyses are used to support the results. Finally, we determine the major axes of social divisions and their electoral alignments. To this end, we use a model of geometric data analysis (PCA), geostatistical methods and electoral geography

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to analyse the economic development of Czechoslovakia during the Fourth Five-Year Plan (1966-1970) taking into account political development concerning mainly the formation of the second economic reform in Czechoslovakia. The theoretical section of the thesis deals with the political and the economic situation in Czechoslovakia between 1947-1965. It also looks into the characteristics of mechanisms of the functioning of the Czechoslovak economy. The analytical section deals with Šik´s Reform including its most important economic documents. It analyses the Fourth Five-Year Plan focussing on the most significant indicators of the national economy - national income, investments, industry, agriculture and forestry, transport and communications, water management, international trade, construction industry, standards of living, research and development. Despite the continuation of Šik´s Reform which had little influence on changing the economic progress, and despite the political tensions culminating in August 1968, the economic development during the Fourth Five-Year Plan can be regarded as quite successful.

Abstract:
This study examines Mark Twain's use of the spoken word in the last decade of his life. It includes Twain's informal readings, his image manipulation and control, his rhetorical speaking, his methods of speech preparation, and his dictation of the autobiography. Twain's use of oral interpretation is examined demonstrating the influence of the Reading Tour of 1884-1885. He read informally for personal delight and to edit his works. A large part of the dissertation is devoted to the long history of the Twain persona. Particularly does this study focus on Twain's rhetorical persona and the means by which he attempted to maintain the historical Mark Twain while expanding his role to that of political activist. Using a Burkean perspective, Twain's anti-imperialist rhetoric is analyzed. His private philosophy dictated the use of two ratios. Though he did not successfully defeat the imperialists, he was effective in rallying and unifying the anti-imperialist forces. The final portion of this work investigates Twain's participation in the effective campaign to dethrone Richard Croker and Tammany Hall. Attention is also given to Twain's seventieth birthday speech, and his lecture-like dictation of his autobiography. This dissertation concludes that in his final years Twain found happiness in the spoken word, that mode of communication on which he built his career.

Abstract:
This thesis traces the historical evolution of one of the early responses to youth crime and violence -- public school police. In addition, this thesis addresses the lack of information about the creation and implementation of a public school police force, specifically the Portland Public School Police and School District No. 1, during its formative years, 1937 to 1953. Finally, the thesis intends to address two principal questions: A) Why did the Portland Board of Education find it necessary to create their own police agency? While one opinion suggests that there was a real need for school police due to the escalating crime raking place within the school district, the other opinion suggests that the school police were created mostly for underlying political reasons rather than general public safety. B) What were the principal functions of the School Police? The initial function of the Portland Public School Police was to protect school property and reduce the monetary loss incurred by the school district. However, after 1941, when large number; of immigrants came to Portland with their school-age children, the Portland Public School Police expanded their function from property protection and reduction of monetary loss to include crime repression and protection.

Abstract:
The years i 920-22 constituted a period of unprecedented conflct and political change in Ireland. It began with the onset of the most brutal phase of the War ofIndependence and culminated in the effective miltary defeat of the Republican IRA in the Civil War. Occurring alongside these dramatic changes in the south and west of Ireland was a far more fundamental conflict in the north-east; a period of brutal sectarian violence which marked the early years of partition and the establishment of Northern Ireland. Almost uniquely the IRA in the six counties were involved in every one of these conflcts and yet it can be argued was on the fringes of all of them. The period i 920-22 saw the evolution of the organisation from a peripheral curiosity during the War of independence to an idealistic symbol for those wishing to resolve the fundamental divisions within the Sinn Fein movement which developed in the first six months of i 922. The story of the Northern IRA's collapse in the autumn of that year demonstrated dramatically the true nature of the organisation and how it was their relationship to the various protagonists in these conflcts, rather than their unceasing but fruitless war against partition, that defined its contribution to the Irish revolution.

Abstract:
The AIDS crisis was a major turning point of contemporary history. This work, which begins with the start of the epidemic and ends with the medicinal revolution that was triple therapy, at the end of the 1990's, focuses on the impact of AIDS on - and in the works - of American and European artists. These artists have rarely been considered together through the lens of the virus, and yet Cindy Sherman, Derek Jarman, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jeff Kaons, Gilbert &amp; George, Jenny Holzer, Michel Journiac and David Wojnarowicz - they are ail seized by same need to represent this crisis, at a time when no representation could truly be unaffected. In these works of arts, the undercurrents of western societies - starting with the bleakest - could be made current. These images could act as a memorial, like an emblem of resistance to that which would oppose them, and as beacon of indomitable will to never give up, and to try and find a way out of a deadlock. Centred on four main parts (« The Spirit of Catastrophe» ; « Bodies of Sickness »; « Frustrated Violence » ; « Community Spirit »), which each correspond to a window into the aids crisis, four proposals are put forward in order to comprehend the artistic output of the period. Art in AIDS puts forward the possibility that the works produced at the time of the disease are as much an integral part of the history of the disease than they are a consequence of it

We chose life histories as a qualitative research, with the use of in-depth and open interviews and documentary analysis. We explain the search and selection process, the profiles of the participants and the process of construction of the analysis themes. The themes - related to the teaching knowledge that emerged from the extracurricular, school, training and professional trajectories of teachers - also settled on the data themselves and made real the possibility of apprehending several stories in the same history of life. In order to develop the aforementioned objective, themes and data analysis, we will discuss life histories, teacher knowledge and identity, teaching learning, reflection possibilities based on life histories and the context of formation - based on a curricular model "traditional-sports" - of teachers in Santo André and Bauru and of professional performance in several schools of public and private education networks in the State of São Paulo. The influence of some tendencies and the technization of Physical Education, the dependence between the reminiscences of the different trajectories of the teachers and the family, social, scholastic, religious and professional relations of each one of them and the focus in the first moment of the History of Physical Education in the State of São Paulo, where his classes were taught by a specialist teacher in the initial years, were also, among others, the object of these dialogues. We have identified in the teachers' stories knowledge from their own trajectories, we have understood the influences of the various moments and contexts of formation and work they have lived in the construction of their knowledge, we have established relationships between these knowledge, the formation received and the personal aspects of the teachers , and between training, the purposes of teaching Physical Education in the 1980s and 1990s and the characteristics of the students of the early years. The identified elements - with consideration for the time and space of training and professional performance of the participants - evidenced the process of building their knowledge throughout their life and profession trajectories, indicated successes and difficulties in their actions and contributed to reflect on the guidelines that we systematize for the initial training courses in Physical Education and, therefore, for the public policies of teacher training. As final considerations, we affirm that the life histories of the teachers indicated elements that contribute to reflect on the professional practice of teaching in Physical Education in the initial years, through the purposes of teaching, the characteristics of the students and the training gaps. These elements should therefore be considered and guaranteed in teacher training in order to meet the demands of the profession and to stimulate new studies based on this type of approach, on successful trajectories and teachers.<br>Com base nas narrativas orais de Antônio Carlos, Romilda Augusta e Dinalva Aparecida, professores de Educação Física aposentados, analisamos, nesta pesquisa de Doutorado, suas histórias de vida na construção dos saberes docentes no contexto dos anos iniciais do Ensino Fundamental da rede de ensino estadual paulista nas décadas de 1980 e 1990.
