Abstract:
Girls’ magazines play an important role in the maintenance of gender perceptions and the creation of gender by young girls. Due to a recent resurgence within public discussion and mediated content of feminist, postfeminist, and antifeminist repertoires, centered on what femininity entails, young girls are growing up in an environment in which conflicting messages are communicated about their gender. To assess, which shared norms and values related to gender are articulated in girl culture and to what extent these post/anti/feminist repertoires are prevalent in the conceptualization of girlhood, it is important to analyze magazines as vehicles of this culture. The current study analyzes if and how contemporary postfeminist thought is articulated in popular girl’s magazines. To reach this goal, we conducted a thematic analysis of three popular Dutch teenage girls’ magazines (N = 27, from 2018), <em>Fashionchick</em>, <em>Cosmogirl</em>, and <em>Girlz</em>. The results revealed that the magazines incorporate feminist, antifeminist, and as a result, postfeminist discourse in their content. The themes in which these repertoires are articulated are centered around: the body, sex, male–female relationships, female empowerment, and self-reflexivity. The magazines function as a source of gender socialization for teenage girls, where among other gendered messages a large palette of postfeminist themes are part of the magazines’ articulation of what it means to be a girl in contemporary society.

Abstract:
In French cinema, representations of girls have often been associated with films made by women, as demonstrated by Carrie Tarr with Brigitte Rollet (2001). They claim that the young girl is the major cinematographic topic for a woman’s first film, and names, such as Céline Sciamma in the late 2000s, Diane Kurys and Catherine Breillat in the 1970s, substantiate this position. However, Breillat’s A Real Young Girl was different, as it attracted critics’ acerbic reception and was subsequently banned for its open depiction of a young girl’s sexual experiences. It is argued that Breillat’s images of the young girl’s sexual initiation in the 1970s brings to the fore the significance of the idea of authenticity in relation to sex and cinema. Examining the representation of the ‘real young girl’ highlights the ideas of reflexivity and creativity attached to the existentialist notion of authenticity. This article aims to show that the young girl stands as a metaphor for Breillat’s auteurist approach to challenging existing filmic conventions.

Abstract:
The thesis is an exploration of how young women are embedded within and (re)construct discourses of gendered identity within consumerist/capitalist culture, in relation to popular music. Theoretical analysis is juxtaposed throughout with interviews I conducted with 46 young women aged between 11 and 18 years old which took place in schools and a youth centre in Manchester and Salford. The importance placed on the interviews reflects my attempt to privilege young women as the primary focus of the research. The interviews were a means of situating young women's discursive engagement with popular culture in relation to gender identities. The main body of the thesis begins with an exploration of how young women are situated in relation to discourses of social class, ethnicity and sexuality, including how social class connects with young women's lives in relation to popular culture, how to theorise blackness and whiteness, and ways of opening up discussions of both heterosexuality and homosexuality. I then widen the remit of the thesis, by considering where the young women I interviewed are situated in relation to discourses of femininity, utilising theories of the 'male gaze', and of representations of the feminine in popular culture. How these young women's lives relate to feminisms, and feminist work, particularly in relation to structural inequalities, equal rights and sexual behaviour, are then investigated. Finally, the thesis analyses the extent to which the young women's talk in the interviews constructs themselves and others as individual consumers, and examines how this may impact on young women's lives. The thesis concludes how young women's accounts are embedded in a discourse of individualism. Societal structures which help to construct or maintain gendered, racial or sexual inequalities are often ignored in the young women's talk, since the individual as consumer is situated at the centre of their talk. Forms of feminism which attempt to explore inequalities beyond those of 'equal rights' then fail to impact on the young women as an audience. The young women's talk demonstrates that inequalities continue to exist in their lives, and yet popular culture does little to provide solutions or even acknowledgement of these inequalities. I suggest that since the analysis of the thesis has indicated that available feminisms have often failed to engage with young women in meaningful ways, in the future feminists need to highlight ways of challenging inequalities which young women encounter in their day-to-day lives.

Abstract:
In this paper I undertake an investigation of the meaning of sexual difference for Tiqqun’s theory of the Young Girl, which describes a commodified subjectivity in the neoliberal age. Tiqqun’s claim, that Young Girl is not to be understood as a gendered concept but rather as a détournement of the capitalist girl archetype, is put in relation to Jennifer Boyds development of their theory. According to Boyd’s interpretation of Young Girl as an embodied, gendered subjectivity, she can resist the control of the Empire by transforming from non-agency to pure agency, the latter being the state Boyd coins Strange Girl. In order to understand the radical notions that seem to follow from interpreting Young Girl in terms of gendered subjectivity, I apply Paul B. Preciado’s theory of techno-gender in the pharmacopornographic era to Tiqqun and Boyd respectively. Preciado’s theory offers a way of addressing Young Girl as a specific embodied subject and holder of a potentia gaudendi, an orgasmic potential that is either exploiting or being exploited depending on the bearers techno-gender. To conclude, this essay offers up a re-reading of Young Girl as being the exploited techno femininity that transform, via molecular gender and sex-hacking, into Strange Girl and orgasmic agency. Thereby she performs an actual, and not symbolical, resistance against the biopower performed by the Empire.

Abstract:
This photographic documentary seeks to record the transition from teenager into adulthood of twelve girls living in Melbourne, Australia between 2002 and 2008. Throughout the process of the project the artist has sought to challenge the assumption that reaching adulthood can be defined by achieving certain milestones in society, and that the transition period is as much about personal self-realisation on the part of the individual, as it is about measurements set by society. The photographic work is accompanied by text in the form of quotes taken from audio interviews conducted throughout the documentation process. This paper compares the ideas set by society about the process of becoming an adult and the real life events that triggered this transition period in this particular group of girls.

Denna uppsats är en kvalitativ studie av de två största professionella bloggarna i Sverige, blondinbella.se och kissies.se. Studiens syfte är att ta reda på vilka markörer för klass och genus som kan hittas på bloggarna och utifrån dessa vilken bild av att vara ung tjej det är som förmedlas till bloggarnas läsare. Debatten om de två aktuella bloggarna pågår i media och speciellt är det författarna bakom bloggarna som uppmärksammas, Isabella Löwengrip och Alexandra Nilsson. Med hjälp av teorier kring kön och klass analyserar jag bloggarnas innehåll och försöker utkristallisera vilka teman som är dominerande på dessa bloggar. Resultatdelen är uppdelad utifrån dessa teman som handlar om shopping, kroppsuppfattning och valmöjligheter. Ett utmärkande drag i bloggarna är betoningen på jaget, den individuella upplevelsen av allt som händer och hur alla omnämnda händelser relaterar till bloggerskorna själva. Det som till en början framstod som två ungefär lika modebloggar, har visat sig rymma fler olikheter och fler dolda sociala mekanismer än vad man först kunnat ana. Hur bloggerskorna förhåller sig till sin vardag, sin omgivning och till kritik och ideal, formas till stor del av deras klasstillhörighet. En annan slutsats är att den kommersiella sidan av bloggarna i stora delar utformar vad det skrivs om, vilket påverkar helhetsupplevelsen som förmedlas.
This is a qualitative study of the two biggest blogs in Sweden, blondinbella.se and kissies.se. The purpose of this study is to find out which characteristics can be found that represent social class and gender, and from that perspective, what image of being a young girl is forwarded to the readers of these blogs. The media debate on the two blogs is ongoing and of special interest are the two writers of these blogs, Isabella Löwengrip and Alexandra Nilsson. With the help of social class and gender theories I analyze the content of the two blogs and try to distinguish which themes are dominant. The result part is divided from those themes that consider shopping, bodily self-esteem and choices. A predominating characteristic on the blogs is the emphasis on the self, the individual experience, and how all that is happening is related to the bloggers themselves. What in the beginning appeared to be two similar fashionblogs, has turned out to be embedding more diversity and hidden social mechanisms than was first apparent. How the bloggers relate to their everyday life, their settings and to critique and ideals, is in big parts shaped by their social class. Another conclusion is that the commercial side of the blogs in large aspects shapes what is written and this affects the subjective total experience of the blogs

The novel manuscript Girl in the Shadows tells the story of two teenage girls whose friendship, safety and sanity are pushed to the limits when an unexplained phenomenon invades their lives. Sixteen-year-old Tash has everything a teenage girl could want: good looks, brains and freedom from her busy parents. But when she looks into her mirror, a stranger’s face stares back at her. Her best friend Mal believes it’s an evil spirit and enters the world of the supernatural to find answers. But spell books and ouija boards cannot fix a problem that comes from deep within the soul. It will take a journey to the edge of madness for Tash to face the truth inside her heart and see the evil that lurks in her home. And Mal’s love and courage to pull her back into life. The exegesis examines resilience and coping strategies in adolescence, in particular, the relationship of trauma to brain development in children and teenagers. It draws on recent discoveries in neuroscience and psychology to provide a framework to examine the role of coping strategies in building resilience. Within this broader context, it analyses two works of contemporary young adult fiction, Freaky Green Eyes by Joyce Carol Oates and Sonya Hartnett’s Surrender, their use of the split persona as a coping mechanism within young adult fiction and the potential of young adult literature as a tool to help build resilience in teen readers.

Abstract:
This study explores the experiences of young women, growing up and coming out as other than heterosexual in contemporary Northern Ireland as a means of examining ways in which sexualities are 'organised through economic, religious, political, familial and social conditions' (Plummer, 2003:515). Informed by an interactionist approach it considers the 'everyday' ways in which young women construct non-conventional sexualities within a hostile social context, and how their interactions with significant others, particularly through processes of coming out, shape constructions of difference. It further explores their experiences with key social institutions and their influence on the construction of personal identity and sense of self in society. In seeking to hear the experiences of those regularly overlooked within LGBT research, a feminist methodology was implemented. The research suggests a number of ways in which young women understand their sexual selves, the categorization used to explain this to others and the range of ways in which these identities are managed and negotiated in everyday life. It demonstrates that age and gender are crucial in the construction of sexual identities. Based on developmental age-related assumptions about sexuality, young women's same-sex attractions are often discredited and demeaned during this period. Further, so closely tied are expectations regarding gender and sexuality that non-heterosexual young women can experience profound feelings of 'difference' and 'failure' growing up as a ‘different kind of girl'. Overall the research demonstrates the prevalence of normative gendered heterosexuality in contemporary Northern Ireland. Such norms conferring status on particular presentations of selfhood were reflected, reproduced and privileged across many institutions with which young women interact. The pervasiveness of this, and the authority of these institutions at a time when young people are so heavily involved in, and monitored by them, it is demonstrated, makes experiences of growing up and 'coming out' complex.

Utifrån tankar om makt, begär och normalitet ämnar texten skapa en förståelse både för Alva Roselius konstnärskap, och idén om konstnärskap i vidare bemärkelse. Med avstamp i personliga berättelser diskuteras Friedrich Nietzsches begrepp ‘ressentiment’ och Wendy Browns tanke om att alla människor i ett senkapitalistiskt samhälle bär på detta. Vidare avhandlas språket, och dess inneboende makt, i relation till kroppen och den fysiska akten av att brodera. Broderiet diskuteras fortsatt utifrån sin kvinnligt kodade tradition och med utgångspunkt i Tiqquns Preliminary Materials for a Theory of a Young-Girl ifrågasätts idén om the young-girls universalitet. Att den ideala medborgaren i ett konsumtionssamhälle beskrivs som en young girl handlar om makt snarare än slump. Det feminint kodades icke-universella varande stärks av Rozsika Parker som härleder konsthantverkets, jämte konstens, låga status till dess utövare. Hon visar på att konst traditionellt skapats av män medan konsthantverk utförts av kvinnor. Texten resonerar avslutningsvis kring motsättningen mellan det kvinnliga och det konstnärliga och menar att detta idag är helt förändrat, då konstnärens prekära arbetssituationen givit denne en kvinnligt kodad expertis. Alla konstnärer är således kvinnligt kodade. Konstnären är inte längre ett ensamt geni som drivs av behovet att skapa, konstnären är the young girl, driven av upprättelsebehov. Texten rör sig mellan ett poetiskt och ett akademiskt språk och refererar, i linje med detta, till poeter tillika teoretiker och konstnärer.

The paper is describe the study of features of control of behavior of young man and girl from complete and single-parent families. The data of 114 people aged 18 to 21 years (average age 19.7 years) were analyzed. Of these, 23 men from the complete family and 21 from the single-parent family (44 boys in total)? 38 girls from the complete family and 32girls from the incomplete family (70 girls in total) in terms of cognitive, emotional and volitional control, as components of unifying regulatory construct “control of behavior” (Sergienko, 2018). It was shown that the family type is important for the development of control of behavior for boys in comparison with girls. Boys from complete families have more developed abilities in the field of recognition and regulation of emotions in comparison with boys from single-parent families. In addition, for boys their age is important when the family has become incomplete from the position of the development of cognitive independence.

This study is a major part of the dissertation research. It is focused on the development of shooting skills in young biathletes in a three-year training period. Specifically, the long-term development of the percentage success rate of prone and standing shooting in both training and races is described in study. It mentions marginally shooting skills such as the postural stability, the stability of aiming and triggering. The first part of our research, completed in 2017, brought findings that the relationship between exercise intensity and the biathlete’s postural stability exists, but following part of it, finalized in 2018, did not demonstrate the dependence of exercise intensity on the aiming stability and triggering. Initially, the study involved 23 young biathletes (13 girls, 10 boys). Whole research was completed by 19 biathletes (11 girls: age 17.8±0.64 years; 8 boys: age 17.4±0.72 years) after three years. The results of our current study are based on the records of shooting on metal targets that were created during each biathlon shooting training and all biathlon races of the participants in the three-year period. Only shooting with previous physical load was involved into results, shooting at rest was not included in the study. The results show the improvement of the percentage success rate in both prone and standing shooting in the three-year training period in both girl and boy groups and in both training and races (total percentage success rate = the average of the training and races percentage success rate – girls in prone: 2016/2017: 71.3%, 2017/2018: 75.5%, 2018/2019: 80.0%; girls in standing: 2016/2017: 61.8%, 2017/2018: 67.7%, 2018/2019: 73.4%; boys in prone: 2016/2017: 72.0%, 2017/2018: 72.9%, 2018/2019: 75.3%; boys in standing: 2016/2017: 57.6%, 2017/2018: 63.5%, 2018/2019: 67.7%). Girls are better shooters than boys in this research group. In general, the gradual improvement of percentage success rate in time is expected to occur in young biathletes that are in the intensive training process, but our study brings unique data of concretely values at this age of athletes that has not been known yet. The obtained data could be used by biathlon trainers to compare the current level of shooting skills at a given age of their young athletes. At the same time, a normative standard of biathlon shooting skills in a given age could be created in the case of gathering more data. That is one of the goals of the Czech Biathlon Union.

ABSTRACT Background: Child marriage is the result of the interplay of economic and social forces. In communities where the practice is prevalent, marrying a girl as a child is part of a cluster of social norms and attitudes that reflect the low value accorded to the human rights of girls. Child marriage has many effects on girls’ health. This study aimed to assess factors associated with early marriage among young women in Blora, Central Java, Indonesia. Subjects and Method: A cross sectional study was carried out in Blora, Central Java, from September to October 2019. A sample of 200 married female was selected randomly. The dependent variable was early marriage. The independent variables were intention, attitude, parental income, peer support, teacher support, culture, female value, subjective norm, and perceived behavior control. Results: The risk of early marriage increased with supportive culture toward early marriage (OR= 5.34; 95% CI= 1.12 to 25.34; p= 0.035), negative female value (OR= 5.27; 95% CI= 1.04 to 26.72; p= 0.045), supportive attitude toward early marriage (OR= 10.2; 95% CI= 1.99 to 52.8; p= 0.005), and weak perceived behavior control (OR= 33.8; 95% CI= 4.18 to 273.67; p= 0.001). The risk of early marriage decreased with peer support toward delayed marriage (OR= 0.09; 95% CI= 0.01 to 0.50; p= 0.006), high parental income (OR= 0.16; 95% CI= 0.03 to 0.87; p= 0.034), parental support toward delayed marriage (OR= 0.07; 95% CI= 0.01 to 0.38; p= 0.002), positive female value (OR= 0.09; 95% CI= 0.01 to 0.45; p= 0.003), weak intention toward early marriage (OR= 0.19; 95% CI= 0.04 to 0.91; p= 0.039), and weak subjective norm (OR= 0.10; 95% CI= 0.01 to 0.59; p= 0.011). Conclusion: The risk of early marriage increases with supportive culture toward early marriage, negative female value, supportive attitude toward early marriage, and weak perceived behavior control. The risk of early marriage decreases with peer support toward delayed marriage, high parental income, parental support toward delayed marriage, positive female value, weak intention toward early marriage, and weak subjective norm. Cervical cancer is the most common gynaecological malignancy worldwide. The most common type of cervical carcinoma is squamous cell carcinoma followed by adenocarcinoma of cervix, which constitutes only 15% of cases. Adenocarcinoma of cervix can be categorized histologically into clear cell, mucinous, endometrioid, serous and mesonephric subtypes. Clear cell adenocarcinoma (CCA) most commonly occurs in the ovary, followed by endometrium, vagina, and cervix. Primary CCA of cervix is a rare neoplastic entity, which occurs in young women exposed to diethylstilbestrol (DES) in utero. It is extremely rare in women without in utero DES exposure and in such cases it concerns mostly postmenopausal women. Here, we present a case of 30 year old woman who presented with primary infertility. There was no history of in-utero exposure to diethyl stilbestrol. She was diagnosed a case of cervical fibroid on ultrasonography. Diagnostic hysteroscopy was done and she was found to have friable, vascular growth in endocervix, which was extending to uterine cavity. Biopsy was taken. On histopathology, moderately differentiated clear cell adenocarcinoma of cervix was reported. Through this case, authors would like to highlight the probability of rare occurrence and how to manage challenges posed by cervical cancer in young girl wishing to conceive, stressing on the role of hysteroscopy in diagnosis.

Tap and Reposition Youth (TRY) was a four-year initiative undertaken by the Population Council and K-Rep Development Agency to reduce adolescents’ vulnerabilities to adverse social and reproductive health outcomes by improving livelihoods options. The project targeted out-of-school adolescent girls and young women aged 16–22 residing in low-income and slum areas of Nairobi. TRY used a modified group-based micro-finance model to extend integrated savings, credit, business support, and mentoring to out-of-school adolescents and young women. A longitudinal study of participants was conducted with a matched comparison group identified through cross-sectional community-based studies, undertaken at baseline and endline to enable an assessment of changes associated with the project. This report states that 326 participants and their controls were interviewed at baseline and 222 pairs were interviewed at endline. The results suggest that rigorous micro-finance models may be appropriate for a subset of girls, especially those who are older and less vulnerable. The impact on noneconomic indicators is less clear. Additional experimentation and adaptation is required to develop livelihoods models that acknowledge and respond to the particular situation of adolescent girls.
