Ezzerelli, Kaïs. The Publicist and his Newspaper in Syria in the Era of the Young Turk Revolution, between Reformist Commitment and Political Pressures: Muhammad Kurd ‘Ali and al-Muqtabas (1908–17). Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474430616.003.0007.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the career of Muhammad Kurd ‘Ali (1876–1953) and his daily newspaper al-Muqtabas, founded in Damascus in December 1908 following the Young Turk Revolution. Close to the Syrian reformists, who comprised his readers and editorial team, Kurd ‘Ali contrived to make al-Muqtabas one of the most widely read and influential Arabic dailies in the region. During World War I Kurd ‘Ali and his newspaper faced the dilemma: either to be condemned by or to participate in Ottoman propaganda. Based on a close reading of al-Muqtabas, public archives and contemporary testimonies related to this family enterprise, this chapter focuses on the relationships between Kurd ‘Ali and his newspaper, his readers and collaborators, as well as his ties with the political powers of that time.

Abstract:
This is a book of unexpected drama: all eleven chief rabbis appointed in this period of unprecedented change in the Jewish communities of the Fertile Crescent became the subject of controversy and were subsequently dismissed. This took place against a background of events rarely discussed in the context of Jewish society. The book paints a colourful picture of these upheavals set firmly in the social and political context of the time and far removed from the commonly accepted image of Jewish communities in the Ottoman Empire. Jews were also affected by modernization and political conflict in the wider society of the time, and these too gave rise to power struggles. The chief rabbis were at the forefront of these confrontations. Most of them recognized that the challenges of modernization had to be met. Their openness to change stemmed from a concern for the future of the communities for which they were responsible, but they were often vociferously opposed. The communal politics that ensued were sometimes heated to the point of violence. In the latter years of the empire, many Jews came to support the Young Turks, with their promise of liberty and equality for all. Rabbis had to develop political awareness and engage in Ottoman politics. This was another source of tension within the community since the new regime punished anyone suspected of opposition severely. The book offers a lens through which to view the Jewish society of the Ottoman Empire at a time when all the traditional norms were being challenged.

Abstract:
This book tells the story of the Muslim community in modern Bulgaria during a period of imperial dissolution, conflicting national and imperial enterprises, and the emergence of new national and ethnic identities. Following the Ottoman-Russian war of 1877-1878 that paved the way for Bulgarian independence, a movement for cultural reform and political mobilization gained momentum within Bulgaria’s sizable Muslim population. From the establishment of the Bulgarian state in 1878 until the 1908 Young Turk revolution, this reform movement emerged as part of a struggle to redefine Muslim collective identity without severing ties to the Ottomans, during a period when Muslims were losing faith in the Sultan, while also fearing Young Turk secularism. This book draws on both Ottoman and Eastern European historiographies, and approaches the question of Balkan Muslims’ engagement with modernity through a transnational lens, demonstrating how Bulgarian Muslims debated similar questions as Muslims elsewhere around the world. This book situates the Bulgarian story within a global narrative of Muslim political and cultural reform movements, analyzes how Muslims understood and conceptualized “Europe,” and reveals the centrality of the Bulgarian Muslims to the Young Turk Revolution. Milena Methodieva makes a compelling case for how the experience of a Muslim minority provides new insight into the nature of nationalism, citizenship, and state formation.
