Abstract:
This chapter explores ‘theatre of operations’ as a legal concept in international law, with emphasis on the geographical extent—‘boundaries of the battlefield’—of the use of force by belligerents. It addresses the meaning of ‘theatre of operations’ by considering two legal issues: the right of parties to an armed conflict to conduct military operations and the applicable law to armed operations carried out beyond the borders of a state. It examines the notion of the area of war in the context of jus in bello, jus ad bellum, and actions taken by the UN Security Council in response to armed conflicts, with reference to security and exclusion zones. It identifies ‘protected zones’ in which military operations are excluded based on the international law of armed conflicts and looks at issues raised by cyber warfare pertaining to the applicability of classic provisions of jus ad bellum and jus in bello.

Abstract:
This chapter analyses five sets of challenges related to logistics support that constrained AMISOM’s operational effectiveness. These revolved around the expanding scope of UNSOA’s mandated tasks; the clash between the distinct organizational cultures at the UN and the AU; the highly insecure operating environment in Somalia; the problems posed by the size of UNSOA’s theatre of operations from 2012; and some of the idiosyncrasies of its principal client, AMISOM. UNSOA had a mixed record but overall produced positive results for AMISOM and demonstrated a new, flexible mechanism for the UN to deliver field support. The chapter concludes by identifying six lessons UNSOA’s experience offers for future peace operations, especially in Africa.

Hughes, Jim. Management of theatre imaging. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198813170.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter covers the basics of managing surgical imaging across one or more theatres/operating rooms, with examples of potential pitfalls and errors that may occur and how to remedy them. Professional working and management of conflict and issues is also covered, at the level of both the individual radiographer and the team manager. As C-arm systems are expensive, it is unlikely that each operation theatre in a hospital will have its own, and imaging systems will hence be shared across the theatre department. It is therefore important for radiographers working in theatre departments to manage their resources and coordinate with theatre teams to avoid delaying procedures.

Fair, Alistair. ‘Housing the Arts’. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198807476.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses how major new theatres were funded in Britain between the 1950s and the 1980s. It considers the role of local government in promoting and subsidizing the construction of theatres, as well as the contributions made by individual benefactors, grant-giving trusts, and local fundraising efforts. Its focus, however, is the Arts Council’s ‘Housing the Arts’ programme, which was introduced in 1965 and survived into the 1980s. ‘Housing the Arts’ only ever part funded theatre-building projects, but its views carried particular weight. Based on the extensive archives relating to the programme, the chapter charts the origins and operation of the programme, and the difficulties that it increasingly faced.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter draws on archival material from Vancouver, Canada, to examine the business operation behind the Chinatown stage. The focus on the operational side of Cantonese opera as a Chinatown-based transnational business dovetails with the institutional approach and emphases in the other parts of the book. Especially with regard to North America, the findings on the performing itineraries of actors and actresses, and the underlying commercial and social networks that supported such mobility, not only illustrate the dynamic quality of transnational theater, but provide testimony to the historical agency of the migrant communities often overlooked in the circumscribed environment of Chinatown during the exclusion era. Chinatown theater may seem elusive as a subject of historical analysis, but it was indeed a most demonstrably transnational undertaking in the diaspora experience of these migrants.

Thompson, Julian. The Operational Legacy of the Falklands War. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190851163.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores the operational legacy of the Falklands War through the lens of organizational and operational innovations. It takes Freedman’s official history of the conflict, and its assessment of the legacy of the conflict, as the point of departure. Based on the premise that the conflict was the first British naval operation in decades, it identifies a range of innovations – the establishment of a war cabinet, the appointment of an overall in-theatre commander, the requirement for an amphibious capability amongst them – that can be linked to the success of the Falklands campaign. But, the legacy of the Falklands has been lost. However, very little of the operational legacy of the Falklands War remains.
