Brown, Paul. "Early modern theatre people and their social networks." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/14955.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis contributes new knowledge to an understanding of how people's social networks in the early modern theatre shaped the drama they created. By studying the lives of people working in the theatre, attending to biographical details not hitherto fully considered, it recasts received narratives of theatre history. Where theatre historians often tell stories of competition and combat, it finds evidence too for considerable amity across webs of relationships that are here called 'social networks'. This thesis offers new biographical facts about life events for the actor Richard Bradshaw and the actor-writer William Rowley. In addition, it endeavours to change the way historians think about collaborative playwriting in the period. Based on quantitative analysis, this thesis shows the rates of collaboration to be about half the rate of heretofore accepted estimates. Chapter One considers in detail the narratives that historians construct about the early modern theatre and the problems associated with them. It reviews the various classes of evidence used in later chapters and the uses to which such evidence can reasonably be put. Chapter Two explores an industry in expansion in the 1590s, re-examining the well-known duopoly narrative and reconsidering the various professional pursuits and diverse residences of actors and playwrights in the period. Chapter Three looks at the following decade, the 1600s, and the re-emergence of troupes of boy actors into an expanding and stabilising industry. Chapter Four shows how collaborative writing, though prevalent, was not as frequent as is usually thought; it also shows stark differences in rates of staging collaborative drama between companies. Each chapter closes with a biographical case study of a theatre person whose life is considered in terms of their social network. An examination of such networks is then used to reshape the way we understand events in their life and broader currents that involve the entire early modern theatre industry. Thinking about who interacted with whom and why adds a new layer of complexity to our collective model of how this entertainment industry produced the period's extraordinary proliferation of highly valued plays.

MacDougall, Susan. ""There is fear of tomorrow": Displaced Iraqi women in Jordan narrate their pasts and futures." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/204294.

Full text
Abstract:
Iraqi women living in Amman, Jordan view the city as a temporary residence, and their lives there are characterized by uncertainty and isolation. Iraqi social history, Jordanian policies on immigration and citizenship, and economic hardship all contribute to the production and maintenance of this uncertainty. These factors also prevent the formation of a cohesive Iraqi community in Amman, and thus the development of a shared understanding of the violence and displacement that this group has experienced. Given these circumstances, the manner in which Iraqi women articulate their relationship to their country of origin is highly idiosyncratic and responsive to the demands of their daily lives in Jordan as they prepare mentally either to return to Iraq or to resettle in a third country.

Nitkin, Patricia. "Being there : relationships between people with cancer and their pets : what helps and what hinders." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/46255.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative research examined the little studied area of human-pet relationships and their impact on persons with cancer. The goal of this study was to gather information from individuals with cancer who had a pet during their illness and explore the helpful and unhelpful aspects of that relationship as people dealt with the socio-emotional, physiological and spiritual challenges usually accompanying diagnosis and treatment. The Enhanced Critical Incident Technique method (Butterfield, Borgen, Maglio, & Amundson, 2009) was used to gather information and interpret the interviews of 13 British Columbian women with cancer about their relationships with their companion animals. From these interviews, 13 personal accounts were created to give voice to the women???s experiences. The bulk of the data focused on clear descriptions of the ways in which pets contributed to and/or detracted from the participants??? sense of wellbeing during their illness. From this 487 helping critical incidents and 109 hindering critical incidents were formed into 13 categories that represented the areas of impact. In rank order of participation rate the categories are: Companionship & Presence; Emotional & Social Support; Purpose & Role; How Pets are Different from People; Health and Pain Management; Pet Intuition & Adaptability; Being Positive & in the Moment; Pet as Protector & Caregiver; Touch; Unconditional Love & Devotion; Existential & Spiritual Factors; Family Members & Finances, and Caretaking of Sick or Dying Pet. The findings of the study are congruent with the literature from the fields of veterinary medicine, social work, nursing, and anthrozoology in that they confirm the significant and primarily positive impact of the social support, trust and bond experienced by human beings from their companion animals. The results also indicate the distress caused by the lack of resources for pets when they are ill and the suffering caused by pet illness and bereavement. Other unique findings include participants??? experience of their pets as able to intuit subtle changes post-diagnosis and instantly modify their behaviour to attend to their human companions. It is suggested that psychological theory, practice and research engage with further exploration of the relationships between people and their companion animals.

Cole, Richard. "The Jew Who Wasn't There: Studies on Jews and Their Absence in Old Norse Literature." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:23845410.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores certain attitudes towards Jews and Judaism in Old Norse literature. Regardless of an apparent lack of actual Jewish settlement in the Nordic region during the Middle Ages, medieval Icelanders and Norwegians frequently turned to the image of 'the Jew' in writing and in art, sometimes using him as an abstract theological model, or elsewhere constructing a similar kind of ethnic Other to the anti-Semitic tropes we find in medieval societies where gentiles really did live alongside Jews. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the differing histories and functions projected onto the absent Jew in medieval Scandinavia.<br>Germanic Languages and Literatures

Abstract:
This paper studies the difference in number of tourist arrivals between the Olympic games and the Paralympic games in the hosting countries. Using the difference-in-differences method, results show that there is a difference in the number of tourist arrivals between the summer games and winter games, and that hosting the games have a bigger impact on smaller city than on bigger one. They also show that since Vancouver 2010 the Olympic games always attracted more tourists than the Paralympic games. The main conclusion of this paper is that there is definitely a difference in the tourist inflow between the Olympic games and Paralympic games and that the Olympic games attract more tourists than the Paralympic games.

Albutt, Abigail Kathleen. "Is there a role for patients and their relatives in monitoring, detecting and escalating clinical deterioration in hospital?" Thesis, University of Leeds, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/20121/.

Full text
Abstract:
Measures exist to improve early recognition of, and response to deteriorating patients in hospital. Yet, 11% of deaths in UK hospitals in 2005 were the result of patient deterioration going unrecognised or not being acted on (NPSA, 2007). The thesis aimed to investigate whether patients and relatives can aid health professionals in recognising clinical deterioration. A systematic review was conducted which identified interventions that allow patients and relatives to escalate patient deterioration. However, there is not strong evidence for the clinical effectiveness of these interventions, and a limited understanding of patient and relative ability to recognise patient deterioration. In study 1, health professionals generated potentially feasible and acceptable methods of involving patients and/or relatives in recognising deterioration in hospital. Recording patients’ views on changes in their wellness during routine observation was proposed. Focus groups were held in study 2 with healthcare assistants and patients to develop a questionnaire to capture patients’ and relatives’ ratings of patient wellness. Study 3 piloted approaches to routinely collecting patient wellness ratings using the questionnaire on in-patient wards. Where the researcher attended observation to record patients’ ratings, this was acceptable to most patients. However, there was limited uptake where patients and relatives were invited to complete the questionnaire themselves, and staff were invited to record patients’ wellness ratings during observation. It may be necessary to encourage and support staff to adopt this change in practice. In study 4, the use of behaviour change techniques to encourage staff to routinely record patient-reported wellness in practice were effective on wards showing high previous levels of engagement with the observation system. The clinical effectiveness of routinely recording patient-reported wellness was also explored. Significant associations between patient-reported wellness, and early warning score and vital sign measurements were found, and these were stronger in more acutely unwell patients. Evidence from the thesis suggests that routinely recording patient-reported wellness may be one feasible strategy that could aid health professionals in the early recognition of clinical deterioration.

Sunni-Ali, Asantewa Fulani. "Impact Repertory Theatre as a Tool of Empowerment: Black Youth Describe their Experiences and Perceptions." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2010. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/aas_theses/3.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative phenomenological study explores the role of Theatre as a tool of empowerment for Black youth. This study involves IMPACT Repertory Theatre of Harlem (IMPACT), a Theatre group that consists of Black youth between the ages of 12-19. Observations, focus-group interviews and audiovisual material were used to explore Black youth's experiences with and perceptions of Theatre via IMPACT. The existing literature surrounding the topic of Theatre for youth empowerment contains the following gaps: they do not give a voice to the youth in question, they are seldom conducted in the U.S. and they do not specifically focus on Black youth. Analysis included categorizing the data and then putting it into themes. In the study’s findings, participants reveal that Theatre via IMPACT offers a source of family like support, a safe space and opportunities for self discovery and transformation.

Abstract:
The thesis concerns the artworks by Johan Sylvius in the staircase, upper vestibule, upper north guard room and upper gallery of the Drottningholm Palace, as painted performances. They are studied as performative cultural encounters with a historically situated beholder but will also be regarded in relation to their spatial and artistic surrounding. From the theoretical framework of performativity and reception aesthetics, the results indicate that the images have the potential to inscribe the beholder within certain postulates on power relations and politics of identity, through working with splendour, naturalism, narrative and the function of the rooms they are located in. The results further point to the images’ manners of effecting the beholder on several levels through an employed pluralism and lastly, that they both build upon and re-produce the relation between monarch/nobility, where the former is the sole figure who both grants status and can remove it in an instance.

O'Connor, Eileen. "'There is a lot to be learnt' : assistant principals' perceptions of their professional learning experiences and learning needs in their role as middle leaders in Irish post-primary schools." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2008. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10019858/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores Assistant Principals' perceptions of their professional learning and learning experiences as Middle Leaders in Irish Post-primary schools. The purpose of the study is to gain insights into and an understanding of the key enablers and inhibitors of Assistant Principals' learning, an area hitherto ignored in the Irish education research context. The study aims to contribute to the qualitative knowledge base on Assistant Principals' learning and to inform Irish discourse and policy with regard to the continuing professional development of this group of educators in Irish post-primary schools. The literature called upon is found within the fields of teacher professionalism, adult learning, and continuing professional development. It serves the dual purpose of shaping the data generated in the study and of providing a theoretical lens through which data are interrogated. Using qualitative methodology, the empirical investigation is based on semi-structured interviews with 21 Assistant Principals, incorporating the range of Irish post-primary schools, both religious and state run, both genders and a range of experience in the role. With regard to this area of professional learning, the findings are significant in that they have disrupted a prevailing silence and have made overt issues hitherto neglected in the Irish education context. They pose a range of challenges to our understanding of the complexity of Assistant Principals' learning. They highlight that Assistant Principals' learning is haphazard, time-poor, emotionally charged and neglected both by themselves and the system. The roles of school culture, school leadership and emotions emerge as significant variables which impact on Assistant Principals' learning. The outcomes of the study are challenging for Assistant Principals as professional learners, for their school communities as enablers and supporters of their learning and for those charged locally and nationally with overseeing and developing a learning agenda for middle leadership in Irish post-primary schools.

Full text
Abstract:
<p> The issue of marginalization has acquired a position of important scrutiny over the past fifty years among Communication scholars. Two theories in particular deal with this issue in a theoretical and practical way: Muted Group Theory and Standpoint Theory. Muted Group Theory, based on the work of Kramarae (Foss, Foss, &amp; Griffin, 1999), Ardener, and Ardener (1973, 1975, 1980, 2005), purports that the linguistic nature of the world lends itself to power structures in which the language and word choice of one group is able to dominate the voice of another. Standpoint Theory, popularized by the work of Harding and Hill Collins, and brought to greater working prominence within the communication field through Wood and Houston, essentially deals with &ldquo;how the circumstances of an individual&rsquo;s life affect how that individual understands and constructs a social world&rdquo; (Littlejohn &amp; Foss, 2011, p. 110). While these two theories are typically applied to causes generally considered to be championed by liberal ideologists, they are not without their crossover value within the realm of conservative causes. The thrust of this study is to take one such cause&mdash;the voice of the conservative theatre practitioner within the greater theatre industry&mdash;and examine it through the lens of these two theories to the end that the issue of marginalization and its effects on these practitioners may be understood and that such marginalization may be mediated through the use of practical and theory-based strategies. </p><p>

Abstract:
In this essay, the aim is to analyse the representation of collective and cultural trauma within the narrative of Tommy Orange's novel There There, as well as how the novel is redressing the experience of traumatisation, leading a way towards healing. To do this, the essay will focus on six of the novel's characters as well as the title, prologue and interlude. By using concepts of colonial and transgenerational trauma as well as survivance to approach the novel, the essay will argue that, as it makes the trauma visible, the narrative shows that healing can still be possible after traumatisation.

Hudson-Tyreman, Aaron D. Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2017. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/24730.

Abstract:
Despite the extensive literature regarding mediation, there remains very little empirical and objective research that gives regard to the characteristics of the Mediator as a neutral third party to a dispute. There is a substantial body of work that discusses the merits of mediation and the skills required to be a good or successful mediator. There are observational studies carried out on a small number of mediations mostly carried out by mediators who tend to see their role through a rather tinted world view. These neutrals hold a very peculiar position within the theatre of law, they have no definable regulatory body, no prerequisite for academic qualification and yet the majority of the work is carried out by a small number of individuals who by and large have been the 'leaders in the field' since they brought mediation to the forefront of dispute resolving as a protocol of the procedural rules. Utilising both self-reflection and psychometric models, 50 of the UKs leading commercial mediators submitted to a series of evaluative surveys to establish whether they had defining characteristics outside of the norm. Using the five factor model of personality (FFM) measured through the workplace test 'ORPHEUS', the subject group of 32 males and 18 females, were tested to establish whether there were any statistically significant traits. Across the five major and seven minor domains it was found that as a group the commercial mediators scored significantly lower than the mean along the major scale of Conformity, suggesting higher than average Creativity. The females group scored significantly lower across the domain in comparison to the males group. Within the minor trait scales, the group scored significantly higher than the mean across; Work Orientation, Fair-Mindedness and Initiative. However, the role is dominated by white, male lawyers of sixty-one years of age. They are Christian and have at a minimum undergraduate qualification in law, they will practice commercial mediation on a full-time basis and be accredited by at least one accrediting body, most notably CEDR. On average they will have practiced mediation for 20 years and carry out in excess of fifty-five mediations per year. They are mildly introverted creative types with higher than average initiative with a strong work ethic and a fair-minded approach.

Abstract:
<p> Ideally, undergraduates view their elective courses in general education curriculums as having value. Unfortunately, scant research exists on the value of theatre arts appreciation courses. This study addressed that void through hermeneutical exploration of experiences of a purposeful sample of seven students enrolled in theatre arts appreciation courses. Two research questions guided this study: &ldquo; For undergraduate students taking a general education theatre arts appreciation elective, what experience(s) allowed the course to transcend from perfunctory to inspirational?&rdquo; and &ldquo; To what degree did taking a general education theatre arts appreciation elective impact the students&rsquo; perception of their overall higher education experience?&rdquo; Methodologically, hermeneutic phenomenology was used to uncover data through conversational interviews with undergraduates. The works of Nakkula and Ravitch (1998), Seidman (2006), and Van Manen (1990) provided a foundation for data collection and analysis. </p><p> The findings of the study are represented through a one-act play to (re)present educational research that &ldquo;bring[s] the text to life in ways that the reading of it could not&rdquo; (Bagley &amp; Cancienne, 2002, p. 7) and to treat research participants as more than just &ldquo;text to be read or interpreted&rdquo; (Moustakas, 1994, p. 19). Profiles of the seven subjects were created to allow the reader to become more familiar and engaged with the participants. From the words and conversations of those participants, I amalgamated four characters, with a fifth, the facilitator, serving as the researcher&rsquo;s voice. </p><p> The results of this study suggest that students entered passively into their theatre arts appreciation course, engaged with it through discussions with students and the professor, and came out with the trajectory of their life changed. The findings suggest that becoming life-ready is a phenomenon that occurs when seemingly nonengaged or passive students enroll in a course that is broad, detailed, and subjective enough to allow them to transcend their world visions. This qualitative study offers insight into students&rsquo; thinking and feelings and contributes to the overall conversation and assessment of higher education elective courses in performing arts and the unique contributions they offer undergraduates. Based on these findings, conclusions and recommendations are offered.</p>

Forbes, Kenneth. "You had to be there? : reflections on the 'legendary' status of the Glasgow Apollo theatre (1973-85)." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/6794/.

Full text
Abstract:
The ephemeral nature of live music can, from some perspectives, serve to place limitations on its lasting socio-cultural impact. This thesis addresses such claims by analysing the enduring appeal of a ‘legendary’ venue, the Glasgow Apollo (1973-85), where a series of momentous live music moments from several decades ago continue to be celebrated. In order to accomplish this, the study primarily uses semi-structured and focus group interviews to explore the reminiscences of the audience and artists who shared live music experiences at the venue. Through the application of Actor Network Theory, the work focuses on the influence that actors such as locality, technology, industry and music genre held over these encounters, as well as the manner in which the collective memories of the events in question have subsequently shaped their cultural value. The study first establishes the foundation for Glasgow’s cultural traditions, which thereafter helped to shape the concert experiences at the Apollo. It then follows the actors through, and beyond, the period of the venue’s tenure, to argue that the Apollo ‘legend’ lingers due to the manner in which these live experiences have been collectively framed within several of the platforms dedicated to the venue’s legacy.

Calderazzo, Diana Louise. "STEPHEN SONDHEIM S GESAMTKUNSTWERK: THE CONCEPT MUSICAL AS WAGNERIAN TOTAL THEATRE." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2005. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3512.

Abstract:
Stephen Sondheim, famous for writing such musicals as Company, Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, and Assassins, is often referred to as the originator of the modern concept musical. Despite varying definitions of the concept musical, it is generally agreed that the form embodies a specific identity or mood, which it communicates to an audience both emotionally and intellectually. As such it offers audience members a complete experience resembling in theory the idea of "total theatre" proposed in the nineteenth century by composer Richard Wagner. My thesis will argue that the similarity between Sondheim's concept musical and Wagner's total theatre is more than purely theoretical; it is practical as well, involving structural parallels such as leitmotif, minor chord development, and intricate lyricism. Congruently, many of Sondheim's choices describing communication with audiences on the emotional and intellectual levels also recall those utilized by Wagner over a century earlier. These similarities not withstanding, Sondheim, as a contemporary artist, creates work that has often been described in terms of theoretical movements that post-date Wagner, including "desconstructionism" and Brechtian theatre. While these terms certainly describe some differences between the work of Sondheim and Wagner, I will argue that their existence with regard to Sondheim does not preclude a Wagnerian approach to the contemporary composer's work. Elements of deconstruction and Brechtian alienation may, in fact, be linked back to Wagner in specific manners. My thesis will explore these connections, concluding that an approach to the work of Sondheim in the vein of Richard Wagner may suggest a successful method of interpreting the contemporary concept musical.<br>M.A.<br>Department of Theatre<br>Arts and Sciences<br>Theatre

Abstract:
Veterinary medicine in late-mediaeval England has thus far received little attention. This study therefore aims to partly fill this gap by providing an insight into English veterinary practices at this time. The introduction places the animals under discussion into context, from the noble war-horse to the lowly pig. Also discussed are the sources, with their intended audience and evidence for use. The first chapter concentrates on those who were responsible for treating animals when ill, examining the qualities sought in such people, and the source of their learning. In the second chapter the ailments suffered by mediaeval animals are discussed, together with the causes of illness and methods of diagnosis. The third, and final, chapter examines the treatment meted out to animals. Firstly the factors influencing this are explored, followed by surgical intervention, then therapeutic methods of treatment. The precautions taken when treating animals are looked at, as too is the efficacy of the remedies, whilst finally the preparation of medicines, the instruments used, and the materia medica employed are discussed. The aim of this study is not only to provide an insight into the state of veterinary medicine in late-mediaeval England, but also to adopt a broader and more comparative approach than has hitherto been undertaken. It therefore draws upon veterinary texts, hawking and hunting manuals, husbandry treatises, and recipe collections, in order to compare and contrast the ailments and treatment meted out to a variety of animals. Another important facet is to examine the reality of care, which is achieved through an examination of sources such as household and manorial accounts. By marrying the actuality of care with the theory and recommendations of treatises and recipe collections, our understanding of animal welfare is more greatly enhanced.

Abstract:
Nash's Theorem is a famous and widely used result in non-cooperative game theory which can be applied to games where each player's mixed strategy payoff function is defined as an expectation. Current proofs of this Theorem neither justify why this constraint is necessary or satisfactorily identifies its origins. In this Thesis we change this and prove Nash's Theorem for abstract games where, in particular, the payoff functions can be replaced by total orders. The result of this is a combinatoric proof of Nash's Theorem. We also construct a generalised simplicial complex model and demonstrate a more general form of Nash's Theorem holds in this setting. This leads to the realisation Nash's Theorem is not a consequence of a fixed-point theorem but rather a combinatoric phenomenon existing in a much more general mathematical model.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to engage with current debates surrounding contemporary performance, queer theory and the body, which proffer a number of complex and contentious questions. How does queer theory work in practice, and does performance provide the ideal context for such deliberation? How do the subjective essentialisms of performance conflict with ideas of queer performativity and the deconstruction of sexual identity? Drawing upon corporeal and ontological theories of the body in conflict with queer strategic critiques, an attempt is made to articulate a problematically "essential" form of queer subjectivity in performance. By exploring the potential "origins" of a preceding queer practice in the works of Antonin Artaud, Bertolt Brecht and Jean Genet, the work proposes that their approach to theatre and performance articulated and deployed a particularly "deviant" form of expression and aesthetic. They established an approach to theatre and performance, which has continued to inspire and influence anti-essentialist and political forms of queer performance in the new millennium. From the early struggles of lesbian and gay theatre in the politically volatile context of the seventies and early eighties, the thesis foregrounds a liberating yet problematic attempt at enabling a "transformation" in British and North American theatre in response to queer critical paradigms in the nineties. Critical paradigms that are consistently promoted as the unique "product" of a postmodem deconstructive culture, and yet derive much from the works of the early avant-garde, the experiments of the sixties and the subversive texts of post-war British theatre. The nineties have witnessed a proliferation of gay/queer-oriented performance "break through" into the populist mainstream, and the "heteronormative" culture in general. The concluding section focuses upon ideas of a queer corporeality that seeks to remap the significatory potential of the live body in performance, in conflict with discursive inscriptions that attempt to fix and regulate categories of gender and sexuality. Yet, what role does the spectator/audience play in relation to this "activated" queer form of performance? How is the gaze/reception problematised, or does it subvert the very efficacy of queer theory itself?

Abstract:
This thesis is a discourse analysis of six rape trials, with the intention to analyze how the plaintiffs’’ resistance is described. The overall aim is to investigate whether there are forms of resistance that the courts find more desirable and if there are any rules for how resistance should manifest itself. I will also investigate how the rape is itself described by the plaintiff and courts, respectively. I will analyze how this affects the understanding and attitude toward what has happened. My discourse analysis instrument aims to highlight that there are rules that govern the words of the plaintiffs’ testimony during a trial. The discursive analysis that I apply is based on a social constructionist view, which means that there is not an objective truth and thus the language utilized acts to shape reality. In this analysis, I identify something called a “norm of resistance”, which means that courts treat certain forms of resistance preferentially: specifically the plaintiff must be seen to clearly establish her non-consent to the sexual act by her physical resistance. The resistance should have the intention of making the accused stop, and the resistance should also be based on the defendant's behavior. Witnesses in cases where the indictment was upheld are characterized by the plaintiffs providing logical explanations for her actions and resistance. In cases where the indictment was dismissed the plaintiff described something, which I see, as an internal resistance. The internal resistance is characterized by the plaintiff establishing non-consent by being physically passive. Here I would argue that internal resistance makes the plaintiffs' testimony abortive, because they do not follow the rules of legitimate resistance. In the second chapter, I will examine how the "rape" is described in court. In Swedish law, the sexual act is called sexual intercourse. The analysis of the description of sexual acts will show these descriptions to be based on norms of sexual behavior, where passivitvity from the plaintiff during the rape is a sign that the “sexual act” is mutual. When courts label the sexual act as mutual, the act is not seen as violent, but as purely sexual.
