Abstract:
The influence of sermon content on mediaeval secular literature has long been acknowledged. Widening the trail blazed by Gerald Owst in 1933, Siegfried Wenzel has recently identified sermon material in the fabliaux, the drama, the epic, and, very extensively, in the mediaeval lyric.1 Evidence for the usage of sermon formats, however, is considerably harder to develop, although efforts to do so—both brilliant and bizarre—have certainly been attempted.2 Many of the difficulties arise because the homily style in preaching design that had been dominant until the twelth century and remained a viable option especially in the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries was too unique and personalized to the individual sermon giver to be reduced to a scheme. In addition, the more organized pattern of preaching, which today is called “scholastic,” “university-style,” or more correctly “thematic,” vied for prominence with the homily throughout most of the mediaeval period. Only in the fourteenth century, and probably only in England where manuals on thematic design and sermons thus organized flourished, can the effect of a prescribed preaching structure on non-religious writing be easily discerned. Such a discovery occurs when certain unusually-shaped passages in English metrical romance are measured against thematic formats.

Abstract:
Examination of functionality of the genres of religious functional style is a relevant direction of modern linguistic research, which is substantiated by the change of social situation in Russia at the turn of the XX – XXI centuries, and thus, the growing role of religion as a form of public consciousness and a type of human activity. Sermon is a genre that functions in the Russian language, which makes it understandable and influential. The author applies the categorical-textual method, which gives an objective perspective and determines the characterological features of the genre, perceived as a type of similar texts with a standard way of explicating text categories; it also allows identifying the signs of invariant and outlining the transformative trends in the genre of sermon, substantiated by the new communication channels. The sermons delivered during liturgy belong to the core of the genre and feature predominant reverent tone, thematic duality: mandatory spiritual theme, with explication of situational and sacred themes, and reduced explication of profane theme; classical compositional structure, where the main theme is accompanied by spiritual interpretation, comprising a compositional complex, while the situational theme serves for creation of a circular plot. Sermons delivered outside liturgy are attributed to the mediated distant communication, which employs modern media channels: television or Internet, which substantiated a way of explication of textual categories that differs from the invariant. Non-liturgical sermons are classified as periphery of the genre and characterized by prevalence of the preaching, and at times aggressive tone, implementation of profane theme in the text, and reduced role of sacred and spiritual themes. Compositionally, non-liturgical sermons are noted for optional introduction and conclusion, with situational theme, which is explained by usage of modern communication channels. The categorical-textual method allows observing the transformation of the genre of sermon from the core towards the periphery.

Abstract:
Abstract: While accounts of Renaissance rhetoric have recently begun to consider the work of Martin Luther, understanding of Luther's preaching strategies depends on detailed scrutiny of his sermons. A careful investigation of the language of a Luther sermon, in consideration of the rhetorical intent and context in which the work was developed, reveals a speaker striving to engage an audience. As a critical concept more pervasive than traditional notions of elocutio, the paradigmatic concept of "style" offered here draws from Burke and Perelman/Olbrechts-Tyteca to show how rhetorical devices ("figures") advance the argument and how the audience is intended to apprehend the meaning and action ("form") of the discourse. Coherent analysis of contextual, thematic, and structural features of Luther's sermon text shows style a primary rather than derivative feature of rhetorical criticism.

Abstract:
In Sermon studies and their discussion of structure, scholars disagree on how to understand the latter half of the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 6.19–7.12). This section breaks the almost seamless structure of the first half of the Sermon (5.17–6.18). In what follows, I will argue that the latter half of the Sermon displays more structure than is generally acknowledged by Graham Stanton and others and gives us key insights into the overall message of the Sermon. I will argue that the structure of the latter half of the Sermon is marked by internal structuring, thematic consistency and verbal patterning. Matthew's emphasis in this section is on disciples having heavenly priorities while on earth.

Abstract:
References Anikushyna, M. V. Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to provide a practical aid to preachers and teachers in their tasks of proclaiming Hebrews. After suggesting how proclaimers may prepare themselves to read the book, the article summarily explores the major theological themes found throughout Hebrews from the vantage point of how the themes potentially may be related through preaching and teaching. Included in the article is an exploration of some of Hebrews' challenging passages with suggestions of how to address them constructively. Proceeding from the presupposition that the document is sermonic, eschatological, and thoroughly theological, each of these is addressed throughout. The article urges that preaching and teaching done from Hebrews should be intentionally theo-logical and suggests that proclaimers should allow the text to guide the preaching and teaching that they do from it, following the interactive design pattern of exposition-exhortation. Five thematic sections are examined for homiletical insights. Although a verse-by-verse exposition is neither encouraged nor discouraged, preachers and teachers are reminded to make the very point(s) made by the writer of Hebrews and never to allow any personal agenda to take priority over authorial intention. To aid in the task of relevant preaching and teaching, sermon and lesson ideas, as well as supporting contemporary resources, are suggested.

Abstract:
TRUE RELIGION AND STERN MORALITY A thematic-historical analysis of the sermons of Chief Rabbi Tobias Tal (1847-1898) The process of integration of the Jewish community in modern Dutch society was accompanied by a change of Jewish homiletics in both content and form. This article presents the case of the Dutch Chief Rabbi Tobias Tal with the aim of showing how Jewish homiletics changed in the second half of the nineteenth century. Based on an analysis of his sermons, this article argues that Tal successfully combined liberal-protestant ideals and homiletical forms with old Jewish thoughts.

Abstract:
A review of the scholarship on the sources of the Old English Christ III makes it increasingly clear that the poem is related to the homiletic tradition, a term used here to refer to both sermons and homilies. This relationship is apparent in three main ways: first, several long passages directly translate known homilies; second, a number of other passages are homiletic in their hortatory tone and their direct apostrophes to their audiences; and third, the constant rearrangement of biblical material to make specific thematic points suggests that the poet was working from homilies rather than directly from the Bible. One example of this third kind of evidence may be instructive since it has not been specifically noted. In describing how man's former deeds are revealed after the general resurrection, the poet writes: Opene weorþað ofer middangeard monna dæde: ne magun hord wera[s], heortan geþohtas, fore Waldende wihte bemiþan; ne sindon him dæda dyrne, ac Þær bið Dryhtne cuð (lines 1046b-50)

Russell, Kathleen. "Exegesis and the structure of the thematic sermon in Du Fay's Florentine motets." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/8740.

Full text
Abstract:
This study compares two widely diffused genres from the fifteenth century, the motet and the thematic sermon. The analysis of the text, the musical structure, and the mode of Du Fay's three Florentine motets, Mirandas parit, Salve flos, and Nuper rosarum, will reveal connections between the structure of the sermon model and that of the motets. As well, analysis of the motets will reveal the use of certain musical gestures which enhance the meaning of the text and establish thematic connections essential to the effective presentation of a message in the music. The comparison of the motet genre and the sermon model supports the underlying hypothesis of the study, that the intent of the composer was in fact to deliver a message in both the text and the music.

Dissertational work is determined by the formulated objectives and the general logic of the study: from the description of the religious style to the analysis of textual types on the basis of the categorical-textual concept and the identification of specific features of explication of the topic category in Muslim preaching. The first chapter of the main part of the thesis is of a general theoretical nature, the second is devoted to the analysis of explication of the topic category in the texts of the Muslim sermon.

Abstract:
Abstract, Ancrene Wisse, "Guide for Anchoresses" A Czech Translation (2015) Klára Petříková Ancrene Wisse (Guide for Anchoresses) is a remarkable work of the Middle English literature dating back to the first half of the 13th century. Its author (presumably a Dominican) conceived it as "spiritual life guidelines" for three sisters of a noble origin who decided to renounce the world. Besides its didactic purpose, its character is meditative and contemplative. Riveting in its style, its rich metaphors and heightened sensibility link it with the later tradition of the English mystical writers (Julian of Norwich), The work abounds in quotations, paraphrases of the continental monastic authors (St. Augustine, Bernard of Clairvaux). Surviving in seventeen manuscripts, it had been quoted till the Renaissance and its importance is further confirmed by a contemporaneous translation into Latin and French. Present translation aims to introduce this work to the Czech readers and to put it in its historical, social and literary context.

They are a thematic group, concerning the Muslim personality, a call to jihād, and covering colonialism. Most likely they were delivered separately as the tone of the first sermon differs markedly from the hysterical tone of the last two. It is of course possible that the first sermon was delivered together with the others, but as there are no internal indications as to its date, it has been placed separately. The final two sermons are placed chronologically prior to the Declaration of War (text 19). Most probably the release of these sermons on 3 March 2015, as the Nigerian army was defeating Boko Haram and just four days before the amalgamation of Boko Haram with the Islamic State, was designed as a rebuke to Shekau from disaffected elements of the group who wanted to stress the legacy and leadership of Muhammad Yusuf...
