Simons, Penelope. "The theme of education in twelfth- and thirteenth- century French epic and romance." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1990. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3055/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the description of characters' education in twelfth- and thirteenth-century French epic and romance with two broad aims: to establish how education is described, and to suggest reasons why it is portrayed in the particular way that it is. The discussion is divided into three parts. The first provides the contextual framework for the second two, and presents a brief overview of the history of education in the period, together with a survey of the theory and practice of education in school and at home. Critics and historians have noted the link between education and literature and we provide a model of contemporary educational background, theory and practice, against which literary descriptions may be compared and understood. In Part II we analyse these literary descriptions, hitherto not comprehensively explored. Taking a large corpus of works, we examine the content of characters' education, drawing comparisons across genre and timespan, and with the model from Part I. This, together with further examination of where poets draw their inspiration, what they choose to include and how it is presented, provides a context within which particular features, descriptions or texts may be discussed. Part III examines particularly interesting treatments of education. Five different studies of individual works or groups of texts illustrate the range of ways education may function, and help us to establish the status of the education description in Old French literature. We conclude that poets deliberately describe and exploit education in various ways. These range from delineation of character, where we see authors shaping the raw material of narrative for their own ends, to major thematic use, essential for understanding a text. Study of the theme of education reveals its contribution to and reflection of the importance of medieval education and its influence on vernacular literature.

Player, Glen J. "An investigation into a dramatic writing toolset for the creation of a new work of drama." Queensland University of Technology, 2007. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/16394/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this exegesis I have attempted to formulate a primary toolset for dramatic writing that I can apply to create dramatic structure in plays, the chief example being my play Albatross (included herein). This toolset is contingent upon Aristotle's basic tenet of drama, that "tragedy is an imitation of an action" (2002: 10). This exegesis theorises that the work of modern writers on drama such as Spencer, Packard, Catron, Lamott, See, Hicks and many others, fundamentally accords with Aristotle on this point, such that the tools they espouse can collectively be considered a standard set for dramatic writing. Beyond this, my research has led me to believe that there is a primary subset of tools specific to creating dramatic structure. These tools, formulated from dramatic theory, best capture my own way of thinking about my writing practice. I divide them into two types: the first, tools of creation, comprise Theme and Values; Character and their Values; Characters and Action; Character Orchestration and Obstacles; and Event and Significant Change. The second, tools of evaluation, are Passivity; Stakes; and Premise. Together these eight tools have been responsible for creating dramatic structure in the play, Albatross.

Pereira, Débora Alexandra Encarnado. "Wine reputation : are there Differences between red and white wine?" Master's thesis, Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.5/4956.

Abstract:
Mestrado em Marketing
Reputation is a relevant concept in different areas and to different subjects such as personalities, organizations, products and countries (Bromley, 2001). Adjusting existing theory to wine sector, we justify this research with this product’s importance to Portugal’s economy. Therefore we identified the need for understanding existing differences in wine consumption and perception using the Corporate Character Scale (Davies, Chun, Da Silva, & Roper, 2004). Because human values unify the assorted interests of all sciences concerned with human behaviour (Schwartz, 1992), we assessed the relationship between respondents’ values and their associations to wine. With that purpose we used a quantitative approach with a convenience sampling method (non probabilistic), and collected 107 usable questionnaires from wine consumers. We concluded that red wine is not thought to have higher quality than other types of wine or even to taste better, particularly among elder respondents. About money spent per bottle, in average, it is not related to the type of wine people prefer. White wine is not considered a lady’s wine. Nowadays we cannot relate women’s identification with the sense of freedom and wine consumption. Being an adventurer and self-confident is not related to white wine preference.

Tsai, Kuan-Chun. "How children's use of knowledge about the structure of Chinese characters helps them learn novel characters." Thesis, Institute of Education (University of London), 2002. http://eprints.ioe.ac.uk/7513/.

Full text
Abstract:
The main organising feature of Chinese characters is the structure of ideophonetic compound characters. In this structure, two components are identified: a semantic radical and a phonological component, which provide essential information for meaning category and pronunciation. Recent research has shown that knowledge of this structure is involved in the reading and writing processes of Chinese readers. This study investigated children's knowledge of the structure in their learning of novel characters. A structualist model of learning was proposed in this study: learners learn the structure, which underlies the Chinese characters and apply this knowledge generally to new characters with the same structure. This hypothesis was tested using a learning paradigm where 480 children, in grades 2-5 (aged 7-10) in Taiwan were asked to learn pseudo characters in a series of experiments. In Studies 2 and 3, the children were given two types of pseudocharacters, sensible (which followed the structure of ideophonetic characters) and nonsensical (which violated the structure). The effect of visual complexity of the stimuli was controlled. The results showed that the children in all four grade levels learned sensible stimuli significantly better than nonsensical ones. In Studies 4 and 5, the children were given the pseudocharacters that embedded different degree of regularity in relation to the semantic and phonological aspects of the structure of ideophonetic compounds. The regularity was defined as two levels of semantic transparency (transparent vs. opaque) and two levels of phonological regularity (regular vs. irregular). The results showed that the children learned significantly more semantic radicals when those radicals provided transparent semantic information than when they were opaque. The children also learned more phonological components when those components were regular than when they were irregular. With the two regular phonological principles, by derivation and by analogy, there was no difference between the two types of principles in children's learning. These findings were independent of the response modes in the experiments: this was true both when the children were asked to write down the characters they had learned and to identify the characters and read them. It is concluded that children use the knowledge about the main structure underlying the Chinese writing system in learning new characters. The semantic radicals and phonological components both play a significant role in children's knowledge of ideophonetic characters. The children use the phonological principles of both derivation and analogy equally well in their learning of new characters.

This study analyzes the development of the major characters in Fowles's novel - Charles, Sarah, and Sam - in terms of the heroic quest motif. Using the basic pattern of the heroic quest, the monomyth, that Joseph Campbell sets forth in his The Hero with a Thousand Faces, I attempt to show that Fowles's novel may best be understood as the story of three separate heroic quests whose paths cross rather than as the story of a single hero or heroine. This reading seems to account best for all elements of the novel and to explain best the final positions of the characters in question as well as providing a rich appreciation of the novel's wealth of imagery.

Abstract:

Since 9/11, the repercussions of religious intolerance have reached center stage, highlighted by religious hate crime statistics, governmental policies, and documented cases of increased anxiety. Religious illiteracy is also highlighted as a phenomenon across the American landscape. Conceptual arguments hold that knowledge of other religions can promote religious tolerance through intercultural discourse and understanding, elements of a proper civic education. Beyond a practical gap between religious intolerance in the United States and the educational measures taken to resolve the issue, little empirical evidence exists concerning teaching about religion in public education.

These gaps elicited the main research question of this study: What are the implications of teaching about religion to sixth grade students at a public charter school who learn about religion through the Core Knowledge Sequence? Two subquestions subsequently arose during data collection: (a) What practices and strategies are utilized by teachers and administrators to prepare for and implement a unit on religion? (b) What perceptions do students, teachers, and administrators have on the interplay between teaching about religion and character education?

I conducted a single, descriptive case study of a sixth grade class engaged in a history unit on Judaism and Christianity at a school that utilized the Core Knowledge Sequence to answer these questions. Daily character education lessons were also integral to the school curriculum and were included in the case. Through a combination of observations during both instructional and noninstructional periods, interviews with students, teachers, and administrators, and collection of pertinent documents related to the unit and school environment, I illustrated the case with rich, thick description. Data analysis began concurrently with data collection through open coding, with patterns identified. Further open and axial coding collapsed patterns into categories before three themes emerged that informed the presentation of the data findings and interpretations of the study: promoting understanding, maintaining respect, and preparing for the future. Potential recommendations based on findings were reflected in a theoretical model for a school and included increasing and tailoring professional development, implementing inquiry-based learning (IBL) strategies with the C3 framework, and fostering a respectful school and classroom environment through character education. As a primarily exploratory study, these findings served to augment the empirical literature on religion and public education for further research.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)- Stellenbosch University, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In fulfilment of the degree of Magister in Creative Writing: Afrikaans, a novel titled Sirkus (Circus) is presented in which the main character figures as an idiot. It is accompanied by a perspicacious formal essay which maintains the relationship between theory and novel. The essay titled "Die idioot: spieël en skadu" (The idiot: mirror and shadow) reflects on the problematics concerning the representation of the idiot in literary texts. The essay investigates the phenomenon of the idiot in literature according to well-known literary texts presenting idiots. What these texts have in common is that the narrator acts on behalf of a character who does not have the ability nor the will to narrate himself. The problematics is viewed from a thematic as well as writing technique niveaux, according to insights gleaned from literature, philosophy, narratology and psychology. The argument concludes by reflecting on the responsibility of the author and the ethics of creating an effigy of the idiot. The novel Sirkus, (Circus), focuses on an idiot character with webbed hands and feet, Siegfried Landman. It is an exposition of his journey to hell starting on a farm in the Karoo. It takes him through a grotesque urban landscape where he eventually ends up in a circus of freaks. The text starts with the death of Siegfried's father and is in the form of a quest narrative, a quest for the vague image of his uncle Fischer. The tale emanates predominantly from Siegfried's consciousness. During the course of the text he is accompanied by varioius travelling companions who each fmd a voice in the text.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates the impact that a musical score can have on the visual component as well as the final product of a film. This is achieved by the use of a systematic analytical approach that covers the most important aspects of the visual and musical elements within Vertigo. The film is regarded as one of cinema’s greatest examples of excellence. The many levels of meaning, inspired use of cinematographic techniques, meticulously crafted narrative and dynamic score combine to create a film unlike any other. The analysis of Vertigo is achieved by selecting specific scenes that contain important visual and musical elements essential to the narrative. The visual and musical aspects of each scene are analysed separately before the relationship between them is studied. Following this, the results of the analysis are summarised within the larger context of the narrative and conclusions are drawn regarding the music’s influence on the visual aspects of the film as well as its role in the ultimate narrative success of Vertigo.

The text brings the analysis of aspects of the literary discourse as the processes of construction of the scenes and the magical universe, in which the narratives of Marina Colasanti are realized, having as it shows the tales of the works Doze reis e a moca no labirinto do vento (2006): "The woman ramada", Uma ideia toda azul (2006): "Beyond the frame", "Between the leaves of green ó" and "Yarn after yarn". The general and specific objectives are to highlight and distinguish the encompassing and generic scenes present in the narratives, to identify the nature of the verbal sign in its relation to the nonverbal sign, and to analyze intertext resources, paratext, among others, as an artistic procedure. The narrative plans are approached, in which the characters are realized mimically, starting from the initial assumption formulated by Dominique Maingueneau. Non-verbal language is an invitation to read verbal language and vice versa. Both are associated with the signs that are constructed through the textual writing: loom and fabric. They can be seen now either explicitly or implicitly, and put in the service of a power that is realized by the act of reading. Thus, in the narrative text, there are traces of a speech in which the text is staged.

Naidoo, Rajasverrie. "R.K. Narayan's Malgudi novels : a critical study of theme and character." Thesis, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/9163.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses critically theme and character in the fourteen novels of R.K. Narayan, written between 1935 and 1990, and it assesses their importance in Narayan's Indian world view. It evaluates Narayan's depiction of Indian middle class society in the comic-ironic mode. His skills as a narrator who experiments with various narrative techniques are examined. The thesis traces the development of Narayan's fictional town, Malgudi, and illustrates how it reflects changes on the Indian sub-continent and how they impact on the Malgudi character. The themes of parental love, the conflict between orthodoxy and modernity, academic disillusionment, harmony in family relationships and Hindu astrology are examined in Swami and Friends (1935) and The Bachelor of Arts (1946). Narayan's portrayal of orthodox and modern concepts of marriage is appraised in The Dark Room (1938), The English Teacher (1946) and The Painter of Signs (1976). This thesis examines the deterioration of marital harmony and Savitri' s portrayal as the typical Hindu housewife cast in the Pativrata tradition in The Dark Room. In The English Teacher this thesis evaluates Krishnan and Susila's idyllic marriage and the couple's psychic communication when Susila dies. Raman and Daisy's proposed Gandharva marriaqe is reviewed in The Painter of Signs. This study assesses Narayan's treatment of the themes of religious faith, Hinduism and Gandhian ideology in Waiting for the Mahatma (1955), The Guide (1958) and The Vendor of Sweets (1967). Raju' s transformation from a jailbird to a swami is evaluated in The Guide. The dedication of Gandhists such as Bharati and Sriram in Waiting for the Mahatma, is reviewed. In A Tiger for Malgudi, Narayan's innovative talking tiger, Raja, is examined as well as his treatment of the concepts of reincarnation and the transmigration of souls. The deleterious effects of materialism are highlighted in The Financial Expert in which Margayya is obsessed with accruing large sums of money. Srini vas and Sampath' s desire to achieve fame and fortune is explored in the filming of the Burning of Kama in Mr Sampath. This thesis ends with an exploration of the conflict between orthodoxy and modern lifestyles, and the cyclical nature of life in The World of Nagaraj (1990).

A response to a complex process of Indoctrination' (1996: 16).The response can be a reaction depending on whose interests the issue is considered. The Ndebele novelist finds himself caught in the crossfire between two great traditions. He tries to be true to his background while still having to do justice to his newly acquired skill of graphically presenting his thoughts, feelings, and experiences He is a Victim of socio-political systems bent on giving education which moulds the mind to built-in- choices. Both poilitical eras use the printed word to further their ideologies . The Ndebele novelist finds himself having to remould his artistic genius if he is to fit in. In the process the goals of novelistic practice are missed. The novel will not communicate effectively since it has to answer to particular external forces. These forces derive,' ... from the urge of power to protect itself, to perpetuate itself, to prevail' (Chiwome 1996 :22). On the threshold of the two eras, the novel becomes a political statement. It Is this political aspect of the novel which continues to create what Chiwome (1996) has called creative timidity and mediocrity.

The goals of this study were to explore the effects of the theme and presentation of picture books on character learning and story comprehension of kindergarten children. Previous studies reported the effect of story presentation, such as multimedia, on children’s story comprehension. Besides, character teaching methods, such as computer assistant instruction, have been shown to affect children’s character learning. Would presentation and theme of picture books have any effects on character learning and story comprehension of children? Few studies have assessed these effects on the same group of kindergarten children. Both nature and imaginative picture books were used and the ways of story presentation were as follow: (1) a live person telling the story, (2) a computer presenting pictures and pre-recorded contents of the story, and (3) a CD playing the pre-recorded contents of the story. Kindergarten children (n = 55), were divided into three groups of story presentation and listen to a story in three weeks, with six sessions (twice a week), each 20 minutes. Children listened to the imaginative story first, then the nature story. In addition, there was a control group only participating the character assessment but not listening to any stories. The results indicated: (1) character learning: compared with the control group, the experimental groups showed significant pre- and post-test differences, especially the imaginative story. The different presentation groups performed similarly. (2) story comprehension: the live-person story-telling group performed significantly better story comprehension than other groups, similar pattern was shown for both nature and imaginative stories. Results of this study demonstrated that the short-term story teaching can improve children’s character-learning ability, but this facilitative effect is related to the theme of story and not greatly affected by the story presentation. For the story comprehension, a live-person telling story is the better way to help the children understanding a story than computer and audio CD.

Abstract:
The study makes an analysis of Charles Mungoshi's Shona works from a Modernist perspective. In this study, Modernist literature is shown as full of change and adventure that has seen characters failing to catch up with the speed at which their social lives are going. The change is continuos and has resulted in many characters continuously failing to cope, which in turn has resulted in continuous frustrations, here described as despair. The study also shows how the despair is being nurtured in the circumstances of crumbling social institutions which, in the past, had acted as the haven for devastated individuals. The crumbling social institutions are shown to be triggering the despair and the characters are given no room to recuperate. The study makes an analysis of what brings this despair and how in the end, particular individual characters fight to ward off the despair.

Abstract:
This investigation looks on how Setswana short story writers depict female characters in short stories as compared to their male counterparts. Four methods are employed in this study, namely: definition, interpretation, comparison and classification, to cast light on the problems of depiction of female characters. An adapted narratological model was considered most suitable for this study. In this model, when content is discussed, topic is emphasized, when plot structure is analysed, theme is highlighted and when style is examined, atmosphere is of paramount importance. Vital concepts related to the portrayal of female characters are (a) author, (b) text structure, (c) character, (d) womanism and (e) feminism. Discussions of the concept of the author tend to fall into two groups, namely: the real author and the author of the text. This second group, is also subdivided into three classes, which are biolographical, implied and abstract authors. The author as a person is the originator of the events, which are obviously related to the depiction of female characters. A biographical author is connected to real events, which are then used to describe female characters. An abstract author in this study is taken to mean the same as an implied author, because both types of voice disclose the information of the real author in the depiction of female characters. This information is the events through which female characters are portrayed in Setswana short stories. The structure of the text is examined as divided into three strata, namely: content, plot structure and style. Content is discussed as the events which will make up the plot have not been arranged by the author yet, that is are there before the text is written. This content layer has four elements, namely: events, characters, time and space, which are united into one unit by the topic. This topic controls all these elements. Plot structure is then the way in which the author as originator of the events arranges them. In the plot structure the four elements of the content are allocated different functions which revolve around one theme only. Analysis of plot structure is very important because it is where events related to female characters are arranged. Style is defined as a way in which an author uses language to expose his female characters when writing his short stories. The short story is divided in this study into two major types, namely: stories that simply inform and stories that entertain. Description of both types of short stories is given equal attention because the portrayal of female characters in many Setswana short stories is the aim of this examination. Character is the next concept examined in this study. Characters can be any of four types, namely: (a) content characters, (b) plot structure characters, (c) flat characters and (d) round characters. Content and plot structure characters differ in function in the plot. The distinction between flat and round characters lies in the manner in which they are described. These distinctions are important because this research focuses on female characters in the presentation selected Setswana short stories. Female characters can be portrayed by the author himself/herself, the narrator, the character himself/herself and/or by other characters. In these Setswana short stories female characters are usually portrayed as having no rights, which reflect all the mistakes made by people though not admitted by society in general. The portrayal of female characters can be approached using several categories, namely: womanism, experimental phase and feminism. Thus, analysis of selected Setswana short stories unravels how Setswana short story writers depict female characters, whether as womanists, women of the experimental phase or as feminists. Thus, this study divides the selected Setswana short stories into three groups, namely: stories of phase of womanism, stories of experimental phase and stories of phase of feminism, to find out whether depiction of female characters belong to only one of these three themes or to more than one. Stories of phase of womanism The study gives an investigation of womanism: Distinguishing characteristics related to womanism are: -- oppression and ill-treatment of female characters; -- discrimination and segregation of female characters; -- ignorance of female characters; -- the fact that female character should be beaten when they have done something wrong; and -- restriction of the role of female characters to taking care of their own families and the extended family. Setswana short story writers who write about womanism include Chikane ('Mafaratlhatlha a botshelo'and 'Sego sa metsi'), Magoleng and Ntsime ('Khutsana and 'Lerato le eseng lona'), Shole ('Seteropo ke sa gago' and 'Tlogela ngwanake'), Malope ('Le fa o ka e buela lengopeng…' and 'O nkutlwe') and Sikwane ('MmaModiegi'). These short story writers portray female characters living traditional lives even through events which address the issues of feminism. This vividly indicates that although life changes, women`s lives remain static, according to these Setswana short story writers. Stories of phase of feminism Feminism is the next concept explored by this study. The outstanding features which have been discovered in feminism attempts to: -- eradicate oppression of female characters; -- fight for equality amongst women and men in all spheres of life; -- remove segregation of and discrimination against female characters; and -- change the whole society. Setswana short story writers whose work explores the above aspects include Sikwane ('MmaModiegi'), Shole ('Seteropo ke sa gago' and 'Tlogela ngwanake’), Chikane ('Sego sa metsi') and Malope ('Bodiba jo bo jeleng ngwana `a mmaago…' and 'O nkutlwe'). These short story writers emphasize a change in the lives of female characters, describing the fight for equality for all so that each person becomes liberated. Stories of experimental phase Finally, this study examines the experimental phase which shares with both womanism and feminism. Setswana short story writers of the experimental phase intertwine these two approaches when they write their short stories. Features that are identified in both womanism and feminism are: -- the freedom of female characters; -- the liberation of the whole society; -- agreement on marriage and -- working together as a team to solve the problems of society. Malope is shown to be a Setswana short story writer who mixes womanism and feminism. What Malope stresses is that often female characters do not know where they stand, whether they belong to womanism or feminism, and so they end up living a double life.

The present thesis emphasizes how to apply Theme-Based Approach to implement junior high school students’ character education in Taiwan’s EFL classroom through the case with Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Based on teaching English as Foreign Language (EFL) itself, English teachers have to understand the importance of helping students integrate and master the four skills of English – reading, writing, listening and speaking. However, it argues that the four competencies should not be merely a key to getting good grades in all kinds of exams, nor should the four competencies be the final goal of learning English. Instead, English can be regarded as an efficient communicative tool for language learners to be exposed to knowledge, information and a variety of messages. It should also be a powerful means for communication and problem-solving. Therefore, the present study establishes the theoretical background and pedagogical applications related to the concept that the four skills should be integrated into a well-designed curriculum through a specific theme in order to make communication effective. Furthermore, this thesis will discuss how to inspire students to have effective communication by providing them with a useful series of integrated activities. In addition, the importance of character education has become one of the heated issues that has been emphasized and discussed during recent decades. Parents are expectantly hoping that teachers, school and the authorities might create an effective atmosphere in building children’s character. Under the similar circumstances, teachers are eagerly searching for efficient ways to stress the importance of character education. Hence, the present study introduces the theoretical background and pedagogical applications of Theme-Based Approach (TBA) and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Moreover, the purpose of this thesis is to combine a communicative Theme-Based Approach with the theme of character education through Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to broaden students’ background regarding character education, and furthermore, develop their communicative skills such as self-expression, organization, logical thinking and cooperation. This research provides a series of teaching plans and worksheets based on communicative Theme-Based Approach in a class of 24 gifted 8th graders in Ming Dao High School, a reputable private high school located in Taichung, Taiwan. To carry out my teaching belief in communicative approach, the tasks are provided with a series of worksheets after teaching lessons in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. During the practice of different tasks, students not only get enhanced in writing, reading, listening and speaking competences, but also realize the importance of character education. Most importantly, students can put the concept of practicing character education into practice in their daily life. In the end, as for the issue on designing a teaching plan, this thesis especially emphasizes the importance of motivation in order to build up a student-centered learning environment and arouse students’ learning motivation. The factors of motivation are added into the worksheets and activities in order to expect them to learn effectively and learning for fun with the ten effective methods provided in Chapter Five.

It is the instinct of human beings to avoid evil. The ancient Chinese people are looking for good fortune and fortune. In the creation of jewelry, they add auspicious animal shapes and auspicious patterns and symbols to seek for the good fortune. At present, the jewelry and accessories designed for the application of avoid evil. After interviewing, I found a conclusion, mostly with the image of gossip, symbols, Chinese style and bionics as elements of conceptual imagination. No numerology is used as a research topic. Therefore, this study uses numerology as a research topic, collated by expert interviews, and uses Peirce and Saussure's "symbolic theory" theory. A symbolic element that subclasses the sixty Jiazi of Yijing, corresponding to the phenomenon of nature applied to design. In the end, the five combinations of "Jiawu, Yiwu, Bingchen, Dinghai, and Jiuqi" are used as the elements of creation to complete the innovative design of numeracy jewelry. This study finds that the characteristics of the Yijing eight-character are different from the traditional eight-character, which makes the design more broad and is no longer limited to a few symbols such as Taiji and Gossip. The basis of life-study application reflects the social environment and the culture of life-study, the principle of change in thinking of heaven, people and land. These designs can bring new innovative ideas to the art jewelry that is shipped from domestic numerology.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the treatment of mental disability in Canadian literature. Literature reflects the perceptions and practises of the culture of which it is a part. Radical changes have been made in recent years in the thinking about persons with mental handicaps. The issue of whether the changes are reflected in literature prompted the writing of this thesis. Little is known about characters labelled as mentally disabled in non-didactic, Canadian Literature. They are not commonly discussed in the academic journals of Canadian Literature and Education. The purpose of this thesis was to get to know ten of the above characters. The following questions were drawn from issues in the academic literature regarding mental disability. All seven questions were applied to each character in turn. (1) Label? (2) Personal relationships? (3) Thoughts and feelings? (4) Choices? (5) Daily activity? (6) Relationship with service providers? (7) Personal assets and abilities? Short story characters: Benny Parry, "The Time of Death," Munro, 1968; Dolores Boyle, "Dance of the Happy Shades," Munro, 1968; Kelvin, "Circle of Prayer," Munro, 1986; Neddy Baker, "Hello Cheeverland, Goodbye," Findley, 1984; Stella Bragg, "Bragg and Minna," Findley, 1988. Characters from novels: Francis Cornish, "What's Bred in the Bone," Davies, 1985; John-Gustav Skandl, "What the Crow Said," Kroetsch, 1978; Lotte, "Not Wanted on the Voyage," Findley, 1984; Rowena Ross, "The Wars," Findley, 1977; Tehmul Lungraa, "Such a Long Journey," Mistry, 1991. Findings indicated that Canadian literature is not yet reflecting the new movement to develop full personhood. Most characters were limited in the choices they made. A variety of labels were used. Little was said about what the characters think or feel. No characters were married, had children, or a job. Most of the characters had a personal relationship with another character.

The development of the wedding industry changes with each passing day. From the package period 1990, the custom period 2000, the cultural creation period 2005, the minimally invasive period 2015 to the present 2019, the wedding photography industry keeps transforming stably. To cope with the upgrading consumer demand for the need of marriage, the intelligent, diversified and interactive digital photography technology, we witnesses the mainstream wedding photography service switched from traditional one-stop service to the more refined and customized service industry. Each marrying couples want to bring something novel to their dress and photography. With the trend of constant economic downturn and the aging demographic structure, the wedding industry is facing more and more serious challenges. The overall wedding market is shrinking dramatically in Taiwan and the peer competition within the industry (is) turning more and more fierce. However, even with the number of birth hits its 8-year low, and the marriage logarithm the lowest in 9 years, there are still 135,403 couples managed entering marriage. To stand out from a crowd in a radically competing market, continuous innovation becomes a must. Research and development, promotion of uniqueness, featured photography, fashion wedding dresses, brand wedding dresses, and themed wedding dresses have all become indispensable parts of the wedding dress industry. Consumers are hypercritical ordering exclusive wedding dresses. Original styles and techniques are constantly introduced. Elements like flower totems, gorgeous crystals, butterflies, rainbows, clouds, and furs are one after another captured into the styles of designers-- each of which highlights an independent personal style to subvert strong fashionable sense of the wedding dress. Wedding and baptism are the only surviving Christianity rituals retained after the Reformation. They are, and must be, covenants to life. Each Bible story has a story that exhorts and motivates upwards. Managing marriage still retains something with mysterious scare and beauty in Bible. In addition to the romantic and gorgeous materials, this study concentrates on combining wedding theme dresses with the female characters in Bible. Through characteristics of each female persona in the Bible, the authors recollect and recreate each names and stories and images these female represent and to integrate them into the new generation of wedding dress design.

The combination of plots, characters, and themes has made the literary genre of the novel a complete structure in the Tang Dynasty. The novels of the Tang Dynasty profoundly influenced the literary creations of later generations, and also reflected the spatial field and cultural features of the time. The common characters in the text can use the space to construct a vivid image, the feeling of energy saving conveys turning message through the space setting, the theme can be expressed through the spatial field, and the surreal space beyond the rule of thumb becomes the author of the Tang Dynasty novel. However, the design, placement, and flow of space are intriguing. How is the character image shaped in the composition of space scenes? How does character and life experience play a role in space writing? Is the plot development driven by what kind of arrangement of space scenes? How does the episode turning message hint to be read from the spatial field? Can the theme of the novel be presented through the humanities and social aspects of space? How can even the inner spiritual space of the author be translated in front of the reader in the form of his world, dreams, and fantasy? Therefore, this study started with space theory and narrative theory, and used text analysis to find out the spatial status of Tang novels. In the novel text composed of plots, characters, and themes, how does the spatial field play its role? Present its meaning. The first chapter of this article will describe the research motives, advance research and research methods. The second chapter will analyze the relationship between the plot promotion and space setting of the novels in the Tang Dynasty. The third chapter explores how the space metaphorizes the characters in the novel. The fourth chapter then explores the role and significance of the spatial field in the performance of the theme of the novel. In chapter 5, we find out the grotesque, ridiculous and unreasonable hyper-reality space in the novel and discover what kind of reality is behind the different space. life. Therefore, it will be learned that the spatial field has a great role and significance for the plots, characters, and themes of the novel, and is no longer just a neutral existence. Regardless of whether it is a natural, social or spiritual space field, these three people always infiltrate each other in the creation of the Tang Dynasty novels. They are mutual cause and effect, and are mutually representative. They not only build a three-dimensional, rich sense of space, but also become more transparent. It reveals the deep inner cultural implication of the novel.

Magapa, Ntepele Isaac. "PM Lebopa : Papetso ya Dikanegelotseka tsa Lebopa (Sepedi)." Diss., 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/30554.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation Lebopa' s two short stories entitled Ntlo ya monna yo mongwe and Bomahlwabadibona are compared with each other. Groenewald is the first person to have pointed out the importance of these two detective short stories. By doing this he also pointed out the importance of Lebopa as a Sepedi author. The named two short stories have never been examined comprehensively. It was therefore decided that they would be compared to each other in this study. The study begins with a description of the concept 'detective story'. Stewart (1980: 12) states that this type of story deals with an investigator who tries to unravel a mystery. The Boileau - Narcejac and Groenewald classifications of these types of stories also receive attention. The Groenewald classification is used in this dissertation. Strachan and Mojalefa's opinion that a literary work consists of three levels forms the basis of the model used to analyse the short stories. Mojalefa refers to these three levels as 'content level', 'structure level' and 'style level'. 'Topic' and 'theme' are two basic concepts in this investigation. 'Topic' is relevant on a content level while 'theme' is important on a structure level'. The two stories were not analysed stylistically. The content of a text consists of four elements, namely characters, events, time and space, and the study of content concentrates on these four elements. Two main figures who are involved in a conflict with each other are identified in the investigation. The events are divided into three categories. The first category contains basic events and is exclusively determined by the topic. The second and third categories respectively contain relevant and coincidental events. The 'time' concept is subdivided into 'point of time' and 'lapse of time'. 'Place' includes amongst other things, 'geographic', 'socio-cultural' and 'symbolic place'. The analysis of the structural level relies heavily on the 'mini-framework' concept which involves the microstructure of a work. Attention is devoted to the title. Hereafter the investigation focused on the different parts of the structure i.e. the exposition, the development, the climax and the resolution. The structural analysis concentrates mainly on the author's use of literary techniques. The concept 'technique' is defined and the following techniques from Ntlo ya monna yo mongwe and Bomahlwabadibona are identified and discussed: repetition, shifting, frequency, dramatic irony, omission, focus, complication and deceit. The investigation is a functional analysis and not a taxonomic one, which means that the ways in which the techniques function also receive attention. The comparison between the two short stories reveals that they belong to two different kinds of detective stories. In Ntlo ya monna yo mongwe the unravelling of the mystery receive the most attention. In Bomahlwabadibona those events which gradually expose the cruelty of the antagonist and which deal with his punishment are most prominent. This is in accordance with Dresden and Vestdijk's description of the English and American detective story respectively. The positions of Ntlo ya monna yo mongwe and Bomahlwabadibona in relation to the rest of the Sepedi narrative genre is then precisely indicated. The concluding chapter is a summary. At the end of this chapter a brief allusion is made to Dresden and Vestdijk's opinion that the detective story is a modern fairytale.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to discover to what extent and in what way Peterson and Seligman’s (2004) twenty-four character strengths are present in Winnie the Pooh storybooks, and how they are depicted. Character strengths are a well-known theory in positive psychology and the analysis of children’s literature is a respected genre. A qualitative examination of the text was conducted using content and thematic analyses to extract examples of the strengths. The exemplars were coded and recoded before being subjected to a peer and supervisor review. The excerpts indicated that all strengths are depicted in the text, but Pooh is the only character to exhibit them all. A discussion of the findings revealed that no single strength could be deemed more prominent as they are intrinsically interconnected. It is recommended that the findings be reworked into a training manual for guardians to foster character strengths in young children.

The Thesis about the Creation of Non-written Abstract The thesis aims at studying the artistic aesthetic of modeling in Chinese characters, abandoning the normal manifestation with flat style of Calligraphy, and using the technics of molding and carving on solid ceramic body to present the elegance of Chinese Characters. Abstract:
The diploma thesis deals with the profile of fiction published in the magazine Lada on the turn of the nineteenth century into the twentieth. The chosen representative sample of six volumes stretching over the period of twenty years was thoroughly analyzed, focusing on the most important aspects of the individual prosaic contributions, which are the following: the theme, both the main and the supporting characters, the plots, the time and space dimension of the stories, the autor's style, the tuning of proses and their belonging to different artistic movements. Another perspective of interest to this project is the author's background, its changes over time and its influence on the overall orientation and appearance of the magazine, with the overall characteristics of it also included. The deeper, intellectual background reflected in the individual proses is also discussed. Given the fact that the publishing timeline extends over two different historical epochs, this final thesis strives to find answers to the question of to which extent the author's thinking was influenced by the historically social context, i.e. to what degree the authors adopt the modern, progressive ideas of the newly shaping society of the twentieth century, and conversely, to what extent both their opinions and thinking are...

With the changes of the systems in our society in the modern international communities, many countries have joined the line of competition in manufacturing, creating a stronger contest in trade and as a result caused many businesses in Taiwan to leave the country, opt for closing down or even in facing bankruptcy. In this contest, all industries are trying to create a distinguishing feature that defines their product. Since Taiwan is currently facing great pressure from market competitors such as Mainland China, South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong, finding a suitable market for the product during the design processes, becomes an urgent topic that all industries in Taiwan are eager to study at this stage. Handbag business is without exception in need for such study. The establishment of a product image is an urgent matter for all kinds of businesses; and how to create a product image taking into account the existing consumer preferences, thereby finding a new design model, direction and strategy in order to compete with other brands in the international market, is an important measure in this research writing, while establishing a product image is also creating a new aesthetic style which would express the purposes of visual communications design. In this writing, 3 types of subject matters and creative methods will be used to convey images on handbag materials. 1. Design of floral imageries 2. Design of symbolic imageries 3. Design of lines and geometric shapes Apart from plain fabrics, PVC and leather, these 3 types of themes are the most commonly used imageries on handbag materials. The reason for choosing these themes as directions for the creative design is their ability to create strong product image. In order to demonstrate the frequency on the appearances of these themes on handbag materials, a study on the images of a few popular brands in the market is included in this writing. Furthermore, taking into account the fact that the final presentation of the images will be made on leather or fabrics, it will be considered in the design techniques to make use of the following means of presentations: 1. Imagery output 2. Textile 3. Printing And these 3 themes will extend to 3 main topics: 1. Fun in the blooms – forming new floral images suitable for handbags by distorting, overlapping and rotating the original pictures or graphics of flowers or even changing their existing colours. 2. Amongst the words – creating a new form of logo patterns on jacquard fabrics by editing words, or using postmodern techniques to break apart or rearrange the order of the letters or words. 3. Interweaving and overlapping – creating new images by altering the lines and geometric shapes. Put rhythm into them and bring out a variation of unevenness, patches or layers. The 3 main topics could provide a concept for the creative design of handbag materials and could also be used as a reference to the design of handbag imageries. Keywords: Handbag material, Handbag material imageries, Jacquard fabrics, Brand, Logo, Post-Modernism.

Abstract:
The thesis is focused on construction of Czech national identity in press (MF DNES January - June 2010). It describes this complex problem in the way of discourse analysis. Therefore, there is not used special or particular research method, because the subject of matter is approached and thought by ontological and epistemological assumptions behind it. The objective of the work is find system, which characterizes construction of Czech national identity, Czech patriotism and Czech character. There must be emphasized that it is not providing absolute answers to the specific problem, but enable us to understand the conditions behind it. First of all, there is shown thinking about Czech national identity from the historical point of view. There are described presumptions of Czech identity and character from the times of Karel Čapek and Tomáš G. Masaryk. Secondly, there is shown contemporary discourse through the study of different levels of the media text, the concepts of Teun van Dijk or Jack Lule are involved.

Cooper, Lucille. "Is there a woman in the text? : a feminist exploration of Katherine Mansfield's search for authentic selves in a selection of short stories." Diss., 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2410.

Full text
Abstract:
Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923), British Modernist writer whose search for authentic selves in the lives of the characters in her short stories, is reflected in her innovative style of writing in which she examines the interior consciousness of their minds. Mansfield questions the inauthentic lives of the characters, revealing that the roles they play are socially imposed forcing them to hide their true selves behind masks. The stories which have been chosen for this study focus on women characters (and men also) who grapple with societal prescriptions for accepted actions, and are rendered mute as a result. The women characters include all age groups and social classes. Some are young and impressionable (The Tiredness of Rosabel, The Little Governess and The Garden Party), others are married and older (Bliss, Prelude and Frau Brechenmacher attends a wedding ), while there are also middle-aged women in Miss Brill and The Life of Ma Parker.

Brink, Malie Johanna. "Storie en sprokie : 'n ondersoek na die sprokiesmotief in enkele populere Afrikaanse romans." Diss., 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/15991.

Abstract:
Text in Afrikaans
In the dissertation the manifestation of the fairytale motif in the texts, Griet skryf 'n sprokie by Marita van der Vyver (1992), and Weerkaatsings 'n sprokie by Eleanor Baker (1984) is investigated. The purpose is to ascertain the manner in which this "child-centred" genre is transformed on the literary level of the adult reader. To achieve this goal, a conceptualization of the fairytale as an epic genre is firstly undertaken. In the exploration of the genre, the search light does not only focus on the Western but also on the indigenous South African fairytale. Secondly, by means of this theoretical framework, a detailed analysis is made of the manifestation of the fairytale motif in the two primary texts. The elements of the fairytale in Griet skryf 'n sprokie and Weerkaatsings - 'n sprokie are highlighted and the handling thereof comparatively investigated

Shaw, Rayford Wesley. "A Structural analysis and visual abstraction of the pictorial in the Aeneid, I-VI." Thesis, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/16021.

Full text
Abstract:
The pictorial elements of the first six books of the Aeneid can be evidenced through an examination of its structural components. With commentaries on such literary devices as parallels and antipodes, interwoven themes, cyclic patterns, and strategic placement of words in the text, three genres of painting are treated individually in Chapter 1 to illustrate the poet's consistency of design and to prove him a craftsman of the visual arts. In the first division, "Cinematic progression," attention is directed to the language which conveys movement and frequentative action, with special emphasis placed on specific passages whose verbal components possess sculptural or third-dimensional traits and contribute to the "spiral" and "circle" motifs, the appropriate visual agents for animation. Depiction of mythological subjects comprises the second division entitled "Cameos and snapshots." Three selections, dubbed monstra, are explicated with such cross references as to illustrate the poet's use of epithets which he distributes passim to elicit verbal echoes of other passages. The final division, "The Vergilian landscape," addresses two major themes, antithetical in nature, the martial and the pastoral. Their sequential juxtaposition in the text renders a marked contrast in mood which is manifested pictorially in the transition from darkness to light. A panoramic chiaroscuro emerges which is the tapestry against which Aeneas makes his sojourn through the Underworld. It is the perfect backdrop to accompany the overriding theme of "things hidden," res latentes, which encompasses a greater part of the epic and becomes the culminant motif of the paintings which comprise the visual presentation. Chapter 2 functions as a catalogue raisonne for art inspired by the Aeneid from early antiquity up to the present day. Such examples of artistic expression provide a continuum with which to appropriate Horace's maxim, ut pictura poesis, in their evaluation. The verbal exegeses in Chapter 1 have been programmed to comport with the thematic content of the visual presentation in Chapter 3, a critique exemplifying the transposition of the verbal to the pictorial. With these canvases I have attempted to render a new perspective of Vergil's epic in the genre of abstract expressionism.
