Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2011.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: When a sailing ship passes a moored ship the moored ship experiences forces and moments. These forces and moments cause the moored ship to move. The resulting ship motions due to the passing ship can sometimes be more severe than the ship motions due to ocean waves and can cause serious accidents at moorings such as the failing of mooring lines or even the total break away of the ship from the berth. Since bulk carriers and tankers were traditionally the largest seafaring ships, passing ship studies have focused mainly o

Over the last few years, due to the fast growing demand, the coal rail network is becoming one of the worst industrial bottlenecks in Australia. Effective maintenance planning is essential and important in any organisation that is responsible for procuring and managing complex assets. In the marine shipping industry maintenance planning is very significant due to its complexity and the obligations on shipping organisations to comply with certain regulations and requirements. Moreover, improper planning can reduce the ship's availability, which may in turn, be reflected in the revenue of the company. Another issue that requires attention in this field is the cost of maintenance, since improper or inadequate planning could result in brea

Abstract:
This research examined gender and employment status (full-time worker or student) differences in perceptions of workplace sexual harassment and incivility. Previous and recent meta-analyses suggested small effects by gender. The current research introduced a method of measuring perceptions by forcing a choice of identifying a behavior as sexual harassment, incivility, or neither. The instrument was designed in this way to determine if small effects existed because males tended to have overlapping definitions of sexual harassment and incivility. Propensity to sexually harass was also measured.

Abstract:
The ability of a production system to complete orders on time is a critical measure of customer service. While there is typically a preferred routing for a job through the processing machines, often an alternative route is available that can be used to avoid bottleneck operations and improve due date performance. In this paper a heuristic approach is given to dynamically select routing alternatives for a set of jobs to be processed in a job shop. The approach is coupled with a job shop scheduling algorithm developed by Hodgson et al. (1998, 2000) to minimize the latest job (Lmax).

This thesis aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of human resource management (HRM) within cruise ship organizations. The cruise ship industry is one of the fastest developing sectors within the tourism industry. Therefore, it should come as little surprise that the demand for seafaring human resources has also grown. Assuming that effective management of crew members is key to the effective operation of cruise ships, the specifics and challenges for HRM in this particular organisational context are identified and analysed as well as the realities of the roles and relations of the ship
