Angelopoulos treated myth as a set of archetypical situations and patterns of conduct constantly reproduced in the history of the world. In this article, I examine the notion of nostalgia in relation to the films of Theo Angelopoulos. I argue that the image of nostalgia that pervades his films does not call for the restoration of the past but rather lends itself to a sense of hope which I approach as an image of utopia. Drawing a line of comparison between Angelopoulos and the Greek poet George Seferis (who had a pivotal role in the shaping of a modern Greek identity and whose images of melancholy were recurrent points of reference for the director), I claim that Angelopoulos’s films are haunted by an image of utopia which is r

The films of Theo Angelopoulos narrate a poetic “new humanism,” and this genius director of the 20th century has left an enduring artistic ‘aura’ in Walter Benjamin’s era of mechanical reproduction through his unique use of long-take narration and internal montage. This paper explores the dialectical relationship between long takes and internal montage in Angelopoulos’ films, as well as how the conflicting arrangement of mise en scène affects the audience’s psyche. This article discusses The Travelling Players (1975), Theo Angelopoulos's provocative film, by upholding the priority the director's audio-visual images assign to the future as what Deleuze calls ‘the pure and empty form of time’. It also argues that The Travelling Players supplements the Deleuzian quartet of crystal-images with a new type of crystal-image: Angelopoulos crafts images of extraordinary consistency that act as filters, splitting and sieving time at once, a kind of audio-visual refinery laid out on the silver screen, with the distillation process dedicated to blocking repression,

This thesis provides a critical enquiry into the films of Theo Angelopoulos. Dividing his films into two periods—the one running through the seventies and the other starting with the advent of the eighties—I will examine the representation of history in the first period of Angelopoulos and the metaphor of the journey in his subsequent films. Furthermore, I will trace the development of an aesthetic based on long takes which evokes a particular sense of time in his films. This aesthetic, which is based on the internal rhythm of the shot, inscribes a temporality where past, present, and future c

The chapter considers Angelopoulos' film criticism for the newspaper Democratic Change during the turbulent but creative pre-dictatorship 1960s.
