Full textIn classical theology, the theme of redemption achieved by christ was always connected with christ's death. But the discovery of the importance of scriptural) sources, a more and more consistent christological reflection and the impluses of the 2nd council of vatican ii have widened the theological perspctives. At the beginning of our century the theology of redemption continued to be almost exclusively concentrated on jesus' death on the cross, interpreted as the sacrifice reconciliating man with god. Other religions first, then the bible, provided theologians with arguments for a sacrificial interpretation of jesus' death. But another approach to the holy writ thanks to the contemporary exegesis makes it clear that jesus' death is not given a unique interpretation in the new testament and that the sacrificial conception is only one among a number of other possible interpretations. The example of the epistle of the hebrews os significant : even though classical theology interprets it as a treatise on christ's sacrifice, modern theology reads it as an evidence that sacrifices have lapsed. Reacting against the sarificial and juridical interpretation of jesus' death the theologians have progressively taken more interest in the behaviour of jesus. Redemption no longer procceds from the cross only, but from the whole person and event of jesus christ. His death is given new interpretations depending on his very life. Jesus reveals the father's face and in his death he shows himself as a servant, man-for-the-others (pro-existent). For modern theologians, figures of the old testament such as the prophet or the servant, are opportunities to find new approaches to the redemption in jesus. At the same time they have realised (as th redactors of the new testament did) that the newness and originality of jesus oblige them to revise continuously the theologicak language. Christ's death epitomizes his life and his message

Full textThis thesis explores Douglas John Hall’s theology of the cross from an ecclesiological perspective. It aims to answer the following question: What ecclesiology does Hall’s theology of the cross suggest? To answer the question, we first survey Hall’s major influences to provide a deeper understanding of his theological concerns. We then identify the cross and context as fundamental methodological underpinnings of his theology of the cross and its ecclesiology. In the same vein, we present the doctrines of God, creation and Christ as theological foundations. Approached from the perspective of a God who suffers, a relational ontology, and a Christ who represents, this thesis highlights a Church that represents, relationally engages itself within its context, and suffers. This Church is called to represent the world to Christ and Christ to the world. It is called to engage in its context rather than attempt to escape its reality. Lastly, it is called to suffer because of its identity and its engagement in its context. This thesis proposes a perspective on the elements of a doctrine of the Church found in the work of Hall.

As a result, his teaching has been suspected of lacking a sacramental perspective. By our analysis of a single poem, "The Fountain" ("La Fonte"), we have endeavoured to find a reply to the question : what is the meeting point between the theology of the eucharist and the mysticism of St John of the Cross ?. .

In order to protect resources and longevity of these regions, communities often adopt sustainable development initiatives with assistance of external support. The goal of this study is to evaluate initiatives taken by similar communities and organizations that have met the needs of ecosystems through sustainable action plans. The combined information gathered in this study will aid St. Croix, USVI in evaluating current practices as well as planning for future actions. The purpose of this research is to develop a case study of local-level sustainable development initiatives for St. Croix, USVI in order to address the needs of community members and environment through evaluations and successful frameworks of similar island communities. Through information collected, an analysis that addresses issues related to improving community for healthier communities via an improved built environment design, will investigate possible forms and systems of successful urban populations. This thesis addresses some of the issues related to improving community design for better civic health outcomes via an improved design and framework policy for the built environment. In order to explore this, the thesis seeks sustainable potentials in urban inner cities and island communities to develop an action plan and design for St. Croix. USVI.

In the first part of this research, we follow the persecutions that Dias Gomes had to face as a left wing intellectual during the authoritarian regime of the Getúlio Vargas and the military dictatorship starting in 1964. In the second part of this research, we focus the pieces written during his early years, from 1942. Then we follow his evolution until the consecration of his theater in 1960. The third part focuses on written documents from the 1960s that represent a set of eclectic works that this genius of the drama has left as a legacy

Full textThe French Red Cross is an association (law 1901) and a non-profit organization, recognized as a public benefit and a wellness and auxiliary to the government. Engaged in a "fight against all human suffering," for over 150 years, the French Red Cross works in four areas of national intervention: relief, health, education and social action, and in an international field. The French Red Cross is also part of a network, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, consisting of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent and in National Societies including the French Red Cross. Social actions of the French Red Cross provided by local bodies, local delegations, must complete the challenge to design a humanitarian emergency assistance. Based on the volunteer, all the humanitarian aid system is based on gifts. What keeps alive every delegation is both material donations received, from individuals and the state, intangible donations received such as time, expertise, volunteers, and finally donations passed from the association to beneficiaries such as food, clothing, mailing address ... The ethnological study presented here as a monograph seeks to examine the system of philanthropy developed by the local delegation of Orange (Vaucluse) in its material and symbolic dimension. Thus, the study will focus on two particular themes : food aid and volunteers, and offer an ethnological analysis, of the gift of food and the relational dynamics of volunteerism

Full textLiving at a crucial time of rome's spiritual evolution, varro was thus a very precious witness for the historians. The crisis of the religious conscience that his country went through, the necessity for the roman authorities to restore the working of the divine institutions had given him the occasion to formulate a coherent doctrine about faith and rites. In particular he endeavoured to reorgaznize in a rational and clear system the extensive matter of the classic polytheism. So he elaborated the famous distinction between a poetic theology, aphilosophical theology and a political theology. But the sabin thinker principally aimed at determining the respective provinces of each great national divinity. In his opinion indeed there was no doubt that the remedy for the state's decadence could only be metaphysical. By introducing into the ruling classes the belief in the soul of universe, by arousing their interest in astral speculations, varro incited them to give up politics and to cultivate philosophy. Last but not least - to his compatriots who despaired of future he offered, in the liber de philosophia, a deep meditation on individual happiness. This is the meaning of the

Full textAthanasius of Alexandria (+373) not only stands as the "Champion of Nicea", but also promoted a careful well-balanced description of the trinitarian mystery : "One godhead in a Trinity". As he speaks neither of one or of three hypostases, nor of one or three substances, he avoids both extreme positions : the three-hypostases theology, professed by a majority of Oriental bishops, insisting so much on a real distinction between the divine persons, as to subordinate them each to each ; and a one-hypostasis theology, which, by refusing a self-subsistence to the Word, nearly falls into sabellianism. This trinitarian theology develops itself during the debates on the reception of the Nicean formula (325), singularly around 359-362, when Athanasius defends consubstantiality in his Treatise on the synods, and deals for the first time with the pneumatological question, in the Letters to Serapion

Full textThe aim of our research is to show how Heidegger challenges classical metaphysics of platonic origin, which can be considered as the origin of a causa-sui god, the god of onto-thelogy. For Heidegger, as Nietzsche showed so well, it is a question of proclaiming "the death of God", a supreme value stemming from metaphysics. In the first place, we will deal with the major thems of existential ontology in Heidegger’s work and then show how they have been used by theologians. Secondly we will show how Heidegger’s approach to that is sacred could lead to a new theological formulation. The ultimate aim of our thesis is to show that heidegger is not an atheist and that his thought allows a greater expression of faith than that of the human sciences

Full textWhat are the main characteristics of a theology stemming from a mystic experience ? This thesis attempts to answer this question by examining an individual case, that of The Showings of Julian of Norwich (C14th- C15th). The Long Text of this opus enables us to observe a development in the fields of anthropology, Christology and Trinitarian theology. Firmly rooted in her experience of life, Julian’s theological discourse is interwoven with the emotions drawn from that experience. Julian speaks about God in speaking to God and in establishing with her « fellow Christians » an emotional and noetic community. But a mystical experience does not automatically give birth to a mystical theology as understood by Pseudo-Dionysius and Jean Gerson. We are rather in the presence of a prophetical and visionary theology that is fully conscious of its partial, limited, and contextualised nature. We find ourselves at a turning-point in the history of theology and spirituality, which sees the emergence of two separate fields that of scholastic theology and that of spirituality, where previously patristic theology bore witness to a profound unity. The different methodologies used in this research are in the service of a study within two distinct fields : those of theology and the history of spirituality

Full textThe early 1970s have witnessed the birth of the neologism of "Contextual Theology", also called "Contextualization. " This neologism has expressed conceptually theological movements that rose in several areas of the Third World and in many socially disadvantaged areas. We can cite as examples the "Liberation Theology", the "Black Theology", the "Dalit Theology," the "Feminist Theology", etc. Lebanon has witnessed during the same period several local theological attempts who have suffered successive wars that took place on the soil of the Land of the Cedars. These reflections have treated, each in its own way, three topics: the Christian-Muslim dialogue, the internal reform of Churches and ecumenism, and Political Theology. This thesis would, after defining the concept of contextual theology, make a report in a first step, of these Arab local theologies, little known in the Lebanese context and ignored in other parts of the world. In a second step, it will show that these local theologies are part of the global movement of contextual theology, and constitute a "Lebanese Contextual Theology" that has an Arabic identity. This theology has its own particularities and is unique

Full textIn ancient India, there was more to Time than would be expected in just an idea. It was truly a Power. In dealing with it, philosophers chose either to employ it for reaching any form of immortality, or to transcend it, or even to understand it as an illusion that could be explained away through rational examination. Abhinavagupta, a Śaiva master of the beginings of the first millenium offered a Third Way, a path shaped as a reconciliation and a realisation of a true synthesis of immanence and transcendence. This philosophy of Recognition endeavours to show by all means at hand - rational or otherwise - that Time is a particular inflexion of Awareness, understood as unbound, as a capacity to desire, to know and to build one's self by oneself. Thus the most dreadfull aspects of Destiny appear, at the end of the path of Recognition, as nothing but one's own free creation. We offer here a conceptual study centered on the problem of how to formulate the relationship between Time and Eternity, illustrated by many quotations from source-texts, and supplemented with a selection of extracts dealing specially with the construction of a concept of Time as free Power
Faure, François. "Emmanuel Mounier : une théologie de l'engagement?" Strasbourg, 2011. https://publication-theses.unistra.fr/restreint/theses_doctorat/2011/FAURE_Francois_2011.pdf.
Full text[. . . ] Commitment today. Mounier writes : creating facts, that is faith. In order to do so, he describes a technique based on spiritual means : learn to be a person, centre one’s actions on testimonials and not on success, care about concrete action within our world. Commitment is all about doing things, lack of self-interest, creativity, breaching social codes and a simple life. The battle is above all spiritual and does not seek power because the non-existence of the ego is a solid rock I can identify myself to. Mounier designates Utilitarian philosophers as the founders of modern society, that should undergo a spiritual revolution against money. His observation is true, but his diagnosis is wrong. He does not distinguish moral utilitarism from economical utilitarism. The latter should be condemned. Ricoeur shows the way : fight for the building of an economical democracy. Touraine decrypts the available discourses : the talk on the dominating ideology and the dominating interpretative discourse, the one that namely limits us within anti-individualistic nonsense. Mounier indicates how using spiritual motives connected to the Gospel, evangelistic commitment modalities and evangelistic diatribes in which commitment lies, the word of the Gospel helps us go beyond ideological iron bars. He formulates four resolutions to take part in a new vision of our world : to have a bad conscience, to rebel against myths, to break free from our tranquility systems, to take a step back before entering into action. In doing so, he defines a theological praxis that concretely assists human beings by turning the word into a source of spiritual life. For Schleiemarcher, practical theology crowns theological studies. A question comes up : how can one be a theologian nowadays? Should one work in an academic or ecclesial institution or should one be professionally and socially integrated in the technical and economical world? Should one remove oneself from action to serve knowledge or else be a man of action capable of conceiving, creating and animating forms of social organizations that free human beings from social and political subjection? Albert Rouet simply reminds us that truth in theology lies in the commitment it allows

The east end, older, with many streets often narrow and with older more popular constructions opposes the west end, spread out, residential and much greener. This dissymmetry is not due to natural conditions of the site; it is the outcom of historical events. For the first fifteen centuries a. D. , the hill is sparsely populated. In the first century a. D. It has two national monuments. In the middle ages the hill is still mostly rural and yet dirt roads leading to lyon are allready denser in the east end. From the 16th century to the beginning of french revolution it is an area around the great town. It receives fortifications, public buildings, market-gardens, country houses and convents. The hill becomes an area for land investments: the bourgeoisie buys out the east end while the nobility occups the west end. The only true extension of the city is the area around the main road leading to town. During the first half of 19th century and countrary to what is expected, the hill is rapidly urbanized

It is the first female religious congregation to be distinguished by its Eastern characteristics, both contemplative and apostolic, and created in Vietnam. During 335 years of existence, the Lovers of the Cross community, went through various trials and tribulations : persecutions, disasters, wars and changes of political regimes in particular. There are currently 24 congregations of the Lovers of the Cross nuns of Vietnamese origin of which one is in the United States. Three of them are in Thailand and two others in Laos. One can wonder how the Lovers of the Holy Cross can manage to abide simultaneously by the Canon Law provisions derived from the latin Church and to preserve and the typical features characterizing their Asian culture. Eager to combine her studies of canonical right with a thorough investigation of the legislative texts of her Congregation, the author, a Sister of the Lovers of the Cross, commits herself to this research work so that she can better understand the type of Religious Institute her Congregation belongs to and the most appropriate type of its executive authority. From this point of view, this work is divided into three parts : initialy the first part will present the exercice of authority or executive authority according to Vietnamese tradition. Then the second part will be devoted to a study on the government of the religious Institutes according to the provisions of the Canon Laws. And eventually the third part will approach the exercise of the authority within the Congregation of the Lovers of the Holy Cross. The wish is expressed that in the future, within the Universal Church, all the congregations of the Lovers of the Holy Cross can be reorganized in form of governmental structure recognized by the Church

Full textThis study sets out to analyze the symbols used by john of the cross both in his poetry and prose, in an attempt to gain a more concrete grasp of the nature of mystical experience. Our approach derives essentially from the psychoanalytical approach, not with a view to defining an individual evolution such as Spanish carmelite Juan de Yepes's, but to having an insight into the more universal meaning of such an experience. We still propose to gain a better grasp of the experiential knowledge of god. But we also aim at highlighting the exemplary nature of this spiritual adventure, in which a man asks himself the questions we all ask ourselves about love, time, death, solitude and suffering, and suggests answers that the seems unwilling to disclose to eyes too profane to see any deeper than the surface of his words. He conceals things under the veil of myth. That of narcissus in particular and that of the origin, the old story of Adam and Eve which he suggests we reread through the book of Tobias. And the interpretation we lead us to throws light on our own history

Full textAt a time of epistemological rupture when an "episteme" breaks up and another one becomes apparent, Christian anthropology has to deliver a message on mankind. Man is equally and complementary man and woman. Created by a god-trinity "in his own image", the man carries in himself the holy face that is the spirit life breath and person in god himself. The man has a loving power (a capacity of love) stemming from his being of relation which constitutes his sexual life of male and female "according to god resemblance". Evil has been and always is, a real experience for man but Christ, by his death and resurrection, canceled evil. From that time on the man, man and woman, can act on evil and builds the world, banishing it in all its forms. The spirit of god is pouring out between man et woman at this focal point where art and liturgy are born together, where mysticism and action interlace to design the outlines of a divine universe made of an endless happiness

It is supposed that male hysteria originates from anxiety hysteria and also that, in pathological circumstances, symptom grows to a deep blending of anxiety hysteria with conversion hysteria. Full textThis work in theology has for object the study of the relation between science and theology, considered as two understandings of the world. The study starts with a set of scientific authors, philosophers and theologians. A first stage puts the problem from sciences. It reveals a diversity of approaches which lead to examine the question of naturalism at work in science and in philosophy. Naturalism shows itself more differentiated than it appears at first sight. The reflection continues with theologians. It consists in studying the way they thought about the relation between science and theology. This examination indicates a difference between theologians with a scientific origin and others because of a different relationship to science. The study also shows that the relation between science and theology entails the mediation of philosophy according to different perspectives: theism, philosophy of nature, metaphysics. These perspectives condition the possibility of a natural theology and the place which is granted to it. They also show that the consideration of scientific understanding of the world has philosophical and theological consequences. This requires to think, for example, about causality in work in nature and consequently about God’s action in the world

Full textWith multiple historic controversies, the modern theological and spiritual literature still struggles to think about fertile links between theology and mystic. On this subject, the thoughts of Lubac – in which mystic is a fundamental axis – can still offer major developments. Our inquiry focused mostly on the known lubacian corpus as well as completely new texts (that are reproduced in the annex of the thesis). For starters, through synchonical and diachronical analysis, we managed to highlight an evolution in the thoughts of our author and to distinguish, without opposing them, two periods in his work : before and after the sixties. Important asset, since his thought is almost unanimously known for its coherence. But we managed to go further, carrying out an unfinished movement, we have offered an original (syn)thesis – but still very lubacian in its construction -. Negatively, it can be summarized as follows : one must renounce to the most commonly spread model today that consists into think that the unity of mystic and theology will come from their reciprocal exchange. Positively, the issue is to see in the traditional intelligence of the Writing – meaning in its quadruple meaning – not only as a comprehension model of the two kind of relationships between mystic and theology as well as their complimentarity but also the almost sacramental matrix through witch they receive from the Mystery their unity. And so it appears for today, a path both theoretical and practical…

The paradoxes that cancel all possibility of representing the world once the only interpretation allowed by our axiomatic postulates is a logical one; the contradictions born of irreconcilable dogmas but which in the absolute are two sides of the same coin; the intuition and the magical power underlying pre-Socratic thought and the mysteries of theogonic exegesis ; the idea of being able to read in the theories of Schopenhauer a map of the universe; and the combination of arguments that forms a metaphysical explanation of the world-all this, for Borges, is a branch of fantastical literature

Full textFrom 1980 until the end of the decades of the 90s, there is a resurgence of theological thinking and writing about the question of how to build a more peaceful world. This work focusing on the renewal of a theology of peace finds significant expression in the United States. Included in this effort to build a theology of peace are perspectives that see in pacifism an approach that is both coherent with respect to the message of the Gospel and relevant as a part of the Church’s contribution to peace in a violent world. Pacifist expressions are found in Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical discourse. This dissertation is an analysis from an evangelical perspective of three of these expressions of pacifism. Using the three components of a methodological model proposed by Canadian evangelical theologian Stanley Grenz, we analyze the relationship between this methodological approach and the three portraits of pacifism that form the corpus of this study. Our analysis will lead us to determine that there is a strong methodological correspondence between the three expressions of pacifist discourse studied and the evangelically-inspired theological model proposed by Grenz.

Full textThe aim of the present thesis consists in re-evaluating, in several important respects, theological thought of Xenophanes. First of all, Xenophanes is the first thinker to have adopted an epistemological distinction between discourse concerning god and discourse concerning nature, thus distancing himself from his Ionian predecessors who identified the divine with their primary cosmological principle. On the other hand, in adopting epic language and form of expression, Xenophanes criticised the anthropomorphic notion of god implicit in the works of the epic poets. On the basis of that critique he formulated his theological doctrines that lie at the basis of the Parmenidean ontology (as both Plato and Aristotle attest) to the extent that Xenophanes was the first to describe god as unique and immutable. Furthermore, purely noetic nature that Xenophanes attributed to his unique and immutable god, by means of which he sets everything in motion, not merely prefigures the noetic immutability of Parmenides' being, but is also directly echoed in the god of Empedocles. The latter is considered as an intellect which through his thought directs everything that is, thus anticipating the primary unmoved mover of Aristotle's metaphysics. By the way of the conclusion we argue that, in adopting epical language to convey their thought, Xenophanes, Parmenides and Empedocles distance themselves from their Ionian predecessors who practised physics in the sense of Historiê to the extent that the former practised 'theology' - they invoked god in order to answer the questions concerning divine reality which escapes human experience and knowledge
