Full textThis study deals with the movement called the “Liberation Theology” in Haiti. With a historical approach, it aims to trace back the evolution of the movement from 1970 to 2004 while showing the networks and actors involved. Though the movement’s true birth is very recent in Haiti’s society, its development has been groundbreaking. It has grown through many grassroots structures such as the ecclesiastic grassroots Communities, widely known as TKL (Ti Kominote Legliz), the groups constituted by peasants and the centers of formation. As a place of political education, brotherhood and solidarity, those structures have played a major role, in the 1980s, not only in the renaissance of the Catholic Church, but also because it helped to diffuse the « Liberation Theology » in Haiti. Their strength during the dictatorship has been blatant, through their public positioning and their actions which have in a large measure contributed to the dictatorship’s downfall. The movement was led by priests from diverse social backgrounds and Congregations. Some of them had been exiled during the dictatorship. Although the exile has been one of the most common sanctions during the dictatorship, it has not been the most efficient weapon since it led to the development, by these priests, of a powerful anti-Duvalier movement that was strongly influenced by the « Liberation Theology » whose press and grassroots associations were to be the main means of diffusion of their ideas and that was at the origin of Jean-Claude Duvalier’s departure on February the 7th, 1986. The movement’s success corresponds to the election, in 1990, of one of its leaders, Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Who are those actors ? What were their goal and mission? What are the main networks implied in this movement? Is there really a common viewpoint between the “Liberation Theology” and the ideas defended by its actors in Haiti? How can Jean-Bertrand Aristide’s ideas be said to coincide with those of the “Liberation Theology”? Should his presidential politics be considered as following the « Liberation Theology »? Those are the questions to which the present study will try to bring some answers

Full textThis thesis is dedicated to the new paradigms of the Theology of Liberation through a theological and interdisciplinary approach. How did the Theology of Liberation move from a preferential focus on the poor to choosing poor Mother Earth as a priority ?This reflection starts with the genesis of the Theology of Liberation, high lightening the pact of the catacombs, the CEB, Paulo Freire’s pedagogy, the methodology of the pastoral, the Episcopal Conferences of Medellin and Puebla, the evangelization and inculturation in the culture of people task, the evangelical witnessing of some bishops, priests and nuns, the conceptualization of the Pachamama/Tonantins and Sumak Kawsay, the cosmologies of the peoples of the Brazilian Amazonia, the theology India and the Theology of the Earth.L. Boff explains this interaction between the human being, Mother-Earth (cosmos) and God (the Sacred). He calls this interdependency and intercommunion relationship « ecotheology of the liberation » and in a more anagogical way, « ecospirituality ». This research also aims method of doing pastoral, of doing theology. This theological systematization of the experiences of the CEB has created a « revolution » in pastoral in the Latin-American Church and as a consequence to the universal Church

Full textThe present thesis develops an original approach to the theology of the liberation that crosses the apprehension of the object in term of social field and the interpretation of the ideological contents in paradigm term. It displaces the previous analyses that define it like a popular, peripheral and progressive theology, theoretical expression of the religious and social ruptures of an ample movement of the Latin American Christianity. It perceives it as a transnational theology whose dynamics of networks and whose religious and social interests clarify its double relation of continuity and discontinuity with the rejected norms of the religious domination and exogenous modernity in Latin America. It locates first its genesis within the transformations of the contemporary Catholicism and the activism of the Christian third world in the region. It explains them later social, political and ideological conditions of its appearance in the 1960's and reconstructs the main aspects of the field and the paradigm. Finally, it follows its displacements successive and it measures its impact, from the 1970's to the crisis of the expression in the 1990's
Martínez, Andrade Luis. "Critique de la modernité et écologie dans la théologie de la libération : la pensée de Leonardo Boff." Paris, EHESS, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014EHES0071.
Full textThe critique of capitalism - understood as an idolized system - is a particular theme in the architectonic theory and discourse of liberation theology. If formerly the poor were the preferred figure for this theology, nowadays it is the victim - in the sense of Walter Benjamin -who is placed in the center of its locus. The victim expresses itself in two forms, on the one hand the poor and on the other hand the nature, both destroyed by big industry and intensive agriculture; from there comes the necessity to rethink the struggle from the ;victims of the hegemonic system. In a large extent, taking into consideration specifically colonial Latin America, the liberation theology shares the romantic and the Marxist criticism of the modern and capitalist civilization. This critique finds itself articulated through the liberation project which concedes to Utopia a crucial role in the defense of humanity and nature. By analazing the thought Leonardo Boff, we are able to observe the critique that is carried out in Theology of Liberation. Even though, the theology of liberation in general and the intellectual contibutions of Leonardo Boff, constitute an important foundation what's referred to as the destructive dynamic of a the formation of a social hegemony. This research is based on 30 semi-direct interviews and field research in Brazil

Linked to the base ecclesial communities. A new way of being a church is being born in this continent. This study represents a search for an analysis and an ecclesiology underlying the life of what one calls the "church of the poor" within an ecclesiological framework, and, to be more precise, at a fundamental ecclesiological angle. The epistemological angle of the work has been fixed by the problematic of the base ecclesiological communities centered along the lines of continuity and novelty practice at ecclesial and ecclesiological levels - of this church experience, the rational specificity where the inner coherence is situated in relation to an ecclesiology, organizational life nuclei and reflections of the church, methodological and linguistic questions are being raised through this experience. The study is also limited by two aspects. The content of fundamental ecclesiology and that of ecclesiological reflection in Latin American. With regard to the period concerned, this study covers the period ranging from 1968-1986

Full textA research dealing with the repression of sexuality and the representatio9ns of male and female sexes in the catholic church of brazil. These subjects have been evaluated within the catholic action movement, in particular with reference to its youth branches representated by secondary and university students (1950-1967). And within the movement which succeded to it - the theology of liberation and the basic ecclesiastical communities. Catholicism has historically created some difficulties concerning human sexuality. Regarding the relations between sexes. One may find a certain social hegemony attribued to men and an ambiguous mystification about the women. This militant catholicism which has been analysed, in this thesis, has maintained some of this ambiguities concerning sexuality and sex relations: the sexual unification of "the human species" referred to as masculine gender; sexuality is condemned while celibacy and virginity are praised; eve, the women who "seduces", is condemned, whereas mary, the wom@an who "saves", becomes a myth. In spite of that , these movements have apparently surpassed these unspoken questions though the political consciousness given by the teaching of the gospel and througyh a certain idealisation of the loving couple "struggling" for the constitution of the christian family and the irruption of the social revolution

Full textIslamisms, « Liberation” nationalisms and leftist movements in the Arab Middle East have Jang seemed to oppose each others. Apparently, antagonistic relationships and a logic of hostility could still constitute the essence of a tie which is too quickly defined as an opposition between "seculars" and '"religious". Yet, the study of Lebanese and Palestinian political fields and areas can offer another approach, in counterpoint, in a long wave extending from the delayed impacts of the Iranian revolution on Arab Middle East to nowadays. Indeed, there are discontinuous series of "elective affinities'" and interrelated dynamics between political Islam, "Liberation" nationalisms and leftist movements: Evolution of leftist activists coming from radical leftist ideology to political Islam in the footsteps of the Iranian revolution -the "Fatah's Maoists", repeated tactical, electoral and military alliances between leftist and islamist organizations throughout the 19905, joint conferences between Arab nationalists and islamists, etc. . AII of these movements have currently failed to define a common, strategic and ideological language and framework: yet, the historical repetition of their relationship can not be denied, and doesn't cease to ask many questions. These repeated but inconclusive interrelated alliances are drawing, as a filigree, some structuring thematics deeply rooted in the Palestinian and Lebanese political areas: revolutionary messianism and "mystic of the masses", and, more than ail, repeated centrality and centrifugal effects of a thirld-worldist and nationalist "implicit ideology", currently recomposed and renewed

Full textThis thesis aims to analyse the institutional engagement of the Roman Catholic Church and other Pentecostal groups, regarding the land reform and agrarian policies launched in Brazil after the organisation of the Brazil’s Conference of Catholic Bishops (CNBB) held in 1952. We underline that it is necessary to highlight the way how the Roman Catholic Church started its actions by “teaching to read and write” and “recovering” their members those who were dragged into the socialist ideology developed by peasant’s leagues, in order to prevent the growing of the communist front in the countryside. At that time, the catholic’s social movement objectives were under eminent danger, due the Brazilian army aided by the U.S. government, declared a coup in 1964. The Roman Catholic Church in Brazil is divided into two wings: a left and a conservative. The left wing has launched the “Liberation Theology” prohibited by the head of the church in Rome. However, this religious left minority succeeded by organizing the Land’s Pastoral Commission, which contributed to the return of democracy, as well as the organization of the Worker’s Party in 1980, considered by the believers as the God’s will and the foundation of the Landless Worker’s Movement in 1984

Full textIf, at the very beginning (1954) of the dictatorship of general Stroessner, in Paraguay, the relations between the Roman Catholic Church and the government were peaceful, they became really bad from the middle of the seventies. The Church chose to help the poorest sections of the population (natives and landless countrymen, in particular). It violently denounces: the corruption prevailing within the government and the ruling “Colorado” party, the attacks against the freedom of the press, the abuse of power, the arbitrary imprisonments, the tortures, the suspect deaths. . . It appeals to a “National Dialogue” and draws a new energy from the visit of Pope John-Paul the Second, in 1988. It suffers, head-on, particularly in 1986-87, the government repression: the beating up of peaceful meetings and demonstrations, the censorship of radio programmes, the violent criticisms on the subject of the “Theology of the Liberation”, the expulsions of priests accused of being communists. .

Full text“Somewhere between my Marxism and my Decadentism, a third term was missing which is, in fact, Christianity”, dixit Pasolini in 1964. This thesis will re-examine La ricotta, through a theological prism : using the Eschatological Reservations developed by Johann Baptist Metz in tandem with the Liberation Theologists. In the light of this concept, the study of the trial of La ricotta and its central tension built around the comic, the sacred and the blasphemous, will allow us to consider the political weight of Pasolini’s aesthetic choices and to reconstruct the historic background of his work. La ricotta was commissioned as a film about the end of the world. One may shed new light on Pasolini’s creation by using eschatological theory. Through his interpretation of the Passion of Christ, he appears as a Marxist atheist within his asserted and revitalized Christian culture. To conclude, the Eschatological Reservations influence Pasolini’s aesthetic interpretation of the poor and their voices in Laricotta, and herald a new era, the Age of the Extras

Full textOur analysis of the theological discourse relates the characteristic traits of Afro-descendants in the Atabaque and the Conférence Haïtienne des Religieux et Religieuses (CHR) research work. These publications are used to bring to light the Afro-Brazilian and Haitian theological reflection as an expression of their commitment to multicultural and mestizo Brazil as well as black Haiti. They refer to the struggle of Afro-descendants and their resistance against what they consider to be the consequences of the period of slavery. What begun in the 16th century still oppresses Blacks in the 21st century and prevents their full emancipation. They are engaged in a post-colonialist approach to change which includes enculturation, recognition of African religions are an essential strength in their quest for full freedom of Blacks. Our approach, based on the comparative study of the content of these theologies developed in Brazil and in Haiti, highlights two separate currents from 1986 to 2004 in theological databases. This delimitation corresponds to the phase of publication of results of three consultations about black theologies in Brazil in 1986, in 1995 and 2004. The CHR’s works date from 1991 to 1999. Our study aims to trace their practice of the Christian faith, as well as their development and their evolution. Teologia Negra and Haitian theology represent two distinct black theologies. A comparison of the two contexts has never been made. This research led to the fact that three paradigms can encompass the major aspect of Afro-Brazilian and Haitian theological currents. We note the convergences and divergences of paradigms of the liberating enculturation, the post-colonialism and religious plurality. Afro-Brazilian theological reflection is seen as a socio-political approach above all anchored in the promotion of positive action to promote integration of Blacks, relatively a minority in a multicultural society. In Haiti, where Blacks are in majority, this theological reflection goes in the direction of the safeguarding of the historic roots to motivate change in a black society. This approach the issue of Blacks, interpreted in a new light, offer new avenues for theological reflection while strengthening cultural claims of the Afro-Brazilians and the Afro-Haitians to develop a new theological discourse. Our theory helps highlight two institutions committed to the cause of the Afro-Brazilians and the Afro-Haitians. The work of the Atabaque and the CHR testifies that they were likely to act collectively in contributing to the diversity of theological reflection of afro-descendants by supporting a process of solidarity between permanent victims of racism whether explicit or implicit. Our study raises the possibility of developing a meeting of black theology while taking on the challenge of building a network Brazil-Haiti regarding Afro-descendants. Finally, the specificity of these theologies can help inspire Latin American Christianity. This reflection is not limited only to these two countries, but extends to other Latin American or African contexts.

Full textOur thesis focuses on male violence against women in churches in Haiti. It is part of the disciplinary field of theology in interdisciplinary dialogue with human sciences, particularly at the intersection of sociology, anthropology, political science, philosophy, history, psychology, Men’s Studies and feminist theology. The problem revolves around four main issues: the prevalence of violence against women in Haiti; Church violence, the resistance and solidarity of Haitian women; the importance of the commitment of men in the fight against this violence. These questions are posed in a Haitian context and, more specifically, in the Christian churches in Haiti. The research has as methodological support the praxeology. This allows us to observe and articulate, from a field study, the stories of people who have been involved in episodes of church violence in Haiti. Such research seeks to stimulate social and religious change among clerics and lay people from an awareness that propels them to become involved in private spheres, but above all to engage in the political struggle against masculine violence towards women. Our thesis helps to promote: 1) the transformation of men's behavior towards women in Christian churches in Haiti; 2) the awareness of members of the clergy and secular men regarding respect for the rights of women, their emancipation and liberation; 3) masculine solidarity as a strategy to promote the integration of women in the positions of responsibility; 4) the involvement of men in the fight against male violence against women. Finally, the specificity of this research is not only limited to exploring the violence of men towards women in Christian churches, but also extends to other institutions of Haitian society.

Full textThe Latin American subcontinent lives in an endemic poverty; hence the fight for survival is a day-to-day activity. The people become increasingly poorer, and the human life is despised. Is it a question of material goods’ shortage or simply a matter of inequitable distribution of wealth? We assert that it is more about a threefold situation of domination, oppression, and institutionalized injustice. This thesis (dissertation/essay) aims at an exhaustive reading of Enrique Dussel’s theological Ethic from an emancipating perspective. We start from the intuition (hypothesis) that this material Ethics of life may bring about a response to the established prevailing moral system, and may be instrumental in transforming the unjust situation. The Dusselian theological Ethic of Liberation analyzes the Latin American being that is considered as “the other” by the long-standing system, and devote itself to changing qualitatively everyone’s actual conditions of life. In doing so, this theological Ethic rethinks in a critical fashion the totality of the principles of the prevailing morals from the negation of the victims’ life, and postulates an alternative, which must be materialized in History’s hic et nunc -that is in the here and from the now of History: The Liberation of the victims of any given system of domination. This project takes into account the spiritual dimension of the Latin American people. These people from the subcontinent, which claims to be Christian in an overwhelming majority, question themselves about God’s presence and work in the daily struggle for liberation. They wonder about the way they should live out their faith in God in such a situation of oppression and struggle for liberation. This is the pathway the present paper calls us to explore while inviting us to bear in mind that a better world is possible, and to remember that the God of life never abandons His creation, nor does he ever forsake it.
