Full textThe institutionalization of women's activities initiated during the 1980's by pastor's wifes and the acceptance of woman pastorate in 1995 show two distinct - and sometimes conflicting - processes increasing the participation of women in the Chruch liffe. The accession of women to pastoral ministry goes with a priority given to the training of pastors. The backgrounds of male or female students pastors arre different : girls who enter the scholl are single and holder of the baccalaureate whereas boys are married, do not have the baccalaureate but are sent by their parish of origin. The feminization of the clergy leads to a redefinition of authority's patterns in the "pastoral couple" and of the status of the pastor's partner in the parish. The feminization of pastoral and deacon's minitries goes with the transformation of Church ministries in terms of practice and legitimization, and conflicts with the official theological leanings of the Church

Full textThe role played by the soteriologic statements in the 1st letter to Timothy was often neglected for the benefit of the parenetic statements. Carefully arranged, expressed in a solemn way and supported by arguments of authority, these soteriologic statements are strictly connected to the topic of ministry which goes through the whole letter. The study highlights that their arrangement contributes to structure the letter, the desire of the author being to advance the divine will of a universal salvation, as well as the specific role which plays the ministry in this soteriologic perspective. Based on the example of Paul, the ministry appears as a "sign" of the inexhaustible mercy towards the sinners of God qualified as "Savior". It is a free gift, made for some, but for the good of all; the qualities necessary for the exercise of the ministry appear as "signs" of the call of God and the "grace" which accompanies it. The orders made for Timothy not to neglect this gift, to announce the Gospel, "to prescribe" and "teach", bring to light the role of the Christian Minister which is to lead to the salvation "those who will listen to him". This link between salvation and ministry has implications which go beyond just the person of Timothy: in spite of the literary artifices, the author is speaking, not from a hypothetical return of the apostle, but from the end time. The salvation work has to continue "until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ" through Christian Ministers, paradigm of which is Timothy

Full textPastoral ministry in the reformed church of France is in crisis. Understated, this is called « pastoral malaise ». Three sets of factors provide this crisis : change of paradigm which the french society finds difficultly in adapting to, so that the ministry is roughly changed, deployement of the effects of secularization, a perfectible organization and management within the reformed church. A theological construction organizes these sets interpretation. An anthropologie is built, then confronted with biblical anthropology. So rises the soteriological question. This implies the christology. A structure of christian existence is defined from christology. The goal of ecclesiology is consequently to think and promote this structure of existence. On this basis, the author puts forward solutions which also integrate sociology of the organizations and management theories

Full textRelatively little is known about the way the pastoral ministry was exercised in France during the period of the Edict of Nantes (1598-1685). The case of Paul Ferry (1591-1669), who became pastor at Metz in 1612 and remained there until his death in 1669, makes it possible to enter into the world of the « ministers of the Holy Word » in the seventeenth century. This study attempts to analyze the forms and models of the pastorate. These are not only religious and confessional, but also political, social, cultural and intellectual. The impact of the minister could be felt at different levels, ranging from the local to the national and, due to an exceptional network of correspondence, even to the international. The Reformed pastor, a cleric who differs radically from the Roman Catholic priest, has the duty continually to reassure the members of his congregation in their faith and about their salvation. He does so especially in the preaching, but also in the administration of the sacraments, and as well as by way of acculturation in imposing Reformed morals and discipline on his flock. Even the « private » life of the pastor can be considered as a form of edification, and therefore as a pastoral act. It is the pastor’s duty to give an example of the good Christian life, especially since with the Reformation’s emphasis on the priesthood of all believers he is no longer ontologically different from his congregation. The pastor can also assume the role of protector of his congregation as a political guide and church spokesman, in particular in face of Catholic polemics and powers, or else the role of a historian, writer, or rector to a collège. In that Ferry assumed all of these functions by virtue of his position as minister, he can – notwithstanding the opposition he at times encountered from within his own consistory – be considered a model of those pastors who exercised their ministry under the Edict of Nantes

Full textThe Church is also referred to as “body of Christ”, especially in Pauline epistles. It is almost analogous to a living organism. Therefore, its growth should naturally result from its health. But the Church in the West is facing a numerical stagnation and even a demographic decrease. What is fundamentally at issue is the ecclesial vitality and the ability to keep followers, but also to attract new members. The question of ecclesial ministry, which was very popular in the domains of exegesis and history of the Christianity in the 1970s and 1980s, was abandoned for 20 years. This question deserves to be retaken for reasons that are not only cyclical, but theological and ecclesiological. Nowadays the widely present ministerial plurality in the early Church is reduced to a pastoral monolithic. This thesis intends to put the question of ecclesial ministry foreground with a new perspective inspired from the hermeneutic approach and the method of rhetorical analysis. In order to provide avenues for the identification and development of mechanisms for the integral growth of the Church, we spotted in the light of a rhetorical analysis of two major texts of the Pauline corpus (1 Cor 12-14 and Ep 4:1-16), the vital functional needs of the ecclesial body and the fundamental principles that are embodied in the edification of the New Testament churches and that the apostles endorsed themselves. The general conclusions from this study are: (1) the Church has an organic structure and its growth is due to the effective and efficient implementation of various spiritual gifts; (2) the Church has a functional edification mechanism by which the ministers of the Word equippe all believers to make them able to accomplish ecclesial ministry and to edify the entire ecclesial community; (3) the edification of the Church is doing by continuously professing the evangelical truth in love, endeavoring to keep the unity and doing all things for the edification of the community and for the sole glory of Christ the Lord; (4) the edification of the Church goes through four growth targets: the unity of the faith, the unity of the knowledge of the Son of God, the accomplished statesman, the measure of the fullness of Christ. We build, from the intuitions spotted, a Pauline model for Church edification.

Full textThis research attempts to define Creation Care so that it is recognized as a ministry in the Catholic Church in Quebec. I followed the method of pastoral praxeology inspired by the humanities so that this practice is both effective in the field and faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The object of analysis is the practice itself, specifically the parish activities on the theme of the environment. I closely observed some relevant activities, including a training session given to pastoral assistants. Then I interpreted these comments in light of the Christian Tradition by drawing on the Bible, several theological references and Church statements. After this reflection, I improved this practice by organizing a new training for the Church staff, the project of a practical guide and the outline of a course on Creation Care Ministry to be given in universities. Finally, the prospective allowed me to imagine in the long-term how the practice will ensure a sustainable church ... in every sense.
