Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this thesis is to show the relevance of an application of hope care model to the Korean couples who are in conflict and confusion by being caught in the battle between Confucianism and post-modernity regarding marital values. Korean marriages face difficulties due to the increasing intluence of post-modernity in Korean culture. The disruption of the family is the most marked consequence of post-modernity, in which an attitude and value system toward life, marriage and especially self, is changing. Even though the increasing influence of post-modernity has weakened the influence of Confucianism, Korean marriage is still influenced by the tenets of Confucianism in terms of the role and status of men and women within four main areas: 1) education at home and at school, 2) sex discrimination at the workplace 3) military service for men, 4) the revival of cultural heritages as part of the rise of nationalism in response to globalization. It is said that the church has to take initiative to prevent Korean marriages from collapsing. However, the teaching around marriage in Korean churches seems to be mingled with Confucian precepts. This raises doubt about the capacity of Korean churches to contribute positively to the strengthening of marriage relationships. Marriage counselling in Korean conservative churches is being practiced within the framework of a reductionist view on biblical counselling. This is not sufficient in a post-modern Korea by the reason that this approach has the danger of ascribing all human problems to personal sins, thereby encouraging a one-sided God-concept in which God is only concerned with sins and righteousness and has no compassion for human beings in their suffering. When marriage is troubled, this God-image can lead the couple to severe guilt feelings rather than to the hope which can improve their marriage and enhance their mutual respect. Hope care, based on appropriate God-images and a constructive self-image arising out of God's faithfulness and our new being in Christ, could help couples to achieve a constructive attitude to life, to various crises, to self and to their partners. Since hope care model includes the sacramental concept of marriage, the concept of the grace and love of God and the concept of 'mutual submission,' it could be expected to adequately deal with the fundamental Confucian values (male's dominance, female's submissiveness and hierarchy), thus contributing to the attainment of the three key goals in the Korean marriage, such as equality, marital friendship and a closer marital bond. As a result, hope could then ensure a more healthy stance in order to help couples to grow in marriage relationships.

The Christian hope constitutes something essential to the Christian faith, because it is one of the three theologicals virtues, beside faith and charity. These virtues are called theologicals because the human being doesn t acquire them by its own effort, but as answer to a external strength, that is called grace, capable of awaking the search for meaning, a reason for the its own existence. This action conducts the human being to a further meaning of life, the éschaton. Our research about Christian hope shows what hope is. This basic founding is necessary to the objective proposed, in this case: to found and reflect Christian hope in Jürgen Moltmann s theology. He is one of the most important Christian thinker in nowadays. In his work, he brings a new focus to eschatology, bringing up the realization of eschatological hope through justice, humanization of the human being, socialization of humanity and peace to all creation. Therefore, for him, to speak of hope is to speak of a positive strength that makes us walk towards an horizon. It s an expectative that wishes something supreme, untouchable, infinite. Only the hope, in this case, the Christian hope, make us experience, now in the present, a kairós vivifying and advertiser of a not yet future.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Beyers Naudé has long been revered as one of South Africa‘s most influential church and civil leaders. He has been acclaimed both nationally and internationally as a symbol of hope. Recent developments at Stellenbosch University, with regards to the HOPE Project and the Beyers Naudé Centre for Public Theology, have given rise to renewed academic interest into the life and witness of Beyers Naudé, and specifically the concept of hope. The focus of this study is the contribution of Beyers Naudé to Christians‘ advocacy of hope in public life. A theological historical reading of his public speeches from 1960 to 1990 is conducted in an analysis of his advocacy of hope. A heuristic framework is used in order to investigate the nature and method in which Beyers Naudé employed the concept of hope in his public addresses. This framework is constucted by drawing on the concepts of hope, public theology and historiography, resulting in what I have termed a 'historically hopeful citizenship‘. A chapter is dedicated to a biographical overview of Naudé‘s life and witness in order to understand the influences in his life and to work with hermeneutical sensibility in analysing his addresses. Furthermore, this study is concerned with exploring the possible contours of hope in Naudé‘s addresses and finally asking whether an understanding of the nature and use of these notions of hope could contribute historical and conceptual knowledge about the church‘s public witness and whether this can have implications for the field of public theology.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this research project is to explore whether there are convincing, contemporary theological traditions within Christianity for conceptualising a socially responsible hope for our current times that can be envisioned, embodied and enacted in our world. It uses a theological-ethical framework of hope as social vision, virtue and practice to unpack the shape of hope systematically. It draws on diverse theologians such as Jürgen Moltmann, Albert Nolan, Walter Brueggemann and Flora Keshgegian as well as the Catholic philosopher Josef Pieper to offer multi-denominational and country perspectives on the topic that point towards the social practice of this hope as a central part of the mission of the church in our world today. This project examines a range of theological arguments for a world transforming Christian hope with concrete this-worldly social implications that is not just about ‘pie in the sky when we die’. It looks for a hope that can balance the demands of an active human responsibility alongside faith in a divine presence that is capable of being incarnated into how we see, are and act as humans in the midst of actual life as it is and not just as an abstract doctrine of belief for another world. It seeks for an ecumenically endorsed hope that can enable us to be active contributors to the wider human projects of social transformation clearly needed at the start of the 21st century enabling us to interpret Christian mission as hope in action within our world.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The researcher’s purpose for writing this paper is first to tell the story of one particular community of faith called the Mount Hope church. In doing so, the spotlight would be placed on the plight and challenges of the Mitchells Plain township life, conditions and ministry. Secondly, the research was seeking to challenge the status quo of a serious lack of human dignity by showing how and why it needs to be restored. Lastly, to then answer the research question: “How does one minister to marginalized and outcast people in such a way that their human dignity is restored?” The researcher has furnished a definition and description of the background of the word township as well as follow four tasks of doing Practical Theology as reflected in the work of one scholar Richard R Osmer. The descriptive empirical section has highlighted the researcher’s life story as key to the research, provided statistical details of the research context as well as individual testimony accounts of lives that have been transformed. The normative section has shown the importance of the prophetic mandate to discern the will of God for the research context. In the interpretive section the researcher has facilitated a dialogue between the descriptive and the normative sections to clarify the importance of system sensitive leadership. The pragmatic section is the last of the four sections where the researcher has shown the strategic output of the Mount Hope church through its leadership. The researcher has concluded by bringing all the chapters together again for the purpose of answering the research question: “How does one minister to marginalized and outcast people in such a way that their human dignity is restored?” It is clear that once they discover the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ and the acceptance and guidance of a faith community, they are on the road to restored human dignity.

This thesis explores the growth of liberation theology in the Filipino situation by drawing on the history and present state of the Philippines and the author’s own experiences in the country. After a description of the history of colonialism, the development of the political systems, and the condition of the environment, the paper also describes the genesis of liberation theology in Latin America as a template for Filipino liberation theology. The next chapter details the current movements for liberation in the Philippines, particularly how they apply to the political and environmental realities of the country. The author’s own stories of accompanying a marginalized community of persons with disabilities are included as instances of liberation among the Filipino people

The future of God in the mission of Christian hope is characterized by a research paper that develops in an eschatological perspective. This future that is free offered becomes noticeable from a movement of God in favor of human beings, through which human beings respond in faith and begins to move into hope, being able to transcend concrete signs around itself of the loving presence of God, which has been understood in this research as the mission of Christian hope. This reflection leads to the subtitle of this work, which makes a study of eschatology which is presented in the Theology of Hope by Jurgen Moltmann in approach to the Latin American Theology of Liberation in the current context. This is the theological perspective that marks the route of this work. At first, the theme will be theologically justified. After, this paper will discuss the hope from the Theology of Hope by Jürgen Moltmann and runs through the life of the author and his theology. Here will be raised the fundaments and reflections of this theology and how it responds to current issues. The next step is to discuss the Latin American Theology of Liberation, present its fundaments and reflections and how to update its message and announcement of hope. The last step will make an approximation between both theologies and treat the theological consequences of this approach, and how it reaches the proposed theme.

HIV/AIDS also presents the greatest threat and danger to the ones living in poverty and without sufficient education and independence in relationships –that mostly includes South African women. In a first chapter I will discuss the connection between poverty and HIV/AIDS as well as between HIV/AIDS and the status of women in South Africa. In a second chapter I want to discuss a feminist ecclesiology of memory and hope and how it is presented by the catholic feminist theologian Elizabeth A. Johnson. In a third chapter I want to use the feminist ecclesiology of memory and hope to link it with the context of South Africa. In that last part I want to give a framework of the effect that a feminist ecclesiology of memory and hope could have on the South African society.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Violent crime in South Africa in general and on the Cape Flats in particular, is a very complex phenomenon. This phenomenon has various historical, sociopolitical and economic roots. Furthermore, violent crime has a direct as well as indirect impact on the functioning of faith communities within societies. Congregations and churches do not function in isolation from the rest of society. Theology, and more specifically pastoral care, must be seriously concerned with the problems experienced by the community at large. A pastoral strategy should therefore move away from a spirituality that only focus on the impact of violence on individuals and families. Because violent crime is a systemic phenomenon, a socio-systemic approach should be followed, in which the impact of violent crime on faith communities should be analyzed in order to create a holistic model. In Chapter 1 we look at the reasons for violence. We focus on the appearance of crime, the relationship between aggression and crime. Different types of aggression as well as some underlying causes of aggression are discussed. In Chapter 2 we focus on crime as a national phenomenon. Certain historical roots of the current "culture of violence" are discussed. We also look at the impact of the political transition since 1990 on the socio-economic and moral situation in the country. In Chapter 3 we take a closer look at the situation on the Cape Flats. Particular attention is given to the issue of gangsterism, which in a certain sense has become synonymous with the Cape Peninsula. In Chapter 4 the trauma of violent crime on communities is the focus of discussion. Results of a victim survey in Cape Town are utilized. Violence against women and children enjoy special attention. The effect of violent crime on faith communities is highlighted. In the last chapter we try to put forward some guidelines for a theory of practice for the pastoral care of people living on the Cape Flats, using traditional-historic and current resources. We propose a holistic model with a systemic approach. We choose a theory of practice based upon an eco-hermeneutic model, which implies the following: The interpretation of the salvation of God to people (hermeneutic) within the reality (existence) of their daily lives (systemic). We indicate a few areas for long term, preventative building up and healing intervention and conclude with the results of this research.

Full textNowadays Lithuania, as well as the rest of the world faces the problem of the lack of hope. The current thesis explores the problem of the lack of hope and the possibilities for the cultivation of hope on the basis of Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical Spe Salvi. Part One of the thesis analyses the theology of hope with a particular focus on the encyclical Spe Salvi. Although hope is directed towards the future, it is also vitally important in the present. Similarly significant is the redeeming character of hope. Chapter One provides some examples which disclose the redeeming character of hope. Yet, probably the most significant thing is that true hope can be found only in God. Part Two features the reasons for hopelessness in Lithuania with a particular focus on the obstacles that prevent any stronger expression of hope among the Lithuanians. Lithuanian people bear a considerable number of anthropological wounds the roots of which can be traced in the second Soviet occupation. Those wounds, those factors depriving people of hope lie in alcoholism and Lithuania’s top position in the list of world suicide rate. Part Three is an attempt to apply the criteria for the cultivation of hope as proposed in Benedict XVI’s encyclical Spe Salvi in the situation of the present day Lithuania. Pope offers prayer, suffering, activity, promotion of initiative and the Last Judgment as the fields for exercising hope.

The research, in 5 chapters, develops the theme of the poor as a social category in Ps 3-14, subunit of the first book of the Psalter (Psalms 3-41). The Psalms 3-14 are attributed to David, the fact is related to the schools and their theologies present in the final edition of the Psalter. These Psalms were born in the peasant communities of ancient Israel, which were later improved and adapted by groups of official singers in the temple of Jerusalem. The Psalms 3-14 are characterized by the individual lament and supplication. They belong to a collection of pre-exilic, but concentrate in the late post-exilic texts. The places they occupy were strategically thought. The Psalms 9; 10 introduce hebrew concepts that identify the poor: dak, ani, ebyon. They designate the free small peasants who still with access to land. Throughout the ancient Israel history they did not suffer sudden changes as a social category, however, there are some notable features are that distinguish them in the periods corresponding to the first and the second temple of Jerusalem. Moreover, the Psalms 9; 10 show synonymous words that may identify them: hellkah "poor / unfortunate" and naqi "innocent." Despite the small variations of the concepts, all point to a social category, with the right to appeal in court, though with weak legal influence. This community has theological identity. Yahweh is presented as its counsel. The depletion in Psalter is something dramatic, because the face of the poor is the very face of Yahweh. Poverty is not a matter of misfortune or of spirituality. It is generated by a social-political system, intelligently planned, that does not allow the countryside people to progress as farmers. This powerful sector, domestic or foreign, is identified in the texts, with the following concepts: goyim "nations," sorerim "aggressors", oyebim "enemies", raxa im "unfair/ unjust . Their domain is supported by violence and weapons. The ideology of the dominant systems is fundamental in the interpretation of texts. The psalmists society presents the crises in relation to human identity. The violence and peace are vying for space. The Ps 8 shows an alternative society thought from the point of view of what appears weak: the olelim "children" and yanaqim "lactating" (Ps 8:3). The cries of little children, the cry of the oppressed, joined to the cry of creation, are comparable with the labor pain, from which life begins. It is a cry that seeks to transform the bent paths of history. These are signs of hope that distinguishes the theology of the poor. The Psalms 3-7 and 11-14 continue to present the reality of the poor. Sometimes the concepts are located: ani oppressed and ebyon "poor", others resort to new synonyms as has͇id "faithful" and sadiq "fair/ just" These Psalms demonstrate that the poor are present even in the texts in which such concepts do not appear. The groupings (Ps 3-7 and 11-14) is a break in the subunit (Ps 3-14), without breaking the sense of Ps 8, 9 and 10. Finally, in the society of Ps 3-14 is located in the, tax mode of production. Theories of economic sciences, archaeological, historical, contribute to the understanding universe socio-political generator of the poor.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation is an attempt to address the problem of the relationship between Yahweh and Hope in Isaiah 5:1-7 in the light of parallelism in the book Isaiah. It is an attempt to prove that our hypothesis, that hope in the book Isaiah can be explained theologically in a special manner by means of parallelism (synonymous, antithetical and synthetical); that hope can also not only theologically be understood in concordance (synonymous and synthetical), but also in contradiction (antithetical); that Isaiah 5:1-7 can be used as a good example of antithetical parallelism and that the social, cultural and ideological texture give cause to the different accents of the theological understanding of hope in Isaiah. For this study we used the socio-rhetorical approach of Vernon Robbins. In Chapter 1 we look more closely at the socio-rhetorical approach, we look for possible flaws and make some suggestions. For the clarification of the concepts "hope" and "parallelism" we focus on the meaning of these concepts as included in the hypothesis of this dissertation. An overview of the research of Isaiah 5:1-7 is given and how the history of interpretation has been characterised by three approaches, namely the historical-critical, literary and theological approaches. By the use of the socio-rhetorical approach we attempt to study more fully "God and Hope in Isaiah 5:1-7 in the light of parallelism in the book Isaiah". In Chapter 2 we are focusing on the inner texture of Isaiah 5:1-7. We are looking to the following: - The repetitive texture and pattern; we are looking for the occurrence of words and phrases more than once in a unit. - The progressive texture and pattern; there is a progressive building up from verse 1 to verse 7 in words and phrases. - The narrational texture and pattern; Isaiah 5:1-7 has been characterised by two structural forms, namely a love song and a juridical case. - The opening-middle-closing texture and pattern; the exposition looks as follows: - opening: vv. 1-2d; - middle: vv. 2e-4; - closing: vv. 5-7. - The argumentative texture and pattern; Yahweh is building up an argument. He is using the example of a vineyard and court terms to explain and build up His case. - The sensory-aesthetic texture and pattern; the relationship between Yahweh and his people become sour and we are talking of contradicting emotions and acts, namely excitement and disappointment, pressing (of the grapes) and judgement. In Chapter 3 we are focussing on the intertexture of Isaiah 5:1-7 and its connection with hope. We are looking to the dating of Isaiah 5:1-7. The possible intertextual connections between Isaiah 5:1-7 and the other texts in Isaiah are "recitation", "recontextualization" and "thematic elaboration". Considering that "parallelism" is part of the theme of this dissertation, we are taking antithetical parallelism as point of departure to concentrate on four focus texts, namely Isaiah 5:1-7 (main focus texts), Isaiah 27:2-6, Isaiah 40:27-31 and Isaiah 59:1-21. In terms of parallelism and dating we typify the four texts as follows: - Isaiah 5:1-7: antithetical parallelism; late post-exilic. - Isaiah 27:2-6: late pre-exilic. - Isaiah 40:27-31: antithetical parallelism; exilic. - Isaiah 59:1-21: antithetical parallelism; post-exilic. that play a role in how hope is understood are: "viticulture", "dwellers in Jerusalem", "men of Judah", "house of Israel", "Jacob/Israel" and "Zion". In Chapter 5 we are focussing on the ideological and sacred texture of Isaiah 5:1-7 and its connection with hope. The following issues cast light on how hope must be understood in terms of the ideological texture, namely "the conflict between communities", "the ideological conflict concerning Zion theology", "the people circumstances in the exile" and "class conflict". In terms of the theme, "God and Hope in Isaiah 5:1-7 in the light of parallelism in the book Isaiah", the role of Yahweh is crucial in in the way hope must be understood. In the sacred texture of Isaiah 5:1-7 Yahweh plays the following roles: "Gardener-Viticulturist", "Creator", "King", "Judge", "Warrior" and "Husband". In Chapter 6 we summarise our study and also give a conclusion to the study, the contribution of the dissertation to the field of study in comparison with existing research and suggestions with reference to further research. Therefore, the answer on the question, "How can hope been theologically understood in the book Isaiah in consideration of the literary and historical textures of Isaiah 5:1-7?" is as follows: Hope with parallelisms as point of departure in the book of Isaiah can be theologically understand on how Isaiah 5:1-7 is socio-rhetorically been investigated.
In Chapter 4 we are focussing on the social and cultural texture of Isaiah 5:1-7 and its intertexts and its connection with hope. With regard to the social and cultural circumstances the predominant religious reaction is "revolutionist" and the rhetoric "dominant" and "counterculture" or "alternative". The social and cultural concepts Hoop, met parallelismes in die boek Jesaja as uitgangspunt, word teologies verstaan deur Jesaja 5:1-7 sosio-retories na te vors.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The HIV and AIDS epidemic has affected the whole South African society, including the church. The dilemma of adequate reaction to the effects of HIV andAIDS on the pastoral responsibilities of the church is posing serious questions to the church in South Africa as it deals with the care of those affected by the epidemic. The HIV and AIDS epidemic is challenging the church to re-investigate its own traditional way of help and support and to realise that the Christian faith community needs to be part of the team-approach in the fight against HIV and AIDS.A holistic approach to healing will lead us to a new and different understanding of the diakonia of the church (nuwe en anderverstaan van diakonaat). This study will investigate how care can be administered in such a way that it becomes meaningful to both the infected, affected and those involved in administering care. It will require an ecclesiology that is informed, formulated and structured from the bottom-up rather than the traditional top-down approach. It will be what we can call a ―base-community‖ ecclesiology. This thesis will therefore, in the light of the challenges that the HIV and AIDSepidemic presents, put forward an ecclesiology formulated on the ground, a grassroots ecclesiology other than the official or traditional formal ecclesiology: an ecclesiology not only directed towards the members of the specific church (membership diakonia), but an ecclesiology focused on the broader community in which the church is located: a communal diakonia. This thesis argues that in light of the HIV and AIDSepidemic, this is a wake-up call for a new ecclesiology that will lead to the kind of diaconate described above. A bold new manner of ecclesiological being/structure is required: a new openness, frankness, boldness (parrhēsia) in dealing with HIV and AIDS. This parrhēsiawill come from the empowered members of the church as they become the caregivers in the community. Home-based care as it is practised at present runs the risk of a one-sided approach with its main focus on the physical wellbeing of the person. An ecclesiology of grassroots care and identity-formation is needed to fill this void. The research investigates how a theology of affirmation can be integrated into the system/practice of home-based care to become a meaningful part of the help or assistance given to the individual and his/her household. Furthermore, the study explores how pastoral care and counselling to the HIV positive person and his/her household can be enriched through the application of a paradigm of praxis to the least in society in home-based diakonia by applying a theology of affirmation, so as to affirm and restore dignity, give meaning to life and the process of death and ultimately provide answers to the quest for identity and affirmation through an ecclesiology of grassroots care. This study is also a call for a paradigm shift with regard to ecclesiology and diakonia in the South African church that may have a profound effect on the church in South Africa. This shift must happen in three areas: 1. The church must become actively involved in home-based care as part of its ministry and calling to the world amidst the HIV and AIDSepidemic. The church can no longer be a bystander or advisor, or at best a supporter of government and civil actions. Every congregation needs to become active within the community they serve through joint/combined and innovative ways with other churches in their areas in establishing an ecclesiology of grassroots care. 2. The diakonia of the church must change. Every member must realise their full potential of utilising their Holy Spirit gifts and fruit in order to serve/minister in the Kingdom of God. Diakonia can no longer be the responsibility of a few ordained or commissioned for the diaconate. The whole church must become active in service to their community and those living around the church. The church needs to break the chains of membership-diakonia and open the arms of Christian love to everyone in need, even those who hates us. 3. Perhaps the biggest challenge is the call to change our way of being church in South Africa: our ecclesiology. We must admit that we have come to love the church more than we love God and that we forgot that God so loved the world not the church! This realisation will make it possible to become open to the proposal of this thesis: that we become church from the bottom up, that we start to practice a grassroots ecclesiology.
Hierdie skuif moet in drie areas plaasvind: 1.
