Abstract:
This book examines the long history of cowboy Christians in the American West, including the cowboy church movement of the present day and closely related ministries in racetrack and rodeo settings. Early chapters move from the postbellum period through the twentieth century, tracing religious life among cowboys on the range as well as projected in popular imagery and the media. The central chapters focus on the modern cowboy church and examine its structure, theology, and method of perpetuation, as well as exploring future challenges the institution may face, such as its relegation of women to subordinate participant roles. The final chapter considers present-day incarnations of rodeo and racetrack ministries as examples of the cowboy Christian proclivity for blending the secular and the sacred in leisure environments. Woven throughout the text is a discussion of the religious significance of the cowboy church movement, particularly relative to twenty-first century evangelical Protestantism. The author demonstrates that its antecedents and influences include muscular Christianity, the Jesus movement, and new paradigm church methodology. With interdisciplinary research that blends history and sociology, the text draws on interviews with leaders from cowboy churches, traveling rodeo ministries, and chaplains who serve horse racing and bull riding environments, as well as incorporating the author’s own experiences as a participant observer.

Fountain, Philip. Creedal Monologism and Theological Articulation in the Mennonite Central Committee. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190652807.003.0011.

Abstract:
This chapter presents an ethnography of Christian theology. It does so by examining theological articulation in and through the creedal form. Creeds may be taken as an archetypal monologic mode of expression due to their monovocal presentation of standardized, non-debatable claims. Through close attention to how and why creeds are created it is possible to examination the contours and operations of the monological imagination. Drawing on fieldwork and archival research, this chapter explores the creedal articulation, as well as instances of disarticulation, within two North American Anabaptist service organizations, namely the Mennonite Central Committee and Christian Aid Ministries. Their differing strategies of theological articulation illuminate the uses and limits of monological discourse.

Johnson, Mary, and Mary L. Gautier. International Sisters and Priests in the United States. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190878153.003.0009.

Abstract:
This chapter summarizes key findings from the 2016–2017 Trinity Washington University/CARA study of international sisters and the 2009-2012 Oblate School of Theology/CARA study of international priests living and ministering in the United States. The findings compare international sisters and priests according to their country of origin, age, age at time of immigration to the United States, and year of immigration. The chapter also explores their pathways to the United States, their purpose in coming to the United States, their level of education, their proficiency in English, and their current ministries. It concludes with a brief argument that Catholic sisters and priests who minister in a nation not theirs by birth serve a crucial function in the Church today, and that their presence in the wider immigrant population in the United States draws attention to the compelling issue of immigration reform.

Watson, Kevin M. Old or New School Methodism? Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190844516.001.0001.

Abstract:
This book argues that an initial moment of fragmentation occurred in American Methodism in the 1850s and 1860s. While a commitment to entire sanctification had been a core unifying doctrine within the broad American Methodist family up until the 1850s, the expulsion of Benjamin Titus (B.T.) Roberts from the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC) and the subsequent formation of the Free Methodist Church (FMC) represent an initial fragmentation of what had been a coherent theological tradition. This detailed account of a crucial moment in American Methodist theology focuses on the ministries and theological emphases of Matthew Simpson, the influential MEC bishop best known for being a confidant of Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, and B.T. Roberts, a pastor who was expelled from the MEC due to his harsh criticism of “New School Methodism.” Old or New School Methodism? is a detailed study that points to the need for a broader reevaluation of the history of American Methodism as a theological tradition. Previous historiography has often privileged big-tent visions of American Methodism in a way that has not taken with sufficient seriousness the disagreements such historical figures had with each other. By comparing and contrasting a key leader of the MEC with the founder of a holiness denomination, the book contributes to the history of American Methodism, and the broader study of religion in America, by widening the lens from what has often tended toward denominational history to a broader perspective that includes multiple denominations sharing a common heritage.
