Abstract:
This dissertation is an investigation into Theophilus of Antioch's use of cosmological allegoresis of Greek myth in Ad Autofycum. It serves two purposes: (1) it contributes to our understanding of the mythological interpretation by Theophilus and the other second century Christian apologists, and (2) it concludes that the purpose for Theophilus' use of cosmological allegoresis of Greek myth is to portray Hellenistic cosmo-theological ideas as foils to those he associates with Scripture. The first chapter surveys previous research on Ad Autofycum, its apologetic argument and its use of mythology. The evidence for evaluating Theophilus' use of cosmological allegoresis is then examined in two parts: Part One establishes the historical context for the study in two chapters: Chapter two includes Graeco-Roman attitudes toward myth, advocates of 'barbarian' myth, cosmo- theological readers and the place of cosmological allegoresis; Chapter three surveys Jewish and Christian use of cosmological allegoresis and interpretations of Genesis in the doctrinal history of the ontological relationship of God and matter. Part Two assesses Theophilus' use of cosmological allegoresis in two chapters: chapter four shows how cosmological allegoresis fits his apologetic argument and examines his interpretations; Chapter five shows how Theophilus contrasts the myths and Scripture and portrays Autolycus as a cosmo-theological interpreter of myth. Finally, chapter six provides a general summary of the dissertation and its conclusions. This dissertation concludes that the purpose for Theophilus' use of cosmological allegoresis of Greek myth is to portray Hellenistic cosmo-theological ideas which serve as foils to those he associates with Scripture. It also explores several implications for current scholarship and provides a prospective for future study in this area.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)-- University Stellenbosch, 1993.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Johann Theophilus Hahn, son of the Rhenish missionary J. Samuel Hahn, was born at the mission station Ebenaeser (Lutzville) on 24 December 1842. As a boy at the mission stations Ebenaeser and Berseba and Bethanien in South West Africa (Namibia) he learned to speak the different Khoisan dialects. Samuel Hahn left for Germany in 1852, for the sake of his children~s academic training. There Theophilus proved himself as an outstanding student and he obtained his doctorate in 1870 on the dissertation Die Sprache der Nama; nebst einem Anhang enthaltend Sprachproben aus dem Munde des Volkes. While studying at the University of Halle he published a number of ethnological studies relating to the aborigines of South West Africa (Namibia). On his return to South Africa, he became a trader in South West Africa. After his marriage in 1875 to Marianne Esther de La Roche Smuts he settled at Rehoboth, where he started a trading business. Hahn left South West Africa in 1878, after it became clear that the Cape Government's enthusiasm for action north of the Orange River waned, as a result of its own military burdens on the eastern border, in Griqualand West and Basutoland. He went to live with his brother Johannes, a Rhenish missionary at Stellenbosch, where he completed the first map of South West Africa - Original map of Namagualand and Damaraland. In 1881 he was appointed as government philologist and custodian of the Grey Collection in the South African Public Library. His appointment as Grey custodian gave rise to an application to the Supreme Court to have the care and custody of the Grey Collection given up to the Grey Trustees and for an interdict to restrain Hahn from interfering with the Grey Collection. This application by the Grey Trustees was refused by the Supreme Court. In 1883 he provided the Cape Native Laws and Customs Commission information regarding the Nama and Herero cultures. This commission was directed by the Cape Government to enquire into the laws and customs of the Blacks and to report on the advisability of introducing some system of local self-government in the Black territories. While living at his farm Prospect Hill, he wrote a letter to the agent of Adolf Llideritz,Heinrich Vogelsang, in which he supplied valuable information about the prospects of South West Africa and suggested that Llideritzacquire Angra Pequena (LlideritzBay) as a harbour for trading purposes. He resigned as philologist and Grey Librarian in 1883 and became the manager of the farm Welmoed, in the district of Stellenbosch. As a wine-farmer he proposed the establishing of a co-operative for the production of wine, also prompt action for combating the phylloxera disease. With the assistance of Hahn the mining company Kharaskhoma Exploring and Prospecting Syndicate, a company based in London, obtained in 1890 important concessions from the chiefs of Bondelswart and Veldskoendraers - a monopoly for the exploitation of minerals, rights to trade and to contruct railways. After the syndicate transfered its rights to the South African Territories Company, he left South West Africa and bought th farm Blaauwklip (Blaauwklippen) at Stellenbosch. His farming attempts proved a disaster and his farm was sold to Cecil John Rhodes. He became an agent for the Equitable Life Assurance Society in Johannesburg and while residing at 206 Market Street he offered to act as a spy for the British Military Government. This was declined. He died on 22 January 1905 and was buried in the Braamfontein cemetery.

Abstract:
The native policy of Sir Theophilus Shepstone was influential in the evolution and formation of mid-nineteenth century Natal. From 1845 to the incorporation of Natal into the Union of South Africa in 1910, the native policy of Theophilus Shepstone dictated the organization and control of a native population of well over 100,000. The establishment and makeup of this system was an important institution in not only the history of Natal, but South Africa as a whole. While Shepstone was significantly impacted by the events of his early life, the main aspect of Shepstone's policy remained the Locations System. This system, created by the Commission for the Locating of the Natives in 1847, would dominate much of Shepstone's early career in Natal, especially the challenges made to the system during the formative years of the native policy. Shepstone's work in Natal would be called into question by several government officials, including Lieutenant-Governor of Natal Benjamin Pine. This conflict with the Natal government would eventually lead to Shepstone's abandonment of the Locations System for what would become known as his "Grand Removal Scheme." While the failure of this scheme would lead to the complete incorporation of the locations system, the longevity of the locations system itself is a product of the astuteness of Shepstone. While the colony of Natal was significantly impacted by economic and social factors, Shepstone remains one of the most influential figures in the evolution of the native policy of British Natal.

Simpson, Kathryn C. S. "H. Rider Haggard, Theophilus Shepstone and the Zikali trilogy : a revisionist approach to Haggard's African fiction." Thesis, Edinburgh Napier University, 2017. http://researchrepository.napier.ac.uk/Output/978289.

Abstract:
The history that H. Rider Haggard writes about in his imperial adventure romance fiction is neither collusive nor consensual with the Zulu who are often the focus of his novels. He writes a complex colonial narrative that characterises the Zulu as a proud and mythic, yet ultimately doomed, race. His early twentieth century trilogy, Zikali, is unique in that he uses the three books, Marie, Child of Storm and Finished, to narrate three pivotal events in the nineteenth century history of the Zulu Kingdom. In Zikali, he simultaneously propounds the legitimacy of the colonial endeavour, so effectively that he rewrites history, to ensure the primacy of the Englishman in nineteenth century Southern Africa historiography, whilst aggrandising the Zulu kingdom. This reframing of the colonial narrative—to suit the Western interloper—would be evidence of what is a standard trope within imperial adventure romance fiction, were it not for the fact that Haggard is ambivalent in his imperialism. He is both recorder and creator of imperial history, bewailing the demise of the Zulu Kingdom whilst validating the importance of the role of the colonial white Englishman; he senselessly kills hundreds of natives within his books, yet privileges the Zulu. Referencing one of the primary motivational sources in Haggard's own colonial experience, Theophilus Shepstone, I propose to show Haggard's sublimation of Shepstone's ideas into his own African Arcadian romances, and his creation of a Zulu historiography, which would go on to be lauded by the early South African National Native Congress as being one of the foundations of early twentieth century native socio-political self-fashioning. Haggard's work provides a fragmentary and elusive insight into nineteenth century southern African history and offers an abstruse glimpse into colonial culture rarely found in other imperial adventure romance fiction.

Abstract:
This work is a comparative study of the theological and historical development of the early Christian (pre-Nicene) and Mormon doctrines of God. For the Christian tradition, I follow a detailed study of the apostolic period, followed by the apologetical period, and then conclude with the pre-Nicene up to around 250 C.E. For the Mormon tradition, I cover the period beginning with the establishment of the Mormon Church in 1830 and conclude with its official doctrinal formulation in 1916. I begin this work with a chronological examination of the development of the Mormon doctrine of God, commencing with Joseph Smith's translation of the Book of Mormon and concluding with his revelations and additional translations of those books that make up the Pearl of Great Price. I then examine Brigham Young's single theological contribution, followed with the speculative contributions of Parley P. Pratt, Orson Pratt, John A. Widtsoe, B.H. Roberts, and concluding with James E. Talmage. This section covers chapters two through four. In chapters five through seven, I examine the theological contributions of Ignatius of Antioch, then Theophilus of Antioch, and conclude my study with the theological contributions of Origen of Alexandria. For the Christian tradition, I trace the development of the pre-Nicene theologians' struggle to explicate the theological and philosophical implications regarding the divinization of Christ within the context of monotheism.. At the end of chapters five through seven I include a succinct, comparative study of each father's doctrine with Mormon doctrine. This work will also address the major theological and historical factors that influenced both the Mormon and traditional Christian doctrines of God. Further, I contrast both theological systems and discuss their basic differences and similarities. My conclusion is that the fundamental difference between these two theological systems rests upon their foundational conceptions of reality as absolutist or finitist. The Mormon theological system rests upon a materialistic and monistic conception of reality, whereas traditional Christianity's system rests upon a dualistic conception of reality. In Mormon materialism, the Trinity is divided as individuated Gods; in Christian transcendence, the unity of God may only be maintained, while acknowledging the separate existences of the Persons of the Godhead, if the nature of God is understood as an incorporeal substance.

Abstract:
Theophile gautier (1811-1872) writes about spiritual matters throughout his work. He prefers the old testament, nevertheless, a catholic, he is ill at ease in his christian milieu, and clings fast to his own idea of a god who is both humane and lovable. The blessed and the cursed are not subject to sharp division. This impels him to shake free of the "old europe" and, like his hero fortunio, look for a religioin more in keeping with what he wants. He finds in antiquity, in egypt, in the world of islam, in greece and in india the material apt for assimilation in his personal idea of god. This conceptiion was of a neo-platonic cast : a god of light reached via the soul's aspiration, via beauty and via art. The secret of the avatar, the soul's transformation, was acquired on the way. Gautier also fell under the charm of the utopian thinkers of the day, and even of the proponents of magnetisme. Swedenborg's theory of correspondance was close to his own philosophical speculations. The theme of gautier's short story spirite presents a synthesis of his spiritual view. He gives an image of his "good god" here, as one of the possible ways of salvation. In the end, gautier sees himself above all as artist : art for him being the only way that man, born into original sin, can quench his thirst for religion and give expression to the ground of his being as god's own creature

A fórmula do naturalismo brasileiro (1888).
Abstract: This thesis analyzes the document (a general letter) from Theophilo Benedicto Ottoni to the voters of Minas Gerais State in 1860, in which, within the benefits of silence and privileging the political dimension, he built a coherence based path and, at the same time, his own image that he wanted to be registered in history. The study, using primary sources and some biographies ofthe liberal politician, it remakes this path demonstrating the subtle traps that the autobiographical gender carries and its problems as a historical source: the forgetfulness, the gaps and the contradictions. In this way, it reveals another dimension of this path that was not recognized in the autobiography: his perfonnance as an entrepreneur in the navigation, trade and colonization project that he implemented in the area of Mucuri (northeast of the province of Minas Gerais), fonn 1847 to 1860, in which showed the existent links between politics and businesses as a liberalism practice."

Abstract:
The formation of libertine ideas of the baroque period in france is studied, commencing from a brief resume of the general historical, political and cultural context. A review is made of the impacts of the humanist heritage and the reformation on the sensibilities and the ways of thought of the epoch. The moral of pleasure once defined in its genesis and nature, is then considered more particularly in life and work of two poets, theophile de viau and saint-amant. Striking because of its profoundly individualist character and refusal of any form of constraint, this moral finds itself in redical opposition with the dominant catholic morality and with the growing absolutism which had established itself under the reign of louis xiii

Abstract:

Abstract:
The major problem which has preoccupied the church of greece during the 19th and 20th centuries has been that of its ecclesiastical identity. It became the "state church" as a result of the declaration of the independence of its hierarchy (autocephaly) (1833), the rejection by theophilus kairis, the attempted purging called for by apostolos makrakis, and the alteration of its basic nature brought about by the religious movements of the 20th century

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study the functioning of a travel account in the orient, beginning with a introduction to motivations of the journey which gave birth to gautier's text. Then, in a synchronical perspective, the modes of writing will be examined in three stages. In the first stage, the descriptive writing which is made up of a study of the writer's descriptive style, the constant descriptive laws, the recurring formes utilized by it, the descriptive function, the rhetorical figures and the subjectivity used in the description. In the second stage, this work is an essay to clarify the text's organisation and to identify the principal elements, constitutives and structurives which determine it (it is notably the phenomenon of the second hand - the intertextuality - will be our principal object of study). Finally, this study tries hard to bring to light the traces of subjectivity in the text and attempt to uncover a meaning of the journey. Apart from the familiar meaning of a travel account, which consists of the faithful reproduction of a foreign reality, the second meaning of gautier's account is the discourse about death

Abstract:
The north transept portal at Notre-Dame in Paris depicts the legend of Theophilus. This legend is about a church official who sells his soul to the devil but then repents and is granted salvation with the help of the Virgin. This legend was one of the most popular Marian miracles in the medieval period, but it was extremely rare in sculpture. The rare subject, combined with the location’s importance (over a ceremonial door), lead me to propose a supplementary reading of this relief. The general consensus is that the Theophilus legend was used didactically or to honor the Virgin, and while I do not disagree that these reasons hold true at Notre-Dame as well, I propose an additional, site-specific reading. Considering the social and political environment of the cathedral and its hierarchy, especially the relationship between the bishop and his canons over the jurisdiction of the cathedral during the medieval period and particularly during the construction of the Gothic church, I contend that the Theophilus legend depicted on the north transept portal is a visual manifestation of the relationship between the bishop and his chapter. The lack of the bishop’s authority is portrayed, for a specially educated audience, in the inclusion of the bishop in a legend where he was a minor figure and in a sculpture in a physical location—the entrance from the canons’ cloister— where he had no authority. I argue further that, because of the exegetical identification of the Virgin with the church, the canons’ special devotion to the Virgin, and the canons’ association with the church they were in charge of building and running, the Marian imagery was a device used by the canons to mark their presence in their cathedral and, by asserting their presence, to demonstrate their authority and independence from the bishop.

Abstract:
This thesis contributes to our knowledge of the early (modern) Bohemian musical culture by tracing the musical production and activities at the Jesuit Clementinum college in Prague from its foundation in 1556 to the establishment of the autonomous Bohemian Province in 1623. This analysis draws on original Jesuit archival documents (diaria / diaries, memorial books, catalogi personarum / personnel catalogues, litterae annuae / annual letters, historiographical works of the period) and wider primary sources, which the author interprets within broader socio-cultural and historical realms. Authentic testimonies written in Latin that document musical activities in the Clementinum and the relationship of Prague Jesuits with music are included in the footnotes or in appendices. Individual chapters seek to illustrate (illustrare) and assess (recensere) the materials investigated from the following points of view: 1) institutional (Order, College, associated sodalities); 2) environmental acoustics (broader sound production within the spaces of the College and the rest of the city); 3) prosopographical (music prefects of the College and of the Marian Congregation); 4) surviving musical sources; 5) ceremonies with musical components (liturgical and paraliturgical ceremonies, graduations, congregational...

Abstract:
______________________________________________________________________________ MOTS-CLÉS DE L’AUTEUR : Anton T. Abstract:
This dissertation seeks to answer the question, what light does the ministry of William T. Brantly shed for understanding the breakup of the Triennial Convention? The dissertation argues that Brantly's longtime mission of uniting Christians in useful effort for a moral revolution exemplified the early vision of the Triennial Convention and that his inability as a Southerner to maintain this mission nationally among Baptists indicated grave disunity within the Convention as early as 1837. After chapter I introduces Brantly in light of current historiography, the dissertation consists of three parts--early history, theology, and later history. In the first part, encompassing the chapters 2 through 4, Brantly's personal mission is defined in the early South, illustrated in his first two Southern ministries, and climaxes in his efforts in Philadelphia. Two mentors and the death of his first wife influenced his personal mission. Two pastorates illustrated his twofold goal of organizing Baptists for missions and ministerial education. In Philadelphia, Brantly attained peace at First Baptist Church and then embodied his ideals in the formation of the Central Union Association. The formation of this new association in contradistinction to the venerable Philadelphia Association raises the question of heresy in doctrine and innovation in practice. These concerns lead into the second part--a theological examination of Brantly's thought. Chapters 5 and 6 examine his views on Calvinism and the authority of Scripture. Chapters 7 and 8 explore his justification of revivalistic new measures and benevolent societies. Chapters 9 and 10 demonstrate that Brandy's idea of evangelical unity possessed a denominational identity, a doctrinal boundary, and an even greater emphasis on active benevolence. The third part examines Brantly within the Triennial Convention. Chapter 11 discusses the Convention's transitional period (1826-1835), when sectionalism risked disunity, but compromise and silence nullified political strife and British interference. Chapters 12 and 13 examine the sectional and sectarian causes behind the visible disunity of the great Bible Convention of 1837. Brantly's stand for evangelical unity and subsequent defeat indicated grave disunity eight years before the Convention broke up.

Abstract:
This study begins by tracing the biographical histories of various persons who have been the subjects of Zulu praise poems. These histories are then studied in relation to the praise poems themselves. Various literary theories are then discussed and assessed to see how they have contributed to the study of written praise poems. The respective characteristics of oral and written praise poems are then identified and examined. The communicative aspects of praise poetry are also identified. The internal and external aspects of poetry are traced and examined in various examples of poetry. A clear distinction between oral and written poetry in terms of sender and recipient is drawn; poetry transmitted in writing can reach a wide audience at schools and universities, as well as the community at large while oral poetry does not have this potential. Imagery is widely employed in written praise poetry. These images range from references to wild animals such as the buffalo and elephant but also to domestic animals. The various colours of birds' feathers are also used in praise poetry to indicate celebrity and honour. Snakes, butterflies and house-crickets are used to symbolize certain movements of praised people, although some of these images may appear to be inappropriate. The study concludes with the examination of imagery as used in written Zulu praise poetry.

Abstract:
The subject of this study is a historical examination of the German faith-missions (in contemporary terms: evangelical missions) during the period of National Socialism. This topic has been neglected in scholarly research to date. This study describes how these mission agencies acted in the context of the unlawful regime of National Socialism. Due to a problematic source basis, the attitude the faith missions took towards the ursupation of power by Hitler is demonstrated based on their own periodical publications. It emerges that they largely positioned themselves at a distance to National Socialism, racism and anti-semitism. However these publications also demonstrate a distance to the “Confessing Church”. In the main body the examination of eight exemplary biographies based on detailed sources portrays an array of different positions which range from affinity to the NS-system to persecution. Furthermore the study shows that the issue of failure or guilt hardly played any role in the postwar period. This study leads to the conclusion the political ethics of the German faith missions were only rudimentarily developed, and only evinced themselves in an obedience to the powers that be and in a basically apolitical attitude.
