AbstractA triangle have special lines, such as angle bisectors and perpendicular bisector. These special lines are concurrent with their corresponding concurrent points, and called incenter, excenter and circumcenter. This paper discusses how to prove the collinear point of Sawayama-Thebault’s circle using excenter. Then, it is proved the three points collinear using simple ways, like similarity triangles and Thales theorem. Keywords: Sawayama-Thebault’s theorem, excenter, collinearAbstrakSegitiga memiliki beberapa garis-garis istimewa, diantaranya garis bagi, dan garis sumbu. Abstract:
THE EAST END OF LONDONwas not a common destination for the upper- or middle-class sightseer in the early nineteenth century. The requisite steamer ride down the Thames from London Bridge for the excursion out of the city to Greenwich would show, along the way, in the words of one tourist, “The Custom House and the Tower, the only prominent objects rising out of the dreary range of shabbiness which stretches along close to the water's edge” (Hawthorne 232–33). There was one exception to the habit of overlooking the East End: a significant proportion of the twenty-four million persons who passed through the Thames Tunnel between Wapping and Rotherhithe from 1827 to 1865 had indeed made the eastward excursion expressly for that purpose. Essential viewing at the time but little studied since, the history of the Thames Tunnel indicates the stakes and the consequences of remapping the urban topography of London during the era when middle-class tourism was being invented. Comprised of two 1200-foot-long arched passageways joined by a wall of open arches in an overall brickworked space of 22 1/2 feet high by 38 feet wide (Bobrick 58), the Tunnel was unique among the obligatory sights of the city in that it was also a practical thoroughfare employed as such almost wholly by the working classes. It was open twenty-four hours a day, and, as one visitor noted, it offered the unusual experience of emerging “in the midst of one of the most unintelligible, forlorn, and forsaken districts of London or the world” (Catlin 2: 112–13; qtd. in Altick 373), the docklands and slums of the East End. Through a half-century as a symbolic hub of London life from the years of its design and excavation (1824–43) to its conversion to a railway tunnel on the East London Line in 1869, the Thames Tunnel mobilized the tensions in the modernizing city between technological progress and social repression into a dense network of underground myths.

Abstract:
We consider the simplest model of a passive biped walking down a slope given by the equations of switched coupled pendula (McGeer T. 1990 Passive dynamic walking. Int. J. Robot. Res. 9 , 62–82. ( doi:10.1177/027836499000900206 )). Following the fundamental work by Garcia (Garcia et al . 1998 J. Biomech. Eng . 120 , 281. ( doi:10.1115/1.2798313 )), we view the slope of the ground as a small parameter γ ≥ 0. When γ = 0, the system can be solved in closed form and the existence of a family of cycles (i.e. potential walking cycles) can be computed in closed form. As observed in Garcia et al. (Garcia et al . 1998 J. Biomech. Eng . 120 , 281. ( doi:10.1115/1.2798313 )), the family of cycles disappears when γ increases and only isolated asymptotically stable cycles (walking cycles) persist. However, no mathematically complete proofs of the existence and stability of walking cycles have been reported in the literature to date. The present paper proves the existence and stability of a walking cycle (long-period gait cycle, as termed by McGeer) by using the methods of perturbation theory for maps. In particular, we derive a perturbation theorem for the occurrence of stable fixed points from 1-parameter families in two-dimensional maps that can be of independent interest in applied sciences.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Ritz upper bound to eigenvalues of Hermitian operators is essential for many applications in science. It is a staple of quantum chemistry and physics computations. The lower bound devised by Temple in 1928 [G. Temple,Proc. R. Soc. A Math. Phys. Eng. Sci.119, 276–293 (1928)] is not, since it converges too slowly. The need for a good lower-bound theorem and algorithm cannot be overstated, since an upper bound alone is not sufficient for determining differences between eigenvalues such as tunneling splittings and spectral features. In this paper, after 90 y, we derive a generalization and improvement of Temple’s lower bound. Numerical examples based on implementation of the Lanczos tridiagonalization are provided for nontrivial lattice model Hamiltonians, exemplifying convergence over a range of 13 orders of magnitude. This lower bound is typically at least one order of magnitude better than Temple’s result. Its rate of convergence is comparable to that of the Ritz upper bound. It is not limited to ground states. These results complement Ritz’s upper bound and may turn the computation of lower bounds into a staple of eigenvalue and spectral problems in physics and chemistry.

Abstract:
Has a dead man any use for money? Is it possible for a dead man to have money? What world does a dead man belong to? ‘Tother world. What world does money belong to? This world. How can money be a corpse’s? Can a corpse own it, want it, spend it, claim it, miss it?— Gaffer Hexam, Our Mutual FriendWHILE FISHING CORPSES out of the fast-flowing Thames, itself a symbol of death,1 in order to probe their pockets, Gaffer Hexam makes sharp reference to a long-standing distinction regarding the limits of earthly possession. Some of Dickens’s readers would have been quite ready to connect Gaffer’s remarks to Bunyan’s story of Christian’s exodus from the commerce and bustle of the earthly city and his crossing of the river of death that flows before the gates of the celestial city. Others might have considered the riverman’s musings as somehow referring to St. Paul’s saying that “the end of those things [wealth] is death” (qtd. in Welsh 59).2 In the presentation of Gaffer’s ghastly career, however, Dickens points out a dislocation from these earlier views: the riverman desecrates the “muffled human form” he finds just as he truncates (if not turns inside-out) what was once the afterlife’s principal judgment of the use of riches in this lower world (44; bk. 1, ch. 1). According to the text, Gaffer, in sharply dividing spiritual transactions from material ones, and the soul from his or her former possessions, only further mires himself in the “slime and ooze” of the commercial river (43; bk. 1, ch. 1), enabling decay to encroach more aggressively on life.

Abstract:
We conduct a convergence analysis for the estimation of inertial lift force on a spherical particle suspended in flow through a straight square duct using the finite element method. Specifically, we consider the convergence of an inertial lift force approximation with respect to a range of factors including the truncation of the domain, the resolution of the tetrahedral mesh and the boundary conditions imposed at the (truncated) ends of the domain. Additionally, we compare estimates obtained via the Lorentz reciprocal theorem with those obtained via a direct integration of fluid stress over the particle surface. Abstract: This research aimed to investigate Mathematics textbooks published from the late century XIX until the century XX, concerning the content of numerical fields, focusing on the extension from the rational to the real field. In the study, we tried to observe how geometry was explored in such books to address that issue. More precisely, taking the Thales' theorem, which relates the geometric and algebraic approach by measuring, research tries to find indications regarding measurability. To accomplish this proposal, seven Mathematics textbooks published within the aforementioned period were selected: Elementos de Geometria e Trigonometria Rectilínea, C. B. Ottoni, 1904; Elementos de Geometria, F.I.C, 1923; Curso de Mathematica, E. Roxo, C. Thiré e J. C. Mello e Souza, 1940-1942; Matemática - Curso Moderno, A. Quintella, 1960-1963; Matemática - Curso Ginasial, O. Sangiorgi, 1968-1970; A Conquista da Matemática, J. R. Giovanni e B. Castrucci, 1985; e Matemática, L. M. P Imenes e M. Lellis, 1999. Soon afterwards, each collection was analyzed, observing the geometric approach that was given to the real numbers, particularly in the Thales' Theorem. In that analysis it was noticed that most of the selected textbooks in the research presented the Thales' theorem but its demonstration was restricted to the case in which the segments were commensurable. However, the first analyzed book makes a discussion on the demonstration for both cases, commensurable and incommensurable. It was possible to notice that through that period, the topic was being lessened in its precision in the analyzed school manuals. It's plausible that the underlying idea to the Thales' theorem, linked to conditions of proportionality between segments, that is, segment measurement, can be a way to introducing positive real numbers...
Abstract: This doctoral thesis aims to analyze the constitution of a school reading model established by the Reading School Collection: Series Thales de Andrade of "Companhia Editora Nacional". The books that comprise it are: "Ler brincando", "Espelho", "Vida na roça", "Trabalho", "Saudade", "Campo e cidade", and "Alegria", from author Thales Castanho de Andrade. The books were intended for teaching and learning in Brazilian schools during the twentieth century. They present similar characteristics among them, instituting a school reading model presented and grouped in the collection, defined from educational, social and cultural values of the early twentieth century. The reading model was designed for isolated rural schools at that time. For the analysis we studied the materiality of books (Chartier); editorial documents regarding policies for acquisition of books between the State and the publishing house; in the search of intended readers, found in the data analysis of the publisher, the author and the books themselves; and the publishing market. According to Roger Chartier (1991), theoretical-methodological support of this Thesis, the methodology is focused on understanding, handling and study of texts, printed in various forms, in their historical and social context, studying the text itself and the folders that support it. Thus, it was sought to understand the text from the reading protocols and to reconstitute the process by which the book makes sense considering the relations among three poles: the text, the object supporting it, and the practice that takes it. This work allows understanding the characteristics of books that make up the Collection and the ways in which it establishes a school reading model. This model was present in the characteristics of books, in their materiality, issues and themes, layout and development of texts and in the educational...
Abstract: The aim of this research is to comphehend how Saudade, written by Thales Castanho de Andrade, constitutes an important book of the brazilian literary production made for children, once it was used as pedagogical reading in Elementary Schools during the period from 1918 to 1932. To enlighten what factors contributed to make Saudade so important as a reference in the pedagogical literature, I analysed the 2nd and 17th editions of the book, published en 1920 and 1932, respectively. The analyses will be held by Roger Chartier's ideas, approaching the "cultural history". According to Chartier (1991), this approachfocuses on the comprehension, manipulation and study of printed texts in several ways, and also on its historical and social contexts. Saudade was written in a historical epoch which makes na entry of the pedagogical publishing, from which originates the brazilian literary production made fr children as a literary order. The book was destinated to pedagogical reading on the brazilian Elementary Schols; being used, mainly, in the Estates of São Paulo, Paraná, ceará and in the Federal District, according to the Education Society Magazine, from 1923. The novel was produced in a time of great effervescence on the economy, culture, politics and education, and was linked to the process of ruralism. The author of Saudade, piracicabano, was writer and educator, keeping relations of frienship or docial companionship with important people for education in Brazil; among them, Sampaio Dória, Sud Mennucci, Monteiro Lobato and Lourenço Filho. In this research, I considered the words of Roger Chartier that say it is necessary to join two perspectives: studying the text itself and the other printed matters that support it.

This research aimed to investigate Mathematics textbooks published from the late century XIX until the century XX, concerning the content of numerical fields, focusing on the extension from the rational to the real field.

Abstract:In this work we study the families of constrained systems with regular impasse surface, the normal forms of its "typical"points and the respectively phase portrait. We see some results about the genericity of these points and the structural stability of a constrained system. We broach the theme in a simple way: we introduce a constrained system and a family of a constrained systems, and so, we study the normal forms of its "typical"points through two line fields, which become essential for the subject. We use the Peixoto's Theorem (adapted for this subject) to characterize a structural stable of constrained systems. In the chapter 3, we make a stratification of the impasse surface and, as a last result, we see that stratification is genericity (in the set of all families of constrained systems).

Wetering, Ernst. Rembrandt. The Painter Thinking. Edited by Wardy Poelstra. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462981522.

Abstract:
Even during the artist's lifetime, contemporary art lovers considered Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) to be an exceptional artist. In this revelatory sequel to the acclaimed Rembrandt: The Painter at Work, renowned Rembrandt authority Ernst van de Wetering investigates the painter's considerations that determined the striking changes in his development from an early age onwards. This gorgeously illustrated book explores how Rembrandt achieved mastery by systematic exploration of the 'foundations of the art of painting'. According to written sources from the seventeenth century, which were largely misinterpreted until now, these 'foundations' were considered essential at that time. From his first endeavours in painting, Rembrandt embarked on a journey past these foundations, thus becoming the 'pittore famoso', whom Count Cosimo the Medici visited at the end of his life. Rembrandt never stopped searching for solutions to the pictorial problems that confronted him; this led over time to radical changes that cannot simply be attributed to stylistic evolution or natural development. In a quest as rigorous and novel as the artist's, Van de Wetering reveals how Rembrandt became the revolutionary painter that would continue to fascinate the art world. This ground breaking exploration reconstructs Rembrandt's theories and methods, shedding new light both on the artist's exceptional accomplishments and on the theory and practice of painting in the Dutch Golden Age. Everyone who is interested in the art of painting should read this phenomenal book, because it was written with incredible knowledge and experience on the subject. It shows in a clear and simple way how Rembrandt worked and the things he had to take into account. At the same time it offers a fantastic sample of Rembrandt's life's work, thanks to the well-chosen selection of illustrations. David Rijser, NRC Handelsblad

Abstract:
This is a condensed history of thermodynamics and kinetic-molecular theory in Boltzmann’s times and earlier. In the second half of the nineteenth century, there was a widely shared belief in the kinetic-molecular nature of heat. This belief extended to the generally educated public, thanks to popular accounts such as John Tyndall’s Heat considered as a mode of motion (1863). There still was no consensus on the precise form of this motion. For instance, many French physicists persisted in favoring Ampère’s old vibrational picture. Also, there was no consensus on the fruitfulness of the kinetic-molecular theories. Most physicists did not need more than macroscopic thermodynamics, and there were voices, toward the end of the century, to denounce the disproportion between the difficulty of the kinetic-molecular theories and the amount of usable results. Boltzmann had to face such criticism although he was not alone in his quest for a comprehensive kinetic-molecular view of nature.

Compton, John W. The End of Empathy. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190069186.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The End of Empathy develops a theoretical framework to explain both the rise of white Protestant social concern in the latter part of the nineteenth century and its sudden demise at the end of the twentieth. The theory proceeds from the premise that religious conviction by itself is rarely sufficient to motivate empathetic political behavior. When believers do act empathetically—for example, by championing reforms that transfer resources or political influence to less privileged groups within society—it is typically because strong religious institutions have compelled them to do so. For much of the twentieth century, the “mainline” Protestant denominations and ecumenical groups performed this role. At key historical junctures—the Progressive Era, the New Deal, the civil rights movement—the nation’s informal religious establishment used its authority to mobilize rank-and-file churchgoers on behalf of government programs that increased economic opportunity and promoted civic inclusion. When this establishment collapsed in the late 1960s—thanks to a confluence of trends in the labor market, higher education, and residential mobility—it produced a large population of white suburbanites who had little reason to seek out mainline Protestant churches or heed their advice on the burning social questions of the day. The churches that flourished in the new age of personal autonomy were those that preached against attempts by government to promote a more equitable distribution of wealth and political authority.

Abstract:
Sélima Lejri is similarly interested in the coexistence of long-established folklore beliefs in demonism and witchcraft and the emerging scientific etiologies propounded by the physicians of the time. Lejri shows that it is thanks to Edward Jorden’s A Briefe Discourse of A Disease Called the Suffocation of the Mother (1603) that the interpretations of demonic vexation started to give way to the rational alternative of hysteria. It was then that Shakespeare’s interest in the medical theories of physiology, mainly humorism, became palpable. This testifies to the considerable influence of Timothy Bright’s or Edward Jorden’s ideas. Within this context of early modern scientific ‘revolution’ that ushered in the end of witch-hunting and gave large credit to reason over superstition, Shakespeare’s representation of the female body in his Jacobean plays bears the contemporary stamp of his new sources of information. It is Shakespeare’s response to such contemporary scientific theories that Lejri’s chapter aims at tackling through the particular example of Hysterica Passio, a feminine disease much discussed at the time and explicitly referenced in King Lear.

Chapter 10 briefly articulates the worldview that’s implied (or at least suggested) by the rest of the book. Very roughly, the idea is that neo-positivists can articulate their worldview with a counterfactual that says something roughly like the following: “If there had been a plenitudinous platonic realm (i.e., a plenitudinous realm of abstract objects like numbers and sets and propositions and so on), and if a certain kind of mereological universalism had been true (in particular, if there had existed a huge plurality of tiny mereological simples and unrestricted compositions of those simples, so that there were, e.g., simples arranged tablewise and catwise and moleculewise and so on, and there were also tables and cats and molecules and trout-turkeys and so on), then quantum mechanics would have been true, and evolution theory would have been true, and Zermelo-Frankel set theory would have been true, and so on.”

Full text
Abstract:
The reception of Mendeleev’s periodic system in Sweden was not a dramatic episode. The system was accepted almost without discussion, but at the same time with no exclamation marks or any other outbursts of enthusiasm. There are but a few weak short-lived critical remarks. That was all. I will argue that the acceptance of the system had no overwhelming effect on chemical practice in Sweden. At most, it strengthened its characteristics. It is actually possible to argue that chemistry in Sweden was more essential for the periodic system than the other way around. My results might therefore suggest that we perhaps have to reevaluate the role of Mendeleev’s system in the history of chemistry. Chemistry in Sweden at the end of the nineteenth century can be characterized as a classifying science, with chemists very skilled in analysis, and as mainly an atheoretical science, which treated theories at most only as hypothesis—the slogan of many chemists being “facts persist, theories vanish.” Thanks to these characteristics, by the end of the nineteenth century, chemistry in Sweden had developed into, it must be said, a rather boring chemistry. This is obviously not to say that it is boring to study such a chemistry. Rather, it gives us an example of how everyday science, a part of science too often neglected but a part that constitutes the bulk of all science done, is carried out. One purpose of this study is to see how a theory, considered to be important in the history of chemistry, influenced everyday science. One might ask what happened when a daring chemistry met a boring chemistry. What happened when a theory, which had been created by a chemist who has been described as “not a laboratory chemist,” met an atheoretical experimental science of hard laboratory work and, as was said, the establishment of facts? Furthermore, could we learn something about the role of the periodic system per se from the study of such a meeting? Mendeleev’s system has often been considered important for teaching, and his attempts to write a textbook are often taken as the initial step in the chain of thoughts that led to the periodic system.

Interiors, intended as the discipline able to build (not only) physical connections in between spaces, people and objects, has deeply changed in the last decades, assuming new roles and aims. Both theory and practice, thanks to its continuous updating, have being able to generate innovative and collaborative insight and solutions, moving fast towards new contents, new tools and different strategies focused on the contemporaneity. In this framework, retail design, both in research and profession, is particularly interesting as an expression of this disciplinary shift, with an approach characterized by multidisciplinarity, experimentation and a strong relational dimension. The change in the significance of goods is a process that, ever since the end of the Industrial Revolution, has triggered far-reaching changes in society as the term has lost any meaning in relation to its purely functional character and increasingly come to represent symbolic and cultural contents. “Practice of Consumption and Spaces for Goods” has the aim to investigate contemporary retail spaces as complex places combining many aspects that go beyond the spatial and functional to include the physical, social, cultural and economic.

With the advent of Web 2.0 and with the development of interactive tools that allowed users to express opinions and suggestions on different topics, the way to do business, socialize with other people and also the academic environment, both in terms of teaching and research, is changing. In companies, thanks to interactive tools of Web 2.0, managers are in a close contact with end customers to improve the product/service. In the academic world, this technology can be used exploiting e-learning platforms enriched with interactive virtual channels thus promoting the methodology of learning by doing and the constructivist theory of collective participation of students in the knowledge construction. In this context it is also possible to develop a collaborative research between academics and scientists. The number of websites of the science 2.0, with scientific cooperations and the creation and distribution of quality papers in journals, is growing. Also, the ability to manage complex scientific projects and seek funding sources is increasing. Abstract:
The purpose of this chapter is to study the elements of communication, and to explore the interrelations of interpersonal communication and effective leadership applications. Thanks to the leadership evolution, divergent leadership methodologies have rejuvenated classical studies. An empirical analysis of leadership traits, behaviors, characteristics, types, and styles (e.g., approaches) will be reviewed. Given the theories of leadership, a critical analysis on power and influence are also necessary to understand the sensitivities and delicacies of the leader-follower relationships. Because speaking, listening, writing, and reading are the basic forms of communication, the dynamics of communication is fundamental and an integral element to effective leadership application. Executives, directors, mangers, other leadership staffers, will find this chapter interesting as it aims to link the ideologies of communication-centered and interpersonal trust perspectives to leadership theologies. When analyzing the pragmatics of interpersonal communication, this chapter will examine the behavioral, attitudinal, cognitive-perceptual, and psychosocial processes that attribute to the communicable factors of one's thoughts, ideas, feelings, emotions, motives, attitudes, behaviors, and actions. This chapter may assist leaders in developing social and emotional intelligences. With the relentless pressure to change an organization, emotional and social intelligences give us an entirely new way of looking at the root causes of organizational dysfunctions. The scope and depth of EI and SI, employs interpersonal interactions that cultivates trust and continuity through an exchange of meaningful messages.

Should the role of our classrooms be to serve as dumping grounds for tired old theories, or as launching pads for unfettered inquiries into new exciting worlds? Should we continue to throw out theory and facts, and set answers, or should we embark on a never-ending quest for new questions and insights? On obtaining a degree or diploma, each student should know how to answer questions, but how many know how to ask questions? What would they say when asked “what did you learn in school today?”

Abstract:
In this paper a design method of a cylindrical fuselage barrel in grid structure to fabricate in composite material is illustrated. The approach can be divided in two phases. In the first step, a lattice structure, that is a grid structure with ribs only and without a skin, is sized thanks to an analytical approach. The independent variables to optimize are five: number of helical ribs, number of circumferential ribs, rib height, circumferential rib thickness, helical rib thickness. Some geometric constraints on the dimensions of the ribs are introduced. The best lattice structure is individuated by an analytical theory due to professor Vasiliev of the Central Research Institute of Special Machine Building (CRISM), the leading Russian Composite Center. The theory is based on the calculation of four safety factors for the helical rib strength, axisymmetric global buckling, non axisymmetric global buckling and the helical rib local buckling. Successively, a finite element analysis is performed in order to verify the analytical results. A software tool developed in Matlab environment prepares the finite element model, runs the finite element solver (MSC/Nastran) and reads the results. In the second step, an outer skin is added and the best lay-up for it is chosen; the maximum failure index for the skin laminate is calculated too. At the end the structure with the minimum weight and all margins of safety positive is individuated. The skin is extremely light so as to minimize overall weight. In the finite element model ribs and skin are simulated with beam and shell elements respectively; for the skin a common high-strength graphite/epoxy composite material is used, for the ribs an isotropic material with properties derived from experimental data. A grid-stiffened structure allows to reduce the structural mass of about 20% respect to a metallic reference baseline. Moreover, it can be quickly constructed by using filament winding technology; the process can be highly automated and the manufacturing costs can be reduced of the 30%.

Abstract:
Quality Control (QC) is one of the most important phases in the production process. In tradition, the workpiece must be inspected for dimension and shape errors in the QC lab or Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) after being machined, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive, especially for large scale parts. Thus the only practical way to do that is to migrate the critical primary inspection operations upstream from the QC lab or CMM to the production floor, and that’s what On-Machine Measurement (OMM) does. OMM technology can inspect the workpiece on its operating station by motion control and the position detection function of CNC machine tool, by which the measuring error caused by the misalignment between measuring datum and manufacturing datum can be avoided accurately. Therefore, it is a feasible way to achieve the real-time control of the manufacturing process and improve the manufacturing accuracy and efficiency. The servo axes of multi-axis CNC machine tool might be redundant for being used in OMM, which will result in that one measurement task could be done by different servo motion schemes. In addition, the map between the machine accuracy and measuring accuracy has not been found out previously. Thus, how to determine metering schemes to measure a workpiece with high accuracy and efficiency is one of the most important problems and also a hotspot for everybody. To solve this problem, a generation method of task-oriented OMM scheme is proposed. Utilizing multi-body system theory and transformation of homogeneous coordinates, a function relationship between the geometrical characteristic of workpiece as independent variables and motions of machine tool as dependent variables is established. All possible metering schemes are obtained by analyzing the solution of functional equation. Then the performance of measurement scheme can be evaluated by comparing the measuring errors of each scheme after building a mapping relationship between the machine tool volumetric errors and measuring errors. In the end, a case study was accomplished, and the correctness and efficiency of the methodology has been verified.

Abstract:
In 1969, S. G. Brush and C. W. F. Everitt published a historical review, that was reprinted as subchapter 5.5 Maxwell, Osborne Reynolds, and the radiometer, in Stephen G. Brush’s famous book The Kind of Motion We Call Heat. This review covers the history of the explanation of the forces acting on the vanes of Crookes radiometer up to the end of the 19th century. The forces moving the vanes in Crookes radiometer (which are not due to radiation pressure, as initially believed by Crookes and Maxwell) have been recognized as thermal effects of the remaining gas by Reynolds — from his experimental and theoretical work on Thermal Transpiration and Impulsion, in 1879 — and by the development of the differential equations describing Thermal Creeping Flow, induced by tangential stresses due to a temperature gradient on a solid surface by Maxwell, earlier in the same year, 1879. These fundamental physical laws have not yet made their way into the majority of textbooks of heat transfer and fluid mechanics so far. A literature research about the terms of Thermal Transpiration and Thermal Creeping Flow, in connection with the radiometer forces, resulted in a large number of interesting papers; not only the original ones as mentioned in subchapter 5.5 of Brush’s book, but many more in the earlier twentieth century, by Martin Knudsen, Wilhelm Westphal, Albert Einstein, Theodor Sexl, Paul Epstein and others. The forces as calculated from free molecular flow (by Knudsen), increase linearly with pressure, while the forces from Maxwell’s Thermal Creeping Flow decrease with pressure. In an intermediate range of pressures, depending on the characteristic geometrical dimensions of flow channels or radiometer vanes, an appropriate interpolation between these two kinds of forces, as suggested by Wilhelm Westphal and later by G. Hettner, goes through a maximum. Albert Einstein’s approximate solution of the problem happens to give the order of magnitude of the forces in the maximum range. A comprehensive formula and a graph of the these forces versus pressure combines all the relevant theories by Knudsen (1910), Einstein (1924), Maxwell (1879) (and Hettner (1926), Sexl (1928), and Epstein (1929) who found mathematical solutions for Maxwells creeping flow equations for non-isothermal spheres and circular discs, which are important for thermophoresis and for the radiometer). The mechanism of Thermal Creeping Flow will become of increasing interest in micro- and submicro-channels in various new applications, so it ought to be known to every graduate student of heat transfer in the future. That’s one of the reasons why some authors have recently questioned the validity of the classical Navier-Stokes, Fourier, and Fick equations: Dieter Straub (1996) published a book on an Alternative Mathematical Theory of Non-equilibrium Phenomena. Howard Brenner (since 2005) wrote a number of papers, like Navier-Stokes, revisited, and Bi-velocity hydrodynamics, explicitly pointing to the forces acting on the vanes of the lightmill, to thermophoresis and related phenomena. Franz Durst (since 2006) also developed modifications of the classical Navier-Stokes equations. So, Reynolds, Maxwell, and the radiometer may finally have initiated a revision of the fundamental equations of thermofluiddynamics and heat- and mass transfer.
