We present three results in additive combinatorics, a recent field at the interface of combinatorics, harmonic analysis and analytic number theory. The unifying theme in our thesis is the detection of additive structure in arithmetic sets of low density, with an emphasis on quantitative aspects. Our first contribution is an improved density estimate for the problem, initiated by Bourgain and others, of finding a long arithmetic progression in a triple sumset. Our second result is a generalization of Sanders' bounds for Roth's theorem from the dense setting, to the setting of small doubling in an arbitrary abelian group. Finally, we extend the best known quantitative results for Roth's theorem in the primes, to all translation-invariant systems of equations of complexity one.

Full textIn this note, we give a proof for a variant of the functorial Deligne-Riemann-Roch theorem in positive characteristic based on ideas appearing in Pink and Rössler's proof of the Adams-Riemann-Roch theorem in positive characteristic (see [14]). The method of their proof appearing in [14], which is valid for any positive characteristic and which is completely different from the classical proof, will allow us to prove the functorial Deligne-Riemann-Roch theorem in a much easier and more direct way. Our proof is also partially compatible with Mumford's isomorphism

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to extend several fundamental theorems in Arakelov Geometry, known to hold for projective arithmetic varieties, to the extended frame of quasi-projective varieties. For this one uses the formalism proposed by Burgos-Kramer-Kuhn, that generalizes that of Gillet and Soulé. We mainly establish two results : 1. Finiteness property for heights attaches to hermitian line bundles, whose metrics are singular. The singularities are of some logarithmic type ; 2. Arithmetic Riemann-Roch formula for pointed stable curves, whose tanget bundle is endowed with the hyperbolic metric singular at the cusps. Furthermore, several examples are given related to 1 –in particular a generalization of a theorem due to Wolpert on the family hyperbolic metric- and to 2 –we compute special values of the Selberg zeta funcions of modular curves

Full textMy doctoral thesis explores the relationship between literature and historical witnessing. By focusing on the works of Primo Levi, Aharon Appelfeld, and Philip Roth (authors who relate in very different ways the trauma of the Holocaust), my research aims at investigating the enmeshment of aesthetic and epistemological issues. My comparative exploration of these authors is motivated by and allows for a conceptual layering of the problem along three distinct research axes : (1) each author maintains a different degree of autobiographical involvement with the genocidal facts he evokes, ranging from maximum directness (Levi) to an oblique post hoc distance (Roth) ; (2) each author thematizes the problem by framing fictional situations in which characters have to cope with the plastic tension of narrative recollection ; (3) there is a twofold factual link between the three authors consisting in (a) explicit or covert intertextual quotations (e.g. Levi and Appelfeld become characters in Roth’s "Operation Shylock") and, more significantly, (b) an under-investigated circular correspondence in which each of them discusses at length the gains and losses of (literary) historical witnessing. The core of my project, therefore, is grounded in the long-distance conversation on the reworking of memories between Aharon Appelfeld, Philip Roth and Primo Levi – a three-way conversation that perforce ceased with Levi’s death in 1987

Full textThis thesis represents a new approach for predicting plant disease in a plantation through combination of data fusion and spatio-temporal modelling. Plant disease is a major problem in the world of agriculture. Example in Malaysia, basalstem rot disease (BSR) caused by Ganoderma Boinense is the most serious disease for oil palm plantation in Malaysia. The fungus infects oil palm trees, initially causing yield loss and finally killing the trees. Various factors were previously reported to influence incidence of BSR, such as previous crops, techniques for replanting, types of soils and the age of trees. At present effective and sustainable management strategies to control BSR are hampered mainly by a lack of understanding of mechanisms of disease establishment, development and spread. The present research is an attempt to apply data fusion technique and temporal modelling in Geographical Information System (GIS) to investigate the behaviour of plant disease in a specific area (small skill area). This research will focus on how GIS can help to assess the distribution plant disease in a small scale plantation. With concurrent advances in global positioning systems (GPS) and the use of geographical Information Systems(GIS) techniques have provided powerful analysis tools for precision agriculture. Data for analysis were obtained from oil palm planting density experiments at MPOB research stations at Teluk Intan, Perak, Malaysia. In the case of BSR disease, the results of the predictive modelling show a significance correlation between predicted BSR diseases with visually observed BSR data. It found that the proposed predictive modelling has well predicted the presence of BSR disease. Although at the beginning stage of BSR diseases infection, the model has not fitted exactly the distribution of the disease, we believe that with the proper selection of the source of data, the performance of the model will be improved.Overall, the model has well predicted the presence of diseases with accuracy up to 98.9%

Full textThe contribution of this thesis is divided naturally into two parts. In Part I we generalise the work of Khuri-Makdisi (2004) on algorithms for divisor arithmetic on curves over fields to more general bases. We prove that the natural analogues of the results of Khuri-Makdisi continue to hold for relative effective Cartier divisors on projective schemes which are smooth of relative dimension one over an arbitrary affine Noetherian base scheme and that natural analogues of the algorithms remain valid in this context for a certain class of base rings. We introduce a formalism for such rings, which are characterised by the existence of a certain subset of the usual linear algebra operations for projective modules over these rings.Part II of this thesis is concerned with a type of Riemann-Roch problem for divisors on certain algebraic surfaces. Specifically we consider algebraic surfaces arising as the square or the symmetric square of a hyperelliptic curve of genus at least two over an (almost) arbitrary field. The main results are a decomposition of the spaces of global sections of certain divisors on such surfaces and explicit formulæ for the dimensions of the spaces of sections of these divisors. In the final chapter we present an algorithm which generates a basis for the space of global sections of such a divisor
