Abstract:
Various indicators suggest that poverty is a major obstacle to Nigeria’s socio-economic development. Poverty has persisted and several interventions have failed to yield significant improvement in Nigeria’s Human Development Index even in periods of economic growth. Plagued with the challenges of unemployment crises, climate change, conflict, fragility and violence, Nigeria (the most populous country in Africa) stands at a grave risk if poverty is not tackled. This paper explores seven theories of poverty in literature: The Culture of Poverty, Individual Deficiency Theory, Progressive Social Theory, Geographical Disparities Theory, Cyclical Interdependence Theory, Poverty Individualisation and the Theory of Social Exclusion /Cumulative Disadvantage. It reviews these theories by employing a qualitative and descriptive research approach in order to broaden the understanding of the complexities of the phenomenon of poverty from a global worldview and examine how these relate to the nature of poverty in Nigeria. It corroborates the fact that poverty in Nigeria is complex and multidimensional in its conceptualization and measurement, encompassing economic, social, cultural and psychological indicators. The paper therefore attempts to explore the phenomenon of poverty within the Nigerian context by examining these theoretical paradigms. It suggests an understanding of underlying causal factors of poverty in designing pro-poor programmes and a hydra-headed approach to tackle its menace effectively and progressively. It argues that poverty reduction is realizable by empowering people to develop resilience to cope and overcome it within the scope of their resources and capabilities.

Abstract:
In micro lens, the adaptive lenses are potential breakout in the future. The adaptive liquid lenses had been reported in several literatures. However, it’s regret for existing adaptive liquid lenses who can’t realize zoom synchronously keeping the image surface stable. For solving the problem a pair of all-silicone lenses called lens group was put forward. The lens group was firstly fabricated and assembled. The lens group was researched from theoretical calculation to find the synchronous relation between the front lens and the back lens. At last the lens group was seriously tested including its total focal lengths and image surface drifts. The theoretical researches and the testing result testified the all-silicone lens group was possible to facilitate the adaptive lens into applications.

Sommer, Thomas Anthony. "A theoretical and experimental study of the three-ring electrostatic electron lens." PDXScholar, 1990. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4137.

Full text
Abstract:
A theoretical and experimental study of the three-ring electrostatic lens is presented. The lens consists of three isolated ring-shaped conductors, equally spaced along a common axis of symmetry. When appropriate potentials are applied to the conductors an electric field is produced near the axis which is capable of focusing a collimated beam of electrons. In the theoretical study the charge density method is used to find a closed-form solution for the field. This method approximates the field by replacing each ring with an infinitely thin hoop of uniform charge. The radial and axial equations of motion are then solved numerically, and the paraxial values of focal length, focal distance and their second order aberrations are found. In the experimental study these focal quantities are determined by a ray tracing method that uses two grids placed in the beam path outside the field of the lens. One grid is placed in front of the lens while the other is placed behind it. The shadow pattern cast by the grids is then analyzed to find the focal properties. This method, which is independent of the type of lens being investigated, is also used on a plano-convex glass lens. Comparison of the experimental and theoretical results shows satisfactory agreement in both cases.

Braverman, Lily F. "Expanding the Theoretical Lenses of Addiction Treatment Through Art Therapy Practice." Digital Commons at Loyola Marymount University and Loyola Law School, 2015. https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/etd/166.

Full text
Abstract:
This research explores the connection and interaction between literature describing addiction theory and clinical art therapy practice. Literature spanning a wide variety of theoretical understandings of addiction and recovery was reviewed, as well as literature published on the use of art therapy with the substance abuse population. Using the review of the substance abuse literature as a base, key theoretical concepts were identified and formatted into a table that came to serve as a data coding system. Applying case study methodology, this coding system was then utilized as an analysis tool for the art therapy process and artwork of four clients in residential substance abuse treatment. Analysis of the data resulted in the emergence of five prominent themes amongst those listed in the coding system: 1) Intolerance of negative emotion 2) Problematic family dynamics 3) Traumatic experiences 4) Schemas and restructured cognitions and 5) Cultural issues. These findings were then examined in the context of the art therapy literature on substance abuse. The meanings derived from these findings make a case for greater integration between substance abuse literature and art therapy literature, illustrating the utility of clear and organized incorporation of theoretical ideas about addiction into art therapy with substance abuse clients.

Sova, Oleksandr. "Theoretical and experimental study of tunable liquid crystal lenses : wavefront optimization." Doctoral thesis, Université Laval, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/67581.

Abstract:
Adaptive optical systems have applications in various domains: imaging (zoom and autofocus), medicine (endoscopy, ophthalmology), virtual and augmented reality. Liquid crystal-based lenses have become a big part of adaptive optics industry as they have numerous advantages in comparison with traditional methods. Despite significant progress made over the past decades, certain performance and production limitations still exist. This thesis explores ways of overcoming these problems, considering two types of tunable lenses: liquid crystal lens using dielectric dividing principle and modal control lens. The introduction of this thesis presents the theory of liquid crystals and adaptive lenses, addressing existing liquid crystal lenses as well.In the first and second chapters of this work we demonstrate the results of theoretical modeling of double dielectric optically hidden liquid crystal lens design. We have studied the influence of geometrical parameters, such as thickness of liquid crystal cell, shape and dimensions of dielectrics forming the optically hidden layer, on the optical power of the lens. The dependences of optical power on the relative permittivity and conductivity of dielectrics were obtained. The behavior of such a lens in the presence of temperature variation was analyzed. We have further extended the concept of hidden dielectric layer to exploration of microstructures. Two systems of microlenses and microprisms have been simulated. The comparison of optical phase modulation dependence on spatial frequency of microstructures was obtained. Deviations from ideal wavefronts were evaluated in both cases. We also compared proposed designs with a standard interdigital electrode approach. Suggested devices could be used for continuous light steering or as tunable microlens arrays. In the third and fourth chapters we present our studies of tunable lenses based on modal control principle. We verified simulation results by comparing them with experimentally obtained dependences of optical power and root mean square spherical aberrations. We have explored the following modifications of conventional modal control lens: 1) additional powered ring electrode; 2) floating disk electrode; 3) combination of the first two cases. The influence of each modification was studied and explained. Simulation results showed that using the combination of additional electrodes along with optimal powering technique -the wavefront could be corrected within the entire clear aperture of the lens. Modified lens meets low aberration requirements for ophthalmic applications (for example, intraocular implant). Finally, a new design of a wide aperture tunable modal control Fresnel lens was investigated. Imaging performance of the proposed Fresnel lens was evaluated and compared with the reference lens built using traditional modal control approach. The prototype device demonstrated the increase of optical powerin comparison with a conventional modal control lens of the same aperture size. A theoretical model and numerical simulations of the Fresnel lens design were presented. Simulations demonstrated a possibility of noticeable image quality improvement obtained using optimized voltages and frequencies.

Aysegul, Alayat. "Rental Housing Policy Norms in Stockholm Through A Queer Theoretical Lense." Thesis, KTH, Urbana och regionala studier, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-176476.

Full text
Abstract:
Swedish Instrument of Governance and Housing Sustention Responsibility state that everyone living in Stockholm County has the right to housing. This thesis deals with norms created by the first-, second-hand rental market and priority housing rules and regulations in the Stockholm County. Using a queer theoretical framework this thesis analyses the situation of young adults and students, elderly, homeless, LGBTQ and abused persons in housing market in relation to “housing for all” policy and suggests possible policy changes in order to make the rental housing market more inclusive. Queer theory asserts that subjects are precisely constituted by the existing power structures through socio-political arrangements that are based on assumptions. Urban planning by its nature also uses assumptions therefore it also reproduces accepted truths and risks generalizing heterogeneous social groups’ needs, these generalizations might also create cases that are insensitive to personal needs. According to queer theory identities change over time and individuals can belong to more than one category simultaneously and therefore rental housing market requires having awareness of fluidity. This study by using the queer theoretical framework, analyzes the situation of young adults and students, elderly, homeless, LGBTQ and abused persons in Stockholm’s rental housing market by using stories, interviews, policy documents, reports and statistical data to clarify how accepted truths/norms effects the constitution of housing categories, and how these housing categories, for that matter norms that are created by rules and regulations, exclude/include different social groups from the rental housing market. In order to fulfil the laws for “housing for all”, there is a need for more affordable rental housing units as well as regulation luxury renovations, supporting research that is related to housing prices and so on. The laws can also be fulfilled by changing in the norm for rental housing tenants; this can be done decreasing the demands for being eligible tenants including requirement on income for regular queue and requirement of study phase of 50 percent for students. For the second-hand rental housing there is a need of a system that minimizes possible discrimination, a database of accessible housing units could help those that need accessibility issue solved and a wider variety with a bigger housing stock for homeless could benefit homeless that want to change their realities. Concerning usage of housing stock in Stockholm, policy changes like “kompis kontrakt” make it possible to use the existing rental housing stock more efficiently. The conclusions of this study shows that the requirements set by the rules and regulations on first-hand rental housing excludes individuals that have record of non-payment related to housing, an income that is lower than the total of the monthly rent and 4 675 SEK, and that are not credit worthy. For many including homeless sensitiveness to personal needs are critical. The results show that there is number of shelters in Stockholm County is insufficient and the aid given by the social services to shelters reproduces gender binaries through laws.

Abstract:

This study examines the diffraction properties of the generalized split N-sector lens originating from the configuration of Meslin’s experiment and the Billet’s split bi-sector lens. In Billet’s N-split lens, the type of lens splitting selected causes the interference pattern of equidistant straight lines in the original Billet’s lens to form an N-fold angularly distributed pattern with an angle difference of 2π/N. For an odd number of splitting N, there is an additional angle shift of π/N for the azimuthally distributed patterns of equidistant straight lines. In other words, there are two kinds of symmetry even for simple splitting operations. On the other hand, the peak intensity distribution in the central portion resembles a concentric-circle-like pattern, when N is large as a result of N-beam interference. As to the Meslin’s N-split lens, the amplitude and the phase follow and respectively when the splitting is with double of an even number. On the other hand, for the case of double of an odd number, the relation changes to hold with and , where the optical units u and v are used to denote the z- and the radial coordinates respectively and the azimuthal angle is ψ. Additional symmetry properties are also explored and identified, particularly for the distributions on the focal plane. Moreover, the Bessel beam is studied and by the use of the Billet’s N-split lens distributing the focal points circularly on the focal plane. This study explores the characteristics of beam propagation and analytically derives the asymptotic characteristics of beam propagation based on the stationary phase approximation and the moment-free Filon-type method. Results show that the unique Billet’s N-split lens can generate a quasi-Bessel beam if the number of splitting N is large enough, e.g., N≧24. This study also explores the diffraction efficiency of corresponding quasi-Bessel beam and the influence of aperture size. The potential advantage of proposed split-lens approach is that, unlike the classical means of annual aperture, this simple lens approach allows a much large throughput in creating the Bessel beam and hence the Bessel beam could have more optical energy. The diffraction behaviors of cylindrical vector beam, particularly the focal shifts further caused by different polarizations, namely linear, radial and azimuthal, are also investigated. The variation of focal shifts associated with numerical aperture and the Fresnel number is also explored. It is found that with a low numerical aperture, e.g., 0.1, the focal shifts associated by the radially and azimuthally polarized illuminations are nearly the same, while they are about 1.65 times as large as that of linearly polarized illumination. As the system is of high numerical aperture, e.g., 0.9, the focal shifts associated by the radially and azimuthally polarized illuminations have ~10% difference and their ratios with that of linearly polarized illumination become double in comparing with the case of low numerical aperture. In general, azimuthally polarized illumination has the largest power in shifting the focal point.

Abstract:
This document condenses the results obtained when 3D printing lenses and their potential use as diffraction gratings using Digital Light Processing (DLP), as an additive manufacturing technique. This project investigated the feasibility of using DLP additive manufacturing for producing custom designed lenses and gratings. DLP was identified as the preferred manufacturing technology for gratings fabrication. Diffraction gratings take advantage of the anisotropy, inherent in additive manufacturing processes, to produce a collated pattern of multiple fringes on a substrate with completely smooth surfaces. The gratings are transmissive and were manufactured with slit separations of 10, 25 and 50 μm. More than 50 samples were printed at various build angles and mechanically treated for maximum optical transparency. The variables of the irradiance equation were obtained from photographs taken with an optical microscope. These values were used to estimate theoretical irradiance patterns of a diffraction grating and compared against the experimental 3-D printed grating. The resulting patterns were found to be remarkably similar in amplitude and distance between peaks when compared to theoretical values.

Abstract:
Abstract The theoretical fundamentals of diffractive solid immersion lenses (dSILs) were revised and adapted to a new application: the direct single-step chemistry-assisted creation of binary dSILs in silicon with a focused ion beam (FIB). Current results were able to prove the general functionality of this technique, but also showed the limitations still present. These limitations were identified; the underlying problems were analyzed and were addressed by optimizing several aspects of the process. The presented dSIL has a diameter of 150 ìm and is created in 15 minutes of processing time. It is designed for a sample thickness of 70 µm, which can be well adjusted if needed. For this sample thickness, the theoretical numerical aperture is about 2.5, offering a significant improvement in resolution. Furthermore a comparison of diffractive and refractive solid immersion lenses is presented, both created in a similar process. Apart from general aspects of dSILs and rSILs (refractive SILs), details of the designs presented in this work are compared. This leads to the insight of which method (dSIL or rSIL) has its advantages for which type of application.

Abstract:
In this paper, fluidic models of liquid-core liquid-cladding lens formed in a circular chamber are reported. The models cover two cases: the circular chamber is symmetrical and asymmetrical to the channel axis. Experiments were also carried out to verify our models. The results agree well with the theoretical analysis. The test device with a circular lens chamber with 1-mm diameter and 100-μm height was fabricated in PDMS. The design of a circular chamber is demonstrated to develop a perfect arc shape of the lens interface, which can be mathematically pre-defined. The focusing abilities of lens formed in these two different geometries are compared. We found that the asymmetrical design, in which the channel is offseted from the axis of chamber, can develop a lens with shorter focal length. This design has an important significance for on-chip focusing.

Abstract:
Microfluidic devices can take advantage of novel physics only available at the micro-scale. As a result, new physical models for the flow behaviour within these devices are required. In recent years micron resolution particle image velocimetry (Micro-PIV) has established itself as a reliable verification tool for these models. Micro-PIV measures the velocity profile across a single 2D plane within a microfluidic device. Here, Micro-PIV data is obtained from several planes within a device to create a complete mapping of the flow field. Combination of the data from all the planes allows the flow profile on the plane perpendicular to the original images to be studied and the volumetric flowrate through the device to be measured. By fitting the measured velocities to known flow profiles, the width and depth of the device can also be measured with sub micron precision. The technique is applied to an isotropically etched microchannel, where the results are compared to an independent computational fluid dynamics solution. Good agreement is found between the two data sets. The technique is then demonstrated in a more complex flow in a mixing channel device. In order to image an entire device a large field of view may be required. This dictates the use of low magnification lenses, which in turn have a large depth of field. A theoretical model for the measured Micro-PIV velocity demonstrates that, if care is taken when measuring near to curved walls, the use of these low magnification lenses does not significantly reduce the quality of the data obtained.

Le Maux, Laurent. Bagehot for Central Bankers. Institute for New Economic Thinking Working Paper Series, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36687/inetwp147.

Full text
Abstract:
Walter Bagehot (1873) published his famous book, Lombard Street, almost 150 years ago. The adage “lending freely against good collateral at a penalty rate” is associated with his name and his book has always been set on a pedestal and is still considered as the leading reference on the role of lender of last resort. Nonetheless, without a clear understanding of the theoretical grounds and the institutional features of the British banking system, any interpretation of Bagehot’s writings remains vague if not misleading—which is worrisome if they are supposed to provide a guideline for policy makers. The purpose of the present paper is to determine whether Bagehot’s recommendation remains relevant for modern central bankers or whether it was indigenous to the monetary and banking architecture of Victorian times.
