Over the past half-century, Noam Chomsky has established a powerful intellectual presence in two apparently unrelated domains of discourse — the field of theoretical linguistics and the arena of anti-establishment politics. This paper examines Chomsky’s use of metaphor across these domains, arguing that in Chomsky’s work metaphor enables an undercover, perhaps even classically ‘anarchic’ dialogue between disciplines. Organizationally as well as psychologically, the two major inquiries into human nature undertaken by him are, the paper suggests, structured and unified in relation to each other

Williams's claim that practical reasons are internal reasons is analysed and interpreted as a neutral analysis, not distinctively Humean, of constraints on the concept of a practical reason. It is argued that within these constraints it remains possible to defend the impartiality of moral reasons. A reflective account of such reasons can be given in ‘pragmatic’ rather than ‘semantic’ terms. Paralleling a revisionary strategy towards Kant's theoretical philosophy, a higher order disposition to accept only reasons that can be put to others without the prospect of reasonable rejection is argued t

This article presents a theoretical framework of how people explain behavior. The framework, based on the folk concept of intentionality, distinguishes two major modes of explanation—reason explanation and cause explanation—as well as two minor modes and identifies conditions under which they occur. Three studies provide empirical support for these distinctions. As part of the framework, a detailed model of people's reason explanations is developed, which emphasizes the unique conceptual and linguistic features of reasons. This model points to limitations of traditional attribution concepts, w

For example, we are required not to hold inconsistent beliefs or intentions and we are required to intend any means we see as crucial to our ends. The article presents the results of the theoretical analysis of the main aspects of sports training in cyclic sports. To effectively solve the problem of training in cyclical sports, it is necessary to study the laws of the reaction of the body of athletes, including the processes of fatigue and recovery in response to the physical exertion of various directions. It is very important to individualize the training process, taking into account the functional state and reserve adaptive capabilities of the body. The authors identify such reasons that influence the development of cyclical sports as

Abstract:
Business failure is a natural part of the development lifecycle. In a healthy economy, the formations and dissolutions of small firms drive innovation through the process of creative destruction. However, an excessive level of involuntary closures lowers both economic mobility and community social capital. We partnered with the North Carolina Secretary of State’s Office (NCSOS) to identify factors that might be driving involuntary firm closures using administrative data. This analysis outlines our recommendation to use an exploratory open-ended survey instrument which targets dissolved firm ow

This module’s goal is to introduce and evaluate a variety of common strategies for harvesting wild populations. The module includes reasons for harvesting, theoretical foundations for maximum sustainable yield and harvest strategies, age- and sex-biased harvests, and effects of harvesting on target and non-target wildlife. The module contains two case studies and a spreadsheet-based exercise suitable for either demonstration or laboratory use. The module also contains references to supplementary material that is freely available on the web.

The aim of the article. One of the most interesting and topical problems in the USSR military industry development is the establishment and development of the USSR ammunition industry. The article is devoted to the study of one of the reasons for the poor supply of the Red Army by ammunition in the initial period of the war of 1941 - a lack of sleeves, which limited the production of artillery shells. The author sets the purpose of revealing the reasons for the unsatisfactory state of affairs in the field of manufacture by the industrial enterprises of the USSR industrial enterprises before th

In this paper we study the possibility of construction indicators-precursors relying on one of the most power-law tailed distributions – Levy’s stable distribution. Here, we apply Levy’s parameters for 29 stock indices for the period from 1 March 2000 to 28 March 2019 daily values and show their effectiveness as indicators of crisis states on the example of Dow Jones Industrial Average index for the period from 2 January 1920 to 2019. In spite of popularity of the Gaussian distribution in financial modeling, we demonstrated that Levy’s stable distribution is more suitable due to its theoretica

Governments can issue public debt for both good and bad reasons. The former include intertemporal tax smoothing, fiscal stimulus, and asset management. In contrast, the bad reasons, which generate higher indebtedness, are mainly associated with political cycles, rent capture, intergenerational transfers, and common pool problems. Fiscal rules aim to eliminate the problem of time inconsistency of public finances and minimize debt accumulation by setting debt limits. Despite the theoretical relevance of fiscal rules and institutions to the proper management of fiscal processes in different count

The feasibility of laying offshore pipelines in deep waters, to 3000 feet and beyond, has been established by theoretical studies by a number of different individuals and organizations over the past several years. These various theoretical studies are now being tested and refined as pipelines and production facilities are being installed in ever-deeper waters. A pipeline failure in these great depths would be intolerable, among other reasons because of the great difficulty and exorbitant expense of performing a deepwater repair.
