Abstract Linguistic communication has moved beyond simple alphabetic encoding to multimedia design, challenging the fit of structural theories of language to digital communication. This transition is barely evident in mobile language learning contexts where top-selling apps present language as a linguistic structure to be drilled, ironically bypassing the complex communicative potential of smart devices. This chapter overviews changing language norms from language as structure to language within multimodality and comparatively discusses multimodality from a social semiotics paradigm nested in linguistic theory and from Elleström’s intermediality paradigm. To illustrate how one could conceptualize multimodality from a perspective decentred from linguistics and leveraged to explain language use in multimedia contexts, the author examines two novel features of digital communication: emoji and conversational digital agents.

The Conclusion charts the survival of the rebel baron tradition into the early modern period, before looking at thinkers from the three spheres of influence that shape this book—Machiavelli, Bodin, and Hobbes—who develop powerful doctrines of sovereignty that seek to put an end to the cultures of rebellion and feuding that this book describes. I contend that our thinking about power, legitimacy, and authority has been shaped by such thinkers, who are canonical for modern political theory and ideas of sovereignty, leading us to side automatically with kings and sovereigns, and to mistakenly associate revolts and vendetta with anarchy.

Abstract:
For much of his professional career, Barry was not a contract theorist, and he relies on a number of elements from Scanlon’s construction. His general approach is built on a distinction he sees in theories of justice between those that rely on the idea that justice is agreement to mutual advantage and those that rely on the idea that justice is a matter of impartiality. His own theory is impartialist, but dispenses with the device of the veil of ignorance. Instead the contracting parties are assumed to reason with one another about the constitutional terms of their association, and all are allowed to veto proposals if those proposals and unreasonable. Unreasonable proposals are those that fail the test of avoiding absolute deprivation, relative deprivation, or failing to make provision for public goods. His anticipated theory of economic justice never materialized, and his derivation of a Rawlsian difference principle is only partially successful. However, it is possible to use the practical syllogism in a Barry set-up to derive a case for social insurance. More importantly, his principle contribution to social contract theory is his sketch of the empirical method, a method on which the future of social contract theory can be built.

Abstract:
The issue of the organization of control and feedback can be subdivided into several subjects: i) Selection of performance objectives; ii) The control algorithms; iii) Selection of measured and manipulated variables; and iv) Feedback organization. In previous publication [1] partial survey of the issues above and a terminology for feedback and control organization has been presented, that is, not all issues and not all relevant disciplines have been covered. Namely, motion control and servo-regulator applications have been covered; however, aircraft control, missile autopilots and process cont

Metal nanoparticle has been a promising option for fillers in thermal interface materials due to its low cost and ease of fabrication. However, nanoparticle aggregation effect is not well understood because of its complexity. Theoretical models, like effective medium approximation model, barely cover aggregation effect. In this work, we have fabricated nickel-epoxy nanocomposites and observed higher thermal conductivity than effective medium theory predicts. Smaller particles are also found to show higher thermal conductivity, contrary to classical models indicate. A two-level EMA model is dev

Modular topological structures, commonly known as Assur groups, have been an important subject of research in machine theory over the past several decades. In this paper, some unique engineering properties which appear in this type of structures and only in them are exposed. The concept of Assur groups is reformulated in terms of graphs and named Assur Graphs (AGs). The graph representation enables to present the inter-connectivity between all the elements of the AG, which is the fundamental characteristic from which all its unique properties derive. This inter-connectivity leads to unique pro

More than half of U.S. students entering college are female, but female students are still largely absent from engineering fields. The persistent absence of females in engineering may owe itself, at least in part, to a fundamental difference in cognitive approaches between males and females. Although there is a significant amount of cross-over, males are more likely than females to have a systemizing brain, which is associated with a drive to understand how the world works through the identification and creation of patterns and rules. Females are more likely to be born with an empathizing styl
