Full textSince the 1950's, the distinction between "local" and "global" has been used constantly when expounding various fields of mathematics. However, the first writings to make use of the opposition of local and global notions in a systematic way already appeared in the first years of the 20th century and expounded mathematical theories which had emerged as long ago as the 1850's. In the first part of this text, we present Riemann's work in global complex Analysis and in differential geometry, discuss its reading by Neumann and Klein, and study some of Poincaré's works. Besides specific mathematical results, we focus on the descriptive framework employed by these authors and their pre-set-theoretic manner of referring to loci. In the second part, we identify and explore two distinct frameworks, the "world of quantity" and the "world of sets" ; it allows us to characterise different periods in the evolution of Analysis in the 19th century, and to describe the conditions for the explicit emergence of the distinction between local and global notions. The third part is devoted to this explicit emergence, between 1898 and 1913, in the works of W. F. Osgood, Hadamard and Weyl. We distinguish between three levels on which the distinction emerged : the meta-Ievel, thematic level and structural level. The fourth part deals with the rise of global problems in differential geometry and in the theory of Lie groups, through a study of the deeply interconnected work of Weyl and Elie Cartan in the 1920's Lastly we study the emergence and elaboration of structures designed to express and address specifically global problems : differentiable manifolds, fibre spaces and sheaves

Full textWith the advent of general relativity, the profound interaction between the geometry of spacetime and gravitational phenomena became a truism of modern physics. However, the intimate relationship between spacetime geometry and gravitation is by no means restricted to relativistic physics but can in fact be successfully applied to nonrelativistic physics, the paradigmatic example being E. Cartan geometrisation of Newtonian gravity. This geometrisation of nonrelativistic gravitation involves some nonrelativistic structures whose discrepancies in comparison with their relativistic peers are better understood when embedded inside specific classes of relativistic gravitational waves. The ambition of this Doctoral Thesis is twofold: In a first part, we discuss a generalisation of the class of gravitational waves allowing the embedding of nonrelativistic features, explore their geometric properties and the new nonrelativistic structures emerging from this study. In a second part, we advocate how the group-theoretically oriented approach of Cartan to differential geometry can shed new light on nonrelativistic structures, both in an intrinsic and ambient fashion

Full textThe work of this thesis concerns a kinematic modeling of special multi-flags distributions and the classification of their singularities. These distributions are obtained locally by successive generalized Cartan prolongations starting from fibre tangent to a K+1-dimensional space. They constitute a generalization of Goursat distributions. Goursat distributions possess a complete classification describing all their types of singularities which also admit a geometrical interpretation. These distributions admit kind of universal kinematic model, the car with n trailers. This model contains all the possible classes of germs, and the stratification of its singular locus describes all geometric classes of singularities. The purpose of this thesis is to show that the problem of modeling car with n trailers can be generalized to the problem of modeling kinematic problem for an articulated arm, such that to this model is naturally associated a special K-flag distribution. We build a first type of singularities which is characterized in terms of kinematic properties. Then we refine some singularities into geometric classes which can be considered as a generalization of F. Jean's results. In fact these singularities correspond to those defined by P. Mormul for special multi-flags distributions

Full textThis study proposes an innovation application of two concepts studied by the mathematical community, the k-frame bundle and the Cartan connection. On the one hand, the use os a special Cartan connection on the 2-frame bundle allows us to propose a generalization of the concept of Schwarzian derivative in arbitrary dimension for projective and conformal diffeomorphisms. On the other hand, we were albe to develop a BRS structure which reproduce infinitesimally the action of diffeomorphisms on gauge fields plus a curvature term. Hence, the notion of Cartan connection on the frame bundle of second order resolves a problem open since twenty years by A. M. Polyakov who obtains the action of diffeomorphisms (space-time summetry) from a gauge transformation (internal symmetry). The result was published and opens a new field of recherch. The space-times and internal symmetries can then be formalised thanks to the same formalism

Celle-ci se traduit par une masse de neutron effective "mésoscopique", qui, contrairement à la masse effective "microscopique", est très grande devant la masse "nue", dans les couches intermédiaires.
