Full textTheatre architecture in France fromFrench Revolution to Second Empiretheory, innovation, legislation, constructionAt the dawn of the Revolution, a vague of theatrical constructions embraces France. The impulse which had been given under Louis XV to theatres bear now fruit. Furthermore, despite the opposition of the Church, the French society expresses a real enthusiasm for spectacles that one will later call “theatremania”. During the whole nineteenth century, theatres occupy a privileged position in the cultural and social life in France. The theatrical buildings contribute to crystallize the ambitions of the attended public. By consequence, theatres are an object of thinking, weather it is on the level of architectural theory, or on the level of innovation. Representing a typology of public buildings which host a very numerous and a very diversified public, the theatre becomes a privileged space of experimentation, in terms of public health as well as in terms of techniques. The noise pollution which accompanies its integration within the city, and the numerous fires that destroy a lot of theatres across Europe, lead the public administration to regulate more and more the functioning of theatres, to a point that these new regulations have an enormous impact on the architectural development of theatres. In this context, the theatrical architecture of the first half of nineteenth century takes several aspects which this work explores in order to illuminate the rise of the so-called theatre « à la française », of which Garnier’s Opéra de Paris will become the most prominent example

Full textThe study examines the relationships between theory of architecture and reflections on art at the end of the classic age. Through the analysis of the discourse on architecture, by considering the architect as an author, the research treats the question of expressiveness of the architectural object. It focuses on the aesthetic of architects, as a theory of sensation of beauty. Two words are studied in their discourse: character and type. Two concepts that summarize two theories of art antagonists, because they refer to two different visions of the world: that of Blondel, Boullée and Ledoux, which is closer to nature, and that of Quatremère de Quincy, which is already go into history. The survey stops on his determining role in the artistic landscape of 19th century in France, and its application to introduce a theory of idealistic art borrowed from German and Scottish art critic. By forging the concept of type, Quatremère de Quincy contributed to revaluate durably the values of architects, until the 20th century, by imposing a universalist and abstract design against an empirical understanding of reality, a representation of the imagination against a reflection based on discursive understanding, an ideal imitation against the classic art principle of imitation of nature. The concept of ideal type was forged on contact with the writings of philosophers, naturalists and philologists, who always had a strong influence on the artistic theories. Also, the study proposes to include the discourse of the architect in a more general epistemological field to confront his voice to those of these scientists and thinkers. Through the comparative analysis of the concepts of imitation, judgment of taste and style, central themes of theories on architecture, the study questions the place of history in the design process, as well as the role of memory and habit at the time of reception of the work by the public
Voda, Irina Ioana. "La fluidité architecturale : histoire et actualité du concept." Thesis, Université Grenoble Alpes (ComUE), 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015GREAH018/document.
Full text"Architectural fluidity" is an oxymoron, chosen deliberately in order to emphasize the fluidity expressions related to the intrinsic characteristics of architecture: compared to other arts (literature, visual arts, dance, theater, cinema, photography etc.), architecture is not only thought, interpreted or illustrated, but also is built, inhabited and solid. Considering architectural fluidity as a metaphor and the idea of fluidity as an abstract architectural concept, this term is associated by analogy to fluid mechanics to processes with accurate explanations found in physics. Assuming that the association of the two terms "fluid-solid" can be confusing, the first part of this thesis concerns with the definition of "fluidity" and the identification of its origins in the history of architecture. The second part focuses on the "fluidic" analysis through twenty contemporary projects. This analysis, which is based on the architectural dissertation of designers, determines the degree of fluidity in contemporary architectural production and establishes new connections between different projects. This thesis focuses on both theoretical concepts (by analogy to fluid mechanics) and developing a method to represent the conceptual process of the project (the fluidic analysis)

Full textNowadays, the architecture of the mobile network is in full evolution to ensure the increase in terms of bit rate between the Central (CO) (core networks) and various terminals such as mobiles, computers, tablets in order to satisfy the users. To address these challenges of the future, the C-RAN (Cloud or Centralized-RAN) network is known as a 5G solution. In the C-RAN context, all BBUs (Base Band Units) are centralized in the CO, only the RRH (Remote Radio Head) remain at the head of the base station (BS). A new segment between BBUs and RRHs appears called "fronthaul". It is based on D-ROF (digital radio-overfiber) transmissions and carries the digital radio signal at a high bit rate using the Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) protocol. Taking into account CAPEX and OPEX, the ANR LAMPION project has proposed the Self-seeded Reflective Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (RSOA) technology in order to make the solution more flexible and overcome the need for colored transmitters / receivers in the context of PON-WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Network). Nevertheless, it is necessary to add a FEC (forward error corrector) in the transmission to ensure the quality of service. So the objective of this thesis is to find the most suitable FEC to apply in the C-RAN context. Our work has focused on the use of LDPC codes, chosen after performance comparisons with other types of codes. We have specified the parameters (code performance, matrix size, cycle, etc.) required for LDPC codes to obtain the best performance. Hard-decision LDPC algorithms were chosen after considering the tradeoff between circuit complexities and performance. Among these hard-decision algorithms, the GDBF (gradient descent bit-flipping) was the best solution. Taking into account a CAN 2-Bit in the channel led us to propose a variant: the BWGDBF (Balanced weighted GDBF). Optimizations have also been made with respect to the convergence of the algorithm and latency. Finally, we managed to implement our own algorithm on the Spartan FPGA 6 xc6slx16. Several methods have been proposed to achieve a latency of 5 μs desired in the C-RAN context. This thesis was supported by the project ANR LAMPION (Lambada-based Access and Metropolitan Passive Optical Networks)

Full textThis PHd thesis is focused on the architect’s formation at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts during the Twentyth century. It is focused on the history of both regulations and pedagogy. Archives of the Ecole de Beaux-Arts and texts of regulations show reformes and period of stability along the century. The teaching of Architectural Theory, expecially the articulation between courses and contests, shows some pedagogical practices. By using a double perspective, continuities and evolutions have been highlighted. Moreover the abilities of the institution to let its academic traditions evolve has been explored. From Paris to provincial schools, from academical contest to professional one, from courses to contests, an innovative way of understanding teaching at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts during the Twentyth century is proposed

Full textWhat if architecture could be lived as an oriented element of intercession between human and his environment ? This idea was supported by a coherent architectural movement, organic architecture, forming an alternative building tradition through the entire 20th century and noticeable throughout the world. Considering that an appropriate architectural practice promote a peaceful relationship between man and his built environment and a reconnection between man and his natural environment, organicism can truly be considered as an environmental architecture. However, in spite of what we thought originally, this architectural tradition is not easy to define by its formal aspect. Rather, it is necessary to go through architectural theory to see the emergence of a common vision to a group of theorists and architects. This way of practising or considering architecture can appears in the ideas of Kenneth Frampton or Christian Norberg-Schulz, in the opinion on the key question of function in architecture, or through the theory of pure visibility and its corollary, physical knowledge. Bruno Zevi, among others, also contributes to the theoretical edifice but it is Frank L. Wright who is the great builder of organic architecture both literally and figuratively. However, he is not the only proponent of this type of architecture and the careers of other major architects such as Eladio Dieste, Hassan Fathy, Antoni Gaudí, the Griffin’s, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Alistair Samuel Knox, Rudolf Steiner or Gustav Stickley, especially, can be analyzed with interest from the perspective of environmental architecture
