Full textThis dissertation proposes to study the question of literature in the work of Adorno. It shows the utopian function which the philosopher attributes to literature as it draws the horizon of a "language without soil", a line of flight from the dialectic of reason. While philosophical discourse reproduces in its conceptual apparatus the mythical-rational violence against the non-identical singular, the language of literature seems able to indicate the possibility of reaching beyond the concept with the help of the concept, which is the utopian desire of negative dialectics. The challenge is not only epistemic: it is ethical-political as well, related to the possibility of establishing relations with others which are freed from the constraints of identity.In the literary works which he studies – those of Eichendorff, Hölderlin, Proust, Valery, Beckett or Kafka –, Adorno does however not seek a concrete figure of utopia, but rather traces of "what is our own and has been left blank" - both in these texts and in History. In those blanks, literature contains the « possible impossible » which haunts the present ; it is the picture without picture of Reconciliation (Versöhnung), a resource for both a radical critique of existence and for the desire of the other to come

Full textThis study puts to the test facts the theoretical declarations of Dada and surrealism about music, proposing to read them again in their historical and cultural context. It is about to know in what music has a role to play into surrealism, taking into account the texts that announce a refusal, and to measure the difference between the announced theory and the achievements concluded. Taking as starting point the spectacles and the musical theories of the avant-garde of the time of Dada, which carry in germ what will be surrealism, it examines then the whole of the declarations of Andre Breton on the music. It finally questions the idea that there was no musical surrealism. Far from the postromantism, well off the return to the classicism of France at the beginning of the twentieth century, new musics are worked out. Certain news musical tendencies will be able to hold the attention of the surrealist poets and to constitute an inspiration. Others will be impelled by composers having dependent part with the surrealist movement

Full textThis work deals with the slow emergence of textual analysis known as "commentaire de texte" in the French school system, together with its official recognition as part of the baccalaureat exam. First considered as the mere explanation of e text (known as "explication de texte"), the "commentary" became progressively defined as a deeper reflection on texts where the intelligence and sensibility of the reader combine with his ability to analyse. . Its practice is marked by its history ; many possible approaches are found : the observation of various procedures, based upon a corpus of "commentaries" about one and the same text, enables one to have a diachronic view of phenomena and to analyse their historical, or even philosophical implications. Today, "commentary" work is an interlinking field of study in the French school system ; it appears in four different subjects, which necessitates a good cohesion as to its teaching according to common cognitive abilities. It is favoured by students and teachers alike, even though they would like modalities of its realization to be somewhat less strict. A reflection on the mistakes made and a diversification of the ways of teaching it contribute to a better definition of this exercise which is characteristic of our teaching

Full textOur thesis aims at exploring, through the cyborg metaphor, the part of the contemporary literature which produces texts that are the fruit of a hybridization between books and hypermedia. The cyborg enables us to draw a parallel between the connections that exist today between books and hypermedia, and the relationships - made up of fears and fantasies - that people have with the technologies they create. Cyborg literature does not propose works within which books and hypermedia are opposed, but works born from the reunion of two material supports, thus offering a media hybridization of the literary text. New media have to be appreciated as a motor of evolution rather than as a threat. Indeed, contemporary literary and books have to take up the challenge imposed by new media. The book is at the core of our problematic. We have to consider it as a medium for text, a medium that is not neutral and that holds its own characteristics and potential. New media offer an opportunity to reevaluate the book in its material dimension which is no longer the only medium for text: our daily reading practices, between books and screens, prove it

Full textThis study proposes to confront the cartography with the literature in order to release a literature known as cartographic; I. E. A literature which does not merge with a géographical literature, but which is adapted, at the time of each stage of its speech, spécific codes and ambition of cartographic project which seeks to defy the world in its totality. This attemp at reconciliation, under consideration around a central corpus composed of Borges, Calvino, Perec, Stevenson and using regularly of parallels pictorial, determines in a first part the nature of the cartographic glance (point of view). This glance is carried out around an abandonment of the eye sensitive to profit of an the same time divine and theoretical bicephalous eye. A glance which involves this cartographic literature well off a logic representation for a logic of construction of which the foncations, approached in one second part, let foresee the way in which this literature uses to the statute of card image, between remote setting, framing, brevity and devices of projection. To these foundations succeeds the observation of the strategies installed by this writing, on the cartographic model, in order to achieve, in an effective way its challenge with totality, between disembodied structure, formal global nature related to the question of the genre and cumulative fullness. All of these strategies which are at the same time paradoxical and heterogeneous, come across the difficulties in this challenge. Also, in a last part we question the way in which the cartographic writing consecrates a quite specific reading, between reticularity and rhizomic verticality exempted by intertextuels devices end bilocation. This cartographic reading appealing to exteriority and diversity, for a totality-world open and with which the reader superimposes himself to become himself an individual-world

Full textThis study questions and tests the universality of the fantastic. It consists in submiting the fantastic to a literary context which is unfamiliar to it as for exemple the arabic literatures. The arab critics borrow the occidental terms and don’t claim the existence of a fantastic genre. In support of an occidental critical and literary corpus, we notice that the fantastic has two essential functions : it reveals the thought and renews it. The fantastic short stories written by Aymé, Buzzati and Pellerin, show a problematic articulation between the singular and the common which breaks the mechanics of a binary thought and reveal that it is possible to resolve the paradoxes of this thought by the exposition of an indetermined and problematic outside. We propose to mime this dynamic of the fantastic in comparing this corpus with an arabic outside. The discourses of contemporary arabic criticism and the short stories of Tâmir, Nasr and Tûbyâ introduce a possible thought about the limits of some of the determinations associated with the occidental fantastic. They also introduce the possibility of a fantastic thought able to reveal a new articulation between the singular and the common and between different contexts themselves

Their theoretical reflection, which analyses questions pertaining to language, history and identity, nourishes their novelistic production. In fact their novels mark the crossroads of theory and fiction. The latter are a forum for thought where the theoretical bases of their reflection are applied to reality. This perception of the novel as strictly related to their essay work leads us to consider the use of metafiction, a technique that encompasses both types of creation. The search for different metafiction strategies will allow us to analyze the construction of “guiding fictions”. At the same time, it will lead us to consider the role of a writer in the process of constructing a “national conscience” through literature

Full textImbedded in a contrasted history, the teaching of drama as a text remains torned apart in an unresolved fashion between its stage existence and its literary status. It is clear that a reflective overview is missing that would articulate the theoretical and practical views of those fields. This dissertation is devoted to this very task beginning with the following question: in what way can the didactics of the drama script be differentiated from the didactics of the literary text? Following a didactic model aimed at converging them, the analysis of textbooks unearths some representations that artifically oppose them. At stake is the status of the didascalic text. The in-depth analysis of a body of works, mainly contemporary and from the children's literature repertoire, allows to circumscribe and conceptualize the notion of "didascalic voice" in the path of Genette: the didactic sequences which are built with these tools confirm the interest of such a notion and its classification

Full textDuring the second half of the XXth century, literary theories often developed according to a scientist pattern by means of methodological borrowings coming from social or applied sciences. But whereas the scientific status of these very theories is considered to be unstable by epistemological criteria, the inner nature of methodological borrowings looks very much alike to that of metaphors and fiction. If, on one hand, the part played by analogies and fictional models in the discourse of the exact sciences is strictly determined, on the other hand, it appears to be utterly vague and indistinct as far as the social sciences are concerned, which represents one of the direct sources of failure for the structuralist approach as well as for French “nouvelle critique”. Borrowings coming from saussurian linguistics, psychoanalysis and sociology, as well as models and formalisms copied on mathematics, represent by all means a bibliography that can also be read and interpreted in accordance with stylistic and aesthetic codes. By its tendency to progressively blur the boundaries between literature and sciences, structuralism also contributes to create a favourable environment for the advent of post-modern episteme

Full textThe aporia of the "nouvelle critique" is due to the fact that in limiting itself to hermeneutical methodology hardly a new trend -- the literary criticism today is essentially devoted to contingency of texts to the exclusion of their creative and aesthetic necessity. It is only when one leaves the domain of the strict ars interpretandi and subordonates it teleologically to the ars inveniendi of an heuristics, that literary criticism could recreate the texts. We call heuristics this asystematical and creative induction which in poetry as well as in the sciences does not dissociate the critical from the creative act. Autonymy is the scheme of literary heuristics in that it abolishes the dualism between speech (poem) and metalanguage (dictionary) and therefore between criticism (metadicourse) and creation (poetical discourse). Applied heuristic, when functioning as "crucial experiment", does not follow the scientific models of choosing between two hypothesis. Rather applied heuristics converts a traditional literary hermeneutical criticism into a heuristic one. Literary heuristics is an alternative to creative writing. It rejects neither historicity, nor theory, and method, but the concept of disciplines. The development of literary heuristics constitutes the anthropological foundation of general heuristics. Previous attempts to go beyond systems have been carried out with the purpose of criticizing reason, whereas general heuristics is presented here as a rational alternative to systems and disciplines

Full textStarobinski's criticism has denominations of thematic, existential and subjective criticism at the same time. These multiple denominations about his criticism explain his own particularity. Taking part in the movement of relativism that was reinforced by the refuse of absolute value after the cruel Second World War and permitted human consciousness to approach to human phenomena through diverse perspectives. Starobinski preferred not to imprison in one method, and applied each analysis method to each work to study. This is the reason why Starobinski's criticism doesn't have one form. This thesis aims to illustrate Starobinski's own critical world in three points of view. First, this thesis examines general theories of literary criticisms and thematic criticism, second, general theories of Starobinski's criticism, and third, his concrete analyses by the criticism. The introduction describes the historical background of the birth of Starobinski's criticism, examining literary criticisms of Sainte-Beuve, of Taine, of Lanson, of Bachelard, of Sartre, of Barthes, of Goldmann and of other thematic critics. The first chapter is to find out the epidemiological foundations that determine and define all of Starobinski's critical activities. This chapter includes Starobinski's own concept of 'relation' and the sense of reflexive liberty, and his thematic critical theory. The second and the third chapters comprise analyses of Starobinski's critical works that regard the discordance of internal life and external life, provoked by the human relations, as the origin of human evil and misery. To explain this discordance, the critic use these themes, such as 'regard', 'masque', 'transparence', 'obstacle' and 'melancholy'

Full textThis study raises the question of the finality of V. Woolf's writing. The introductory analysis of an experimental text which is half essay half fiction, and as such illustrates V. Woolf's perpetual oscillation between two genres involving two antithetical modes of writing, helps clarify the main points at issue. The first part focuses on the critical work. It brings to light the imaginary appeal and reassuring nature of its underlying literary theory, and explores at various levels the significance of V. Woolf's increasing lack of sympathy for her fellow-writers, and growing obsession with the continuity and specificity of the english tradition. Her critical stance, her compulsion to anchor herself as reader and essay-writer in the literature of the past and to resort regularly to a purely ideological mode of writing bear a definite relation to her parallel activity as a modernist writer. Hence the second part of this study, which is designed to bring out the essentially 'poetic' nature of V. Woolf's alternative mode of writing, through a close analysis of an exemplary text of fiction: the first part of To the Lighthouse. Finally, V. Woolf's nine major works of fiction are examined in chronological order, as so many stages in a necessarily endless quest for subjective unity

Full textThis study is an examination of the construction of the sexes in the literary works written up until 1905, and as presented in her theoretical treatise on the subject (notably “The Human as a Wife,” 1899), of Lou Andreas-Salomé. The objective of the study is to present and elucidate upon (literary) theory developed by the author before becoming a member of the circle of Vienna. Based on biological considerations, Salomé outlines a scenario in which the female is utterly superior and where sexuality is the driving force behind evolution. Indeed, as the prototype of evolution, the wife is its sole representative. By contrary, in the literary works, as in “Der heimliche Weg: Drei Scenen aus einem Ehedrama,” until now disregarded by the body of research, various psychosocial classifications obscure and foil female sexuality, in particular that of incestous relations. In addition to this distortion, sexuality is well-hidden behind a widespread notion of conventional gender roles. This presents the opportunity in the current work to elaborate upon a typology of the woman reflecting the socio-cultural trends at the close of the last? 19th Century. It is indisputable that the contents of Lou Andreas-Salomé's literary achievements are deeply engraved in modern classical literature and are therefore a significant part of its canon

Full textOur thesis examines various aspects of the translator's presence in literary translations from English into French. Our study starts with an overview of translation approaches and theories from antiquity to the present, with particular focus on the translator's presence. We then concentrate on literary translators’ relationships with the authors (and texts) they translate. Translators' accounts often reveal mixed feelings of love, hate, desire and/or pleasure, so many strong feelings that are inherent in the translation process. We go on to discuss three specific cases of translator/author relationships. A study of the various traces that translators leave in their translations (both visible and invisible) introduces our corpus-based study. In this part, the role of the translator as negotiator between languages and cultures is analysed through the translations of H. Fielding's Bridget Jones and J. Austen's six novels: the translators' choices, ranging from visibility to invisibility, are examined in depth. The analysis of Austen's translations is an opportunity to look into the problem of translations by multiple authors and their impact on the perceived unity of the works. A diachronic study of the translations of Pride and Prejudice shows that retranslation is the place par excellence where the translator's presence is most apparent. Our final chapter is devoted to the treatment of several features of V. Woolf's style in the two translations of The Waves by French writers M. Yourcenar and C. Wajsbrot. The translator's presence constitutes an integral part of literary translation, and determines the way foreign literature is received

Full textWe should not deal with formalism, but rather with formalists. However, in spite of their differences, the formalists have the same references and study the same subjects. They show that sound has a value independently from the meaning, they study discourse and what generates meaning the theoretical stake of this research is the making-up of "litterary science" which must have its own object and its own specific study. The formalists renew the notions of from and contents, and oppose them those of "device" and material. They investigate the composition and the "morphology" of works and genres, they elaborate the notions of system and structure. A particular conception of literary evolution results from their conception of formal analysis. The latter establishes "genetic" links between the phenomena. The formalists don't limit themselves to theory and history. They put forward the idea of the necessity of a "technology of discourse" in the fields of declamation, of the oratorical art, of translation and of "linguistic policy"

This thesis thus clarifies the process by which Blanchot leaves the politics and extends, by his own literary writing, his philosophical and anti-psychological reflections on the human being; but this trajectory is not linear at all, it is rather in a spiral between the esthetics and the politics

Full textPoetics, as Henri Meschonnic defines it, is the study of literary specificity. But it is also and above all a research of the functionings and the historicities. As a criticism of the rhythm, it allows the recognition of the value - often over shadowed by traditions rooted in the literary criticism - and shows the limits of the concepts that represent the language as discontinuous. It is in this theoretical context that this work on Samuel Beckett is situated. Through our poetical approach of the Trilogy, on the light of the preceding texts, we are making a criticism of Beckett's criticism. We show how this latter confines in a thematic ressassement that is either a formalism that ignores historicity or a subjectivistic aesthetic. These reductions to which the specificity is exposed are already pointed out by Beckett himself in his writings. First, there are his essays on Joyce, Proust and on painting that display this strong idea on the vulnerability of the works faced with the incompetence of the existing means to conceive art and literature. Then, it is the specificity of his writing proper that shows us that those who write are the first to supply us with the means to think it over

Full textThe following thesis on poetics, which is principally comprised of detailed, close analysis of specific poems, has a two-fold objective. First, from a methodological stand-point, the thesisdraws its epistemological frame from neo-jakobsonian poetics and aims to demonstrate how sustained attention to and interrogation of the double structuration inherent in the texts analysed substantially enriches and grounds the sorts of statements we can make about them in the course of interpretation. Second, it postulates the existence of a critical, socio-poetic dimension to Rimbaud’s opus in verse. First and foremost, there is a critique of verse form. Simply put, Rimbaud radicalizes the Hugolian project of deconstructing verse, and must be understood as one of the core agents in a poetic revolution. Furthermore, inextricably intertwined with this critique of French versewe find a social critique – a critique of the power relations, figures, discourses, and apparatuses of social and religious domination in French society leading up to and away from the Paris Commune, and which frequently prevails upon the poetic arms of parody and caricature. Finally, if the corpus examined here is principally a Rimbaldian one, it nevertheless invariably implies a relation to Verlaine. Thus, though the works analysed in this thesis are more or less emblematic of a specificmoment in the Rimbaldian oeuvre, and more or less illuminating for the comprehension and modalities of what we call Rimbaud’s “poetics of effarement” (a poetics explicitly outlined in the so-called “seer letters”), we will turn our attention, after close analytic accounts of texts such as Tête de faune, or Les effarés, to the figure of “Ophélie” in order to trace the possible presence of Rimbaud in Verlaine’s Romances sans paroles

Full textWe elaborate the notion of "critical writing" in blanchot's non fictional work. This notion is important, not only because these writings are critical, but also because criticism should be understood as central to writing as such. We have restricted our corpus to the non fictional writings. These writings think literary criticism as a "relation" fondamentaly defined by its impossibility. Analysing blanchot's practice of literary criticism, we find that this "relation" is paradoxically possible in a "critical writing". The critical dimension comes from the self questioning of blanchot's critical writings on criticism. But the autoreflexive gesture is not only a solipsist movement it is open to a specific temporality that we call the "time of criticism". This time signifies that writing is a process within which reading is defered and always put off in re-writing. The mean of that "defering time" is the other critics texts taken as a mediation to the text, and also, the "ressassement" through which blanchot, repeatingly, focuses on and displaces the same figures, problematics and privileged authors. This specific time of critical writing shows an evolution in blanchot's non fictional work aswell. When blanchot writes in fragments it is a moment which may be seen as a crisis and, at the same time, a renewal of the critical relation. What is at stake in that moment? the reconstitution, trough the ordeal of disaster, of the subject of writing which has been broken up. In that recovery of the subject, the self can only be thought in relation with the other. The relation with the other was inscribed from the beginning in the critical relation and its paradox should be understood according to blanchot's thinking of friendship an community : a relation that does not relate. This is the signification of the torment which inhabitates his critical writings. The impossibility of beeing in relation is sustained in the writing of/to the other writer

Full textOur aim was to study the issue of literary translation when it is carried into the B language of the translator (here from Korean to French) with the assistance of a co-translator native speaker of the target language and to point out the conditions of success. In the field of literary translation from Korean into French, this kind of team-work aims at overcoming the lack of French translators able to produce literary standard translations by themselves. When the translation is done by a Korean translator working into his B language, a thorough work of editing and rewriting is required due to the formal requirements of literary writing. An increasing number of Korean novels and short stories are translated by such a dual team and published in France.We analyze the different steps of the process of translation, from understanding to reformulation in the light of the Interpretive Theory of Translation, trying to show why the key concept of “de-verbalization” makes co-translation justifiable, translation being defined as an operation from text to text not from language to language.The first part of our research is devoted to the theoretical aspects of our study (definition of some key notions, mainly of the Interpretive Theory of Translation) and its practical aspects (general survey of translated Korean literary works into French). In the second part, we analyze a large number of our translation samples with the objective of showing the sort of dialog the translator and her co-translator entertain, and underlining the nature of guidance proposed by the first one to second one and the contribution of the last one.Our conclusion is that, thanks to this dual-team process, often wrongly considered as a lesser evil, we are able to produce quality literary translation provided that the method implemented takes into account the conditions we describe here

Full textVerlaine’s experience allows to question the phenomenon of writer criticism. The rationale and the formal qualities of the daily critical output of a poet acceding to celebrity are studied after an overview of the phenomenon’s definitions (introduction). The triple biographical, esthetic and discourse analysis reveals the tight bond between critical production context, theories used and form given to critical texts. Verlaine’s marginal position in the literary field predetermines his distrust of institutionalization mechanisms and oftheories justifying them resulting in low conceptualization as well as in contradictory and discouraging handling of existing notions. The particularities of self-representation (provocation, weak ethos) equally result from his position in the literary field and go along with abandoning prescriptive theories in the name of tolerance. The emphasis moves from the conceptual sphere to the discourse accentuating affectivity, expressivity and irony which bring it closer to poetical creativity but not so as to become prose poetry. This criticism does not loose its pragmatic turn inherent to literary communication, its efficiency being reinforcedby certain features of idiolect (play upon sounds, metaphors, segmentation of phrases), freed of their poetical value in the new context

Full textThis very study of the first and only treatise on literature in Classical Chinese history composed around 500 shows how its author Liu Xie conceived what is usually called genre, style, and author's writing. Chapter one lays the foundation. It deals with the discussion on the overall architecture of the book by looking back on the different editions that were transmitted. It offers an interpretation of the architecture by discussing the order of the chapters which has been challenged in the past century. Within this structure, four chapters are related to the issue of form. Chapter two focuses on the first pair of these chapters, i. E. "Tixing" (Body and Nature) and "Fenggu" (Wind and Bone). This body of texts is these texts. A reflection on catachresis and syllepsis brings us to demnostrate that a literary body can be booth normed and individual, that the bone is a structuring tension, and the wind is a rhythm that carries emotions. Chapter three links theory and practice. It links the genre described in the chapter "Songzan" (Praise and Celebration) with the celebrations composed by Liu Xie himself. The chapter is first translated and studied. Liu Xie's prescriptions are compared with the characteristics of the celebrations that close each of the chapter of the treatise. This research thus reflects upon the establishment of a normative discourse and on theoretical issues involving an individualized writing which is still a field mediation for specialists of literature

Full textAs an emotion « par excellence » anger particularly defies its setting into words and raises complex pragmatic questions between experienced, written and read angers. In order to determine its specificities we analyse and experiment various pragmatics models (rhetoric, esthetics, ethics) from which the literary theory tries to seize the emotion caused bu the reading, and we expose a method of analysis of the textual affects (semiotic of passions). The possible contributions of philosophical and psychological designs of the emotion, not making the language an essential mediation, are questioned. These various prospects of analysis are then applied to a diachronic study of anger and the imaginaries, forms and values of it we inhenrited. This investigation is seized again thanks to modelings of this passion field. Two singular writings of anger, apparently antithetical but asserting both openly this passion and its energy, are then studied. The texts of Micbaux, displaying a distant attitude, lead us to question how a good use of anger can be the base of poetic power. Féerie pour une autre fois, by L. F. Céline, between rhetorical strategy and aesthetic search of an « émotive » style, gives us to see how a furious crispation, while putting in failure a « classical » reading of the account, allows the deployment of the creative power of the affect. Full textFrom its inception, the category of neighboring rights is heterogeneous. It encompasses disparate objects relegated of the realm of copyright. If neighboring rights share the exclusive character, they differ in everything else. The right of the performer is a bifunctional intangible property (in French law) on the performance (to be understood as the creative form not as a simple work/labor); by contrast, economic neighboring rights have the nature of monopoly granted to certain investors in the field of cultural production. A series of confusions has caused the property of the performer to weaken. However, the notion of “neighboring rights”, which only describes a legal relationship with copyright, does not express the nature of these exclusive rights. Thus, our theory of the “neighborhood of exclusive rights” within literary and artistic property proposes another paradigm respecting the secular fundamental principles of personalist literary and artistic property in France, namely the distinction between creation and work and between property and monopoly. According to our proposition, there is an essential hierarchy between the properties of creators (authors and performers) and the monopolies of investors; on the other hand, between properties of creators, the relationship is egalitarian
