Giacomotto-Charra, Violaine. "L'imaginaire des éléments à la Renaissance : réception et réécritures des théories antiques." Bordeaux 3, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003BOR30059.
Full textRésumé : The theory of the four elements in the Renaissance is both well- and not so well-known, since there is not just one but several theories that make use of and interpret differently earth, water, air and fire: the four elements do not just lay the foundation of material imaginations but they also supply the intellectual tools used to make sense of the world. Their operation in cosmological literature, together with the thoughts they provoke in the philosophical field, is consequently far from insignificant. Their status is further complicated by the fact that they lie at the core of a living science and at the same time provide the subject of bookish culture. Therefore this study aims at exploring a particular imaginary domain, that of elemental matter, and at pondering over the relation between the transmission of knowledge and literary production. It is built along three lines. First, an investigation into ancient theories, as they were elaborated and then passed on to the West in the Middle Ages through a wide range of texts that gradually invested them with various values and meanings. Secondly a study of how those theories were received in the XVIth century, their modes of integration within the culture and intellectual set-up of the Renaissance, the interpretations, rewriting and resistance they gave rise to, as well as their insertion into the culture shared by the humanists and the curious alike. Finally, as an example of the basic articulation between learned and literary discourse, an analysis of the elemental motif in La Sepmaine by Du Bartas, that helps to understand how the cosmological imagination of a period and that of a poet have been constructed
Julliard, Catherine. "La réception des théories esthétiques françaises par le théâtre allemand de la Frühaufklarung." Paris 4, 1992. http://www.theses.fr/1992PA040127.
Full textThe period to be studied, a domain that has been until now little explored, extends over the first decades of the eighteenth century and is characterized by different ruptures with the previous century, particularly with the formal and conceptual heritage of the second Silesian school. The psychological situation of the epoch is defined by the German consciousness of deficiencies in the dramatic and cultural sphere, increased by the reactions of foreigners who mock German literature. The specific German situation is the origin of the reception of French dramatic theories. The reception, or the passage from one cultural sphere to another, meets German expectations, and the borrowings play a cardinal part in the elaboration of a new dramatic theoretical edifice. The model advocated by Gottsched, who is the focus of the study, is France, a successful example of a national culture, an ideal of dramatic theory which is based on norms. The method employed consists in a reading of texts in French and German theory with the consideration of major themes. The study shows that Gottsched is inspired by the French classical and neoclassical tradition. It attempts to reveal the coherence of the French contributions that the German writer integrates into the edification of his national program

Full textThis thesis is a reflection on the relationship between postcolonial theory and curatorial practices in contemporary art, with an emphasis on the permeabilities and dialogic relationship that has developed between them. It does not seek to explain postcolonial theory as applied to curatorial practices or to provide a so-Called user manual, but rather to visualize them. By “visualize” we do not mean to illustrate or present a transliteration of the theory, butinstead to note various developments and embodiments thereof. The United Kingdom and America during the 1980s and early 1990s are the subject of the first part of the thesis to the extent that they are both places of emergence of postcolonial theory and also key societies in the context of colonial history. The second part focuses on the second half of the 1990s and early 2000s, a time when postcolonial theory as a tool become inseparable from the analysis of globalization. Finally, the third part proposes to consider a post-Western world in the 21stcentury, post-Western in the sense that the dissolution of the concept of center/periphery requires certain shifts and epistemological adjustments for which contemporary art exhibitions are active vectors, particularly those seeking to articulate a postcolonial discourse

Full textSpanning the sociology of elites, intellectual history, and reception studies, this research explores how theories and political ideas are circulated across countries and disciplines, as well as between the academic and political worlds. Starting in 1971, it studies the French intellectual and political reception of John Rawls’s theory of social justice, and more broadly of the debates it sparked in the English-speaking world. Contributing to a historical sociology of political ideas, this dissertation combines ethnography in think-tanks and academic conferences, as well as in online discussions, with a statistical survey, and the study of archives of publishers, academics and administrations. Through the exploration of references to Rawls, Sen or Walzer in academia, the press, political platforms or curricula, we show how this reception is an analyzer of broader changes, such as the growing dominance of English in transnational cultural exchanges, the declining recourse to Marxist and Keynesian paradigms in the French Left, and the questioning of centrality of structuralism in social sciences and the humanities in France. It shows that the very diverse ways in which “theories of justice” have been appropriated and circulated in France depend on the social location of their mediators, and on how their networks are structured. Whereas the sociology of reception has often overlooked the internal analysis of appropriations, this research shows how analyzing them sociologically helps explain why these mediators felt elective affinities with Rawls’s thought, despite national, disciplinary and sectoral boundaries

We show how Life politics enrolls in the Gender device at work in the social and political fabric. This is to analyze the forms of media construction of Gender deployed by politicians themselves through their presentation strategies that lead to a reaffirmation of Gender identities via overinvestment of belonging markers and or differentiation, and the media whose tabloid magazines through the scopic drive and process activation/reactivation of Gender stereotypes. Full textAccording to a common view in music education, listening to music must be considered both a whole experience as total as a continuous one, equally. However, this perspective is in conflict with the possible reality that the listener can fall into a state of situational boredom. Thus far, both philosophically and methodologically, this concept of boredom has been disregarded in the experience of listening to music. Once boredom is included, a discrepancy between the expectations of the listener and the satisfaction of these expectations is revealed. It calls for a theoretical reevaluation of the foundations of musicology, which have put the origin of music in the work of art (the score or a specific interpretation). This PHD project attempts to define a theoretical framework for the following question: what is situational boredom in the experience of listening to music? By questioning important and current notions such as interest, embodiment, awareness, familiarity, treatment, and conscience, this new field approach becomes a criticism of the idealization of esthetic reception. During a reception time, boredom brings to light the question of the subject’s integration into the analysis. Until when can the subject be ignored? This study, while not responding definitively, prepares the ground for a new and interesting problematic theoretical field and offers its first modelization

Full textDespite the development of terrestrial links, satellite communication is remaining an interesting mean of information transmission. Broadcasting, pay-TV operators, video, data and broadband Internet services are provided by satellites in a trustworthy way. An important component for the satellite communication, other than the satellite itself, is the receiving antennas deployed all over the world with a huge number. The most popular one is the parabola but this structure does not meet any longer the new aesthetics and the additional functional requirements. For this purpose, motivated researchers worldwide are working on presenting new discreet and self-steering receivers. Indeed, new structures that allow automatic beam steering are beginning to merge into the market but with relatively high prices. We aim with the present work to design a flat antenna array with electronically beam scanning at an affordable price. Therefore, an alternative broadband receiving antenna is designed and implemented for TV channels reception in Ku-band. It consists of an antenna array of 256 radiating elements. The radiating element of an original shape is designed using a methodological approach based on printed antenna theory and simulations. A bandwidth of over 2 GHz (10. 7 – 12. 7 GHz) is obtained from this printed element with a footprint of less than the wavelength. With a suitable array configuration, a directivity of about 30 dBi is achieved, good enough for geostationary satellite signal reception

Full textThe study aims to draw the history of the reception of Roger de Piles’ (1635-1709) theory, in the German area during the 18th century. Rapidly considered as a benchmark of artistic literature, De Piles’ writings are received differently according to political and cultural contexts, to dissemination system and to players of their reception. The translation of art theories coming from abroad happens to be, throughout the whole 18th century, a crucial factor in the construction of German theories of painting. Between 1699 and 1776, four books of, or attributed to, the French author are published in German, first in Berlin and Hamburg, then in Leipzig, by the painter Samuel Theodor Gericke (1665-1729) and by the connoisseurs Paul Jacob Marperger (1656-1730) and Georg Heinrich Martini (1722-1794). Some are republished several times or retranslated outside the borders of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation by Johann Dauw (1679-1723) and Tobias Querfurt (working from 1732 to 1792). The German reception of Roger de Piles’ theory of colouring occurs mainly in association with others authors (Sandrart, Félibien, Lairesse, Testelin). The assimilation process of the vocabulary established by De Piles illustrates the general evolution of the German reception of his theory. The impregnation of de Piles’ concepts fluctuates between fidelity, embezzlement and acculturation, in a period marked by a search of correlation between theory, practice and taste for painting. Eventually, the colourist position tinged with eclecticism sketched by de Piles prospers in the theoretical and practical syncretism of his German reception
Yuan, Yuan. "Réception et création : les littératures féminines française et chinoise au XXe siècle." Besançon, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010BESA1015.
Full textThis study aims at probing, measuring and describing the relationship between the Chinese and French female literature of the twentieth century. It concentrates particularly on the most representative female writers from both countries and their works that reflect female consciousness. The Chinese female writing in the 1920s-1940s shows strong feminist thought, similar to French female writing of the period. However, there was no direct communication between these two female literatures and the influence of French literature on the first generation of contemporary Chinese female writers came from males writers. The French feminist literary theory formed during the 1970s has become the theoretical pivot and practical model for the Chinese female writing in the 1990s, yet continually influenced by Chinese female writing in the 1920s-1940s. The use of the comparative method helps to show that Chinese contemporary female literature is “the fruit” of the combination of the development of Chinese female literature herself, the influences of western feminist theories and western literature, especially French literature

Full textFrancisco Salinas' treatise on rhythm, the second part of his De Musica Libri Septem of 1577, is indicative of trends common to the entire European humanist movement of the sixteenth century. By restoring an "antique" model of musical rhythm, Salinas claims to solve the contradictions of the current mensural system, in the economy of arrangements of sound durations organized by a proportional beat, and follows a simplification imperative which also concerns the other sciences of the number. This epistemological reframing enterprise doubles as an aesthetic valuation of the simplicity of the "meter", by virtue of its power over the spirits, and in the name of extra-musical objectives shared by all reformist currents. The treatise also serves pedagogical and missionary ambitions, and is part of "meter policies" aimed at mastering tools of contrafacture, as at the creation of "new canticles". The know-how he promotes, and which culminates in the art of making musical verses and building up elaborate strophic forms, reveals his kinship with the research of French cultural elites at the same time, which formed a particularly favorable horizon for these theories. The impact that Salinas' text has had on the evolutions of the rhythmic conceptions between the Renaissance and the Baroque age affects both the typologies and notations of new musical languages, as well as the various expressions of a "crisis of rhythmic consciousness" appearing in French theoretical sources from 1581 to 1640

Full textTo encourage actions in favour of renewable energies, in 2011, the Algerian government launched "program to develop renewable energies and promote energy efficiency”, which described it as ambitious. To decode the stakes of this energetic public policy, especially in terms of polity, we have mobilized the “public governance” approach as well as “stakeholdertheory”. The reception of this “policy” in terms of projects is reflected in two dimensions. The first dimension led us to construct a typology of the projects deployed. The second dimension allowed us to construct a typology of the influence strategies implemented when this public policy was appropriated in large and small projects. They would have to be characterized with the assumption that they would be of a very different nature between the two types of projects observed. We found that large companies, at the local level, use rather similarly limited strategies. On the other hand, small local companies combine several influencing strategies that demonstrate a form of strategic creativity

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to characterize the theoretical capacity of the HF ionospheric channels and to improve the estimate in a receiver based on turbo-equalization. The capacity was treated by Lee and Ozarow for TDMA radio-communications using the hypothesis that each path attenuation is a Rayleigh random variable. This hypothesis is used without specifying any parameter. In a first part, this thesis presents an extension of Lee and Ozarow results for the non-stationary environments such as the ionospheric channel. A general theoretical capacity formula versus the Doppler spread is developed and it is an interesting contribution for the non-stationary channels. This one makes it possible to give a clear idea on the theoretical achievable bit rate of an ionospheric link affected by Doppler spread and inter symbol Interferences (ISI). The theoretical approach was finalized by an application to a real ionospheric communications link realized during the eclipse day (August 11, 1999). In a second part of this thesis, we studied and characterize the estimators likely to be used in the ionospheric turbo-equalizer based on linear filtering. Indeed, the estimators, such as Least Mean Squared (LMS), Recursive Least Squared (RLS) and Kalman filters (KF), were the subject of optimizations and comparisons in a real and simulated ionospheric environments. The optimization and comparisons, enabled us to choose the RLS and the Kalman estimators as being most performant (powerful) in the non stationary ionospheric channel. The last part of this thesis relates to the implementation of MMSE turbo-equalizer based on Soft Input Soft Output SISO principal and on RLS and Kalman estimators in the real and simulated ionospheric channel. The transmission is continie in time and the frame pattern is based on the STANAG 4285 HF modem specifications. The performances in bit error rate and the Mean Squared Error (MSE) were evaluated versus signal to noise ratio and Doppler spread. With respect to bit error rate and mean squared error, the estimations based on Kalman filter was more powerful than that using RLS algorithm

Full textThe cinema was apparently invented, not as a technical instrument, but as a show for an audience. Yet, unlike the theatre, it requires darkness. Each spectator is taken back to his innermost being. What will the part of collective psychological effects and that of intimacy be when viewing the film ? That is the question we must consider all along our dissertation. To give it an answer, we first go over the work done by Institut de Filmologie psychologists as well as by the seventies metapsychologists of the cinema. After revealing what these works have in common-a portrayal of the viewer regressing to a fusion state-we propose that the viewer be partly engaged in the fiction film in an imaginary way, but knowing it. Eventually, what we assume has already been said by Schiller, when he described the aesthetic mode of the pathetic. The spectator, even when mesmerised or tuned up by the film, knows he is distinct from it. In a second section, we distinguish between too flows of psychological effects. On the one hand, what we name effectuation, draws the landscape of Efficiency, when it rouses a part of our psyche receptive to identifications and triggers a cognitive and emotional dynamic. On the other hand, affectuation brings together Chance effects that appear as reliefs of effectuation processes (when a film impresses us inordinately) or in their interruption (when images pull us out of the diegesis). Finally, we attempt to answer this question : what will the aftereffects of these psychological processes be once the show is over ? We, then, distinguish two kinds of film memories : one generic (story memory) and one specific (composed of image memories)

Full textFunded by the French Aids Research Agency (ANRS), this doctoral thesis focuses on HIV/AIDS mass communication campaigns. The theoretical framework articulates concepts from communication sciences, social psychology, cognitive science and researches in persuasive communication. A qualitative survey made among AIDS prevention campaigners in France shows their social representations and implicit theories of AIDS communication. In particular, they believe in the effectiveness of targeted and interactive message. As their opinion does not derive from scientific literature, an experiment, conducted over two hundred people, examines the validity of campaigner's implicit theories in the context of committing communication applied to the Internet. The results show effects of interactive HIV/AIDS communication campaigns using “mini-acts” on attitude accessibility and behavior towards AIDS prevention. Full textThe “Frankfurt School” is one of the most important current of thought of the 20th century. The intellectual movement, led in particular by Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno, Herbert Marcuse and Walter Benjamin, is at the origin of a rich and fertile thought – Critical Theory –, which has had vast impacts. Within its sphere of influence, however, France occupies a singular place. The Frankfurt constellation seems to indeed have experienced a limited success. If the label has a certain notoriety, its substance appears, for its part, imprecise and nebulous for the French observers. This national exception regarding the “Frankfurt School” tends nevertheless to disappear for some years. Under the influence of a new generation, Critical Theory ideas reach a new resonance and are the source of fertile appropriations. The aim of this work is to understand the complexity of the relationship that the French intellectual context maintains with the “Frankfurt School”. More precisely, it seeks to reconstruct the nature and the content of the dialogue that the French intellectual public has established, and continues to establish today with this movement. Through this hermeneutic reconstitution, this study highlights obstacles but also bridges and centers of appropriation which contribute to this reception process. Finally, the trajectory of the Frankfurt “bottle into the sea”, to use the Adornian metaphor, offers the story of an original philosophical adventure and constitutes a unique gateway to the theoretical debates which animate national intellectual life

During the translation process, the translated text is already a. Function of its target public. It functions as a motivation to reading. The construction of textual models shows how the properties of each type of text, with differing degrees of representation of the original text. The ideal would be an optimal relation between the source and the target texts. The tanslated text is an oriented structure in that the translator takes into account constraints such as the target literary system and culture. The ideal situation would be a "synonymy in reading" in the source and target literary systems. By analysing the translation process, conclusions are drawn concerning the nature of translated text, the translator's role in the literary system and the function of the alterations to the original text

Full textThis study suggests analyzing the reception of the reading within varied cultural areas. My postulate is that the reception of the reading by an empirical, cooperative or abstract reader, is made at two levels: the one that define the theorists of the reception of the reading as Iser, Eco, Jauss or Picard, an individual level where the reader creates, completes the text and another level than I shall define in the thesis, where the reading is made according to a shared culture, to a common culture. Wolfang Iser, in L’Acte de lecture (1985), tries to discover what occurs in the authority reader at the time of her reading. For this theorist, the reader is also a creator of the text. He shows that the reader reacts to the requests registered in the text and which pre-direct his reception. For him, the text organizes and manages the reading. It leads the reader, guides him in his reading of the text. For Umberto Eco, in Lector in fabula (1989), the ideal reader answers standards planned by the author, he is the model reader who cooperates to complete the text, "tissue of white spaces, chinks to be filled". The reader so cooperates, by updating the text, this Model reader is capable of communicating with the author who slid for him indications in the text. Thanks to his encyclopaedic skill, the reader can build his reading. Hans-Robert Jauss, as for him, in his book Pour une esthétique de la réception, which combines texts written between 1972 and 1975, criticizes the literary history which still granted importance only for two authorities: the author and the text. Jauss claims the participation of the reader in the text. The reader thus takes up the text by updating it, by inserting it into a field referent defined by his personal, cultural, social references, his own lived. Michel Picard, theorist of the literary reading, in his book La lecture comme jeu (1986) is more particularly interested to the real, empirical reader, who reads with his body, the one that we shall meet mostly, during this study. The subject reader is in the heart of the researches for the theorists of the literary reading. He is the third authority of the set of three (author, text, reader). These theorists defined a first level of the reception, more personal, more individual, than a second level for which I try to bring to light and to theorize. This new aspect of the reception, which I shall define as communo-cultural, shows that the reader reacts to the cultural requests established in the text and brings his according to the history and the culture of his community, his people. Indeed, every word, every situation that reads the pupil reader, activates in him a cultural phenomenon of memory, stemming from the cultural heritage which he shares with his community, of his common, ancestral history, passed on by his family, his traditions, sound lived daily, his reality. The teaching according to me has to take into account this "hillside" of the pupil, this wealth and this second reading of the text to allow him to advance, to feel reassured sometimes and especially, to open in the reading of the literary texts. Annie Rouxel, Gérard Langlade and Marie-José Fourtanier propose the another notion of the literary reading “which is interested in the reconfiguration of the text by the real reader and presents plural modes of realization. There is thus a movement of the interest: from the virtual reader to the real reader, and, consequently, from the text of the work to the text of the reader ". This creative reader is the one as well as we find in our classes, the one who, in the contact of his culture, becomes the " subject common reader ". This reader exceeds the individual frame of the reception to share a common reading with those who have the same cultural heritage. The text becomes then as a cultural bridge between them. This " subject common reader " his history reacts to stimuli in touch with his past and: the interpretation that he makes actions(shares) of the characters, the situations, even the vocabulary used by the author is so shared by several other pupils readers. An exchange becomes established, unspoken cultural and historic are individually expressed and grouped together within the classes. It is only when we noticed that the observations of the pupils were identical to more than sixty percent than we elaborated this notion of “subject common reader”. It is about a cultural reader, about a multiple reader in the sense that he represents the reception of almost all his community. The reader who begins this journey within the fiction is persuaded to live in reality events which mark him. He cries, he laughs, he gets angry against a situation or against a character, against Atala, who goes away from her culture and wears a crucifix instead of the trick and dreams, against Chactas who travelled in Paris and behaved in European, giving up a part of himself. But this reading of the other one, this reading of one is influenced by the cultural heritage of the pupils, by the situation which they live at the time of the reading. The reader begins a “reading in shadow". What I call " reading in shadow ", is the reflection of the text, this other possible reading, hidden behind the book, the unfaithful reading to the text, but which arises from the text, a little as a shadow and its object. The reader imagines, weaves the another text everything around that of the author. We shall thus see during this analysis, that the pupils readers of diverse cultural spaces have a reception and a perception of texts, different in certain points of that of the others. It is a kind of identity lectoriale common to a culture. Atala of Chateaubriand is the work retained to demonstrate that the reading of a work is certainly plural because it addresses all the readers and can be perceived by various manners according to the "reader", but also community because it allows a cultural group to find known elements. It is the book which in spite of its success in the XIXth century, of its indisputable influence on the texts which succeeded it, is only few or not studied at the school. This reflection will use diverse studies, pupils-reader's numerous works as well as documents and investigate, as that led with 379 teachers of overseas, between 2007 and 2009. And we shall see, throughout this thesis, that the triad defined by the theorists: TEXT-AUTHOR-READER, would have to integrate a new authority: the PATRIMONIAL COMMUNITY, interacting with the subject-common

Full textIn 1960, the publication of Matin des magiciens, written by Louis Pauwels and Jacques Bergier, marks the beginning of a literary phenomenon commonly known as “réalisme fantastique”. First fuelled by the review Planète then by numerous independant authors such as Robert Charroux, the réalisme fantastique enjoys great success in France, until the late 70’s.This thesis aims at defining réalisme fantastique and determining the reasons behind its success then sudden disappearance. Using Gérard Noiriel’s socio-historical methodology, we suggest an approach that falls at once within cultural and religious history and the sociology of religions, sciences and literature. If the development of réalisme fantastique may be understood using Pierre Bourdieu’s literary field theory, it can also be construed as a way of reshaping religion, which is a distinctive feature of post-war decades. Presenting a particular form of esotericism called “mainstream esotericism”, the réalisme fantastique constitutes a way of thinking lying between the cultic milieu, New Age and occulture.Because of this unusual status, we propose to see the réalisme fantastique as a cultural paradigm that offers an alternative to the prevailing model, governed by science. This paradigm develops its very own knowledge system and values by blending esotericism, religion and science. Finally, this study focuses on the impact of secularization on esotericism. By establishing a link with counter-culture, we seek to demonstrate how the esoteric rhetoric managed to develop itself within French culture, to the point of becoming nowadays an ‘ordinary’ element

Full textThe rapid growth of wireless communication systems has led to a demand for low-cost, low-power and high-performance radiofrequency (RF) receivers. Many efforts are competing to increase the integration level of the RF functions in a low-cost silicon process, such as CMOS. This PhD thesis deals with design and characterization of monolithic CMOS polyphase filters. Those polyphase filters represent an efficient solution for high image rejection and great accuracy quadrature generation in RF receiver front-ends. The first part of this thesis sets a state of the art of actual wireless communication standards and RF receiver architectures. It introduces the importance of the image frequency suppression as an essential performance criterion in RF receivers. The second part presents a complete analysis of polyphase filters, which is used to calibrate the optimal components values and to quantify the component mismatch impact in the Image Rejection Ratio (IRR) degradation. The next part focuses on component matching techniques and interconnection line modeling, together with layout symmetry, to be taken into account in order to reduce the non-idealities impact (mismatch, parasitic capacitance and resistor). Those studies result in a proposition of a complete design method, aiming to optimize the polyphase filter design and to improve its performances. The evaluation of the proposed method is carried out with some test-cases in full CMOS technology. The final part of this thesis presents two proposed topologies of tunable polyphase filters that can be used in multi-standard applications. Then, a receiver front-end, integrating polyphase filters, is designed in order to validate and confirm the proposed solutions

Full textSince the advent of the first French digital television broadcasts in 2005, the question of mobility reception has been often asked. Beyond the normative choices that tend to prefer the DVB-H standard to current DVB-T standards, the question of the uses and video quality remains a key issue. All the work already undertaken to make digital television mobile does not currently provide sufficient comfort for embedded upscale applications such as those desired in car, train, etc. . . To improve the Quality Of Service (QoS), a technique used is the diversity reception. In DVB-T, as applications and current studies do not provide information on propagation phenomena the choices of diversity algorithms, which are made in this context, are arbitrary. The CAVITY project proposes, with an analysis of the propagation channel, to develop and test different algorithms. This thesis is declines in three parts: The first part is to achieve a multi-antenna system able to achieve a temporal and spatial channel sounding in mobility conditions, through the reception of DVB-T broadcast signals. The second part is to achieve measurements to characterize the propagation channel phenomena in order to find a data diversity processing strategy. Finally, the third part is to propose new algorithms and parameters to improve reception mobility of DVB-T signal. The aim of this thesis is to improve visibility of propagation phenomena in DVB-T channel and regarding this knowledge to propose an adapted strategy for the reception of digital television in mobile conditions. By extension, this thesis may also enable to the television actors such as the DAB, T-DMB, ATSC to make the same choices to improve mobility reception of such digital systems that use the same basic modulation principle

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to reconstruct the set of theoretical questionings supposed by the authors who participate in Posterior Analytics’ reception during the 13th century. Considering that the doctrine contained in this Aristotle’s work is difficult to interpret in a systematical approach is inevitable that its progressive reception would have been guided by metaphysics and epistemological questionings, partially shared by these authors. The present research is an attempt to track down these questionings, with the objective of proposing a systematic reconstruction of the theory contained in the commentaries of the Posterior Analytics during that period. This systematic reconstruction offers a unified vision of the aspects assessed in this investigation. This due to the identification of a general question which would determine the orientation of specific ones. Thomas Aquinas is the author about whom most of the analyses are focused. But always considering the aim of comprehending questions which guide all this tradition of comments, two other comments have been studied: Robert Grosseteste and Alberto the Great. The thesis proposed is that the Posterior Analytics’ reception during the 13th century, reflects an attempt to answer the following question: which characteristics must a perfect knowledge possess? In accordance with this thesis, the doctrines developed in commentaries regarding this Aristotle’s work did not seek to propose a method of true knowledge of reality. The properties of a demonstration, regarding its shape and content of the propositions that compose it, would describe an ideal of perfect knowledge

Full textNowadays, ultrasound imaging is a common diagnostic tool thanks to its non-invasive behavior and relatively cheap equipment. Classic medical echographic imaging is based on the linear response of the biological tissue. However harmonic imaging, based on the harmonic frequencies generated by the nonlinear properties of the tissue, is more and more used for clinical application. The quantification of nonlinearity is based on the evaluation of the nonlinearity parameter which strongly influences the harmonics generation. The nonlinearity parameter estimation using an echographic approach would bring new modalities for imaging and diagnosis. However the echographic method for nonlinearity estimation is limited by two factors: the presence of speckles in the image and the focalization used during transmission, which concentrates the energy at one particular depth. The objectives of this thesis work are developing novel approaches to reduce the speckle noise using original smoothing techniques and improving the nonlinearity parameter estimation in echo mode using new transmission-reception strategies. Firstly, new speckle noise reduction approaches were investigated. The Thomson’s multitaper approach was proposed, consisting in using several different orthogonal apodizations during beamforming. This method was combined to a coherent plane-wave compounding transmission-reception strategy improving the spatial resolution and the contrast while improving the frame rate. In a second time, the nonlinearity parameter was estimated using a comparative method. The second-harmonic pressure field of a reference area was compared to the pressure field of an area where the nonlinearity parameter is unknown. However in echo-mode, the pressure field of the medium is unknown. It is assumed in this thesis work that the local pressure can be derived from envelope image local amplitude if the speckle noise is smoothed. The nonlinearity parameter estimation has been improved using plane-wave transmission and orthogonal apodizations compared to the use of a single focalization transmission

Full textFrom his birth in 1812 until his death in 1870, Charles Dickens was part of the industrial development era of the 19th century which brought about the consumer society and new forms of reading that transformed the use of documents. Dickens comments on these different forms and uses throughout his work, both in his novels and in his essays, in which he demonstrates a persistent uncertainty concerning the power of the author. This dissertation aims at reflecting on the role of the reader and the act of reading as they are presented in Dickens’s novels. Dickens’s characters are presented as concrete readers who imperfectly interpret the various texts they are presented with. The reception of written texts is subject on the one hand to the character’s subjectivity and on the other hand the materiality of the document which comes between the reader and the text. Thus whatever sense is construed by a Dickensien reader can differ from the original intent of the text’s author. Contrary to an orally delivered message, a written text is part of a differed communication into which subjectivity and matter irrupt. Considering these two parameters within the process of written communication, this work adopts the perspectives of the Anglo-Saxon critical study called Book History. The analysis of the textual object which is the document is connected with the theoretical reflections on objects as considered in Thing Theory. Together with these theories, this work is interested in “the material imagination” in Dickens’s work which thinks and dreams about the materiality of the document. We set out to understand why and how Dickens paradoxically attempts to deconstruct inert materials such as paper, signboards, stones as media for writing to then examine his dream of living texts which find its answer in man, beyond matter

Full textThis dissertation deals with the way in which the child is pictured in contemporary British children’s literature. This study analyses the image of the child in the following works of fiction published between 1995 and 2005 by British authors : Philip Pullman, His Dark Materials ; Eoin Colfer, Artemis Fowl ; Jonathan Stroud, The Amulet of Samarkand ; J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone ; Kate Thompson, The New Policeman ; Alex Shearer, The Hunted ; Hilary McKay, Saffy’s Angel ; Anthony Browne, Into the Forest ; Lauren Child, Hubert Horatio Bartle Bobton-Trent ; Oliver Jeffers, Lost and Found. The analysis of the portraits of child characters and of the representations of their environment (both spatial and temporal) enables us to create a picture of the contemporary child as British children’s authors imagine him. The image of the child in adult literature has often been examined, but its analysis in the works that are meant to be read by children offers a different perspective, which illustrates both the reality of the child as it is perceived by the writers, and the ideal child which the author would like his young reader to emulate. Theories of reception enable us to investigate the child reader who is hiding between the lines of the text and to demonstrate the increasing autonomy granted to the child in literature, be it the child character or the child reader

Full textThis thesis is based on a very simple evidence: any portrait photographer sends an image back to his model, and no investigation has been done yet on this subject of the feedback of photographic portrait. But this question of the feedback is a constitutive part of of the photographic portrait: while sitting, the model surrenders or not, anticipating a feedback image that will often be sensibly differnet of the one he expected. Starting from this evidence, I revisit history of photography, as well as my own experience as a social photographer, to determine the interactions between photographer and models from this point of view. Photography, by itself indifferent, is revealed only in the stream of intersubjective relationship

Full textThis research explores the literary corpora used in the context of the teaching of French as a foreign language from the point of view of formats and variation in text scales. The primacy of complete work and the condemnation of the chosen text extracts are analysed through a historical approach that sheds lights on the instability of the values given to the extract or long reading in the context of teaching. The analysis of out of context2French editorial corpora highlights that formats come from a dual heritage: chosen excerpts and authentic documents. Extraction obeys two matrices, classicisation, which responds to acceptability constraints, and standardisation, which responds to accessibility constraints. Extraction follows a double continuum organised around two axes, identity/transformation, and opacity/transparency. The link to the work is mostly forgotten. The corpora produced by teachers, once contextualised, present more flexible, idiosyncratic features, taking into account the scales of texts and their reception. Through a comparative study, we observe the effects of text formats on their reception by allophone readers: text extracts enable a restitution of the microstructural scale, integral readings without support create a partial reading with recomposition of the macrostructure and adapted readings allow a fictional immersion that plays all the scales of the reader. We offer, for the training of future teachers, didactics of the variation of scales that take into account the effects of formats on the reception of texts by learners

Full textThe SAIC/MAIC (Single/Multiple Antenna Interference Cancellation) receiver, recently introduced, is able to separate up to 2N synchronous users with N antennas for the radiocommunications networks using rectilinear or quasi-rectilinear modulations. A such receiver, operational in GSM handsets since 2006, exploits the second order non-circularity of signals and gives rise to an optimal widely linear (WL) filter. This receiver has been shown to be powerful for synchronous users without any frequency offsets (for example Doppler shift), but its behaviour in the presence of asynchronous users having potentially non zero carrier residues, omnipresent in many radio applications, has not yet been the subject of theoretical studies, which doesn't allow us to know their damage. For this reason, the purpose of the first part of this work is to present an analysis of SAIC/MAIC receiver performances, implemented via an MMSE approach with training sequence, with two users not necessarily synchronized with frequency shifts. To simplify the analytical developments, we limited the theoretical analysis to some particular cases with rectilinear modulations. Hence, simple and interpretable analytical expressions were given and analyzed. We proved in particular that the performance is less degraded in the case of a shift on the useful than in the presence of a drift on the jammer. Furthermore, the degradation increases with desynchronization of the two signals. To precise the range of validity of analytical approximations, numerical illustrations were made using as parameters those of the GSM standard in order to apply this study to this standard in particular and cellular networks in general. Extending the analysis to quasi-rectilinear modulations had required the implementation of a spatio-temporal filtering. We have studied the impact of the size of the spatio-temporal filter on the performance of MMSE SAIC/MAIC receiver for quasi-rectilinear modulations (GMSK and MSK) in the presence of residual frequencies. The study reveals that with standard carrier residues, this receiver remains relatively robust and doesn't require a compensation. The second part of this work considers frequency-selective channels and is developing a SIMO MLSE receiver for a useful signal with any linear modulation in the presence of an additive Gaussian centered stationary temporally and spatially colored and potentially non-circular noise, starting from a general problem of detection of a waveform. We have shown that SIMO MLSE receiver consists of a WL filter, a sampler at the symbol rate and a recursive minimization of a metric that can be solved by the Viterbi algorithm. The case of quasi-rectilinear modulations is also considered. Within this framework, we had proved that the SIMO MLSE receiver has the same structure through a postreatment derotation. All these filters are interpreted as WL multidimensional matched filters (WL MMF) in the sense that they maximize the SNR of the current symbol at output. Then, we extended the MLSE receiver structure developed in case of a noncircular gaussian noise but this time cyclostationary, so as to approximate radio cellular applications. We call this new receiver "pseudo-MLSE" because its structure was imposed. By conjecturing that the performances by per symbol error probability are directly related to the SNR of the current symbol, general expressions of this SNR are given for MLSE and pseudo MLSE receivers with stationary and cyclostationary potentially noncircular interferences. Interpretable formulas of these SNR were given in special cases and numerical simulations were presented to show performance gains of the receivers we have introduced relative to conventional MLSE receivers derived under the assumption of circular stationary noise

Full textThe Catholic Magisterium welcomed the theory of evolution and recognizes its value. The encyclical Humani Generis constitutes its key moment. However, the Magisterium went no further. It declined to sacrifice the cornerstone of traditional Christian anthropology on the altar of evolutionary theory. It insists on the direct creation of the human soul par God. A few theologians like G. Martelet, J.-M. Maldamé and J. Arnould, saw the need to articulate this theological discourse and the advances of evolutionary theory, where the conceptuality of emergence dominates ; an approach that is based on the idea that if God is unique then the truth of is revelation would by no means oppose to the truth showed by the world. The present study attempts to grasp the stance taken by the Magisterium, from Pius XII to John-Paul II. It explores the contribution of the three mentioned theologians to a deeper reflection on the theology of creation, on how their work has contributed to the understanding of the human identity and God’s action within creation. The scientific knowledge contributes to the improvement of our awareness of the Universe and mankind. Indeed, the understanding of God’s action in the world is at stake. It is not considered according to mechanical patterns where the Creator is described as a cosmic engineer. It is more represented in terms of support and arousing of the potential within the innermost being. The least we can say is that the Bible is not as interested about the past of mankind but rather about its origin. According to the Bible, answering the call of God and the one of mankind in terms of responsibility defines what being human is. That is what being in the image of God

Full textDuring a particularly dense production period running in the 1980s and 1990s, the so-called "postdramatic" theater regularly attempted to break from all forms of narration utilized in more conventional dramatic forms. It became a recurring critical leitmotif to say that postdramatic theater either eschewed narration entirely or rendered it problematic, whether as a qualifier to its production (in dramaturgical terms) or to explain audience reaction. However, repeated denial definitely inspires doubt. I was concerned that one particular way of thinking about theater seemed to refuse or rule out such a consistent and structural element as the narrative (culturally, dramatically, as well as in literary terms). I therefore wished to be sure that certain postdramatic pieces really had not retained any form of storytelling, had the choice been made implicitly or explicitly to exclude it. My decision to begin this investigation was triggered by two specified phenomena: a narrative intuition which manifests itself whether one wants it or not when one sees one of these pieces (what is its foundation?), and the existence of texts produced at the reception level which still seem to form a narrative stream when examined. I also felt the need to undertake a more detailed analysis of this non-narrative poetics as laid out by its creators

THE SECOND ONE USES A SUB-SAMPLING ARCHITECTURE, WHERE THE CURRENT CONSUMED BY THE FREQUENCY SYNTHESIZER CAN BE REDUCED. Full textThis thesis analyses the modalities under which serial narratives are experienced in media culture, looking at the different media in which serials and series were developed from the 19th to the 21st century (newspapers, comics, cinema and television in particular). The way different audiences relate to serial narratives is grounded in the dynamics of discontinuous distribution and recurrence, thus framing their expectation of a renewed event. Serial experiences are not limited to the moment of reading or viewing, nor to the “narrative object” as such: they extend beyond it in various ways during the inter-episodic waiting time. Moreover, since these experiences are based on exchange and sharing, they are inseparable from the sociability they imply, as well as from diversely mediatized interactions between production and reception, which favor the emergence of interpretive communities. Therefore, these experiences are conditioned by the media from which they stem: the thematic and the formal dimensions cannot be separated from the material conditions, within the contexts of production and reception. In order to describe the specific modes of engagement of audiences with serial narratives in all its complexity, I follow an integrated approach, by studying narrative devices and the semantic dimension of serial narratives as well as their sociocultural uses

Full textThis research aims at shedding light on the historical background of the avatars of two mechanisms now integrated into the French system of private international law: lois de police (i.e. overriding mandatory rules) and (international) ordre public (i.e. public policy). Both share the common feature of opposing the normal interplay of choice-of-law rules and rely on Art. 3, para. 1 of the 1804 Civil Code. Preventing by pre-emption infringements of utilitas publica vel communis or reacting to them by eviction from the normally applicable law, these two types of norms have emerged from a common history beginning with the antecedents of prohibitive and territorial statutes identified by medieval romano-canonical commentators. Then members of the Dutch and French Schools adapted the two concepts to the prevailing hypothesis at the end of the Ancien Régime, that of conflicts of sovereignties. In 1804, lois de police and ordre public were collected in the French Civil Code. Thanks to the joint work of scholars and case law, on the one hand, and to a reaction to the hybrid notion of lois d’ordre public that emerged over the next century, on the other hand, the distinction between the two concepts was made possible at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. As conflict of sovereignties declined, leading to a loss of interest in public law, or even in criminal law, and as a more private-law-driven representation arose, without ignoring, however, growing state interventionism, the distinction has been confirmed between the two concepts: lois de police or d’application immédiate, promoting the utilitas communis, and exception d’ordre public, defending fundamental values
