Abstract:
The topic of migration raises important and challenging normative questions about the legitimacy of state power, the boundaries of political membership, and justice within and across state borders. States exercise power over borders, but what, if anything, justifies this power? Is it morally permissible for liberal democratic states to prevent their citizens from exiting the country and exclude prospective migrants from entering? If liberal democratic states are justified in excluding some and accepting others, how should they decide whom to admit? This review examines how contemporary political theorists and philosophers have answered these questions. First, I examine the conventional view that says states have the right to control immigration; second, I discuss arguments for open borders. The third section examines critique of open borders, and the fourth section considers more recent arguments that have been advanced in favor of the conventional view. I conclude with some suggestions for future research.

Abstract:
This contribution concentrates upon three main tasks, i.e. to introduce some basic and often rather problematic aspects that are tied to creation and application of migration theories, to briefly describe and explain selected important migration theories/concepts as they developed in the course of time and to discuss a dichotomy between micro and macro approaches while pinpointing problems and challenges that follow from only a partial reflection of a "complex migratory reality". While contributing to improving "conceptualization" of migratory theory building activities, the authors pinpointed the importance to work on new typologies of migration while structuring migratory reality by following differentiating dimensions: 1. "Spatial-administration scale" (internal versus international migration movements), 2. "Analytical scale" - "micro" (individual) versus "macro" (structures) approaches and 3. Developmental aspect (industrial versus post-industrial era).

Abstract:
Key theories of international migrations: overview, critique and perspectivesThe article aims at critical review of the key theories of international migration. The starting point is the assumption that a critical review of theoretical literature is a necessary component of the research process, especially regarding such rapidly growing field as migration studies. The authors analyze the most important theories developed in migration studies (economic theories, structural-historical theories, migration networks and transnationalism) by pointing out their historical contexts, drawbacks and limitations. At the same time they indicate the new research perspectives, which include relations between migration theory and a broader social context as well as the dialectic of mobility and immobility. Autorzy analizują najważniejsze koncepcje wypracowane w ramach badań migracyjnych: teorie ekonomiczne, strukturalno-historyczne, sieci migracyjnych i transnacjonalizmu. Pokazują kontekst historyczny oraz wady i ograniczenia każdej z teorii wskazując nowe perspektywy badawcze: powiązania teorii migracji z szerszym kontekstem społecznym i dialektyką mobilności/braku mobilności.

Abstract:
This article reviews theoretical perspectives on migration and development, starting with nineteenth-century political economy theories focused on “colonizing” migrations from England and other European powers and concluding with the emerging literature on immigrant transnationalism and its consequences for sending nations. The general concept of equilibrium has until currently dominated orthodox economic theories of both colonizing and labor migrations from peripheral regions to advanced nations. The counteroffensive, led by Gunnar Myrdal and theorists of the dependency school, centered on the notion of cumulative causation leading to increasing poverty and the depopulation of peripheral sending areas. Both perspectives registered numerous empirical anomalies, stemming from a common view of migration flows as occurring between separate politico-economic entities. An alternative conceptualization of such flows as internal to an overarching global system has improved our understanding of causes and consequences of labor migration and has framed the back-and-forth complexities of these movements captured in the novel notion of transnationalism.

Abstract:
Massive recruitment of foreign labour occurred in all Gulf States since the beginning of oil exploitation in 1973. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE) the foreign population accounted for up to 75 per cent of the total population and up to 90 per cent of the labour force in 2000. Even though the migration system is of temporary character, many foreign workers spend dozens of years in the country. This study aims to reveal two fundamental issues. On one hand, it will be shown why a sample of migrant workers came to the United Arab Emirates. Contemporary theories on international migration will be presented to analyze the results of the field study undertaken during four weeks in the emirate of Dubai. On the other hand, living and working conditions for those migrant workers in the UAE are presented. Formal regulations and international conventions are compared to the actual practices in the UAE. Special focus will be given to formal regulations and widespread informal practices that easily generate irregularity.

Rajendra, Tisha. "The Rights of the Stranger: Justice, Responsibility and the Ethics of Migration." Thesis, Boston College, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/3719.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: David Hollenbach
Transnational migration presents a problem for universal human rights. Because migrants do not have full citizenship in their countries of residence, they are left out of the distribution of social goods within a nation-state. Contemporary theories of justice largely remain trapped in the framework of the "bounded society," which members enter by birth and leave by death. The dissertation argues that the protection of universal human rights depends on turning particular relationships of exploitation into relationships of co-responsibility. The dissertation draws on two sources of Christian ethics, the Bible and Catholic social teaching on migration in order to maintain both the importance of the unity of the human family, the universality of human rights, and the importance of the political community. The work of three political philosophers suggests that in order to respond to transnational migration, an ethics of migration must maintain both the universality of human rights and the moral significance of the political community, but must discard the ideal of the bounded society. The resources of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament indicate that care for the stranger must be foundational to a Christian ethics of migration. Catholic social teaching on migration maintains both the universality of human rights and the right of the state to control its borders, but ultimately fails to address whether and in what circumstances the state should prioritize its citizens over migrants and potential migrants. The dissertation uses Jon Sobrino's reflections on Christian solidarity in order to address this lacuna in Catholic social teaching on migration. It argues that the political community must protect the human rights of migrants because, in most cases, migrants are in relationships with citizens

Abstract:
Immigration into Europe has always been at the center of EU’s agenda. With the candidacy of Turkey for entry into the EU, the issue of immigration is being discussed with a new intensity. That is why this paper aims to understand the dynamics that will govern Turkish migration into EU after membership and to provide a sound basis for its complicated nature. In order to do that, different theories of migration have been categorized at different levels of approaches and analyzed to understand the reasons for migration. To ground these theories in the reality of migration, the statistics on countries that joined the EU in 2004 and 2007 have been used. After identifying the reasons why citizens of these new member states migrate, prospective Turkish migration has been analyzed accordingly. It has been found out that the reasons for Turkish migration will be mostly the same as those for new member states’ citizens. As a result of this, it has been concluded that the prospective Turkish migration will be extremely diverse and complicated and that the directions of migration will not only be from Turkey to Europe but also from Europe to Turkey.

Abstract:
This study has aimed to examine the actions of the European Union and its member states during the on-going refugee crisis. The EU is founded on a certain set of values and institutions that were clearly abandoned by more than one of the actors of the EU in the face of the overwhelming refugee crisis. The purpose is thus to investigate the cause behind these decisions by using two European integration theories. Neofunctionalism and Security Communities were chosen because of their founding role in the field of theories and because they constitute a so called hard case. The study concludes that the reason for these actions has its explanation in the lack of trust and common values between the member states. The crisis is also perceived by some actors as an outside threat due to the securitization of the European identity.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the phenomenon of irregular migration from the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana to Libya. It draws on migration theories to explain the underlying drivers of the phenomenon in the region. Many studies on irregular migration in Sub-Saharan Africa have predominantly attributed it to the push/pull theory. The objective here is to go beyond this stereotypical way of theorizing irregular migration in Sub-Saharan Africa by drawing on a wide range of migration theories to explain the underlying drivers of irregular migration from the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana to Libya. The evidence suggests that the drivers of irregular migration in the area under study are complex and nested in a broad-spectrum of social, cultural, moral, economic, historical, etc. context. Therefore, a single theory is inadequate to present a comprehensive explanation for the underlying drivers of the subject. It is revealed that there is the emergence of contemporary competing factors such as sports betting and internet fraud with some of the root causes of the phenomenon in the region. Hence, some of the root causes are weakened by these contemporary factors.

Abstract:
In the 1980s engineers faced major challenges from severe concrete deterioration from AAR (Alkali Aggregate Reaction) and from corrosion. The construction of the Channel and Storebaelt Tunnels required major improvements in specifying concrete to combat both these problems. Anglo-Danish cooperation of consultants and research centres led to innovations in cementitious materials, assessment of aggregates, the testing of materials and predicting deterioration. Since then RILEM has provided an international framework to guide developments on AAR diagnosis, appraisal, testing and specification. Quantitative durability design remains in its infancy. Rapid testing data do not predict migration over many decades. Fick’s law models neglect the physical and chemical processes of chloride migration. Data from old structures is needed for calibrating models and validating theories.

The significant growing in offshore operations increases the risk of a pipeline rupture, even considering the high standards of safety involved. Throughout a submarine leakage, four different amounts of oil may be accounted. The first one is the oil volume released until the leakage detection. The second one is the volume leaked throughout mitigation initiatives (e.g. pump shut-down and valve closure). The third parcel is the amount released by gravitational flow. Finally, the fourth and last amount of oil is released due to the water-oil entrainment, generally known as advective migration. Normally, a considerable amount of oil is released in this step. It begins just after the internal pipeline pressure becomes equal to the external one. The present work continues to introduce a mathematical alternative approach, based on the theories of perturbation and unstable immiscible displacement, to accurately estimate the leakage kinetics and the amount of oil released by the advective migration phenomenon. Situations considering different holes sizes and thickness were tested experimentally and through simulations. Additional experiments were accomplished using smooth and rough edge surfaces, besides different slopes (using the horizontal plane as reference). Those experiments permitted a preliminary evaluation of the importance of these factors. The results obtained with the model showed good agreement with experimental data in many situations considered.

Abstract:
Abstract High-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) is characterized by inherent safety, superior proliferation resistance, and high efficiency, with a promising prospect on electric power product and high-temperature heat and hydrogen production. The enhanced safety mostly relies on the good retention of tristructural-isotropic (TRISO) coated fuel particles for fission products. Most radioactive nuclides are retained in the fuel element dispersed with a large amount of TRISO coated fuel particles during normal and off-normal transients. However, silver can pass through the intact TRISO coated fuel particle and this has been reported by researchers worldwide. Numerous studies have focused on the migration of silver and tried to interpret its unique behavior. Additionally, several theories have been proposed and abnormal occurrences have been ascribed to excess silicon, chemical degradation of SiC, grain boundaries, long columnar grains, nano-pores, nano-cracks, re-wetting process, lattice diffusions, and so on. However, this problem has not been completely solved so far. This paper introduces the general diffusion theory for fission products in the spherical particle, reviews recent theoretical models and mechanisms on silver migration and discusses the diffusion features of silver under different mechanisms. Based on the current investigations, several suggestions have been posed to end debate on silver migration in SiC. These suggestions can lay a good foundation for further studies on migration behavior of silver.

Abstract:
Even considering the high standards of safety involved, the significant and continuous increase in offshore oil exploitation rise the risks of a pipeline rupture, leading to oil spills. If an oil leakage occur, it is necessary to accurately quantify the volume released to correctly foresee the potential environmental impacts and define actions to soften them and clean up the oil spill. The present article introduces a mathematical alternative approach, based on the theories of perturbation and unstable immiscible displacement, to evaluate the occurrence or not of oil leakages through the advective migration phenomenon and estimate the oil volume released. According to preliminary results, the model shows to be promising in accurate estimate the oil volume leaked from a submarine pipeline in case of accident.
