Abstract:
Massive recruitment of foreign labour occurred in all Gulf States since the beginning of oil exploitation in 1973. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE) the foreign population accounted for up to 75 per cent of the total population and up to 90 per cent of the labour force in 2000. Even though the migration system is of temporary character, many foreign workers spend dozens of years in the country. This study aims to reveal two fundamental issues. On one hand, it will be shown why a sample of migrant workers came to the United Arab Emirates. Contemporary theories on international migration will be presented to analyze the results of the field study undertaken during four weeks in the emirate of Dubai. On the other hand, living and working conditions for those migrant workers in the UAE are presented. Formal regulations and international conventions are compared to the actual practices in the UAE. Special focus will be given to formal regulations and widespread informal practices that easily generate irregularity.

Rajendra, Tisha. "The Rights of the Stranger: Justice, Responsibility and the Ethics of Migration." Thesis, Boston College, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/3719.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: David Hollenbach
Transnational migration presents a problem for universal human rights. Because migrants do not have full citizenship in their countries of residence, they are left out of the distribution of social goods within a nation-state. Contemporary theories of justice largely remain trapped in the framework of the "bounded society," which members enter by birth and leave by death. The dissertation argues that the protection of universal human rights depends on turning particular relationships of exploitation into relationships of co-responsibility. The dissertation draws on two sources of Christian ethics, the Bible and Catholic social teaching on migration in order to maintain both the importance of the unity of the human family, the universality of human rights, and the importance of the political community. The work of three political philosophers suggests that in order to respond to transnational migration, an ethics of migration must maintain both the universality of human rights and the moral significance of the political community, but must discard the ideal of the bounded society. The resources of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament indicate that care for the stranger must be foundational to a Christian ethics of migration. Catholic social teaching on migration maintains both the universality of human rights and the right of the state to control its borders, but ultimately fails to address whether and in what circumstances the state should prioritize its citizens over migrants and potential migrants. The dissertation uses Jon Sobrino's reflections on Christian solidarity in order to address this lacuna in Catholic social teaching on migration. It argues that the political community must protect the human rights of migrants because, in most cases, migrants are in relationships with citizens

Abstract:
Immigration into Europe has always been at the center of EU’s agenda. With the candidacy of Turkey for entry into the EU, the issue of immigration is being discussed with a new intensity. That is why this paper aims to understand the dynamics that will govern Turkish migration into EU after membership and to provide a sound basis for its complicated nature. In order to do that, different theories of migration have been categorized at different levels of approaches and analyzed to understand the reasons for migration. To ground these theories in the reality of migration, the statistics on countries that joined the EU in 2004 and 2007 have been used. After identifying the reasons why citizens of these new member states migrate, prospective Turkish migration has been analyzed accordingly. It has been found out that the reasons for Turkish migration will be mostly the same as those for new member states’ citizens. As a result of this, it has been concluded that the prospective Turkish migration will be extremely diverse and complicated and that the directions of migration will not only be from Turkey to Europe but also from Europe to Turkey.

Abstract:
This study has aimed to examine the actions of the European Union and its member states during the on-going refugee crisis. The EU is founded on a certain set of values and institutions that were clearly abandoned by more than one of the actors of the EU in the face of the overwhelming refugee crisis. The purpose is thus to investigate the cause behind these decisions by using two European integration theories. Neofunctionalism and Security Communities were chosen because of their founding role in the field of theories and because they constitute a so called hard case. The study concludes that the reason for these actions has its explanation in the lack of trust and common values between the member states. The crisis is also perceived by some actors as an outside threat due to the securitization of the European identity.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the phenomenon of irregular migration from the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana to Libya. It draws on migration theories to explain the underlying drivers of the phenomenon in the region. Many studies on irregular migration in Sub-Saharan Africa have predominantly attributed it to the push/pull theory. The objective here is to go beyond this stereotypical way of theorizing irregular migration in Sub-Saharan Africa by drawing on a wide range of migration theories to explain the underlying drivers of irregular migration from the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana to Libya. The evidence suggests that the drivers of irregular migration in the area under study are complex and nested in a broad-spectrum of social, cultural, moral, economic, historical, etc. context. Therefore, a single theory is inadequate to present a comprehensive explanation for the underlying drivers of the subject. It is revealed that there is the emergence of contemporary competing factors such as sports betting and internet fraud with some of the root causes of the phenomenon in the region. Hence, some of the root causes are weakened by these contemporary factors.

Abstract:
This is an ethnographic case study, based in participant observation, which investigates and analyzes how the everyday relationships between Europeans, South Americans expatriates & Angolan nationals, are structured in a common transnational labor community in Angola, named Cambambe. This study investigates if there are any features of post-colonial power relations that affect and shape the interactions between those three communities. Thus, if the contemporary forms of relationship, as expressed by this community, can still be compared to that old hard power stereotype namely labor relations from the colonial past, or if those have changed with modernity. In doing so, this study equally analyzes not only how the interactions between the three communities is expressed in terms of identity, culture and ethnic belonging, but also how such expressions bring about tangible consequences for the groups relating to their social and institutional positions inside the working community. Furthermore, this study examines if the three group populations are able to go beyond their ethnic and cultural boundaries in order to create common zones of togetherness and empowerment, and if so, how these zones are shaped. To do so, the analysis observes how the intergroup perceives power into their relational context, focusing in four dimensions, namely; rationality, perceived justice, material resources and identity. Moreover, this is a multidisciplinary analysis which makes use of the theoretical lenses provided by the post-colonial theory, psychology of intergroup relations and power theories in international relations, to shed light into the understanding of contemporary labor communities and in the position of the post-colonial subjects in society in a North to South perspective.

The main objective of this essay is to analyze the challenges caused by today's modern phenomenon of change in our society and to discuss it in relationship to the process of migration. In doing so I focus on questions like, "what does it really mean when a person becomes a migrant and what does it mean to be the host country?" Becoming a migrant or a host country is a complex process which involves variety of challenges both for individuals and the locality. New inventions are made in the field of science and technology. Societies and social institutions are subjected to change and we undergo several changes or modifications to fit in to this changing system. This makes integration process more tedious and complex. I feel that the process of accepting and adopting begins from the very first moment in the new society. The one who comes in also brings in new cultural perspectives, new ideologies and beliefs. This establishes the background of plurality which has both positive and negative consequences.

I believe that every factor from bigger social institutions to minute incidents associated with an individual are of equal importance in understanding society as a whole. So I approach my research question here by considering both micro and macro theorists. I have also referred to migrations history of Sweden which provides general idea of types and mode of migration in the past few decades.

O'Shaughnessy, Ryan. "FACTORS DETERMINING HABITAT SELECTION BY SPRING MIGRATING WATERFOWL ALONG THE WABASH RIVER, ILLINOIS." OpenSIUC, 2014. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/962.

Full text
Abstract:
The main proponent of management of any animal species is habitat management. The ability of habitats to maintain species communities will depend on the variation in both habitat structure and composition. While spatial variation in habitat resources plays a critical role in determining the distribution of species, an equally important consideration that must be accounted for is temporal variation in the needs of the target species. Nutritional requirements, and thus the habitats used to fulfil those nutritional needs, will be different depending on if the individual is breeding, migrating, molting, enduring winter, or establishing a new range. For waterfowl, we currently assume that winter and migration are nutritionally stressful and are consequently the periods most limiting to populations. The theory of ideal free distribution assumes that animals distribute themselves according to the factor most limiting to their fitness. In the case of non-breeding waterfowl, this factor is believed to be food. We assume if habitats with abundant food resources are provided, waterfowl will make use of those habitats. Deviations from an ideal free distribution based on food become problematic for managers since these deviations will keep some areas from being exploited to their potential, while other areas may become over-exploited. Recent observations have made it clear that this assumption may need to be reconsidered for effective waterfowl management. In this dissertation I quantitatively examine the degree to which spring migrating waterfowl conform to, or deviate from, an ideal free distribution based on food. Since food availability was not expected to account for 100% of waterfowl distribution, I further investigated what other potential habitat components influence the distribution of spring migrating waterfowl. In the first chapter of this dissertation, I explicitly tested the influence of food availability on waterfowl distribution. A series of paired 0.42 ha (1 acre) plots were established in various habitat types. One plot in each pair was treated with corn to a density of 2000 kg/ha, while the remaining plot was used as a control. Background food availability was controlled for by taking core samples from each plot, and estimating the natural seed and invertebrate biomass. The abundance each species of waterfowl using the plots was recorded during morning and afternoon observation periods. Linear mixed models were used to assess how variations in food availability influenced distribution of waterfowl. Although the waterfowl community showed a significant preference for treatment plots, our ability to influence abundance was low. Food availability accounted for minimal variation in abundance of the waterfowl community as a whole or for each focal species. Since the results of the first chapter showed food availability to be a poor predictor of waterfowl distribution, in the second chapter I set out to determine other potential habitat variables could be responsible for driving waterfowl distribution during spring migration. After each observation period, a series of habitat structural measurements were made within each paired plot. Habitat measurements included water characteristics, vegetation structure, vegetation type, habitat type, and weather conditions. Linear mixed models and model selection were employed to determine which of the habitat characteristics showed the greatest ability to predict waterfowl abundance on study plots. Models containing precipitation and Wabash River flood stage predictor variables were the best performing, and were the best predictors of waterfowl abundance on study plots. The results from this chapter encouraged investigation into how environmental factors shape the formation of local duck communities are structured from regional pools. In the third chapter of this dissertation I investigate the relationship between local and regional waterfowl community structure and how this relationship is mediated through environmental filters which dictate what proportion of the regional species pool exists at local scales. To address this relationship, I tested three hypotheses: 1) resource availability drives species diversity at local scales; 2) similarity between local and regional habitats will result in a similar species community occurring at both scales, and; 3) increased heterogeneity of local habitat structure will result in more diverse waterfowl communities at local scales. I used Mahalanobis distance and cumulative standard deviation of habitat variables in conjunction with mixed models and model selection to compare hypotheses and determine which had the greatest potential for mediating local community structure from regional pools. Increasing resource abundance appeared to have the greatest influence over local duck diversity, but the model indicated that although species diversity could be increased by increasing food abundance, diversity at local scales would become saturated before becoming representative of the regional community.

Abstract:
Over time, human beings have migrated either to ensure their survival or to improve living conditions. Today, in the so-called globalized world, the trend is for a progressive removal of barriers to the free movement of people, goods and capital. Of the three, the population flows are currently the least mobile, given that population mobility and migration poses specific and complex problems for host and origin countries. From a theoretical point of view, until the 1970s, migration was a masculine phenomenon. Aspects related to gender were not considered because it was assumed that men migrated for work related reasons and women left their country of origin in order to be reunited with their emigrant husbands. This theoretical approach ignored the fact that, globally, the number of migrant women is only slightly lower than that of men and that not all women's movements are motivated by family reunification reasons. The increasing feminization of migration flows has gradually been theoretically acknowledged and gender issues are now considered in analyses that explain migration. In this dissertation we focus our attention on Brazilian immigrants in Portugal, in the first decade of this century, trying to identify their motivations and framing them in the theoretical frameworks that differentiate migration in terms of gender.

Abstract:
Can internet logic scheme be used as a basis to describe public policies evolution on renewable energies production and sharing in urban areas all over the world? The research project analyses the two networks (internet and energetic grids) architectures in actual and future urban areas. This analysis is connected with present and future forecasts energy productions from traditional fuels and from renewable sources. Theoretical analysis is conducted following a double conceptual pathway: - societal networks (Manuel Castells theory) and urban areas evolution (Saskia Sassen and Mike Davis) in order to picture the evolution of cities and towns in modern economies and in developing countries (Chapters 2 and 5); - Material and Energy Flow Analysis (approach by Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy) applied to renewable energy (Chapters 3 and 4) In Chapter 6 case studies are exposed on the deep cleavage between two different worlds: innovative, rich towns on a side and the landfills cities, slums on the other side. In the last part hypothesis and thesis are put together and open questions are explained (Chapter 7).

Abstract:
abstract: This dissertation explores Brain Drain and Brain Circulation phenomena at Taos Pueblo, an Indigenous community located in northern New Mexico, USA. The study examines the push and pull factors that influence the migration of educated Taos Pueblo tribal members. The information contained in this dissertation was derived from a study that was completed from 2016-2017 in Taos Pueblo. It has become evident that Indigenous communities worldwide are currently experiencing massive migration away from reservations, rural, and communities of origin and towards urbanized centers. The research conducted in this dissertation was focused on both patterns and trends and possible distinct reasons for intellectual migration, especially in Indigenous communities. This dissertation is separated into three sections. The first part is a journal article that focused on Taos Pueblo intellectual migration patterns. The article draws from studies literature review, fieldwork methodology, methods, data and findings. The second part is a book chapter that centers on a literature review and theory development. The book chapter includes a discussion on the study findings and contains broad recommendations for addressing brain drain and promoting brain circulation in Taos Pueblo. The third and final section is a Policy Paper is aimed at two audiences, the first is Indigenous Leadership and secondly, college age students who are interested in working with Indigenous Communities. Abstract:
This thesis deals with migration flows between Russian Federation and the Kyrgyz Republic. The aim is to analyze migration trends after the collapse of the Soviet Union and to characterize the impact and importance of migration on society and the state of Kyrgyzstan. Another issue is the use of the theories of migration in the post-Soviet space, where they are rarely used nowadays. The analysis begins with an introduction to the formation of the USSR with regard to migration processes on the territory of present-day Kyrgyzstan. Another part is devoted to ethnic migration and the last part deals with labor migration. This thesis illustrates the interdependence of migration and changes in the economy and society in Kyrgyzstan. Based on the evaluation of the causes of migration, migration theory could be used just for explanation of labor migration. Application of specific migration theories on labour migration is a matter for further research.

Abstract:
Migratory phenomena, for economic reasons , particularly in the context of globalization, are increasingly present in today's societies . It is an important issue , from a sociological point of view, since migration cause changes in societies, taking into account, in the Portuguese case, the current situation in which more and more Portuguese leave their country, looking for work and better living conditions in other countries. This is a central issue in the discussions and negotiations at national, regional and "global". This research has the primary objective to analyze the phenomenon of emigration of portuguese in the current context, as well as deepen their knowledge of the prospects presented by the different actors involved in the process. This study also aims to draw attention to the existence of a recent very specific migration: the emigration of portuguese to Angola (2008 to 2013). Currently in the economies booming as is the case of Angola there is a big gap and consequent highly qualified demand for labor, labor that enables portuguese qualified staff ensure career opportunities, academic and research in this country. Together to allow the needs of Angola to the individual needs of people, needs that can be economic, social or psychological nature as the demand for greater personal and professional fulfillment of portuguese frames. To achieve the main objective of this study, which was directed to Portuguese emigrants to Angola, it was decided to carry out semi-structured interviews and the application of a questionnaire. From the results obtained in this research, we note that the majority of respondents are men of working age, with medium / high qualifications and that emigration is essentially based on economic reasons.

Both Japan and Taiwan are suffering from serious labor shortage due to the impacts of low birth rate and aging societies. The main purpose of Japan’s Technical Intern Training Program (TITP) is to transfer technical skills to intern trainees, so as to make international contribution form Japan. Taiwan’s New Southbound Industry-Academia Collaboration Program for International Students emphasizes tailor-made professional skills training and internship in the related industries, as well as offer of high-quality technical and vocational education, industrial chain practices and learning of theories, increasing the employment rate of foreign interns immediately after graduation. Nevertheless, Japan’s Technical Intern Training Program and Taiwan’s New Southbound Industry-Academia Collaboration Program, both for international intern trainees, have been questioned that these foreign technical trainees have been treated as low-pay foreign laborers and suffering exploitation. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the differences in the history, operation, obstacles and trend between Japan’s Technical Intern Training Program and Taiwan’s Industry-Academia Collaboration Program. The paper employs traditional migration theories and viewpoints of scholars and experts to analyze the migration problems and phenomena.

Madebwe, Crescentia. "Husband immobility and the international migration of married women from Zimbabwe." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/18571.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examined husband immobility and the international migration of married women from Zimbabwe. Data was collected from husbands and wives in married couple households where the wife had migrated alone. Face-to-face semi structured interviews were conducted with migrant women’s husbands in Zimbabwe while migrant women were interviewed in countries of destination telephonically. Empirical results showed that migrant women and their husbands were middle aged. Preferred countries of destination were in the region and the United Kingdom. Having a wife’s own social contacts in the preferred destination encouraged migration by reducing financial and emotional costs. Husbands' immobility facilitated wifely migration. Many wives exercised agency in migration decision making with more wives than husbands having initiated the discussion on migration. There were also cases of joint and wife sole decision making. With a few exceptions decision making was consensual. The women migrated as a survival strategy. In several households remittances were the primary source of income. Husbands were the main recipients of remittances. Some wives gave instructions on how the remittances should be used. Overall, remittances were used for paying fees, buying assets and for household upkeep. Some of the women had not visited their families since their migration. The physical separation of spouses had caused emotional distress in some marital relationships. The majority of respondents cited loss of consortium as a major problem.

Abstract:
In recent years, remittance flows as a part of economic and political competition has become an important issue in politics. Countries intend to increase money inflows by encouraging their citizens who live abroad to transfer their earnings back to their home countries. Today, since the influence of remittances on global economy is perceived to be very critical the remittance flows between countries are closely monitored by important political and economic actors. Sweden and Turkey are the two countries which have developed close relations on migration and remittances over the last fifty years and now Sweden passes through a transition period in terms of evolvement of the public opinion on immigration. This dissertation focuses on the analysis of remittance structure between Sweden and Turkey with a theoretical perspective in order to contribute to evaluation of immigration policies of the political parties in Sweden in light of remittances. The recent general election in Sweden resulted in favor of political parties which support more restricted immigration policies. Eventually, the dissertation aims to contribute with another economic aspect to the comparison on the perspectives of the political parties in Sweden towards immigration. Therefore, the results from the case study is used to verify whether the tendency of the public opinion in Sweden is meaningful. Briefly, in this study, the bilateral remittances between the two countries are examined per se considering views of mainstream theories on remittances and the results are evaluated with the recent political thoughts on immigration in Sweden. The results refers that the negative tendency of public opinion echoed by some political parties in Sweden towards immigration is not economically rational in the sense of remittances.

Kaufman, Andrew. "Canadian homeless mobilities: relational perspectives on At Home/Chez Soi participants’ interurban migrations." 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/31608.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the mobility patterns of 613 participants from the At Home/Chez Soi Research Demonstration Project on Mental Health and Homelessness who were surveyed in five Canadian cities (Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montréal, and Moncton). Participants’ mobility histories are treated as life courses: visualized using a GIS spatiotemporal analysis and complemented by examining their self-described reasons for movement (n=1,750). I contend that homeless mobilities are complex, entangled, and multiple. To better understand these mobilities, I apply relational theoretical perspectives to literature from the mobilities turn. I conceptualize mobility as composed of the relations between various actors. These relations coordinate amidst social differences, histories, and orderings of power. Together, actors and the relations between them, become more than the sum of their parts. To see mobility relationally, is to say that mobilities have emergent properties that reproduce, deepen, or ameliorate marginalization for those experiencing homelessness. I identify a series of actors and their relations composing homeless mobilities via time-space mapping, descriptive statistics, and the exploratory coding of survey data. I conclude by detailing a relational view of homeless mobilities while suggesting that expulsion is one emergent property of this system.

Abstract:
This work is analysing discrimination of ethnic minorities in the Czech labour market between the years 2000 and 2009. Differences in employment rates between immigrants and natives are investigated using the EU LFS data. The empirical part is devoted to the verification of hypotheses and assumptions. By applying both, simple statistical methods and robust regressions, we obtain consistent results confirming the discrimination against foreigners in the labour market. The examination of employment rates of the immigrants by gender shows that men have in most cases better economic position than women. Furthermore, employment of foreigners in relation to the reached level of education is monitored, indicating the discrimination of immigrant workers with college degrees. Interesting is the outcome of the investigation of the change in the data after the breakthrough in 2004, when the Czech Republic along with other Eastern and Central European countries joined the European Union. Although the differences in employment rates of foreigners and natives are mainly obvious till 2004, since 2005 foreigners' employment rates have often increased. After a closer examination, this change can be ascribed rather to changes in the composition of immigrant or in migration trends influenced by the EU accession than...

(in English): This diploma thesis is focused on the Russian-speaking immigrants living in the Czech Republic, specifically on a group of those originating in Ukraine. It deals mainly with their speech behaviour during speeches in the language of the target country of their emigration, i.e., the Czech language, on the background of sociological, cultural and economic aspects. The thesis is divided into three basic chapters. The first chapter provides a brief description of the Russian-speaking emigration with the emphasis on the Ukrainian emigration. The main waves of the Ukrainian emigration from the end of 19th century to the present are described in this chapter. The target group of the study is the Ukrainian emigration after the fall of the communist regime in 1989 which is mainly concerned about the immigration of Czech compatriots and of labour emigration. Basic research strategies and the methodology of the study are described in the second chapter. Mainly qualitative research methods as well as quantitative methods were used in the thesis and the results of the quantitative method serve primarily to ensure the validity of the study during the linguistic analysis of individual respondents.
