This paper presents a decision support methodology aimed at assisting Water Distribution System (WDS) operators in the timely location of pipe bursts. This will enable them to react more systematically and promptly. The information gathered from various data sources to help locate where a pipe burst might have occurred is frequently conflicting and imperfect. The methodology developed in this paper deals effectively with such information sources. It indicates that the anisotropy of thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of the argillite

Abstract Adaptive management is currently an important method to optimize the management of complex water resources systems. Regional water resources adaptive management was conducted based on the advanced theory of a complex system multi-agent model; the state of an agent was tracked and modified by information entropy theory, which was improved by using individual standard deviations. With the goal of optimizing the adaptation of each agent of the region, water resources in the major grain production area of China were managed under the constraints of the total annual available water resourc

We focus on the finite-time control of a hydro-turbine governing system (HGS) in this paper. First, the nonlinear mathematical model of the hydro-turbine governing system is presented and is consistent with the actual project. Then, based on the finite-time stability theory and terminal sliding mode scheme, a new finite-time terminal sliding mode controller is designed for the hydro-turbine governing system and a detailed mathematical derivation is given. Only three vector controllers are required, which is less than the HGS equation dimensions and is easy to implement accordingly. Furthermore

The new mechanical elastic wheel has the following advantages: non-pneumatic, anti-puncture, and explosion-proof. However, the larger radial stiffness is detrimental to vehicle ride comfort. To solve this problem, an integrated design method of hydro-pneumatic suspension matching mechanical elastic wheel is proposed in this paper. First, the nonlinear radial stiffness of mechanical elastic wheel is fitted by static loading experiment. Next, the mathematical model of hydro-pneumatic suspension is derived. Then, a half-car model, integrating hydro-pneumatic suspension and mechanical elastic whee

This paper presents an application of optimal control theory in multi sources power system by considering natural choice of power plants participating in automatic generation control (AGC) scheme. However, for successful operation of large power system, the natural choices of generation suitable for AGC system are hydro and thermal power plants since gas and nuclear power plants are rarely participates in the AGC scheme. Therefore, this work presents design and implementation of proportional integral (PI) structured optimal AGC controller in the presence of hydro and thermal power plants by us

In the absence of a transboundary water agreement between riparian states of Harirud River Basin, downstream states—Iran and Turkmenistan—have adopted a resource-capturing policy through the construction of Doosti Dam in the lower Harirud River Basin when the upstream state—Afghanistan—was engaged in social unrest during 1980s to the early 2000s. While Doosti Dam has a high potential of supplying water for major cities in Turkmenistan and Iran, its flow has declined due to climate changes and drought in the basin. Abstract:
A new hydro-mechanical model for unsaturated geotechnical materials based on the non-equilibrium thermodynamic theory is presented in this paper. Common concepts, such as yield criterion and flow rules, are not involved in the constitutive relationships, and are replaced with the thermodynamic concepts of granular temperature, granular entropy, migration coefficients, and energy functions. The dissipation system and the migration coefficient relationships are theoretically determined, and the constitutive relations of non-elastic deformation and granular temperature are obtained by dissipation

Abstract Increasing renewable energy usage puts extra pressure on decision-making in river hydropower systems. Decision support tools are used for near-future forecasting of the water available. Model-driven forecasting used for river state estimation often provides bad results due to numerous uncertainties. False inflows and poor initialization are some of the uncertainty sources. To overcome this, standard data assimilation (DA) techniques (e.g., ensemble Kalman filter) are used, which are not always applicable in real systems. This paper presents further insight into the novel, tailor-made
