Abstract:
The conceptual framework for the Physicianship Curriculum is described in this chapter. The crucial participants are depicted in an “educational triangle,” a diagrammatic representation illustrating the roles and functional relationships of these participants. The chapter introduces the concept of the attending teacher, who is at once a clinician, teacher, and role model. We draw an explicit parallel between clinical care and medical education; it leads us to consider student-centered education as the pedagogical analogue to person-centered care. The text addresses the nature of medical judgment and the significant feature of uncertainty that is part of the experiences of all the relevant actors. The second half of the chapter explicates the constructs of epistēme, techné, and phronēsis, originating from Aristotle, whose framework underpins the philosophic armature of the Physicianship Curriculum.

Abstract:
This chapter continues to consider some foundational semantic issues important for the author’s theory, and for conceptual engineering in general. It argues that conceptual engineering is not—despite the nomenclature—concerned with concepts, but rather with the intensions and extensions of words. It introduces externalism about meaning, which is a key component of the Austerity Framework, and draws connections between meaning change and externalist discussions of reference shift. It responds to the objection that externalism makes changing meaning either impossible or extremely difficult by denying the first—it’s built into externalism that meaning change is possible—and frankly accepting the latter. It then argues that not only semantic values but also metasemantics can change over time, draws out some consequences, and discusses expressions that do not have intensions or extensions.

Abstract:
In this chapter we take a step back and consider what we’ve seen so far and talk a bit about the methodology which will inform the remainder of the book. In particular, it argues that it’s a worthwhile enterprise to present a theory of conceptual engineering in general, one that is applicable to all the diverse instances of it we saw in Chapter 2. It does so by presenting five very general questions about conceptual engineering which are worth answering. It then goes on to present a preliminary sketch of a framework for understanding conceptual engineering, which is called the Austerity Framework.

Abstract:
While the previous chapters are concerned with elaboration and exposition of the Choice and Equality pillars, this chapter is more concerned with implementation. Thus, it delineates CEF’s distinctiveness from other choice-of-law accounts and traces its conceptual independence from such notions as the corrective justice theory of private law and the notion of international human rights. Taking the provisions of the American Second Restatement as an example, this chapter analyzes them from the standpoint of CEF. Ultimately, in its last section, the chapter makes some observations about CEF’s suitability to provide a normative framework to meet the challenges of the digital age and the Internet.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the ambivalent relation between individual liberty and insecurity in the conceptual framework of criminal law. It does so primarily through a critical examination of the political theory of Thomas Hobbes, using it as a lens through which to analyse problems in contemporary criminal law. The chapter argues that the way in which individual autonomy and liberty are conceptualized in modern and liberal thought implies that civil society is intrinsically vulnerable to individual self-interest, so that security ends up taking priority over liberty in the legal and political constitution of liberal societies. The chapter also explores the extent to which the social role and justification of the criminal law rely on this vulnerability.

Zürn, Michael. A Theory of Global Governance. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198819974.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book offers a major new theory of global governance, explaining both its rise and what many see as its current crisis. The author suggests that world politics is now embedded in a normative and institutional structure dominated by hierarchies and power inequalities and therefore inherently creates contestation, resistance, and distributional struggles. Within an ambitious and systematic new conceptual framework, the theory makes four key contributions. First, it reconstructs global governance as a political system which builds on normative principles and reflexive authorities. Second, it identifies the central legitimation problems of the global governance system with a constitutionalist setting in mind. Third, it explains the rise of state and societal contestation by identifying key endogenous dynamics and probing the causal mechanisms that produced them. Finally, it identifies the conditions under which struggles in the global governance system lead to decline or deepening. Rich with propositions, insights, and evidence, the book promises to be the most important and comprehensive theoretical argument about world politics of the twenty-first century.

Abstract:
Monoidal category theory serves as a powerful framework for describing logical aspects of quantum theory, giving an abstract language for parallel and sequential composition and a conceptual way to understand many high-level quantum phenomena. Here, we lay the foundations for this categorical quantum mechanics, with an emphasis on the graphical calculus that makes computation intuitive. We describe superposition and entanglement using biproducts and dual objects, and show how quantum teleportation can be studied abstractly using these structures. We investigate monoids, Frobenius structures and Hopf algebras, showing how they can be used to model classical information and complementary observables. We describe the CP construction, a categorical tool to describe probabilistic quantum systems. The last chapter introduces higher categories, surface diagrams and 2-Hilbert spaces, and shows how the language of duality in monoidal 2-categories can be used to reason about quantum protocols, including quantum teleportation and dense coding. Previous knowledge of linear algebra, quantum information or category theory would give an ideal background for studying this text, but it is not assumed, with essential background material given in a self-contained introductory chapter. Throughout the text, we point out links with many other areas, such as representation theory, topology, quantum algebra, knot theory and probability theory, and present nonstandard models including sets and relations. All results are stated rigorously and full proofs are given as far as possible, making this book an invaluable reference for modern techniques in quantum logic, with much of the material not available in any other textbook.

Abstract:
This book focuses on quantum field theory and its application to gravitational physics, in both semiclassical and full quantum frameworks, with special attention paid to renormalization, gauge theories and, especially, effective action formalism. Part I provides both conceptual and technical introductions to quantum field theory, starting from elements of group theory, through classical fields, up to effective action formalism in general gauge theories. Compared to other books on this topic, this book describes the general formalism of renormalization in more detail and pays more attention to gauge theories. Part II discusses basic aspects of quantum field theory in curved spacetime and perturbative quantum gravity. More than half of this part is written with a full exposition of details, including well-explained examples with simple calculations. All chapters include exercises, which range from very simple ones to those requiring small original investigations. The material in the second part was selected on the basis of the “must-know” principle: while detailed expositions are provided for relatively simple techniques and calculations, it is expected that the interested reader will be able to learn more advanced issues independently after learning the basic material and working through the exercises provided. In some cases, when more complicated subjects were discussed, the book only provides references for the original publications, where the reader can find the full details of the calculations used.
