Abstract:
This article is a review of the concept of whiteness and how the power and privilege of whiteness is reproduced within societies such as Australia and South Africa. As well as providing a broad overview of whiteness, our aim is to highlight and establish dialogue about how research on whiteness may contribute to decolonisation and work towards social justice. The review begins by outlining the meanings and complexity of whiteness. Having established some parameters for understanding whiteness, the second part of the article focuses on how whiteness reproduces itself. Three different, but related, practices or mechanisms through which whiteness is reproduced have been identified in the literature. These are knowledge and history construction, national identity and belonging, and anti-racism practice. In conclusion, we briefly discuss how we are investigating whiteness further in relation to pedagogy and applied research. While this article is not aimed at providing a complete review of whiteness, it does provide a background against which we can start thinking differently about racism, race relations, and anti-racism. These different ways of thinking include interrogating power and privilege in the analysis of racism, which in turn may lead to more effective and critical action addressing racism.

Abstract:
In this paper, simplified theory of electrophoresis is presented. The effect of certain actors on course of electrophoresis. Presented theoretical elements enable easier work and obtaining of more reliable data. Based on medium used, voltage, direction and dimensions categorization of electrophoresis is presented. Also, possibilities for use of electrophoresis in livestock production, medicine, veterinary science and pharmacy are also presented in the paper. It is stressed that by application of electrophoresis genetic variants related to certain production trait can be determined, which enables better selection in livestock production. Also, by application of this method in investigation of biological material we can find out more about physiological and metabolical processes related to main functions of the organism, nutrition, health condition and genetics.

It is important to continually carve out ways to connect with persons in practice and ensure that polices and processes directing practice are aligned with the values and beliefs of nurses and those they serve. In this paper, patient engagement is discussed in light of nursing theoretical principles and concepts, specifically Parse’s (2014) humanbecoming paradigm. In addition, policy connections will be outlined to show how nurses may participate in patient engagement in unique ways.

Abstract:
Abstract Pioneered by feminist ethicist and psychologist Carol Gilligan in her 1982 work In a Different Voice, care theory rests, according to philosopher Rita Manning, on four key elements: Moral Attention, Sympathetic Understanding, Relationship Awareness, and Harmony. Combined with the notion of voice present in Gilligan’s title, each of these components represents a key portion of the translator-text-author relationship, particularly when translation is seen as negotiation. In this contribution, after examining the notion of translation as negotiation as Eco describes it, I will offer an overview of the psycho-sociological theory of care, with the aim of presenting it as a framework for ethical decision-making in negotiating the act of translation. The importance of translaboration will become evident through the theories of Ricoeur and an emphasis on the cooperative nature of ethically negotiated decisions; i.e., ‘trans’ and its insistence on moving across, beyond, through; and ‘laboration’ and its insistence on the continuing and ongoing process of working.

This manuscript explores Howard’s concept of paradexity: a convergence of paradox and complexity. Emerging paradigms of paradexity are explored including the emotional economy, sense making, time expansion, and communities of interest. Parse’s theory of humanbecoming is presented as a theoretical basis to guide nursing in transcending the challenges of paradexity and cocreating a futuristic role for nursing.

Abstract:
María, a self-sufficient Mexican Christian woman, understands her life in terms of her relationship with God. Giving María voice as directly as possible, locating her within her cultural context of contemporary Mexico, and considering her conceptualization of God through the lens of critical theory, crevices are revealed where the light of transcendence shines through. This permits, however briefly, possibilities for reconciliation and resistance to the kinds of kyriarchal domination that are reflected in María’s particular story.

Full text
Abstract:
While the idea of democracy has never been more universal or more popular, both democratic theory and the empirical study of democratic possibilities are in some disarray. We seek a productive reconnection of these two endeavors with democratic discourse through close attention to the language of democracy as used by ordinary people and political actors. Reconstructive inquiry determines how the individuals who are the potential constituents of any democratic order themselves conceptualize democracy and their own political roles and competences. We deploy an intensive method—Q methodology—for the study of individual characteristics, capabilities, and dispositions in combination with political discourse analysis. Four discourses are discovered in an analysis of selected U.S. subjects: contented republicanism, deferential conservatism, disaffected populism, and private liberalism. These results can be used to relate democratic theory to live possibilities in democratic discourse.

Abstract:
Baratgin and colleagues have questioned certain aspects of the mental models theory related to disjunction. It is truth that, from this last theory, the paper authored by Baratgin et al. (2015) has already been responded. However, I try to further develop that response here by insisting in two important points of the theory: the role that modulation plays in it and the clear differences between its framework and standard logic. In this way, my main aim is to support to a larger extent, by means of theoretical arguments based on its general approach, the idea that the objections presented in the mentioned paper do not really impact the mental models theory.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The author considers what postcolonial theory has to contribute to the sociology of race. Although there are overlaps, postcolonial theory and the sociology of race are not reducible to each other. Postcolonial theory emphasizes the global, historical, and therefore colonial dimensions of race relations, including how imperialism has generated racial thought and racial stratification. A postcolonial sociology of race, therefore, would (1) analytically recover empire and colonialism and their legacies, (2) excavate colonial racialization and trace its continuities into the present, (3) reveal the reciprocal constitution of racialized identities that began under empire, and (4) critique the imperial standpoint and seek out the subjugated epistemologies of racialized subjects. Although such a postcolonial sociology of race is a project that has yet to be fully realized, there are a number of existing sociological works that begin the journey and point us in the right direction.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper is concerned with developing the current critical engagement in the social sciences with the structurationist writings of Anthony Giddens. Of particular concern here is the hitherto relatively neglected question of the relationship between structuration theory and empirical research projects. For reasons to do with (1) Giddens's arguments about the overall purpose of social theory, (2) the importance of the theory–empirical research question generally in social science, (3) the need to expand Giddens's audience, and (4) the necessity of assessing the degree to which structuration theory helps in the understanding of the social life, this issue is considered to be of the first importance. Several key questions of direct relevance to this concern are explored, notably, Giddens's comments on this score; the relationship of these comments to wider debate on the connections between theoretical and empirical work; and the possibility of locating structuration theory within the concept of hierarchies of abstraction.

This article attempts to explore the possibilities of grounding human rights theoretically. It examines arguments that such an attempt is futile because the concept itself is flawed, arguments that the concept is a valid one and only becomes flawed when it is overextended in scope, and presents my own “holistic” argument that some of the arguments for constraining the scope do not hold up under deeper scrutiny.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper argues against dismissing the Principle of Alternative Possibilities merely on the ground of so-called Frankfurt-style cases. Its main claims are that the interpretation of such cases depends on which substantive theory of responsibility one endorses and that Frankfurt-style cases all involve some form of causal overdetermination which can be interpreted either as being compatible with the potentially manipulated agent’s ability to act otherwise or as a responsibility undermining constraint. The paper also argues that the possibility of such scenarios can support the truth of classical compatibilism as much as the truth of semicompatibilism.

Abstract:
Digital capitalism is guided by the organising principles of digital automation, information processing, and communication. It rests on the consolidation of relations of exploitation of digital labour based on flexibility and generating precarity. It makes profit from user data under conditions of surveillance. What would an alternative paradigm look like? This paper aims to sketch a possible socialist society resting on digital technology but organised on a different logic, namely that of autonomous production, leisure, and social engagement. It draws on relevant theories of the Left, evaluates them against the reality of digital capitalism, and suggests structural and user practice alternatives that can pave the way towards a digital/communicative socialism. This paper engages with the works of Czech philosopher Radovan Richta (1924-1983) and Austrian-French philosopher André Gorz (1923-2007). It shows that their ideas on the scientific and technological revolution and post-industrial socialism are highly relevant for the analysis and discussion of digital/communicative socialism.
