Abstract:
In random matrix theory it is known that the probability measure describing the spectral distribution of certain normal random matrices in the scaling limit tends to the equilibrium measure of an equilibrium problem in weighted potential theory. Motivated by this relation we compare the equilibrium measure of a sample Gaussian background potential perturbed by a point mass with a partial balayage operation of the point mass to a specific set, and get an indication of a general relation between the equilibrium problem of certain background potentials and a specific partial balayage operation. We develop this relation in detail and further discuss the possibility of an even more general method of obtaining the weighted equilibrium measure of a background potential directly through a certain partial balayage operation.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of three papers, all treating various aspects of the operation partial balayage from potential theory. The first paper concerns the equilibrium measure in the setting of two dimensional weighted potential theory, an important measure arising in various mathematical areas, e.g. random matrix theory and the theory of orthogonal polynomials. In this paper we show that the equilibrium measure satisfies a complementary relation with a partial balayage measure if the weight function is of a certain type. The second paper treats the connection between partial balayage measures and measures arising from scaling limits of a generalisation of the so-called divisible sandpile model on lattices. The standard divisible sandpile can, in a natural way, be considered a discrete version of the partial balayage operation with respect to the Lebesgue measure. The generalisation that is developed in this paper is essentially a discrete version of the partial balayage operation with respect to more general measures than the Lebesgue measure. In the third paper we develop a version of partial balayage on Riemannian manifolds, using the theory of currents. Several known properties of partial balayage measures are shown to have corresponding results in the Riemannian manifold setting, one of which being the main result of the first paper. Moreover, we utilize the developed framework to show that for manifolds of dimension two, harmonic and geodesic balls are locally equivalent if and only if the manifold locally has constant curvature.

We provide geometric inequalities on $R^n$ and on general manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature by employing suitable monotone quantities along the flow of capacitary and $p$-capacitary potentials, as well as through related boundary value problems. Among the main achievements, we cite [(i)] a Willmore-type inequality on manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature leading in turn to the sharp Isoperimetric Inequality on $3$-manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature ; [(ii)] enhanced Kasue/Croke-Kleiner splitting theorems ; [(iii)] a generalised Minkowski-type inequality in $R^n$ holding with no assumptions on the boundary of the domain considered except for smoothness ; [(iv)] a complete discussion of maximal volume solutions to the least area problem with obstacle on Riemannian manifolds and its relation with the variational $p$-capacity.

Abstract:
Efficient modelling and accurate knowledge of the mechanical behaviour of the reactorcore are needed to estimate the effects of seismic excitation on a nuclear power plant. Thepresence of cooling water flow (in PWRs) gives rise to fluid structure interaction phenomena.Modelling of fluid structure interactions on fuel assemblies is thus of fundamentalimportance in order to assure the safety of nuclear reactors. The main objective of thePhD project which is presented in this document is to investigate fluid structure interactionsin order to have a better understanding of the involved phenomena. Both modellingand experimental approach are considered. A new simplified linear model for fluid structureinteractions is developed by using the potential flow theory for fluid force modellingwhile the Euler-Bernoulli beam model is used for the structural part. The model, is firstdeveloped for a single cylinder and it is validated with reference works in literature. Theeffects of the confinement size and of the wavenumber are investigated. The potential flowmodel developed for a single cylinder, is thus extended to a multi cylinders geometry. Theexperimental approach is thus needed in order to validate the developed model. A newexperimental facility, ICARE, is designed in order to investigate fluid structure interactionphenomena on half scale fuel assemblies. In this document, the results provided bydisplacement and LDV measurements are widely analysed. The dynamical behaviour ofthe fuel assembly and coupling effects are investigated. Calculations are compared to theexperimental results in order to validate the model and to analyse its limits. The model isin agreement with experimental results regarding the added mass effect. In addition, themodel qualitatively predicts couplings effects on different directions. As a drawback, thepotential flow model cannot predict added damping effects, which are mainly due to viscousforces. Finally in this document another application of the developed model is described. The model is used in order to simulate experiments performed on a surrogate fuel assemblyin the experimental facility installed at George Washington University (GWU). The modelis able to predict and to provide a valid interpretation for the water flow perturbation dueto the motion of the excited assembly. The thesis concludes with perspectives for furtherimprovements of the model, by integrating viscous terms in the equations. Work needs tobe carried out on the analysis of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) data collected duringICARE experimental campaigns

Abstract:
Environmental management accounting (EMA) is attracting increased recognition as a management tool that assists in improving financial and environmental performance through enhanced environmental accountability. Various industries have been included in EMA-related research and study, but universities have typically failed to be the focus of the attention. This research studied the experiences of key managers from five universities to explore potential factors influencing the decision to adopt, or not to adopt, EMA within the higher education sector. For the purpose of this study, EMA is defined as the generation, analysis, and use of monetary (or financial) and physical (or non-financial) environment-related information in order to improve organisational financial and environmental performance. The two objectives of this study were to understand current accounting practices for managing major environmental costs, and to identify factors influencing EMA adoption within universities. For the purpose of this study, the major environmental costs referred to are limited to the costs pertaining to the consumption of electricity, water and paper, and the generation of wastes. A case study methodology was followed using semi-structured interviews of key personnel with four different management functions (i.e. environmental management, management accounting, senior management, and heads of academic schools) within each university, and performing content analysis on the transcribed interview data. Specifically for achieving the second research objective, a theoretical framework that considers four theories was embraced to guide the data collection and focus the study. The four theories are contingency theory, institutional theory, legitimacy theory, and stakeholder theory. The findings of the first research objective revealed that there was a general lack of EMA utilisation within the case universities. This was in part due to a perceived lack of appreciation by key personnel of the extent of environmental costs being incurred, but arguably mainly because of the absence of relevant environmental cost information being brought to the attention of senior management. Although environmental sustainability was promoted as important from an environmental management perspective, efforts to improve internal environmental accountability, in particular from an accounting perspective, were still absent. In relation to the second research objective, it was found that five key barriers contributed to this lack of EMA utilisation within the five case universities, and they were attitudinal, financial, informational, institutional, and management barriers. Among the factors that provide further explanations about how each barrier influences EMA adoption, resistance to change, resource constraints, (a lack of) legitimacy considerations, and a lack of environmental responsibility & accountability were found to be strong factors, as they were supported in all of the five cases. Apart from the theoretical extension to this area of research, the results and findings of this study supported the uses and applications of EMA by the higher education sector. Much more can, and should, be done by universities in relation to how they account for the environment. This can provide benefits not only for the sector itself, but also for the environment in which we live.

Abstract:
In this thesis we study some fine properties of sets in the boundary of continuous and discrete metric spaces. On the discrete side, we consider a Potential Theory on infinite trees. Using probabilistic methods, we derive a description of the set of irregular points for the Dirichlet problem on the tree. In particular, we obtain a Wiener's type test and we show that the set of irregular points has zero capacity. We also discuss some uniqueness results for the solution of the Dirichlet problem in some energy spaces. Then, we provide an equilibrium equation characterizing measures that realize a p–capacity on the natural boundary of the tree and we discuss a quite surprising application to the classical problem of tiling a rectangle with squares. In the continuous setting, we study metric distortion properties of sets in unit circle under the action of inner functions. Classical results by Löowner and by Fernández-Pestana describe this distortion in terms of Lebesgue measure and Hausdorff content respectively, for inner functions having the Denjoy-Wolff point in the unit disc. We present an extended theorem of the same kind which applies also to inner functions with no fixed points in the unit disc. In this situation, the distortion properties are given in terms of a natural (infinite) measure which provides at the same time information on the size and on the distribution of a set around the Denjoy-Wolff point. As an application of our result we derive an estimate of the size of the omitted values of an inner functions in terms of the size of points in the unit circle not admitting a finite angular derivative. Using our result we are also able to prove a version of Löwner and Fernández-Pestana theorems for inner functions of the upper half plane fixing the point at infinity.

Abstract:

In this thesis, which consists of five papers (A,B,C,D,E), we are interested in questions related to quadrature domains. Among the problems studied are the possibility of changing the type of measure in a quadrature identity (from complex to real and from real signed to positive), properties of partial balayage, which in a sense can be used to generate quadrature domains, and mother bodies which are closely related to inversion of partial balayage.

These three questions are discussed in papers A,D respectively B.

The first of these questions (when trying to go from real signed to positive measures) leads to the study of approximation in the cone of positive harmonic functions. These questions are closely related to properties of the harmonic measure on the Martin boundary, and this relationship leads to the study of harmonic measures on ideal boundaries in paper E. Some other approaches to the same problem also lead to some extent to the study of properties of classical balayage in paper C.

Abstract:
Theory of mind (ToM) is the knowledge that other people have minds, thoughts, beliefs and values different from our own. Patients with schizophrenia are generally thought to be impaired at tasks requiring this ability. Frith (1992) has proposed that specific signs and symptoms of schizophrenia are associated with dysfunction in ToM ability. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role of thought disorder in theory of mind and to tease out the electrophysiological correlates of this phenomenon. Participants partook in an intention attribution task, during which event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded. Patients with high ratings of thought disorder performed worse than those with low thought disorder and significantly worse than normal subjects. ERP results were unexpected as no differences were detected for ERPs on frontal sites. A significant difference in the P600 component was observed on Pz. Possible explanations for parietal activation are discussed.

Abstract:
In this thesis we are interested in some problems regarding harmonic functions. The topics are divided into three chapters. Chapter 2 concerns singularities developed by solutions of the Cauchy problem for a holomorphic elliptic equation, especially Laplace's equation. The principal motivation is to locate the singularities of the Schwarz potential. The results have direct applications to Laplacian growth (or the Hele-Shaw problem). Chapter 3 concerns the Dirichlet problem when the boundary is an algebraic set and the data is a polynomial or a real-analytic function. We pursue some questions related to the Khavinson-Shapiro conjecture. A main topic of interest is analytic continuability of the solution outside its natural domain. Chapter 4 concerns certain complex-valued harmonic functions and their zeros. The special cases we consider apply directly in astrophysics to the study of multiple-image gravitational lenses.

Moobela, Cletus. "Exploring the potential of complexity theory in urban regeneration processes." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2004. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20078/.

Full text
Abstract:
The research project was conceived out of a desire to explore the potential application of complexity theory in understanding urban regeneration processes. The science is still in its infancy, having been born out of a general milieu of, and paralleled, the dissatisfaction with the classical science approach to the problems of the world. At the heart of the complexity project is, therefore, the defiance of the reductionist paradigm in favour of holism and emphasis on emergent properties in the understanding of complex systems. As a new way of thinking and one that boasts of its ability to cut across disciplinary boundaries, the emerging science has found its maiden expression in many spheres of the social and physical inquiry - offering, in each case, potential solutions to the vexing problems and questions that have survived the test of time. In urban studies, such questions reside within the general thesis of the persistence of the urban problem in the midst of a myriad of theoretical tools and policies designed to secure a better understanding and tackle the problem. The translation of this promising theoretical platform into the study and the pursuit of the research agenda were conducted through the case study of the Hulme inner city area in Manchester. The task basically involved three phases of analysis. The first was a historical narrative that attempted to weigh the evolution of the Hulme regeneration processes between 1960 and 1990 against the characteristic features of complex systems, with the aim of establishing a case for conceptualisation of urban regeneration as a subject of complexity. Using selected analytical tools of social network analysis, the second phase sought to quantify the regeneration networks of Hulme so as to weigh them against the deprivation indices for the area between 1990 and 2000, with the aim of testing for any correlations and their implications in the complexity project. Though equally facilitated by social network analysis, the third level was more concerned about investigating the enabling environment for the evolution of urban regeneration networks than mere quantification of the network parameters. Put together, the three levels of analysis provided a framework that serves as a fundamental analytical framework for urban regeneration processes. It offers a much more robust, emergent based, holistic approach to urban regeneration than that which iscontained in many of the contemporary claims of holism. The study's emphasis on intervention without violation of natural (social) order does not only provide a (potentially) essential tool for analysis but also sheds light on questions of the appropriate institutional thickness that is desirable for innovation. Being an exploratory undertaking, the study does not purport to be an exhaustive account of the issues raised, especially that complexity theory is itself still an emerging phenomenon.

Abstract:

This qualitative study explored the Identification stage of transorganization development concerning the issue of supporting disadvantaged Richmond youth in the San Francisco Bay Area. Seven participants from four youth-serving organizations in Richmond were recruited using convenience and snowball sampling strategies. Participants were interviewed about the challenges disadvantaged Richmond youth currently face; which organizations may form the membership of a transorganizational system focused on supporting disadvantaged Richmond youth; and what these member organizations’ goals, motivations, values, current activities, and outcomes are. Richmond youth were found to face a multifaceted set of challenges affecting all aspects of their lives. A range of nonprofits, for-profits, and public sector organizations were identified as currently operating in the space. The leading goal for their organizations is to help youth to better themselves, and to do so, they deliver a range of services that achieve the aims of awareness building, mental and emotional support, recreation outings and activities, and academic support.

Abstract:
Test selection in psychological assessment is guided, both explicitly and implicitly, by how informative tests are with regard to a trait of interest. Most existing formulations of test information are sensitive to subpopulation variation, with the result that test information will vary from sample to sample. Recently, measures of test information have been developed that quantify the potential informativeness of the test. These indices are defined by the properties of the test, as distinct from the properties of the sample or examinee. As of yet, however, measures of potential information have been developed only for unidimensional tests. In practice, psychological tests are often multidimensional. Furthermore, multidimensional tests are often used to estimate one specific trait among many. This study develops measures of potential test information for multidimensional tests, as well as measures of marginal potential test information---test information with regard to one trait within a multidimensional test. In Study 1, the performance of the metrics was tested in data simulated from unidimensional, first-order multidimensional, second-order, and bifactor models. In Study 2, measures of marginal and multidimensional potential test information are applied to a set of neuropsychological data collected as part of Rush University's Memory and Aging Project. In simulated data, marginal and multidimensional potential test information were sensitive to the changing dimensionality of the test. In observed neuropsychological data, five traits were identified. Verbal abilities were most closely correlated with probable dementia. Both indices of marginal potential test information identify the Mini Mental Status Exam as the best measure of that trait. More broadly, greater marginal potential test information calculated with regard to verbal abilities was associated with greater criterion validity. These measures allow for the direct comparison of two multidimensional tests that assess the same trait, facilitating test selection and improving the precision and validity of psychological assessment.

Johannes, Arnold Marius. "My living theory of the transformational potential of my educational leadership." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/4079.

Full text
Abstract:
In democratic South Africa, policies place much emphasis on the need for transformational leadership. This challenges school leaders to ensure that their practice is in line with the democratic and inclusive values espoused therein. This thesis is an account of my journey of learning about educational leadership and how I attempted to influence transformation at my own school. The development of my living theory of educational management is grounded in my desire to make a positive change to the quality of teaching and learning at my school, by embodying and exemplifying such values in my leadership. My learning as an educational leader comprises my living theory on improving my educational leadership within a socially challenged context. I explain the context and problems experienced at my school and provide evidence of the need to move from the hierarchic, autocratic form of leadership, still prevailing at many South African schools. I adopted the theoretical framework of servant leadership to enable me to develop a more contextually sensitive and visionary style of leadership through critical reflection on my own practice. My stimulus for this journey of learning stemmed from the perceived contradiction between my espoused beliefs about leadership and my actual practice. My own autocratic leadership style was one of the main barriers that prevented teachers from attaining autonomy and taking on leadership roles within the school. My leadership style was more in alignment with the values of accountability, discipline and efficiency than those of care, trust and the development of the potential of others. This interrogation of my ontological values informed my subsequent interventions to improve my practice. Following an action research design, I investigated the quality of my leadership to determine which areas I needed to improve, took action to improve these and evaluated the change against the values inherent in the notion of servant-leadership. I embarked on a journey that helped me to shift my practice from being based on previously held authoritarian professional values towards values that underpin a more transformational leadership, such as care and trust. My journey of learning was guided by the tenets of self-study action research, which required critical self-reflection and holding myself accountable for my own actions The practical knowledge I gained through this self-reflection on my practice enabled me to make professional judgements, which then became conceptual knowledge in the form of a living theory generated by my research. This was made possible through a continuous process of data generation to extract evidence to test the validity of the claims to knowledge I made. Multiple sources of data (written, graphic and multimedia) were used to better understand the scope of happenings throughout the research and to monitor my practice over time. I explain how I used my improved understanding of leadership to promote collegiality for building quality relationships to promote teacher leadership for school improvement and how I subjected these claims to social and personal validation procedures. The significance of this study is that it contributes to new forms of practice and theory in terms of showing how a values-based approach to school leadership can influence positive change in teacher practice. While this study is a narrative of my practice, it is also a narrative of theorising about how my colleagues and I have come to know and how our thinking has changed about our work and ourselves. Although I had to indicate a cut-off point in this action research enquiry, the knowledge gained will continue to develop and influence my practice in the future and hopefully will be judged as useful by others in positions of leadership. The thesis is thus an original contribution to educational knowledge in the field of self-study action research. It demonstrates how sociohistorical and sociocultural insights from Apartheid to Post-Apartheid South Africa can be integrated within a living theory of transformational leadership.

Morgan, David C. "A Gaussian approximation to the effective potential." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26500.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates some of the properties of a variational approximation to scalar field theories: a trial wavefunctional which has a gaussian form is used as a ground state ansatz for an interacting scalar field theory - the expectation value of the Hamiltonian in this state is then minimized. This we call the Gaussian Approximation; the resulting effective potential we follow others by calling the Gaussian Effective Potential (GEP). An equivalent but more general finite temperature formalism is then reviewed and used for the calculations of the GEP in this thesis. Two scalar field theories are described: ϕ⁴ theory in four dimensions (ϕ⁴₄) and ϕ⁶ theory in three dimensions (ϕ⁶₃). After showing what the Gaussian Approximation does in terms of Feynman diagrams, renormalized GEP's are calculated for both theories. Dimensional Regularization is used in the renormalization and this this is especially convenient for the GEP in ϕ⁶₃ theory because it becomes trivially renor-malizable. It is noted that ϕ⁶₃ loses its infrared asymptotic freedom in the Gaussian Approximation. Finally, it is shown how a finite temperature GEP can be calculated by finding low and high temperature expansions of the temperature terms in ϕ⁶₃ theory.

A more conservative supreme court will likely have the chance to overrule Roe v. Wade. Many states have passed heartbeat laws that will probably be taken all the way to the supreme court, these cases will ask the supreme court to affirm fetal personhood, giving fetuses a constitutionally recognized right to due process and making abortion illegal. In this thesis, I will defend an expansion of protections for pregnant peoples through a socialized right to abortion.

Abstract:
We prove spectral localization for infinite metric graphs with a self-adjoint Laplace operator and a random potential. Therefor we adapt the multiscale analysis (MSA) from the euclidean case to metric graphs. In the MSA a covering of the graph is needed which is obtained from a uniform polynomial growth of the graph. The geometric restrictions of the graph contain a uniform bound on the edge lengths. As boundary conditions we allow all settings which give a lower bounded self-adjoint operator with an associated quadratic form. The result is spectral localization (i.e. pure point spectrum) with polynomially decaying eigenfunctions in a small interval at the ground state energy

Emragea, Mageda Rizig. "An exploration of tourism development theory and potential educational responses in Eastern Libya." Thesis, University of Derby, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10545/215209.

Full text
Abstract:
Tourism in many developing countries has experienced rapid growth over the past three decades. This exponential growth fostered a plethora of methods and lessons learned from others' experiences that have gone through similar paths of tourism development. The identification of obstacles that relate to socio-economic, cultural and environmental impacts has been challenged, and have been challenging. It seems from these case debates that tourism education is an essential tool in rural development, especially when it is intended to introduce tourism to rural areas and simultaneously to ensure sustainable rural tourism as an essential component of the national economy. The significance of this study is that it provides a case study of identification, evaluation and potential implementation of the relationships between development theory and educational responses. The context is provided from research carried out into rural tourism development in Eastern Libya, and how the institutions of tourism education can contribute towards preparing tourism employees with the skills required, and knowledge of the various aspects of rural tourism. However, research on rural tourism in developing countries in general, and in Libya in particular, is characterized by the lack of literature and insufficient data, and even when the data is available; it is often unreliable, fragmented and misleading. The aim of the study was to improve and develop the quality and services of rural tourism in Eastern Libya in order for it to become a sustainable and attractive destination. This was achieved by investigating the major obstacles to the development of rural tourism, and by providing appropriate alternatives to the current status quo and projected pathways for development. This was predicated upon close cooperation between the higher institutions of tourism and tourism sector based locally in Eastern Libya. The cooperation and communication between these sectors was not found to be mirrored when viewing the sector nationally and internationally. The thesis combines the findings from descriptive, analytical and inferential critical analysis, within an informative historical background on tourism in general and rural Libyan tourism in particular. The target area for this study was Eastern Libya; however, the findings and policies are proposed to be adapted for other rural regions in Libya with special consideration to the geographical variations among these regions. The success of the study was based upon the understanding of the cultural dimension from a Libyan national's perspective as this meant the process was achievable. It was important to get an unbiased local impression of the potential impacts of change in order to factor this into the development process. The findings of this study indicate that the institutions of tourism education can contribute towards preparing tourism employees with the necessary skills and techniques, knowledge and competencies to reduce the gap between what is taught and what should be taught in the tourism institutes, However, in order to achieve this some of the deficiencies of the present training programmes need to be further investigated and solutions identified. In addition co-operation between tourism higher institutions and other tourism sectors nationally and internationally need be increased if tourism education is to flourish and initial and in-service training of tourism employees to be improved

Van, Zyl Ann Elizabeth. "Exploring the potential theory-practice gap in the teaching methods of nurse educators." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/86609.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The lack of theory-practice integration has a long-standing history in nursing education due to many factors and causes. It is continuously indicated in research studies that there is no easy or perfect solution. The causes for this theory-practice gap seem to be in the theoretical and/or clinical environment. In literature teaching methods are identified as one of the most important causes of the theory-practice gap. In view of the informal feedback received from nurse educators and nursing managers it was necessary to investigate the lack of theory-practice integration. The aim of the study was thus to explore in which respects current teaching methods utilised by nurse educators at a higher education institution comply or do not comply with teaching methods suggested in literature as essential for theory-practice integration. An exploratory descriptive research design was used to investigate the nature of the teaching methods utilised by nurse educators facilitating theoretical learning. Questionnaires were sent to nurse educators and student nurses registered for the Diploma in General Nursing Science programme. The questionnaire that mainly consisted of closed questions was used to collect and analyse the data. The data were generated at four learning sites of a higher education institution. The validity of the results was verified by an observer in the field for which a structured checklist was used. Results indicated that a wide spectrum of teaching methods were utilised by the nurse educators and that the student nurses had limited internet access at the learning centres. Eight (8) teaching methods, complying with teaching methods identified by literature as essential to enhance theorypractice integration, were used. However, it was evident that formal lectures were overused. It raises concerns as this method does not comply with teaching methods essential to enhance theory-practice integration. In fact, it limits the students’ ability to develop critical thinking and is seen as one of the possible causes of the theory-practice gap. Feedback relating to the teaching aids used showed that the data projector with PowerPoint slides, whiteboard and textbooks were the three teaching aids used most frequently. According to literature, the overuse of textbooks is generally viewed as the starting point of the theory-practice gap. The results of this study imply that an increased awareness and training of nurse educators regarding their teaching methods may increase their teaching and facilitation skills. It seems to be the nurse educator’s responsibility to ensure that teaching methods are used that are essential to enhance theory-practice integration and it is the responsibility of management at any higher educational institution to ensure that the necessary educational and information technology resources are available. It is recommended that further studies be conducted to determine whether nurse educators do indeed apply the teaching methods effectively to narrow the theory-practice gap.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The thermodynamics of three-dimensional, single-component elastic crystalline solids was developed by Slattery and Lagoudas (2005). Considering the in¯nitesimal deformations, the stress can be expressed as a function of the lattice vectors and density in the reference configuration and ¹(I;mn), which is defined as the derivative of specific Helmoholtz free energy with respect to the I(mn). Using the Cauchy - Born rule to connect the interatomic potential energy and the specific Helmholtz free energy, it is possible to calculate the elastic properties of both nano-scale materials such as carbon nanotubes and macro-scale materials such as diamond and silicon. In this study, we used Terso® (1988a) - Brenner (1990b) Potential, Terso® (1988b) potential and Finnis and Sinclair (1984) potential for carbon, silicon, and vanadium systems respectively. Using the interatomic potentials to describe the specific Helmholtz free energy, the elastic properties of graphite, diamond, silicon and vanadium were calculated. This method was also extended to the calculation of Young's modulus of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which are composed of a two dimensional array of carbon atoms. For SWCNT, we get good agreement with the available experimental data. For diamond and silicon, C11 and C12 were consistent with both the superelastic model and the experimental data. The difference of C44 between the calculation and experimental data was due to accuracy of the potential functions.
