Abstract:
The primary purpose of the paper is to study Shakespeare’s plays Twelfth Night (Western literature) through rasa theory i.e. an Eastern literary theory. Rasa etymologically refers to liquid, flavour, taste, elixir, essence, pleasure, beauty. Literary meaning of rasa, as Bharata defines, is that which is relished or enjoyed. He describes rasa as the delight that the readers experience the generalized emotions presented in the dramatic art. Rasa is a study of universal human emotions. “Rasa is the […] study of emotions which deals with the delight, one takes in literature” (Poonam 5). The ultimate goal of rasa theory is to act as a catalyst to enhance aesthetic delight in literature. Rasa as the soul makes the literature alive. “The aim of performance [is] to evoke [sentiment] in the mind of audience” (Keith 314). Dramatic works appeal to human heart. “Rasa theory embraces humanism as a whole. It does not leave out any of the emotions, which could produce rasa. Rasa theory therefore is an all-pervasive humanistic theory” (Fernando 35). Readers appreciate and relish literature that provides aesthetic enjoyment.

Abstract:
Semantic fixity is a transcendental signified. One of the touted aims of literary theory was to topple it. The Indian semantic concept of Vyañjana attempted to do this millennia before. But canonical theories of Rasa established Rasananda as an attainment of absolute coherence and harmony. What this paper calls trans-epistemic praxis is a viable methodology to reclaim the long-lost rupturality (if structurality is resisted, rupturality must be embraced, at least as a neologism) inherent to aesthetics. This is done in a Post-theory context. “Bhanga” (rupturing) leads to “bhangi”, aesthetic charm. It is an aporetic textual disruption that leads to the most fertile indeterminacy of meaning. Modern literary theory set out on a debunking and destabilizing mission of liberal humanist tenets, but got hardened into “doxa”, crystallized structures and hierarchies. This necessitated a theorizing of theory itself. The chronotope of Post-theory gets foregrounded. A crossing of spatio-temporal boundaries gives us the freedom to site Rasa Theory and Indian Poetics as Post-theoretical. Inter-spaces and inter-times are engendered. Deconstruction and Rasa become heterodoxic knowledges to each other, subverting each other honouring the alterity of the other. This exercise liberates Theory from becoming sclerotic. Orthodoxics and monologisms get flouted. Theory is a story. Story is built on the figurality of language. The tropology of language is built on a never-ending desire for signification. This desire never meets with satiation. The concept of “Rati” can be seen as this interminable desire of language. Post-theory is a call to wake up from amnesia, the terrible oblivion regarding the fact that Deconstruction and Rasa are ceaseless streams of reading processes and not rigid and straitjacketed end products. This ruptural aesthetics leads to the rapture of poeisis, the indeterminate significatory process.

Abstract:
In an attempt to distinguish themselves from the increasing proliferation of like projects, some theories, training programmes, productions, sub-disciplines and the like project a kinship with already authoritative voices. This artificial association characterizes the inevitably ‘intercultural’ product not simply as another element in the postmodern mix, but as a truth validated by tradition and transcending the limits of cultural fads. Richard Schechner's self-styled ‘rasaesthetics’ seeks to associate itself with the rasa concept of classical Sanskrit theory. But rasa and ‘rasaesthetics’ have little in common, and Schechner's attempt to project their kinship requires misunderstandings of theatre in India and in the West. Ultimately, ‘rasaesthetics’ is an example of a tendency in dramatic theory not to try to explain phenomena but to try to legitimize practices.

Abstract:
Literature like poetry has aesthetic value along with social value. The expression of emotion is the power of literature that enthralls readers; readers enjoy texts experiencing rasa. This paper aims to analyze Shakespeare’s “My Mistress’ Eyes are Nothing Like the Sun” and Marvell’s “To His Coy Mistress” from the perspective of the rasa theory, i.e. an Eastern aesthetic theory. The poems randomly selected expose hasya rasa experience. The poets exploit hasya rasa to disseminate and propagate pleasure as well idea, thought, like erotic love, frivolous; the experience of hasya rasa is a uniqueness that enthralls readers to read the poems again. The expression and realization of rasa constitute the aesthetic value and power of the poems. The poems selected here demonstrate that the formal and serious poems can be amusing, chucklesome. Although the realization level of hasya rasa may vary from individual to individual as their academic, professional, social status, and age, there is hasya rasa experience in the poems.

Abstract:
Largely left underexplored in rasa studies has been an implication made in the middle of the tenth century that śāntarasa eludes theorization with respect to the theater (nāṭya) but may function within an exclusive theory of poetry (kāvya). A discussion in the Daśarūpaka (“The Ten Dramatic Forms”) and its commentary cryptically imply in the fourth chapter of that work that if śāntarasa is viable at all as a genre of rasa theory, it is medium-specific to kāvya and not possible in nāṭya. Though śāntarasa is a dubious category for theater theory and pragmatics, they seem to argue, it may be acceptable in poetry through a synergy of two theoretical schemas: poetics and Yoga psychology. Reviewing these arguments opens up a larger conversation about the significance of medium to rasa theory and the inherent limitations for conceiving unified theories of art.

Abstract:
AbstractIt is widely believed that the philosophical concept of ‘tabula rasa’ originates with Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding and refers to a state in which a child is as formless as a blank slate. Given that both these beliefs are entirely false, this article will examine why they have endured from the eighteenth century to the present. Attending to the history of philosophy, psychology, psychiatry and feminist scholarship it will be shown how the image of the tabula rasa has been used to signify an originary state of formlessness, against which discourses on the true nature of the human being can differentiate their position. The tabula rasa has operated less as a substantive position than as a whipping post. However, it will be noted that innovations in psychological theory over the past decade have begun to undermine such narratives by rendering unintelligible the idea of an ‘originary’ state of human nature.

Abstract:
The study presented in this article focuses on the signification of the poetic metres and the theory of rasa expounded in Candrakiraṇa, a guide to the composition of kakawin that is preserved in the scriptoriums of mountains. The use of the poetic metres and theory of rasa was examined in the text of Sītā’s letter to Rāma that was taken from the Rāmāyaṇa Kakawin. It was carried out on the three manuscripts of Candrakiraṇa preserved by the National Library of Indonesia (PNRI). The findings show that the use of śārdūlawikriḍita metre in Sītā’s letters results in a form of signification for particular aesthetic experiences (rasa), namely karuṇa (sympathy), bhayānaka (concern), śānta (peace) and śṛṅgara (love).

Abstract:
This article introduces a non-Western approach to mind and creativity, an approach inspired by the notion of sahṛdaya (the appreciative critic) found in the Indian tradition of aesthetics known as rasa. The rasa tradition is preoccupied with a virtual reality governed by the principle of non-duality ( advaita), which we illuminate with another virtual reality—as formulated by the mathematical principle of symmetry in quantum mechanics. Far reaching implications of the principle of symmetry/non-duality for psychology in general, and psychology of creativity in particular, are explored.

Abstract:
This paper explores the philosophy of emotion in classical India. Although some scholars have endeavored to develop a systematic philosophy of emotion based on rasa theory, no serious effort has been made to read the relationship between emotion and the self in light of rasa theory. This exclusion, I argue, is an outcome of a broader presupposition that the 'self' in classical Indian philosophies is outside the scope of emotion. A fresh reading of classical Sanskrit texts finds this premise baseless. With an underlying assumption that emotion and self are inherently linked, this paper explores similarities between the Indian and Chinese approaches.

Abstract:
Like in any other heteronomous art-forms, the practitioners of Indian music and dance ( Bharatiya Sangita) aim at expressing emotions and creating the aesthetic or the “beautiful.” Indian thinkers and musicologists have gone a step further in declaring that Indian classical music ( Raga-Sangita) is the most appropriate means for attaining aesthetic experience and delight, and the most suitable pathway, if not, downright, short-cut, toward self-realization or realization of the Ultimate Reality or Truth. Thus, aesthetics and spirituality make up the very woof and warp of the Indian arts, in general, and Raga-Sangita, in particular. Raga-Sangita is, thus, considered a spiritual exercise ( nada sadhana) to attain salvation ( moksha) through sound. This conceptual article reflects upon and sheds light on the Theory of Rasa, as propounded in Indian Aesthetics, and attempts to make an assessment of it in relation to Hindustani Raga-Sangita. Through this theory, the author examines and explains the different causes leading to an aesthetic experience, referred to as “out-of-this-world” ( alaukika). In doing so, he also brings to light the possible pitfalls which both the performer and the listener should avoid.

Abstract:
Since ancient times, as Tamil and Sanskrit have been exchanging cultural practices, there are similarities in literary and grammatical principles. Many of Tholkappiyar’s literary principles about Meyppadu in aesthetics are found in Bharadhar’s the Sanskrit literary theorist too, who came after Tholkappiyar, in the north. The eight occasions where Meyppadu occurs, according to Tholkappiyar, are seen in Bharadhar’s also. As per Bharadhar Meyppadu is action. The base for the occurrence of these actions is feeling. Rasa is a feeling. Bhava is a Meyppadu. Feeling breaks out of Meyppadu. Bharadhar’s eight Bhavas are comparable with Tholkappiyar’s eight Meyppadu’s. The aim of the study is to prove that Bharadhar’s theory of Rasa in Sanskrit is a follow up of Tholkappiyar’s literary Meyppadu.

Abstract:
Donne is considered one of the greatest devotional poets of English. His devotional poetry reflects the intensity of feeling and inner conflict. The main themes of his devotional poems are the falseness of this world and the sufferings of the soul imprisoned in the body. According to Donne, the solution to all these problems is to obtain the blessings of the Almighty. His 'Holy Sonnets' may be regarded as poems of repentance and supplications for divine grace. Bhakti-rasa also deals with the elements of devotion. Thus, his devotional poetry can be profitably analysed from the perspective of bhakti-rasa. However, the concept of bhakti-rasa is an Indian concept still has not been ignored by writers in any language. The theory of bhakti influenced many prominent writers, Donne being one of mthe most celebrated. The present paper deals with some of the significant inter-connections between the mEastern and Western branches of aesthetics to address the universality and relevance of bhakti-rasa. Donne's poems consist of almost all the features of bhakti-rasa as mentioned in Indian Poetics in general and in Srila Rupagoswami's renowned text Bhakti-rasāmrta-Sindhu in particular. The three sections describe the types and subtypes. A literature review is described in the second section, showing that Donne's poetry has not been studied in the light of bhakti-rasa so far, either in the west or in the east. In the third section, John Donne's poetry is analysed in the light of bhakti-rasa.

Abstract:
AbstractPerinatal experience is posited as generative of psychogenesis: the psychological birth of the infant. The process involves a sentient human being rather than a nonconscious tabula rasa fetus. That birth experience is only traumatic is reductionist. The origins of positively colored affects as well as sexual feelings and even ecstasy may be intrauterine. The importance and complexity of the birth experience can better be described in terms of phases of being that parallel the physical stages of labor. These phases are immanence, obstruence, descendence, experience, ascendence, emergence, and transcendence. Each of these phases encompasses a unique state and dynamic process. Birth as such is shown to be a rich multidimensional experience that is also transformative.

Abstract:
This paper aims to discuss the process of recontextualization of Hindu aesthetics 'taste' in contemporary architectural design. The method is library research with hermeneutic approach on interpreting the Hinduism aesthetics text, as well as comparation with the science of architectural design. Its main literature refers to the Book of Natyashastra by Bharata Muni and its recontextualization process using dramaturgical analogies (Attoe, 1979) and the manifestations of the ‘rasa’ to the visual and architectural arts (Shetty and Bhoosan, 2017) and (Verma and Gupta, 2015). The results show that 'rasa' theory of Hindu aesthetics is relevant to developed into the contemporary architectural design. Relevance is not merely the conformity of the term alone, but also in conformity with the subject matter of architectural design such as science, form, spatial creation, architectural contexts as the present architectural design demands.

Abstract:
The main theories of origin of the European Arctic tundra and subarctic mountain(goltzy)deserts are reviewed, in application to the Kola Peninsula. The theory of «tabula rasa» stated that all plants died during glaciation, and then immigrated fromtheCentral Europe, Siberia, and British Isles. According to another theory, during several Pleistocene glaciations, plants survived in ice-free refugia. Modern bota-ny point of views supports post-glacial migration of species and rather «tabula rasa»theory. The border of the timberline moving up inthe Holocene thermal optimum did not affect the subarctic mountain de-serts, unlike the tundra zone. Based on this, the evolution of the high mountain deserts vegetation probably meant the establishment of groups of species that differ from modern communities of the lower disposed tundra zone. Many types of mountain tundra vegetation, apparently, came from the mountains of North-East Azia; however, many species have been originated from the forest communi-ties. The subarctic mountain deserts have apparently not changed since the retreat of the glacier.

Abstract:
Epistemology is one of three philosophical dichotomies that rises to two main isms to obtain knowledge: rationalism initiated by Rene Descartes (1596-1650) and empiricism initiated by John Lock (1632-1704). As an empiricist, Locke offers the tabula rasa theory to support his argument. Thus, this study aims to describe radically and comprehensively the concept of John Locke's thought from the perspective of epistemological philosophy. This aim is achieved by describing the background and principal works of John Lock on the philosophy of epistemology, including the main ideas, views, and reasoning of his empiricism through tabula rasa theory. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative in the field of philosophy. Data were collected through a literature study, then analyzed hermeneutically with two methodical elements: verstehen and interpret. First, this research shows that knowledge is principally obtained from sensory experience in which the mind is only passive. Second, the sensory experience is obtained objectively (primary quality) and subjectively (secondary quality). Third, external sensation and internal sensation obtained from sensory experience are built into simple ideas to complex ideas.

Abstract:
Bharathanatyam is practiced for the purpose of experiencing aesthetic pleasure by the actor, dancer and spectator (Rao, 1997). According to ancient treatises such as the Natya Sastra, dancing should be experiential, sensorial and pleasurable. When dance is transmitted, do these core values of the practice get lost? How can we heighten sensorial ranges through the facilitation of a shift in the transmission and dissemination of learning the component Rasa (emotion)? Some of the problems present in the current landscape of learning Bharathantayam is problematic due to the codification of the traditional form and the authoritarian style rooted in its pedagogy. This has left many students feeling incompetent and as a consequence, made the form unattainable. The purpose of my intervention is to make the learning of Sringara Rasa (the emotion of love) a component in the Bharathanatyam curriculum, accessible to all levels of dancers. I hope to achieve this through a sequential model that interrogates cognitive activities present in the engagement of a role or character performing the emotion. My intervention aims at reexamining the theory and practice of Padams (poetic texts) rooted in the Sringara Rasa (emotion of love) and bridging the gaps in learning this component. When dancers introspect, it allows them to access the sensorial dimension of Bharathanatyam.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines the novels of the nineteenth-century Bengali author Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay in light of classical Sanskrit literature and the rasa theory and argues that practices of Sanskrit kāvya literature are as dominant in the structural and aesthetic elements of the Bengali novel as are Western forms of novel production. The arguments are located in the reader to suggest that Bankim’s novels train readers to read the Sanskrit past as encoded in the text and as coexisting with the westernized colonial present, albeit in a difficult relationship. The article pays particular attention to the novelist’s adaptation of two forms of Sanskrit prose, the kathā and the ākhyāyikā, and his exploration of the śṛngāra (erotic) rasa. While the Bengali novel emerges after the introduction of its Victorian counterpart, the former is a product of engagement with tensions foreign to the British novel. Exploring this alternative reading practice provides an opportunity to understand how Bengali and Sanskrit—in terms of literature and culture—are part of the lived experience of both Bankim and his nineteenth-century readers, and part of the aesthetic and ethical foundation of the early Bengali novel.

Abstract:
One of the topics in leadership studies that have received much attention today is international leadership, where researchers focus on leadership behaviors that are culturally appropriate to where the organization is located. Paternalistic leadership becomes one of the themes in the study of international leadership. This research explains the mechanisms by which paternalistic leadership influences job performance and contextual performance of employees using the theory of social exchange and the theory of affective events in the organizational. 193 valid responses of employees from various organizations took part in the study. The results of data analysis show that paternalistic leadership behavior has a positive influence on task performance and contextual performance of employees. Furthermore, trust in the leader partially mediates the effect of paternalistic leadership on task performance and fully mediates the effect of paternalistic leadership and employee contextual performance. These findings suggest that the higher paternalistic leadership will increase employee trust in leaders, then through the trust in leader the performance of employees will also increase. The argument in explaining the results is more detail discussed in the discussion section of this article. Keywords: Paternalistic leadership, task performance, contextual performance, trust in leaders, mediation.
