Segal, Robert A. 4. Myth and ritual. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780198724704.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
‘Myth and ritual’ explores the myth-ritualist theory, which proposes myth does not stand by itself, but is tied to ritual. Myth is not just a statement but an action. Whatever the tie between myth and ritual, the myth-ritualist theory differs from other theories of myth and from other theories of ritual in focusing on the tie. The arguments for and against this theory are examined, as is its application to literature. For literary myth-ritualists, myth becomes literature when myth is severed from ritual. Myth tied to ritual is religious literature; myth cut off from ritual is secular literature. Literary myth-ritualism is a theory not of myth and ritual themselves, but of their impact on literature.

Stephenson, Barry. 6. Ritual as performance. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780199943524.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
Cross-culturally, ritual typically includes elements commonly associated with performance events: music or rhythmic accompaniment; dance or other stylized bodily movements; and masking, costuming, and makeup. ‘Ritual as performance’ considers performance theory and performance studies and some of the work of significant theorists in these fields: J. L. Austin and Richard Schechner. By looking at the kōan tradition of Zen Buddhism, Schechner's approach to ritual can be better understood. Schechner places performance on a continuum that runs from efficacy to entertainment. The notions of embodiment and inscription in ritual studies are also considered along with the noetic implications of ritual action, such as pilgrimage.

Full text
Abstract:
The word “ritual” is used in three different, though related, ways. First, ritual is conceived as a kind of action. Second, ritual is a cultural domain, arena, stage, or field, in and out of which people act and are acted upon. Third, ritual is sometimes conceived as an actor in its own right. ‘Definitions, types, domains’ explains the limitations of definitions and assesses the wide-ranging scholarship on what ritual is. There are three concepts that can be distinguished from one another, though their usage tends to overlap: ritualization, rites, and ritual. The differences between religious ritual (liturgy) and political ritual and civil religion, often referred to as ceremony, are also discussed.

Choi, Mihwa. Death Rituals and Politics in Northern Song China. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190459765.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This study inquires into a historical question of how politics surrounding death rituals and ensuing changes in ritual performance shaped a revival of Confucianism during eleventh-century China. It investigates how polarizing debates about death rituals introduced new terrain for political power dynamics between monarchy and officialdom, and between groups of court officials. During the reign of Renzong, in reaction to Emperor Zhenzong’s statewide Daoist ritual programs for venerating the royal ancestors, some court officials maneuvered in the imperial court to return Confucian canonical rituals to their place of primacy. Later, a faction of scholar-officials took a lead in reviving the Confucian rituals as a way of checking the power of both the emperors and the wealthy merchants. By perceiving Confucian rituals as the models for social reality as it ought to be, they wrote new ritual manuals, condemned non-Confucian rituals, took legal actions, and established public graveyards.

Abstract:
This article discusses collective action theory and focuses on three broad tropics. It first examines the growing and extensive theoretical literature that posits a host of structural variables presumed to affect the likelihood of individuals achieving collective action to overcome social dilemmas. It studies how a theory of boundedly rational, norm-based human behaviour is a better foundation for explaining collective action than a model of maximizing material payoffs to self. The article also discusses the link between structural measures and core individual relationships. It ends by reflecting on the challenge that political scientists face in testing collective action theory in light of the large number of variables posited to affect outcomes.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 introduces the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance and its emergence as a key site of cultural debate and performance in the 1990s. It explores ways in which mythology, symbol, and ritual are constantly evoked within the Academy to reinforce, contest, and perform its core values of inclusivity, creativity, and respect for diversity. It examines the impact of practice theory on understandings of performance. Practice theory and performance studies have helped singers, dancers, and musicians recast their activities, not as passive “inscriptions” onto their bodies in socially structured rituals, but as active, intelligent practices, influencing social and cultural space through performance. It suggests that the Academy continuously ritualizes and performs its ethos of creative belonging.
