Abstract:
An increase in permeability of the pulmonary endothelium or epithelium to proteins and other macromolecules is an important part of many types of lung injury. Assessment of lung alveolar-capillary membrane integrity has been the focus of many investigations, but no single method is best for all conditions. Methods using in vitro preparations, such as cell monolayers, provide the most accurate estimates of biophysical parameters defined from membrane theory, but these models may not accurately represent the in vivo condition. Methods using in vivo preparations, such as indicator dilution techniques and the sheep lung-lymph preparation, are more accurate representations of the clinical condition, but considerable assumptions must be made to estimate the parameters of permeability. The most productive studies of lung permeability make use of at least two methods carefully selected according to their strengths and weaknesses. The challenge is to select the right tools for the job and to interpret the results in light of the weaknesses of the methods used. This will lead to a better understanding of the role of altered permeability in the pathophysiology of lung injury.

The article conducts a comparative analysis of the theory and practice of the organization of public supervision in the world and in Ukraine. It is concluded that there is a partial discrepancy between the principles of public supervision and the practice of its implementation. It is stated that supervision is only in words public, but in practice - state. Ukraine is on the path of full repetition of foreign experience in the field of public control over the audit. It is concluded that the concentration of power over the audit profession in a state body that is not subordinate to anyone and is not accountable in the state itself.

Abstract:
This article examines the progress of university knowledge exchange in the United Kingdom over a decade, linking theory, practice and policy. As indicated by the literature, the performance of university knowledge exchange is influenced by institutional and locational characteristics. Data on 133 UK universities between 2003–2004 and 2012–2013 are used in the empirical analysis, which confirms the important roles of institutional (established vs. new) and locational (competitive vs. uncompetitive) characteristics of universities. Nevertheless, it is found that the current policy approach in the United Kingdom fails to consider the heterogeneity of the higher education sector. This is problematic given that a substantial amount of funding has been committed to boosting university knowledge exchange over the past 20 years. In addition, the results suggest that the knowledge exchange policy should not be implemented alone; rather, it should be developed in conjunction with industrial and innovation policies.

Abstract:
Without delving into medieval history, we can expect that after World War I, disarmament issues became an important object of world politics, and after World War II, they took a central place in it. The monstrous destructive power, speed and constant readiness of nuclear weapons, capable of destroying entire states in a few hours, have fundamentally transformed the dialectics of politics and war. Clausewitz’s sacramental formula: “War is (:ontimiation of the policy by other, violent means” - has now become a street with a ‘two-way movement.' These violent means are tangible, influence politics, and sometimes dictate the rules for its behavior. Hence the logic of disarmament: influencing the means of war through agreements on their limitation and elimination to reduce the likelihood of war, to reduce its destructive effects and the economic costs of an arms race. However, practice has shown that these elements of the classical ‘triad’ of disarmament do not always harmoniously complement each other, and often come in conflict with each other. Fundamental disarmament issues remain unresolved to this day or are being re-initiated as the world order changes and science and technology develop. Worse, at the moment, the collapse of the disarmament treaty system built over decades is leading to a new arms race, while there is a possibility of transferring control over their use to supercomputers. At the same time, the half-century history of disarmament negotiations has shown that, with the creation of favorable political conditions, compromises are achievable on the most complex strategic and technical issues - with the goodwill of government leaders, the support of political elites and the persistent efforts of military and civilian professionals.

Abstract:
Amidst their other differences, the defeats suffered by the United States in Vietnam, Iran, and Lebanon have a common explanation. In all three cases American strategy was based on “global commitments theory.” Interests were to be defended and global credibility strengthened by the making, maintaining, reinforcing, and sustaining of American commitments to Third World allies. However, the core assumptions on which the logic of global commitments theory rests are plagued with inherent fallacies. These fallacies can be identified analytically as patterns of dysfunction along four dimensions of foreign policy: decision-making, diplomacy, military strategy, and domestic politics. They also can be shown empirically to have recurred across the Vietnam, Iran, and Lebanon cases. The central theoretical conclusion questions the fundamental validity of global commitments theory as it applies to the exercise of power and influence in the Third World. Important prescriptive implications for future American foreign policy are also discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract Sustainable development is more than an agenda, it is a historical construct rooted in modernity. In response to the global theory of what is necessary to achieve biodiversity targets, Brazil, a megadiverse “developing” country from the Global South, gains international attention due to its differentiated role in terms of providing environmental services. To confront global theory and territorialized practice, the article looks at a protected area that overlaps with the lands traditionally occupied by flower-gatherers in the Cerrado, a tropical Savanna ecosystem. On the base of the case study, the dichotomy society/nature and the mobilization strategies of this grassroot movement are discussed in light of disputes surrounding sustainability, appropriation and usage of natural resources. Results show collective actors whose identity is articulated in the collection of native flowers from the rupestrian grasslands are somewhat successful in their struggle to re-signify the meaning given to ecology and sustainability through the production of counter-discourses to the conservationist paradigm.

Abstract:
Being interested in studying dance in Germany at a university inevitably leads to a department of sport science. Thus, dance (often coupled with rhythmic gymnastics to fuse into one subject) is obligatory within the studies of sport science. Taking a closer look at the practical dance seminars, one can easily identify inconsistencies in the conceptually intended interlinking of theory, research, and practice. However, the subject of dance at German universities is factually constrained with the enforced aim of exercising students in dance techniques and skills, and therefore it disregards the scientific claims of a predominant amount of theoretical and scientific theory and reflection.

During the last hour we spoke about the transformation of opera into music drama, and I explained the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk. So that nobody has any excuses, I'll write on the blackboard once more the names ofRichard WagnerRichard StraussNow we come to a new chapter. You'll remember that I read to you from Wagner's texts. They always dealt with gods and heroes and curious concepts like forest murmur, magic fire, knights of the Grail, etc., which you found rather strange. Then there were some difficult thought processes, which you were unable to follow, and also certain things that you could not yet comprehend and are as yet none of your business. None of this was of much interest to you't want to go to sleep. You want to hear music you can comprehend without special explanation, music you can readily absorb and sing with relative ease. … Nowadays there are matters of greater interest to all, and if music cannot be placed in the service of society as a whole, it forfeits its right to exist in today's world.

Abstract:
This research examines the professionalisation of strategic communication as a teaching discipline by exploring perceived tensions within the subject. Higher education is a “battleground” for both professions and would-be professions, and the study offers a deeper understanding of the dynamic tensions shaping the professionalisation process of this discipline. However, there has been limited research in this area within strategic communication. This study is based on qualitative interviews with 25 programme directors of international master’s programmes and leading academics from various parts of the world. The empirical findings show that the interviewees perceive the tension between theory and practice as crucial. Some educational programmes prioritise theory to provide students with a profound understanding of fundamental principles, whereas others emphasise practice to enhance employability and practical skills. The study shows that the perceived dichotomy theory and practice in master’s programmes is oversimplified and involves several nuances and distinctions. The research provides greater insight into how tensions surrounding professionalism arise in emerging fields at the university level, particularly in disciplines that are still establishing their position and trajectory. Furthermore, it raises new questions about how university systems and traditions affect professionalisation processes.

Abstract:
The focus of this research is on the concepts of “communicative strategy” and “discursive practice,” which are frequently used today without being tied to a specific linguistic paradigm. The objective was to clarify whether these concepts can be classified as cross-paradigmatic, meaning they are not limited to a specific linguistic paradigm. The study revealed that despite their apparent similarities, these concepts differ in several key characteristics and are aimed at solving different tasks. Additionally, it was found that the main differentiation between these phenomena occurs at the level of their association with different linguistic domains: discursive practice is an element of discourse (and therefore belongs to the discursive paradigm), while communicative strategy is an element of communication (and is thus considered within the framework of the communicative-pragmatic / linguo-communicative paradigm and speech act theory). Analysis of contemporary research focused on studying communicative strategies and discursive practices showed a prevalence of a more “narrow” interpretation of the concept of “discourse,” which allows for the identification of specific forms of communicative practices within discourse. Furthermore, there is a simplification in the understanding of the implementation of discursive practices.

Abstract:
Abstract During the past decades, agricultural trade is enormously expanded. One of its driving factors is the World Trade Organization. However, regional agreements can give further trade opportunities for the participating countries. Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is one of them. This article aims to give a detailed overview of ASEAN members’ agri-food trade by using the world and regional level data. The country level competitiveness is calculated by four different Balassa-type indices and highlights whether the agri-food trade (practice) of these countries is in line with the revealed comparative advantages/competitiveness of the different product groups (theory). According to the results, commodities with the highest comparative advantages overlap with the most important export products. This confirms a tight connection between theory and practice. It should also be noted that world level values are generally higher than that of the regional levels. Moreover, countries with significant agri-food production (Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Malaysia) can be characterized by higher comparative advantages compared to the other ASEAN member states. These results can help to better understand these countries’ trade specialization and international trade performance.

Abstract:
Purpose The aim of this paper is to present findings from the research project “Oscar – Value for Owners and Users of Buildings” and investigate two research questions: What in early-phase planning of real estate projects and facilities management creates value for owners and users of buildings? Do respondents in private enterprises, public administrations and hybrid organizations have different priorities during early-phase planning of buildings and facilities management concerning which factors creates value for owners and users of buildings? Design/methodology/approach This study is based on a national survey (N = 837) among Norwegian owners and users of buildings where the respondents report their emphasis on economic, social, environmental and physical aspects during early-phase planning of buildings. The data have been analysed through descriptive statistics, ranking of means and one-way ANOVA supplemented with bootstrapping. Findings Many Norwegian owners and users of buildings emphasize short-term financials and seem to overlook recent research concerning what creates long-term value such as life-cycle planning and the buildings’ elasticity, flexibility, generality. Respondents employed by private enterprises seem to have shorter time horizon than respondents employed by hybrid organizations and public administrations. Research limitations/implications Further empirical research in Norway and preferably also in other countries, based on surveys with large random samples of respondents is needed to establish whether it is possible to generalize this study’s findings.
