Abstract:

Coal fired power plants that were built in the past four decades are aging. The main aging mechanisms are creep and thermal fatigue. Creep results from the high temperatures at which the components operate. Thermal fatigue is due to thermal stresses and these stresses result from temperature gradients within the material. Cycling of these thermal stresses accelerate the creep in a process called creep- fatigue aging. The boiler and its final heat exchangers and headers are the main components that are affected by these mechanisms. The aging of these components results in high maintenance costs, reduction of the plant reliability and availability, and contribute to increased safety risks for the plant and personnel. Therefore, there is a need to understand the steady state and dynamic behaviour of the components of these plants in order to predict the stresses that the material experience. This report discusses an investigation to the possibility of modelling the thermal dynamic behaviour of typical boiler heat exchanger components which have to withstand the highest temperature of a Pulverised Fuel Rankine cycle power plant. Thus, illuminating the issues that need to be addressed in modelling such heat exchangers. Modelling approaches of heat exchangers are systematically presented, starting with the use of exact analytical solutions. This is followed by the application of finite volume numerical method. Finishing off with the use of the Flownex software. The exact analytical solutions are used to characterise the transient temperature distribution in solid materials with simplified heat transfer, highlighting the dependence of the solutions on the Fourier number and Biot number. These solutions are further used to calculate thermal stresses generated in the material, illustrating the relationship between thermal stresses and temperature gradients. Furthermore, a finite volume solution is applied to modelling an infinitely long tube. I t is illustrated that for transient conduction heat transfer problems, the solution depends on both physical space discretisation and time- wise discretisation. The numerical solution is verified against the exact analytical solution. Finally, the Flownex software is used to illustrate the issues that need to be addressed when modelling the transient behaviour of a heat exchanger . For this purpose only the average area discretisation scheme is used since it allows for any generic solid structure to be modelled, provided that the appropriate level of discretization is applied. The Flownex modelling starts by modelling transient conduction heat transfer within an infinitely long tube. The Flownex solution is verified against the finite volume numerical solution. The Flownex solution depends on thickness discretisation, especially for thick cylindrical components. Finite tubes are also modelled on Flownex including axial discretisation and layout simplification of the tubes. Flownex is also used to model a heat exchanger bundle using two methods; a tube by tube method and a method that involves the combination of all ii the tubes into one tube. The product of the thermal resistance and the capacitance of the system governs the transient simulations for both methods.

Abstract:
In this thesis an apparatus is designed which enables the testing of thermal power plant boiler tubes against erosion. The apparatus makes use of a tube sample directly cut from the boiler tubes and simulates conditions similar to those prevailing in boilers in lignite fired power plants. The apparatus is composed of three components
a furnace for heating the sample, a loading system which allows application of tensile stresses while allowing the rotation of the sample, and a particle blower that delivers abrasive particles to the surface of the sample. The abrasive material used in the test is mixture of oxides, 90% of which is Al2O3 and the average particle size is approximately 300 µ
m. The unit as designed would allow testing of boiler tubes up to a temperature of 650 C, and particle velocity of up to 50 m/s. The apparatus as tested at room temperatures for four identical samples have yielded very similar erosion values based on measurement of weight loss. At elevated temperature, erosion could be measured by a thickness loss since the oxidation that occurs complicates the erosion measurement. Two economizer material
P235GH and 16Mo3 were tested at 500oC with particle velocity of 10 m/s. The testing has shown that 16Mo3 has better performance than P235GH, the erosion rate differing by 20 percent.

Abstract:
This master thesis describes the co-firing concept, benefits and opportunities of pretreated biomass in pulverized coal boilers for industrial use. Burning fossil fuels, i.e. coal is under immense political pressure as European Union (EU) and other countries are trying to bring down the CO2 emission. Biomass combustion is already a proven technology and it plays a greater role in reducing CO2 emission. The main objective of this thesis is the brief study of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling to examine the co-firing of greater amount of pretreated biomass and pulverized coal in a 200MWe pulverized coal boiler. Here, we exchange around 50 % of existing fuel in pulverized coal boiler with torrefied biomass. Torrefied biomass aids to increase the efficiency of existing coal boiler and cut down the CO2 emission. In this work, two cases of co-firing of pretreated biomass and coal have been investigated by CFD. Firstly, an experimental work was done in a laboratory scale to have few different types of torrefied biomass with different degrees of torrefaction. The devolatilization kinetics and char oxidation kinetics were also determined by experiments and other parameters have been calculated. One important aspect of this work has been to evaluate the performance of torrefaction based co-firing. Therefore, co-firing case has been compared to the 100 % coal feed case to understand the performance of torrefaction based co-firing. Furthermore, fluid flow, particles trajectories, heat transfer, and different emission behaviors have been studied. In addition, mechanisms of corrosion during co-firing have been studied and a guideline has been provided for corrosion model for analyzing the characteristics of alkali metals and their effects in co-firing coal boiler. The outcome from the CFD simulation indicated that boiler efficiency increases and the net CO2 emission reduced with increasing the biomass percentage in the co-firing system.

Abstract:

The heat transfer in the filling phase of injection moulding is studied, based on Gunnar Aronsson’s distance model for flow expansion ([Aronsson], 1996).

The choice of a thermoplastic materials model is motivated by general physical properties, admitting temperature and pressure dependence. Two-phase, per-phase-incompressible, power-law fluids are considered. The shear rate expression takes into account pseudo-radial flow from a point inlet.

Instead of using a finite element (FEM) solver for the momentum equations a general analytical viscosity expression is used, adjusted to current axial temperature profiles and yielding expressions for axial velocity profile, pressure distribution, frozen layer expansion and special front convection.

The nonlinear energy partial differential equation is transformed into its conservative form, expressed by the internal energy, and is solved differently in the regions of streaming and stagnant flow, respectively. A finite difference (FD) scheme is chosen using control volume discretization to keep truncation errors small in the presence of non-uniform axial node spacing. Time and pseudo-radial marching is used. A local system of nonlinear FD equations is solved. In an outer iterative procedure the position of the boundary between the “solid” and “liquid” fluid cavity parts is determined. The uniqueness of the solution is claimed. In an inner iterative procedure the axial node temperatures are found. For all physically realistic material properties the convergence is proved. In particular the assumptions needed for the Newton-Mysovskii theorem are secured. The metal mould PDE is locally solved by a series expansion. For particular material properties the same technique can be applied to the “solid” fluid.

In the circular plate application, comparisons with the commercial FEM-FD program Moldflow (Mfl) are made, on two Mfl-database materials, for which model parameters are estimated/adjusted. The resulting time evolutions of pressures and temperatures are analysed, as well as the radial and axial profiles of temperature and frozen layer. The greatest differences occur at the flow front, where Mfl neglects axial heat convection. The effects of using more and more complex material models are also investigated. Our method performance is reported.

In the polygonal star-shaped plate application a geometric cavity model is developed. Comparison runs with the commercial FEM-FD program Cadmould (Cmd) are performed, on two Cmd-database materials, in an equilateral triangular mould cavity, and materials model parameters are estimated/adjusted. The resulting average temperatures at the end of filling are compared, on rays of different angular deviation from the closest corner ray and on different concentric circles, using angular and axial (cavity-halves) symmetry. The greatest differences occur in narrow flow sectors, fatal for our 2D model for a material with non-realistic viscosity model. We present some colour plots, e.g. for the residence time.

The classical square-root increase by time of the frozen layer is used for extrapolation. It may also be part of the front model in the initial collision with the cold metal mould. An extension of the model is found which describes the radial profile of the frozen layer in the circular plate application accurately also close to the inlet.

The well-posedness of the corresponding linearized problem is studied, as well as the stability of the linearized FD-scheme.

Abstract:
This thesis is focused on the application of advanced methods for evaluating damage to boiler tubes, specifically temperature related damage. The aim of this work is to develop an improved damage evaluation procedure utilizing capabilities of modern approaches. This work describes various types of industrial boiler damage. The main focus is on the most exposed and often the most damaged parts of boilers, which are tube bundles (for example, superheaters). Equipment damage is undesirable and often leads to leakages or even to the boiler shutting down. Therefore, it is necessary to find the problem as soon as possible and make the required changes to prevent further damage. The damage types are divided into five categories based on the damage mechanism. Temperature has one of the biggest influences on damage and it may cause short-term or long-term overheating in the tube bundles. This type of damage occurs when the designated temperature is exceeded and results in reduced creep life. It is necessary to know the real surface temperature history of the tube bundle to estimate temperature related damage, however this is often not available. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate those temperatures based on the available data (i.e. inlet and outlet temperatures and pressures). This is real challenge due to the combination of complex flows of the working substances (mainly flue gasses) and heat transfer. Considering available data, new approach is proposed in order to obtain information required for residual creep life estimation. In the first step, thermal – hydraulic calculation is performed followed by a thermal load estimation of a superheater tube bundle in a natural gas fired boiler, using CFD simulations. In the next step, the surface temperature is evaluated and used to determine the temperature related damage, specifically the creep life estimation. The life expectancy is in some ways influenced by imperfections, and therefore at the end of this thesis the influence of the oxide layer on the inner side of tube and fouling on outer side of tube is described.

Cataloged from the official PDF of thesis.

With the rapid rise in the use of air conditioning systems and technological advancements, there is an ever-increasing need for optimizing the HVAC systems for energy efficiency while maintaining adequate occupant thermal comfort. HVAC systems in buildings alone contribute to almost 15% of the overall energy consumption across all sectors in the world and optimizing this would contribute positively towards overcoming climate change and reducing the global carbon footprint. A relatively modern solution is to implement a smart building-based control system and one of the objectives of this study is to understand the physical phenomenon associated with workspaces conditioned by chilled beams and evaluated the methods to reduce energy consumption.
Building upon the initial work aimed at creating a workflow for a smart building, this thesis presents the results of both experimental and computational studies of occupant thermal comfort with chilled beams (primarily in conference rooms) and the various inefficiencies associated. Results from these studies have helped to inform an optimum location for the installation of a chilled beam to counter the effects of incoming solar irradiation through an external window while keeping the energy consumption low. A detailed understanding of the various parameters influencing the temperature distribution in a room with chilled beams is achieved using CFD studies and data analysis of experimental data logging.
The work converges into a fundamental question of where, how, and what to measure to best monitor and control the human thermal comfort, and a novel technique was presented using the existing sensors which would provide a significant improvement over other existing methods in practice. This technique was validated using a series of experiments. The thesis concludes by presenting early works on hybrid HVAC systems including chilled beams and ceiling fans for higher economic gains. Future work should seek to perform CFD simulations for a better understanding of hybrid HVAC systems, both in conference rooms and open-plan office spaces, and also to design a new sensor that could better estimate human thermal comfort.

Agenbag, Johannes Jacobus. "A procedure for the computation of sea surface advection velocities from satellite thermal band imagery, with applications to the South East Atlantic Ocean." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/23143.

Full text
Abstract:
The research was carried out with a view to developing a procedure for the computation of sea surface advection velocities from pairs of NOAA AVHRR infrared images. The procedure was designed for application to the oceanic regions around South Africa and cognisance had to be taken of restrictions imposed by the specific oceanographic conditions, availability of satellite data, as well as the capabilities of the image processing system used. As a first step, a set of image navigation algorithms was developed, based on elliptical orbit and ellipsoidal earth models. Orbit parameters were obtained from TBUS-bulletins and one or more ground reference points had to be identified on each. The navigation algorithms were then used to develop a procedure for the geometric transformation of images to a Mercator map projection. The transformation procedure was evaluated through use of test-images and the results indicated that the maximum errors which could be expected in the computation of advection vectors were 4-5 cm/sin the north/south velocity component and 6-7 cm/sin the east/west component if two images, 12 hours apart in time, were used for the vector computation. An automatic feature tracking method was tested as a means for computing advection velocities but was found to be unsatisfactory. As a result, a 'semi-automated' procedure was developed. This process is essentially a manual (point-wise) feature tracking procedure into which the template matching technique which formed the basis of automated procedures, was incorporated as a labour saving device. Tests indicated a time saving of 20-40 % on the manual procedure and more rapid computation than with the automated procedure. The feature tracking procedure was applied to three sets of AVHRR images of the South East Atlantic. To assess the precision of the vector computation procedure, two independent vector sets were computed. A comparison of the two sets indicated that the rootmean- square deviation in vector magnitude (speed) was about 6-8 cm/sand in the vector direction, about 31° (12° if very small vectors ≤ 6 cm/s are excluded). The computed vectors compared very well with reported results from conventional methods. The derived vector fields also provide the first really detailed description of surface currents in the sea off South Africa: eg. on the flow field in the southern Benguela Current, the circulation associated with Agulhas Current rings, and advective influences on the transport of fish eggs and larvae from the spawning grounds on the Agulhas Bank to the favoured recruitment area off the West Coast.

Abstract:
Fouling of tube bundles in boilers on the flue gas side affects not only the service life, but also the boiler heat output and increases maintenance and operating costs. Therefore, it is necessary to minimize or completely eliminate this process. This thesis focuses on comparison of the service life and the heat output of the tube bundles with and without deposit in the coal fired boiler. Simulations of flue gas flow in area of tube bundles with and without deposit are performed using ANSYS Fluent software, which shows that the surface of tube bundles with deposit is much less heated than the surface without deposit. The thermal loads of tubes obtained by the CFD analysis are applied to the model, which is created in the program ANSYS Mechanical, where the calculation of the temperature field in the cross section of the pipe is realized. The effect of fouling on creep life and heat output is then evaluated based on simulation results. The results show that fouling increases creep life, but significantly reduces heat output of heavily fouled tubes. Hence the flue gas flows at a higher temperature to the rest of the tube bundle, and the service life of those tubes will therefore probably decrease.

Abstract:
To circumvent the meshing difficulty of the existing numerical methods for composites homogenization, an original finite element method, named Phantom domain Finite Element Method (PFEM), is proposed in this thesis. The PFEM relies on computations of integrals with independent meshes based on a fictitious domain principle. In other words, one structured mesh is used for the entire domain, and independent meshes are used for the inclusions. The inclusion meshes will be related to the structured mesh through a substitution matrix. The PFEM is not only capable of calculating effective properties in homogenization technique with KUBC, SUBC and periodic condition, but also can be used in all the problems which can be solved by the FEM, such as the Dirichlet or Neumann boundary value problems. Numerical experiments in two or three dimensional cases, with inclusions of elementary geometry such as disk, square, sphere, cube and ellipsoid, have been performed to validate the PFEM method. Linear convergences of relative errors with respect to reference solutions such as the Mori-Tanaka model and the Fast Fourier Transform method are shown for thermal and elastic effective properties. We have illustrated some interesting features of the PFEM, such as the total flexibility concerning the inclusions meshes, by showing an example with a very thin pellicle sphere

Abstract:
A key challenge facing the nuclear fusion community is how to design a reactor that will operate in environmental conditions not easily reproducible in the laboratory for materials testing. Finite element analysis (FEA), commonly used to predict components’ performance, typically uses idealised geometries. An emerging technique shown to have improved accuracy is image based finite element modelling (IBFEM). This involves converting a three dimensional image (such as from X ray tomography) into an FEA mesh. A main advantage of IBFEM is that models include micro structural and non idealised manufacturing features. The aim of this work was to investigate the thermal performance of a CFC Cu divertor monoblock, a carbon fibre composite (CFC) tile joined through its centre to a CuCrZr pipe with a Cu interlayer. As a plasma facing component located where thermal flux in the reactor is at its highest, one of its primary functions is to extract heat by active cooling. Therefore, characterisation of its thermal performance is vital. Investigation of the thermal performance of CFC Cu joining methods by laser flash analysis and X ray tomography showed a strong correlation between micro structures at the material interface and a reduction in thermal conductivity. Therefore, this problem leant itself well to be investigated further by IBFEM. However, because these high resolution models require such large numbers of elements, commercial FEA software could not be used. This served as motivation to develop parallel software capable of performing the necessary transient thermal simulations. The resultant code was shown to scale well with increasing problem sizes and a simulation with 137 million elements was successfully completed using 4096 cores. In comparison with a low resolution IBFEM and traditional FEA simulations it was demonstrated to provide additional accuracy. IBFEM was used to simulate a divertor monoblock mock up, where it was found that a region of delamination existed on the CFC Cu interface. Predictions showed that if this was aligned unfavourably it would increase thermal gradients across the component thus reducing lifespan. As this was a feature introduced in manufacturing it would not have been accounted for without IBFEM.The technique developed in this work has broad engineering applications. It could be used similarly to accurately model components in conditions unfeasible to produce in the laboratory, to assist in research and development of component manufacturing or to verify commercial components against manufacturers’ claims.
