This article challenges the notion that the Family Compact was a self-interested clique who stunted Upper Canada’s political, social, and economic development. It argues, instead, that members of the group articulated a dynamic vision for the colony premised on the “balanced” British constitution, state-aided Anglicanism, and a vibrant agrarian economy led by a paternalistic elite. Of central importance to the Compact’s vision for Upper Canada was a longstanding conservative tradition that had its roots in late-seventeenth-century England, and was reinforced a century later by a multifaceted c

This essay points to the historical analogies between the contemporary stage in the Russian political evolution and the classical post-revolutionary periods in the French and Soviet history, known as Thermidorian Reaction. Given the obvious similarity to the well-studied Bonapartism and Stalinism, it is easier to understand the policies of Putin’s regime and predict its further development. By characterizing this period as the Russian Revanchism the author explains, from this viewpoint, the foreign policy of Russia towards the West and predicts an inevitable drive to “regather” the severed his

Are the same places that protested more also the places that decided the revolution’s fate by supporting CDU’s ticket of quick reunification? The revolution is approached through the conceptual metaphor of Thermidor, a conservative backlash to the revolution’s initial radical impulse. Spatial methods are used to investigate the local-level relationships between protest and voting. The article finds a weak link between protest and voting, which suggests that som
