Abstract:
Objective: To describe the characteristics of under-graduate theses, satisfaction and reasons for choosing a topic of study. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study that included two populations, theses and thesis students who were able to support their work from 2015 to 2021 in the Faculty of Dentistry of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (Lima, Peru). Documentary analysis was used at first to record bibliometric data. The survey was used in a second stage to collect information related to the reasons why the thesis students chose their topic and the degree of satisfaction. Results: A total of 269 theses were examined. The theses corresponded to more women (n=142; 52.8%). All had a quantitative approach. The cross-sectional/descriptive design was the most frequent (n=207; 77%). Of the 114 respondents, the majority of them indicated that their thesis topic decision was influenced by a faculty member outside of their advisor (n= 26; 22.8%). A total of 49.1% of thesis students were in complete agreement about what they had learned about research at the end of their thesis. Conclusions: The undergraduate theses evidenced to be developed mainly by women, most of the thesis students were satisfied with the elaboration and execution of their academic work; it was evidenced that the thesis topics are mainly influenced by a teacher different from the thesis advisor, this indicates that the advisors should be more conscious when guiding the student and influencing the thematic, methodological and writing decisions together with the advised. Keywords: Dental Students; Motivation; Academic Dissertations; Satisfaction.

Abstract:
The subject matter of this article is the phenomenon of thesis academic guidance. It is claimed that academic guidance is one of the key factors of the successful defense of a thesis. Factors and conditions of scientific alliance formation are identified in this article. The material represents that scientific alliance formation depends on the trust between the postgraduate student and his advisor, on the one hand. On the other hand, it depends on the style of their work. Three styles of academic advisors’ work and postgraduate students’ style of work are identified and characterized. The correspondence of the style of work of the advisor and his postgraduate student is reasoned. The model of trust in academic guidance is formulated. The methods of the diagnostic assessment of work style, trust and scientific alliance by itself are shown in the article. It is stated that there may be formed three levels of scientific alliance: superficial, deep and very deep. A very deep level of scientific alliance is proved to continue through several generations. The article represents the authors’ experience in working with various advisors.

Abstract:
Describe the high impact scientific production of thesis advisors belonging to accounting faculties in Peru at the undergraduate level for the period 2023. A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out. The study was carried out on the basis of 1,784 undergraduate theses reviewed from the accounting faculties of the nine Peruvian universities ranked in the Scimago Journal Rank 2023 page. The scientific production of the advisors was searched in the Scopus database, as well as their qualification as Renacyt (National Scientific, Technological and Technological Innovation Regulation applicable to researchers in Peru). Only 25 thesis advisors (3.4%) have high impact scientific production. And 52 thesis advisors (7.1%) present Renacyt qualification. From the combination of the results we have that the accounting faculties in Peru at the undergraduate level, only 2.9% of their thesis advisors have made high impact scientific production and in turn have been qualified as Renacyt teachers. There is evidence of the lack of concern of the accounting faculties of the main universities in Peru with respect to the key people in the training process of the accounting professional. This is the position of the thesis advisor who lacks high impact scientific production and his lack of qualification as a Renacyt Professor.

Abstract:
Effective authorial voice in academic writing helps researchers establish the value of their scholarly contributions. However, constructing an authorial voice is challenging for many novice L2 writers. Through tracking multiple drafts of master’s theses written by two Chinese EFL (English as a foreign language) graduate students, this case study investigated changes in their authorial voices and the roles of advisor feedback in this process. We drew on three types of data: analysis of multiple thesis drafts for linguistic and content features of voice; advisor feedback on multiple drafts; and a questionnaire for the student writers’ understanding of authorial voice. The results indicate that the linguistic features of voice in their theses have remained largely unchanged, portraying them as unconfident student writers, but the content features have shown significant improvement, conveying authorial voices of novice researchers in the later drafts. Most of the student revisions followed their advisors’ feedback. The student participants’ questionnaire responses indicate their relative lack of awareness of the importance of language in voice construction. The results suggest that the authorial voice construction of the novice student writers is dynamic, developmental, and interactive with their advisors’ feedback over the thesis writing process. Pedagogically, other than feedback on content features of voice, classroom practitioners could also consider providing explicit instruction of and feedback on linguistic features to help students construct authoritative authorial voice in the academic context.

Abstract:
Purpose of the study: To analyze the students' gendered expectations and evaluation on advising skills and mentoring practices of the Local Thesis Advisory Committee (LTAC) members in the Camarines Norte State College situated in Daet, Camarines Norte, Philippines for academic year 2022-2023. Methodology: The study used descriptive quantitative research design. The respondents of the study were comprised of 42 male, 55 female, and 8 LGBTQ+. A face-to-face interview using survey questionnaire was employed to gather the data and data gathered were analyzed using frequency and percentage distribution as well as the computation of mean. The results were presented in tabular format. Main Findings: The findings revealed differences in preferences for advisor traits as males expected expertise and logical presentation skills, females wanted more guidance in developing the topic and structuring analysis, while LGBTQ+ students desired compassion, interest, and constructive feedback. The male group evaluated advisors as excellent in intelligence and inquisitiveness, while female group in honesty, explicitness, and refined feedback, and for LGBTQ+ advisers as excellent in compassion. All groups faced challenges securing approval and navigating panel perspectives. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study reveals that students, regardless of gender, recognized the importance of advising and mentoring in successfully completing the undergraduate theses. It also emphasizes how higher education institutions can address gender equality and improve thesis writing policies, ensuring that all student across gender groups receive tailored support for a more effective advising experience.

Abstract:
Purpose: To investigate the factors contributing to stress, anxiety, and depression among Vietnamese students before and during their thesis process. Methodology: A Cross-sectional online survey was conducted with questionnaire comprised three parts: (1) demographics, (2) thesis status, expectation, and potential factors influencing stress, anxiety, and depression, and (3) The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) assessment. The collected data was analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test, Fisher’s Exact test, and Path analysis to explore relationships among the surveyed variables to stress/anxiety/depression condition. Results: Among participants, 180 were pre-thesis students, 83 were peri-thesis students, and 212 had completed the thesis. Six factors were identified as significantly influencing stress, anxiety, and depression among pre-thesis students. They included “Pressure from discrimination”, “Pressure from unexpected incidents”, “Good pedagogical skills of thesis advisor”, “Stopping grade-improvement courses when doing thesis”, “Dealing with illnesses that are being treated”, and “Student’s expectations for their future thesis”. Perceived discrimination would directly increase stress score (β=0.16, p-value<0.001), and was directly influenced by factors such as (1) “Pressure from unexpected incidents”, (2) “Good pedagogical skills of thesis advisor”, and (3) “Stopping grade-improvement courses when doing thesis”. Anxiety scores were increased by “Current illnesses” and “Stopping grade-improvement courses when doing thesis” (β= 0.13, p-value=0.002 and β=0.15, p-value<0.001, respectively). Only “Student’s expectations for their future thesis” increased the severity of depression. For the peri-thesis group, strong “Academic supports from thesis-conducting institute” and a “Good attitude of thesis advisor” enhanced the likelihood of receiving administrative supports, thereby decreasing stress, anxiety, and depression scores (β=-0.31, p-value=0.008; β=-0.39, p-value<0.001; and β=-0.42, p-value=0.008, respectively). Conclusions: Thesis-conducting environment, students’ expectations of future advisors and schedules might directly and indirectly impact stress, anxiety, and depression levels among students in pre-thesis and peri-thesis stages.

An increasing number of households use financial planners or advisors. This chapter provides insight into these professionals, their potential motivations, and their interactions with clients. The various regulatory regimes of financial planners and advisors are discussed, including the most common types: registered investment advisers, broker-dealers, and insurance firms. Agency costs associated with employing a financial planner are also discussed, with emphasis on potential conflicts of interest that arise from some compensation structures. Common areas of consumer confusion are highlighted. The chapter also discusses evidence on the use and value of financial advice. It concludes with some recommendations for consumers about selecting a financial planner or advisor.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the nature of governmental policy advice, the roles and methods of governmental advisors, and the range of relationships that may exist between advisors and their clients. Three models of the advisor-client relationship are identified. Model I is the advisor as director, wherein the advisor tends to take control of the advising process, directing the client to take actions to achieve success in governance and policy making. Model II is the advisor as servant, in which the advisor merely responds to the demands of the client for help and guidance in a specific governmental task. Model III is the advisor as partner, wherein the advisor and the government official jointly manage and take co-ownership of the problem to be solved. Factors that lead to the adoption each of these models, the various advising styles that advisors employ, and their differing effects on the policy-making process are also explored.

Full text
Abstract:
An invaluable resource for wealth managers advising individuals, couples, and families, this book explains why human emotions drive all investor behavior and makes a powerful case for why advisors need to be aware of such emotions in advising clients—especially in high-stakes situations. Despite the fact that wealth advisors may employ algorithms, fancy financial models, economic theory, and predictive reasoning to forecast future investment returns, according to seasoned wealth management advisor Chris White, people—in other words, clients—basically decide how much risk to take with their money based on emotional factors such as the love they received as children, early life experiences of loss and “imperfect love,” psychic wounds, and family traumas. A must-read for anyone in the wealth management profession, including wealth advisors, financial consultants, certified financial analysts, and retirement advisors, this groundbreaking book offers a radically new and well-articulated framework for managing relationships with clients as well as the essential tools to advise, mentor, and guide clients in making financial management decisions. Readers will understand how to recognize the emotional and psychological factors behind investor behavior and apply this insight to be a better wealth advisor. The author explains why early childhood experiences of love, joy, and loss and sometimes very subtle family dynamics play a key role in adult investor behavior; why being sensitive to an individual’s unique psychological “systems” is key to being able to accurately assess his or her tolerance and acceptance of risk-taking as part of the wealth management process; what can cause a client’s personality to change, especially in high-stress or high-stakes situations; and how to employ sophisticated client relationship management practices such as curiosity, appreciative inquiry, and powerful questioning to understand clients’ needs at a deep psychological level.

Abstract:
This book guides students through the process of planning, researching, and writing the final version of theses and dissertations. Five major stages of the process are illustrated with multiple examples from the social and behavioral sciences, humanities, and such allied fields as education, social work, and business administration. The first stage, Preparing the Way, describes problems and alternative solutions in working with faculty advisors and in searching the professional literature. Stage 2 explains how to find good research topics and define them clearly for presentation to faculty advisors. Stage 3 describes problems often encountered in data collection and suggests solutions for those problems. At Stage 4, students learn ways of organizing and interpreting information, including classification schemes, verbal and statistical summaries, and methods of deriving meaning from data. The final stage, Presenting the Finished Product, offers guidelines for thesis and dissertation writing and for publishing the results in such media as books, journal articles, and popular periodicals. Stage 5 also includes a chapter about how students can mount a convincing defense of their work during a faculty committee's final oral examination session.

Abstract:
Evidence from the behavioral sciences, notably economics and psychology, has profoundly changed the way policymakers and practitioners present expert advice to consumers. This chapter examines the behavioral science evidence on financial advice and explores its implications for the financial advisory profession. It explains how consumers of retail financial advice respond to certain aspects of the advice in predictable ways, sometimes exhibiting behavioral biases or following certain conventions in their decision making. By recognizing and anticipating these responses, financial advisors can offer a more complete service, offering benefits beyond the strictly financial return. But the behavioral needs of consumers may also provide advisors with incentives that are not strictly aligned with their clients’ financial interests. Finally, the increasing role of technology will play an important role in shaping the financial advisory services of the future.

Full text
Abstract:
Salacuse presents a seven-point, comprehensive system to guide all professionals, from lawyers and consulting engineers to management consultants and financial planners, in the process of wisely and effectively advising their clients. Giving advice is an essential task in all professions. Doctors, lawyers, management consultants, financial planners, consulting engineers, and accountants are called on every day to give wise advise to their clients on what they should do. Some professionals carry out this task well; others do it poorly. The ability of a doctor, lawyer, management consultant, or financial planner to help another person with a problem depends as much on a command of the process of giving advice as on an understanding of medicine, law, business, or finance. Salacuse presents a clear and workable method for understanding and carrying out the advising process. His system is based on basic principles that govern all advising, regardless of the profession or area of life in which the advisor works: Know the persons who will use the advice; help, or at least do no harm; recognize how advice matters and can have serious consequences; negotiate your role with the client; develop a partnership between advisor and client; tailor advice to the life, needs, and objectives of the client, and make that advice clear and constructive; keep advice pure of self-interest, prejudices, and personal shortcomings; and know when to stop. Drawing on examples and cases from virtually every profession, Salacuse shows how to apply these seven principles in a wide variety of advising situations. The Wise Advisoris an indispensable tool for any person who gives professional advice.

Abstract:
The eighth chapter focuses on pitfalls in the development of software services for public administration. The contemporary standard for services is agile process, which helps to lower the risks connected to a more traditional model of project (waterfall) management of technological projects. First, the chapter shows the specifics of agile development in the context of public services, and then it introduces a unique work on the development of an information system, a website and an interface for suggestions for the Brno City Advisory Board for Accessibility. In the development of this software, multiple tensions arose – such as those stemming from the discrepancy between the strategic organizational direction and actual available capacity for such technology developments, the discrepancy between good practice and the possibilities of the contracting authority, and finally, tensions between time and sources, a limited project and the agile process development. Using examples of these tensions, the chapter illustrates its main thesis that the factors of a successful technological project do not so much depend on technology, as on the strategies compensating such tensions, on the overall project organization and the composition of its team.

Abstract:
AbstractThe scarcity of resources in a context of permanent crisis is not only an opportunity but also the only direction in which it makes sense to practice. In our view, there is a generation that has already accepted the challenge and is trying every day to develop antibodies to disillusionment. The Italian Pavilion at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia invited these practitioners to recognize themselves as a “movement.” Titled Spaziale, it referred to an expanded notion of the discipline where the built artifact was not seen as an ultimate goal but as one of the possible tools for intervening in the fabric of relationships between people and places. Nine practices were invited to collaborate with nine advisors – from other fields of creativity – in nine Italian territories representative of conditions of fragility or transformation, with the support of as many local interlocutors. Each intervention represented a chapter in an incomplete agenda of urgent research themes for the national context and for architecture: open questions, traceable to the scenario of transition – not only ecological – that we are facing in these years.

AbstractThis chapter presents further findings from our study on the five health education works led by Kamarra Bell-Wykes and produced by Ilbijerri Theatre Company from 2006 to 2019. These findings draw on interviews conducted with eight practitioners who were involved over the years as performers, production staff, and advisors, a research yarn conducted between co-authors Sarah and Kamarra, and Kamarra’s own critical reflections while putting together this volume. We also analysed documents and data from Ilbijerri’s corporate archive and published works such as those by Clare Keating (‘Chopped Liver’ Evaluation Report. Effective Change Pty Ltd. Melbourne: Ilbijerri Theatre Company. Supplied, 2009) and Blayne Welsh (The Hepatitis C Trilogy: A Case for Indigenous Theatre as a Contemporary Manifestation of Traditional Healing Business. Australasian Drama Studies 73: 20–41. https://search.informit.org/doi/abs/10.3316/ielapa.146479491877297, 2018). This chapter explores the third of three prominent themes within the data: how the works engaged audiences in the health messaging and information and created culturally safe spaces for challenging stigma and promoting community empowerment and self-determination. As such, we continue to argue that the works progress the dramaturgies of wellbeing, strength, and resistance that characterise contemporary First Nations theatre in Australia.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper reviews experience with installation and use of a cycle chemistry expert system. To help power plant operators and chemists to control cycle chemistry and corrosion, the expert system was developed based on industry guidelines and experience. This software uses inputs from plant analytical and other instrumentation and grab sample analyses to determine current water chemistry and corrosion problems and recommend corrective actions. It also verifies the chemical analytical data, automatically produces reports, and provides cycle and water treatment descriptions. Using this program, the status of the cycle chemistry for multiple units can be monitored simultaneously through the utility's computer network. The plant customized Simulators allow operators and chemists to be trained in water chemistry control and problem recognition for their specific power plant. This program currently covers drum and once-through boiler units with and without condensate polishers, using acid and alkali-forming cooling water, all-ferrous and mixed metallurgy, and phosphate, equilibrium phosphate, sodium hydroxide, AVT, and oxygenated treatments. The experiences with installation of this software at five locations is summarized and, based on this experience, recommendations for future work are presented.

Abstract:
Abstract In October of 2003, USDOT issued an advisory to operators of hazardous gas and liquid pipelines. The advisory requires pipeline operators to determine susceptibility to SCC along their pipelines, and to identify and manage SCC in segments where conditions indicating such susceptibility are found. Sophisticated inspection methods with demonstrated process capabilities for detecting and sizing SCC are available. However, because of the high cost of implementing such technologies, operators have searched for more economical solutions for identifying an SCC threat prior to applying a full inspection process. This paper describes a methodology that combines fracture mechanics evaluation (as suggested by the USDOT advisory) with pre-processing of data prior to full analysis. The methodology enables operators to screen pipelines, demonstrate the absence or presence of SCC at a confirmed confidence level sufficient to satisfy the USDOT requirement, and complete the screening at a reduced cost compared to alternative methods. Details of the SCC screening process and validation of the associated confidence level are presented.

Abstract:
Airworthiness Approval of a Health and Usage Monitoring System as described in Miscellaneous Guidance 15 of the FAA's Advisory Circular 27-1B requires emphasis be placed on the certification requirements and their relationship to the design solution as it matures during the systems development process. A candidate Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) System-of-Systems (SoS) architecture is proposed in which the vertical lift segment and automated information systems are integrated with the sustainment processes. Next generation ground and support processes are introduced and methods used to substantiate reliability, availability, maintainability, and cost (RAM-C) using discrete event simulations based on market specific design reference missions are examined. A step-by-step system design process, including techniques to allocate data manipulation, condition monitoring, health assessments, and prognostics functionality to on-board and off-board system segments from concept design through sustainment with emphasis on certification is presented.

Abstract:
In Japan it is a common practice that the student at the senior year in engineering education needs to conduct a thesis work as a part of the graduation requirement. In most cases he or she becomes a member of a specific research laboratory where the professor provides a thesis project for the student to complete within a year. Engineering Clinic Program (ECP) at the Kogakuin University (KU) is an industry-academia cooperation program where the company provides a project for the students who work together as a team of four to five. ECP replaces the traditional thesis work for the graduation requirement. All projects in ECP coming from the industry are of open-end and of most advanced technology so that the students work on the real world problems just like the engineer in the company. The technical liaison from the company together with the faculty advisor guides the students, although they never give the solution to them. They should come up with some solutions to the problem within the limited timeframe and thus the creative ability and also management capability are cultivated. The students learn how to apply the knowledge learned at class to solving a real engineering problem. The problems the industry provides to ECP are of wide variety and also multidisciplinary in the engineering field. Among them, presented herein are two fluid dynamic problems handled in ECP in the past,: 1) development of accurate droplet measurements in intravenous injection pump, and 2) study of a journal bearing for Jet Pump. How these fluid dynamic problems provided from the industry were handled by the students with the help of the liaisons and advisors are described in this paper.

Abstract:
The execution of academic researches - such as Undergraduate work, Master’s or PhD Thesis - is often supervised by a research advisor. The development process of such works could be characterized as face-to-face, remote or blended orientation, which combines both of former ones. The construction of a proposal for blended academic orientation involves mapping and analysis of elements, as well as didactical and communication structures that would differs face-to-face meetings from virtual interactions. The paper presents some considerations about relevant characteristics related to digital generation and learning theories that value interaction in order to built knowledge, thus allowing the determination of a blended methodology that aims to enhance intrinsic motivation and investigative posture of students at any level.

Abstract:
Within the framework of an economic laboratory experiment, we investigate how Algorithm Aversion impedes the establishment of Robo Advisors. The participants have to cope with diversification tasks. They can do this themselves or they can entrust a Robo Advisor with this task. The Robo Advisor evaluates all relevant data and always makes the decision that leads to the highest expected value of compensation for the participant. Although the high performance of the Robo Advisor is obvious, the participants only trust the Robo Advisor in around 40% of all decisions. This reduces their success and their compensation. Many participants are guided by the 1/n heuristic, which contributes to their suboptimal decisions. Insofar as the participants have to decide for others, they noticeably put more effort into it and are also more successful than when they decide for themselves. However, this does not affect the acceptance of the Robo Advisor. Even in the case of proxy decisions, the Robo Advisor is only used in around 40% of cases. The propensity of economic agents towards algorithm aversion stands in the way of a broad establishment of Robo Advisors.

Bosch, Sarah. Evaluation of implementation of models of academic advising in post graduate taught courses. Sheffield Hallam University, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.7190/steer/academic_advising_pgt.

Full text
Abstract:
The first aim of this project was to develop evidence-informed models of academic advising for Postgraduate Taught (PGT) courses that was aligned to the institutional Academic Advising Framework, provided a consistently good experience, and yet was flexible enough to cater for diverse courses and student requirements. The second aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of these models. Three main models were created: Model 1 (out of curriculum); Model 2 (embedded approach); Model 3 (extended advising). A fourth, by permission only, student-led ‘Model X’, was also created in response to the needs of particular cohorts and departments. Following model implementation student awareness of the Academic Adviser (AA) role and of who theirs is was significantly greater. There were significant increases in the perceptions that academic advisers provided useful advice and guidance, referred to further support as appropriate, and took a personal interest in them, as well as a decrease in end of year withdrawal rates, post-model implementation compared with pre-model implementation. Comparing models, Model 2 (embedded) elicited the most positive results. A higher proportion of students experiencing Model 2 reported they had the opportunity and took up the opportunity to meet with their AA compared with any other model. Additionally, these students had significantly higher agreement that their AA takes a personal interest in them and that they provide useful advice and guidance to aid academic progress and development. Thematic analysis qualitative data, pre- and post-implementation revealed six themes: Academic, Professional, Personal, Relational, Contact and AA Model. Based on the evaluation and research conducted by the working group we have the following recommendations: 1. The importance of Academic Advising in PGT courses should not be understated. 2. Academic Advising should be embedded in curriculum (Model 2), where possible. 3. Model 3 is strongly recommended for courses with high proportions of international students.

This document contains the PowerPoint presentation, the handout, and the script for an interactive theater-based training we created for inclusive graduate advising. The scripts and scenarios were drawn from a graduate student inclusion education research study conducted by FIU student researchers. We created scenarios of inequity on their basis and helped scaffold participants to be able to respond to the inequities. The Bystander Intervention process (adapted from the FIU ADVANCE team) was: Notice, Interpret, Take responsibility, Think strategically, and Act. The decision for how to act in response to the marginalization included actions which are more immediate or more delayed, and more direct or more indirect. This framework and interactive training helps graduate advisors consider the importance of responding to marginalization and inequity and a range of helpful options when doing so.

[Extract] In 2019 Playgroup Australia established a National Advisory Group, including representatives from government, not-for-profit, community and research sectors, to support the development of a National Playgroup Statement. The forthcoming statement is intended to provide a unifying voice for playgroup provision in practice, research and policy nationwide. Two core strategies were recommended by the National Advisory Group to support the development of the Playgroup Statement. These were: a) a literature review canvassing the existing evidence base of outcomes and benefits of playgroup participation for children and families; and b) a stakeholder consultation strategy to capture children’s and families’ experiences and perspectives of playgroup participation, and the impact of playgroup participation on their lives. This report details the findings from the stakeholder consultation strategy.

Abstract:
The FSA’s Scientific Advisory Committees (SACs) are non-statutory and advisory non-departmental public bodies (ANDPBs) or Departmental Expert Committees (DECs) which are subject to review under the Cabinet Office’s ‘Guidance for the Review of Public Bodies’. In August 2022, the FSA set out the intention to review all 8 SACs per the guidelines, including an independent review of the Science Council (SC) and Advisory Committee for Social Sciences (ACSS). The FSA has completed an internal review of three of its SACs, and one review encompassing all three Joint Expert Groups (JEGs). The FSA commissioned external experts to undertake the independent review and the report and recommendations were submitted at the end of March 2023. The purpose of these reviews is to provide assurance to the FSA, and its stakeholders, that the SACs and JEGs roles and purposes are appropriate in addressing the future needs of the FSA, consumers and wider government, and that the bodies are operating effectively and efficiently. The SC and ACSS were the only two SACs submitted to Independent Review due to this being the first review cycle since they were commissioned in 2017.
