"Performance enhancement of PowerWindow, a linear cascade wind turbine, for application in urban environments." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.7/uws:56569.

Full text
Abstract:
Urban environments have many attractions and difficulties when it comes to the development of wind energy harvesting systems. Critical issues of using these systems in urban environments include noise, aesthetics, integration into architectural systems, and efficient use of the available wind resource. Wind in urban areas tend to be more turbulent and multi-directional. The presence of buildings increases the turbulence of the wind and also deflects the direction of the wind from a horizontal free stream. Aesthetics is also a concern as many people find conventional wind turbines unattractive.

This dissertation reads the three books of Canadian-American poet and scholar Peter Dale Scott’s epic poem Seculum. Scott identifies as a practising Buddhist with a strong interest in Catholic theology and his poetry explores key ideas associated with both systems of belief. I argue that Scott formally employs the number three in diverse ways within the trilogy and that this formula (as in the poetic tercet form) constructs a poesis that is structured on the ruins of a type of Dantean Hell. GWT posits a modular sensory processing system in which sensory inputs are processed in sequestered modality- or feature-specific networks; interaction between modules is only possible if their contents are globally broadcast throughout the brain via long-range connections (i.e., the global workspa

Abstract:
Neuroinflammation is a pathophysiological process present in a number of neurodegenerative disorders, including following acute insults such as stroke, traumatic brain injury including chronic traumatic encephalopathy as well as age-related CNS disorders such as Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Although there is still much debate over the initial trigger for these neurodegenerative disorders, neuroinflammation appears to be a major contributor, and therefore anti-inflammatory drugs including cytokine suppressive anti-inflammatory drugs (CSAIDs) might be p

Abstract:
Bushfires are a natural disaster that has a devasting effect on nature and mankind. The vulnerability of buildings to bushfires has caused enormous loss of property and in extreme conditions, loss of life. It is well known that bushfires invade building structures via three mechanisms, namely embers, thermal radiation, and flame contact. Based on recent bushfire field surveys and numerical simulations, bushfire enhanced wind has also been identified to be a major contributor to building damage. Wind enhancement by bushfires can have a destructive impact on buildings arising from the increasing

Abstract:
This dissertation problematizes the principle of identity in the contemporary understanding and evaluation of traditional music in international contexts. Through a virtual historical revision of England’s folk revival of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, I ask whether it is possible to rethink the concept of traditional music in terms of what Gilles Deleuze called difference-in-itself. The orientation of my historical revision is informed by Deleuze’s concept of the virtual, which concerns the relationship between the past, as it exists in the present without being actual, an

Full text
Abstract:
The fast development of the automotive industry after the Second World War led to the rapid accumulation of waste tyre rubber. Since 1963, finding applications for the use of waste tyres has become the center of attention for many researchers. Using waste tyres in concrete has been proposed by many researchers, but due to its flexibility combined with hydrophobicity, any structural applications of such concrete has been difficult to develop. The mechanical properties of concrete, such as its compressive strength, modulus of rupture and tensile strength, are adversely affected by the addition o

Abstract:
The synchronization of the neuron’s membrane potential results in the emergence of neuronal oscillations at multiple frequencies that serve distinct physiological functions (e.g. facilitation of synaptic plasticity) and correlate with different behavioural states (e.g. sleep, wakefulness, attention). It has been postulated that at least ten distinct mechanisms are required to cover the large frequency range of neuronal oscillations in the cortex, including variations in the concentration of extracellular neurotransmitters and ions, as well as changes in cellular excitability. However, the mech

Abstract:
This thesis aims to investigate how spoken expressions of emotions are influenced by the characteristics of spoken language and the facial emotion expression. The first three chapters examined how production and perception of emotions differed between Cantonese (tone language) and English (non-tone language). The rationale for this contrast was that the acoustic property of Fundamental Frequency (F0) may be used differently in the production and perception of spoken expressions in tone languages as F0 may be preserved as a linguistic resource for the production of lexical tones. Abstract:
Based on qualitative research, this PhD investigated the navigation of post-transition disclosure in a sample of Australians who are gender diverse. 100 participants completed an online survey focusing on disclosure through their lifetime in different social contexts. Semi-structured interviews were then held with 25 participants who varied in age, gender, and sexuality, to develop a more detailed understanding of these varied disclosure experiences. Twelve participants identified as men and/or used male pronouns, and eleven identified as women and/or used female pronouns. One participant iden

Abstract:
The desire to use business intelligence (BI) to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of business decisions is neither new nor revolutionary. The promise of BI is to provide the ability to capture interrelationship from data and information to guide action towards a business goal. Although BI has been around since the 1960s, businesses still cannot get competitive information in the form they want, when they want and how they want. Business decisions are already full of challenges. The challenges in business decision-making include the use of a vast amount of data, adopting new technologies, an

This study addresses the needs of Indonesian policymakers, to not only investigate the determinant factors of FDI inflow in manufacturing sector across Indonesian provinces, but to also investigate the impact of FDI spillover on firm’s total factor productivity growth (TFPG) through product and labour markets and the role of provincial human capital on FDI-TFPG nexus. This study addresses the questions; 1) what is the impact of FDI spillover on the TFPG of Indonesian manufacturing firms in product and labour markets across sectors and within a province by considering different kinds of

Abstract:
Decentralised small-scale wind energy harvesting in urban environments, as one of the potential solutions to tackle the energy crisis and climate change, requires the development of flow enhancement techniques in a fairly turbulent urban wind condition. This study proposes two types of building and façade configurations, including adaptive Double Skin Façade (DSF) and aerodynamic through-building openings, to enhance wind energy harvesting in and around buildings. Depending on their layout configuration, the two proposals form various types of confined aerodynamic duct-shape corridors suitable

Abstract:
This thesis provided new insights into lateral production by addressing the following questions: (1) what are the primary production goals of /l/; and (2) how do the articulatory goals of /l/ production relate to their acoustic properties? To investigate the production goals of /l/ and the articulatory-acoustic relation, a three-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic articulography (EMA) study was conducted with simultaneous acoustic recording. Six speakers were recorded. Sensors were located at key points on the midline and sides of the tongue to track lateralisation. The analyses made use of both
