Abstract:
Although there are numerous similarities between Duhem and Quine, there are strong arguments which suggest that what can be isolated as Quine?s thesis would be unacceptable to Duhem. On the other hand, they both share Duhem?s holistic thesis: empirical statements are interconnected in such a way that they cannot be confirmed or refuted taken in isolation. Since Quine?s holism is more radical, as we shall show, his thesis claims that we can always keep a statement by making necessary adjustments somewhere else in the system. We will try to show that only the first thesis can be rightfully ascribed to Duhem, that these two thesis are not identical, and that they are both different from what is usually called the theses of underdetermination. As we shall see, neither of them speaks about the possibility of empirically equivalent theories. They are, first and foremost, holistic theses which, under certain additional assumptions, have the thesis of underdetermination as their consequence.

“Thesis statement is the main idea of your essay, the central point your essay supports.”[1] It can be regarded as the root of your article, so its significance is inevitable. Writing an effective thesis statement and developing it clearly and logically are necessities for an excellent essay. Where to introduce the thesis statement and how to develop it also affect the logicality and persuasiveness of the essay, so this paper will focus on the thesis statements of five essays and analyze where they are introduced and how they develop in the articles respectively in order to find their influence on the logicality and persuasiveness of the essay.

Abstract:
In this paper, I defend Austin?s thesis that performatives are not statements by definition. Austin claimed that if promises are statements, we would not talk about promises anymore, but rather about statements. He also relativized the distinction between performatives and constatives. I assess whether such a relativization corroborates the claim that performatives are statements. I also criticize Kent Bach?s thesis that explicit performatives are statements. Nevertheless, I endorse a view that some performatives are statements (so-called performative statements). Another thesis I am going to reject is that performatives should primarily be considered as statements, and secondarily as promises, pieces of advice, and so on.

From 90 students 54 student researchers obtained responses on attitudes about two statements involving labor unions and government power. Their prior attitudes were not independent of recognition of the thesis of the work rule satirical statement, but those who agreed in advance with the power structure thesis tended to show related attitudes. Different factors may interact in various ways.

117 college students were either told or not told in advance the thesis of a satire ridiculing the idea that capital punishment is a deterrent to murder. Subjects were then asked whether they agreed with the statement that capital punishment is a deterrent to murder. Those not told the thesis in advance were also asked to identify which of five statements was the thesis. There may be a relationship between knowing a satire's thesis in advance and the persuasiveness of that satire. There also seems to be an association between perceiving a thesis while reading it and the satire's persuasiveness. The results tend to support those of prior studies.

Abstract:
Property-identical divine-command theory (PDCT) is the view that being obligatory is identical to being commanded by God in just the way that being water is identical to being H2O. If these identity statements are true, then they express necessary a posteriori truths. PDCT has been defended in Robert M. Adams (1987) and William Alston (1990). More recently Mark C. Murphy (2002) has argued that property-identical divine-command theory is inconsistent with two well-known and well-received theses: the free-command thesis and the supervenience thesis. I show that Murphy's argument is vitiated by mistaken assumptions about the substitutivity of metaphysical identicals in contexts of supervenience. The free-command thesis and the supervenience thesis therefore pose no serious threat to PDCT.

Abstract:
In his recent book, Causation: A Realistic Approach, Michael Tooley discusses the following thesis, which he calls the ‘thesis of the Humean Supervenience of Causal Relations’:(T) The truth values of all singular causal statements are logically determined by the truth values of statements of causal laws, together with the truth values of non-causal statements about particulars (p. 182).(T) represents one version of the ‘Humean’ idea that there is no more factual content to the claim that two particular events are causally connected than that they occur, instantiate some law or regularity, and perhaps bear some appropriate non-causal (e.g. spatio-temporal) to each other. This is an idea that is tacitly or explicitly assumed in most familiar accounts of singular causal statements. For example (T) is assumed by many probabilistic theories of singular causal statements, by theories which attempt to analyse singular causal statements in terms of necessary and sufficient conditions, and, as I shall argue below, by David Lewis' counterfactual theory.

Abstract:
The starting point of the investigations undertaken in the article is the thesis of empirical indeterminacy of scientific theories. According to this thesis the same set of empirical data can be differently explained by different theories, none of which will be found compelling. The reason for that is that no specific theory is a logical consequence of observational statements. This thesis can be so generalized as to include systems of value as well. Theoretical statements serve as justification of observational statements, although the former are not entailed by the latter. Similarly with judgements of value: they justify moral norms but are not entailed by them. Consequently the same obligations can be justified on the grounds of different systems of value. Systems of value are not therefore determined by moral obligations and have the same function in ethics as theory does in science. Systems of value remain, however, radically different from scientific theories because the relations that bind observational statements with scientific observations are quite different from those that bind moral norms with human behaviour in ethics.

Abstract These thesis statements address the ghettoization of theory in the academic study of religion, noting not only the creation of specialized venues for the practice of theory (e.g., the conference section that the theses were originally written to directly address) as a symptomatic response, but also the further isolating effects engendered by the emergence of such discursive spaces. In response to these problems of marginalization, the theses go on to propose practical methods for tactical dissolution in hopes to contribute to the further integration of theory into the wider discipline.

Education researchers have long been interested in helping students develop effective inquiry questions to guide research projects. In this study, students in a journalism senior capstone used writing-studies informed practices such as middle-stakes, iterative writing prompts to enhance metacognition and critical thinking. Using prompts to guide students to periodically revise their inquiry questions and working thesis statements, students showed improvement in their written products as measured through holistic writing assessment measures. Despite measurable improvement, students’ thesis statements were still lackluster, suggesting that programs should develop connected curricula that sequentially scaffold research methods, critical thinking, and writing skills across the major.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2002.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Mission and vision statements are concepts that are often discussed at meetings where companies discuss and debate whether or not to implement them to ensure sustained profitability or increase the motivation of employees. This, however, is a misconception in the business world since mission and vision statements do not lead to instantaneous success. Mission and vision statements are strategic tools to help organisations to focus on what they are good at and what they stand for. Mission statements help an organisation to identify which current direction the organisation should be taking, whereas a vision statement helps an organisation to identify where it wants to be in the future. A mission and vision statement provides a goal towards which the people of the company can work so that it can be profitable and endure lasting success. This goal binds the workers of an organisation, resulting in people that are happy since they know what the organisation's core purpose is. They key importance of these statements is that they provide guidance of strategic and day-ta-day operational decision-making. Companies that enjoy enduring success have core values and a core purpose that remain fixed, while their business strategies and practices endlessly adapt to a changing world. The dynamics of preserving the core while stimulating progress is the reason that companies such as Hewlett Packard, 3M, Merck, Sony and Nordstrom became elite institutions able to renew themselves. It is important to realise is that there is no documented proof that organisations that do not have these mission and vision statements are less successful than those that do have them. The dynamic of the concepts developed in Built to Last, i.e. preserving the core/stimulate the progress should be kept in mind. Neither vision nor mission statements are the primary engines of enduring great companies, and bear in mind that visions simply provide the guiding context for bringing the this dynamic to life.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Missie en visie stellings word dikwels by maatskappy vergaderings bespreek.

Abstract:
Customer satisfaction is critical to organizational survival in the restaurant business. Customers are becoming increasingly knowledgeable, with more education, leisure time and income, they demand high-quality and efficient service (LaFleur & Hyten, 2015; Kirwin, 1992; Kirwin, 1991). Organizational behavior management (OBM) is the application of behavioral principles to individuals and groups in business, industry, government, and human service settings. OBM has its roots in the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA), which involves the application of operant and, to a lesser extent, respondent procedures to produce socially significant change in human behavior (Wilder, Austin, & Casella, 2009). Currently, there are limitations and gaps within empirically based research on this subject. The current study looked to evaluate the effect of high-quality statements versus low-quality statements on tipping behavior. There were a total of 71 participants and the current study took place at two Southern Illinois bars. Results showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the high-quality statement group versus the low-quality statement group. The results from this study may be beneficial by providing restaurant staff with empirically based information on regarding variables influencing consumer behavior.

Abstract:
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a behaviorally-based intervention that emphasizes psychological processes related to mindfulness, values, committed actions towards values, defusion from troubling thoughts, and acceptance. ACT is often used with populations who experience psychological inflexibility or stress, but not much research has been done understanding how ACT processes may affect everyday tasks within the common public or within business practices. The present study used a randomized controlled trial to determine the effect that statements related to ACT processes given while receiving a bar tending service altered the outcome tipping percentage from guests. The current research also discussed how each statement used relates back to the various components of ACT. The current study suggests a potential way to increase tips that a bartender or server can receive by providing a simple ACT-based statement to their customers while still maintaining an inviting and friendly environment for entertainment. Results of this study indicated that the use of mindfulness statements was statistically significant, t(53) = 1.68, p < .098. While one of the six prepared and randomized mindfulness statements, “It’s it a nice night for a drink?” used was statistically significant in increasing tip revenue when compared to all other mindfulness statements used and the low-quality control statements used in a one-way ANOVA analysis, F(6, 48) = 1.799, p = .11. Results of this study were not significant for a t-test comparing statements and total tip value received compared to total bill amount t(5) = 0.887, p < .378. Additionally, results of a two-way ANOVA comparing male and female and tip value also displayed no statistical significance F(1, 51) = 0.051, p = .82, F(1, 51) = 1.106, p = .29, with no significant interaction, F(1, 51) = 2.467, p = .12. Lastly, a two-way ANOVA comparing male and female and total tip value received compared to total bill amount displayed no significance as well F(1, 51) = 0.448, p = .50, F(1, 51) = 1.439, p = .23, with no significant interaction F(1, 51) = 0.693, p = .40. Organizational behavior management (OBM) is an area of behavior intervention ripe for ACT research. Future OBM research could extend upon by incorporating the use of ACT, or ACT related processes into everyday business models and behaviors.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 1999.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study project explores cash value added statements (CVAS). a South African innovation. A complete survey is made of all the CV AS published by listed South African industrial companies from 1991 up to 1998. The survey yields a total of 18 listed South African industrials, which started to publish a CV AS in different years. Together, the 18 companies provide a population of 89 cash value added statements for analysis. The aim of the study is to establish how South African companies prepare a CV AS against a background which lacks a formal Accounting Standard on the subject. Secondly. it seeks to unravel any variations and mistakes presentation of published CY AS as measured against a standardized model of CY AS. In order to highlight the variations, a fault bank is created. An analysis of the fault bank reveals a number of differences in the treatment of certain components of a CV AS by listed South African industrial companies. Major deviations from the standardized model of a CVAS involve interest, dividends and taxation.<br>Please refer to fulltext for Afrikaans abstract

Hughes, Clair Patricia. "The impact of outcomes-driven curriculum reform on teacher perspectives of professional practice." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 1999. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/36612/6/36612_Digitised%20Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is the result of an investigation of a Queensland example of curriculum reform based on outcomes, a type of reform common to many parts of the world during the last decade. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the impact of outcomes on teacher perspectives of professional practice. The focus was chosen to permit investigation not only of changes in behaviour resulting from the reform but also of teachers' attitudes and beliefs developed during implementation. The study is based on qualitative methodology, chosen because of its suitability for the investigation of attitudes and perspectives. The study exploits the researcher's opportunities for prolonged, direct contact with groups of teachers through the selection of an over-arching ethnography approach, an approach designed to capture the holistic nature of the reform and to contextualise the data within a broad perspective. The selection of grounded theory as a basis for data analysis reflects the open nature of this inquiry and demonstrates the study's constructivist assumptions about the production of knowledge. The study also constitutes a multi-site case study by virtue of the choice of three individual school sites as objects to be studied and to form the basis of the report. Three primary school sites administered by Brisbane Catholic Education were chosen as the focus of data collection. Data were collected from three school sites as teachers engaged in the first year of implementation of Student Performance Standards, the Queensland version of English outcomes based on the current English syllabus. Teachers' experience of outcomes-driven curriculum reform was studied by means of group interviews conducted at individual school sites over a period of fourteen months, researcher observations and the collection of artefacts such as report cards. Analysis of data followed grounded theory guidelines based on a system of coding. Though classification systems were not generated prior to data analysis, the labelling of categories called on standard, non-idiosyncratic terminology and analytic frames and concepts from existing literature wherever practicable in order to permit possible comparisons with other related research. Data from school sites were examined individually and then combined to determine teacher understandings of the reform, changes that have been made to practice and teacher responses to these changes in terms of their perspectives of professionalism. Teachers in the study understood the reform as primarily an accountability mechanism. Though teachers demonstrated some acceptance of the intentions of the reform, their responses to its conceptualisation, supporting documentation and implications for changing work practices were generally characterised by reduced confidence, anger and frustration. Though the impact of outcomes-based curriculum reform must be interpreted through the inter-relationships of a broad range of elements which comprise teachers' work and their attitudes towards their work, it is proposed that the substantive findings of the study can be understood in terms of four broad themes. First, when the conceptual design of outcomes did not serve teachers' accountability requirements and outcomes were perceived to be expressed in unfamiliar technical language, most teachers in the study lost faith in the value of the reform and lost confidence in their own abilities to understand or implement it. Second, this reduction of confidence was intensified when the scope of outcomes was outside the scope of the teachers' existing curriculum and assessment planning and teachers were confronted with the necessity to include aspects of syllabuses or school programs which they had previously omitted because of a lack of understanding or appreciation. The corollary was that outcomes promoted greater syllabus fidelity when frameworks were closely aligned. Third, other benefits the teachers associated with outcomes included the development of whole school curriculum resources and greater opportunity for teacher collaboration, particularly among schools. The teachers, however, considered a wide range of factors when determining the overall impact of the reform, and perceived a number of them in terms of the costs of implementation. These included the emergence of ethical dilemmas concerning relationships with students, colleagues and parents, reduced individual autonomy, particularly with regard to the selection of valued curriculum content and intensification of workload with the capacity to erode the relationships with students which teachers strongly associated with the rewards of their profession. Finally, in banding together at the school level to resist aspects of implementation, some teachers showed growing awareness of a collective authority capable of being exercised in response to top-down reform. These findings imply that Student Performance Standards require review and, additional implementation resourcing to support teachers through times of reduced confidence in their own abilities. Outcomes prove an effective means of high-fidelity syllabus implementation, and, provided they are expressed in an accessible way and aligned with syllabus frameworks and terminology, should be considered for inclusion in future syllabuses across a range of learning areas. The study also identifies a range of unintended consequences of outcomes-based curriculum and acknowledges the complexity of relationships among all the aspects of teachers' work. It also notes that the impact of reform on teacher perspectives of professional practice may alter teacher-teacher and school-system relationships in ways that have the potential to influence the effectiveness of future curriculum reform.

Duncan, Ashley John. "A user's guide for financial statements of African companies." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/49691.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Africa Centre for Investment Analysis (AClA) at the University of Stellenbosch is undertaking the creation and maintaining of a capital markets database on historical financial and market data of all companies listed on various African stock exchanges (excluding South Africa). This study report aims at establishing a user's guide for the Centre's financial statement database in anticipation that the database will become a comprehensive source of vital market and financial information for investors in Africa. The guide describes the common format that was created so that African companies can be easily compared. The guide clarifies the standardised coding system that was created so that future users are able to access relevant data, and attempts to facilitate the ease of maintaining and developing the database. Some of the coding described in the guide is not original, since an adequate coding system is already available and in use at the Centre, but forms part of this study project since no formal or documented guide to its operation and implementation is available. The guide describes the classification and coding system used for the various countries, industries and companies on the Centre's database. The industry classification system that was developed is not as comprehensive as the global industry classification standard that it is based on, but is adequate to fairly describe the core activities of African companies. The guide introduces the standardised financial statement templates that are (to be) used on the Centre's database, and also describes the individual line items on these. The templates created are such that the annual financial statements of African companies, in conformity with international generally accepted accounting practice, fairly present the state of affairs of the African companies and their businesses. Templates for balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements for the companies have been created. The value of the information on the database is based on the soundness of the data reported in the African company's annual reports, and the interpretation of these when being captured onto the database. The definitions listed in this study report serve merely as a guideline to compensate for the differing accounting rules and practices that exist between countries. Not all listed African companies are recorded on the database. This is because the Centre relies on the contribution of data (like annual financial reports) from African stock exchanges, stockbrokers and the individual companies themselves.

This study proposes a reading of the financial statements of co-operatives operating within the Florentine metropolitan area, with a view to underscoring business aspects of a quantitative and monetary nature. The entrepreneurial nature of the co-operatives is taken as read, focusing as with any other corporate entity on assets and economic results as indicators of success. The financial statements were collected from co-operatives with their registered offices in the provinces of Florence, Prato and Pistoia for the financial years 2004-2007, and the accounts were then aggregated, reclassified and analysed. The observations on the resulting data are then broken down by province and by type of co-operative (A or B).

Abstract:
This chapter discusses cross-examination of witness statements in international arbitration. The direct testimonies of witnesses in international arbitration are increasingly being presented in the form of their written statements-called ‘witness statements’. Some witness statements can be fairly innocuous, perhaps referring to or commenting on documents in the record. Others, however, not only touch on certain subject-matter areas, leaving out areas that are harmful to a party’s case, but they may also distort accounts of certain meetings or other events, or even lie about them. Such statements, if left alone and taken seriously by the tribunal, have a deleterious effect on the case of the opposing party, and must therefore be dealt with by assessing the ways in which a harmful statement by a fact witness may be responded to.

Jonas, Silvia. Modal Structuralism and Theism. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198796732.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
Drawing an analogy between modal structuralism about mathematics and theism, this chapter offers a structuralist account that implicitly defines theism in terms of three basic relations: logical and metaphysical priority, and epistemic superiority. On this view, statements like “God is omniscient” have a hypothetical and a categorical component. The hypothetical component provides a translation pattern according to which statements in theistic language are converted into statements of second-order modal logic. The categorical component asserts the logical possibility of the theism structure on the basis of uncontroversial facts about the physical world. This structuralist reading of theism preserves objective truth-values for theistic statements while remaining neutral on the question of ontology. Thus, it offers a way of understanding theism to which a naturalist cannot object, and it accommodates the fact that religious belief, for many theists, is an essentially relational matter.

The book focuses on the functional semantics of modal Danish particles in statements varying in structure and lexical content. A comprehensive classification of modal particles, groups of particles and their pragmasemantic invariants is presented based on their speech functions. The functional-semantic analysis enabled to identify the communicative and interactive role of particles which are the most subjective units of the Danish language capable of conveying the subtlest nuances of the speaker's attitude to his own statement, to the interlocutor, to the real situation, or specifying speaker's overt and covert communicative intentions and attitudes. The book is addressed to teachers and researchers of the Scandinavian languages, supporters of the anthropocentric approach in language studies, specialists in the fi of pragmatics and functional grammar of Germanic and Russian languages, as well as to students at humanities colleges and universities.

Abstract:
AbstractA Q-analysis generally favors large inter-group differences, whereas consensual statements that are shared by most participants tend to receive less attention, as do unusual views, which characterize small groups of participants. In this chapter, we start by exploring consensus statements and offer some thoughts on their meaning. We then consider views that are outside of the individual horizons of most participants. We identified these views through statements towards which most of the samples tended to be indifferent or neutral.Against the backdrop of these transnational statement preferences, we proceed to discuss irrelevant statements through the lens of “religious outliers”; individuals for whom the statements in question were, in fact, highly relevant and important. We then attempt to characterize these “types” through sets of statements, which were not part of any national prototype, and analyze the subjectivities of those who endorse them, by presenting holistic analyses of their interview narratives. Jointly, these analyses help us assess to what extent we can set aside the idea of national-cultural boundaries in favor of other levels of FQS statement analysis – the transnational and the idiosyncratic.

Abstract:
"This article, generated from the thesis presented in the Master's Program in Education, Art and History of Culture at Mackenzie Presbyterian University (São Paulo – Brazil), refers to research intended, through the analysis of a teaching learning process related to performance in Technical High School, to verify the contribution of learning sequences design as a formative strategy to the professional development of teachers in this context. To support the analysis, we mainly adopted Carlos Marcelo Garcia's studies on teacher professional development and the formal and informal process of learning to teach. In his investigations, the author draws attention to the potential of learning sequences design as a strategy focused on the construction of pedagogical content knowledge and teachers’ professional identity. We were also supported, among other authors, by Lee S. Shulman's work on the knowledge basis for teaching, as well as Donald A. Schön’s studies on the reflective practice inherent in teaching. The research was conducted with a team of teachers from the São Miguel Paulista branch at Senac São Paulo, a professional education institution with a wide presence throughout Brazil. The team of educators was made up within the implementation framework of the IT Technical High School (EMED), a course characterized by its interdisciplinary curriculum. Through the analysis of statements collected from surveys and the examination of reports produced during these teachers’ continuing education process, their various experiences of formal and informal learning at different moments of their training course were recognized, as well as their perceptions regarding the impact of those experiences on teaching learning and teaching practice itself. It is worth mentioning that the period analyzed begins in their first contact with the school (still as candidates in the selection process) and goes up to the conclusion of their first working year at the institution. In this context, and from the information and statements collected, the experiences characterized by the design of learning sequences were described and analyzed with regard to their incidence in their professional development, resulting in the recognition, based on the point of view of educators participating in the research, of the relevance of each activity performed, the main learning process generated, the main challenges and difficulties faced and the possibilities of process improvement."

Abstract:
Proponents of e-commerce have known for some time that limited participation by consumers partially reflects their concern over the privacy of personal information. To address consumer concerns, web site operators have employed security mechanisms, including privacy policy statements to increase their perceived trustworthiness. While empirical evidence is limited, there is some question regarding the ability of privacy policy statements to engender significantly greater levels of trust. The limited effectiveness of such statements may reflect their voluntary implementation, self-enforcement, and\or significant variance (protection and enforcement) from one web site to another. One possible remedy would be the imposition of legally mandated statements. This study examined the efficacy of legally mandated privacy policies vis-a-vis both voluntary statements of varying degrees of protection and the absence of any such statement. The results were mixed, as legally mandated privacy policy statements were found to be comparable to strong voluntary statements, but superior to none, weak or moderate policies. Perhaps more important, the nature of the privacy policy statement interacted with type of information requested.

Abstract:
The concept of mission is still popular both in academic environment and business practices. Mission statements have been accepted as an important part of the strategic management process for organizations of all types; be it public sector, not-for-profit, private, for profit, a multinational or a SME. This paper aims to study the content of mission statements of Top10 commercial banks in Kyrgyzstan. The main objective of this study is to identify whether the mission statements of commercial banks contain components suggested Pierce and David (1987) and Bart and Tabone (1999). Data was based on content analysis of the mission statements and other related statements found on commercial banks’ web sites. Another secondary data on general profile of commercial banks are obtained from their web-sites and other open to public resources. The results show all (11) numbers of components are not incorporated in the mission statements of commercial banks totally. According to obtained data it was done Top 3 rating of commercial banks according to their mission statements. The level of popularity of mission statement components displays the following: products or services, geographic location, statement of purpose and customers are the most of frequent occurrence components. Components like concern for public image, concern for growth and profit, and philosophy are less popular mission components. In the future this study can throw fresh light on researches on other industries and to make relationship between good mission statements and the performance of commercial banks.

Abstract:
We analyse preference inference, through consistency, for general preference languages based on lexicographic models. We identify a property, which we call strong compositionality, that applies for many natural kinds of preference statement, and that allows a greedy algorithm for determining consistency of a set of preference statements. We also consider different natural definitions of optimality, and their relations to each other, for general preference languages based on lexicographic models. Based on our framework, we show that testing consistency, and thus inference, is polynomial for a specific preference language which allows strict and non-strict statements, comparisons between outcomes and between partial tuples, both ceteris paribus and strong statements, and their combination. Computing different kinds of optimal sets is also shown to be polynomial; this is backed up by our experimental results.

Abstract:
In the design process, the requirements serve as the benchmark for the entire product. Therefore, the quality of requirement statements is essential to the success of a design. Because of their ergonomic-nature, most requirements are written in natural language (NL). However, writing requirements in natural language presents many issues such as ambiguity, specification issues, and incompleteness. Therefore, identifying issues in requirements involves analyzing these NL statements. This paper presents a linguistic approach to requirement analysis, which utilizes grammatical elements of requirements statements to identify requirement statement issues. These issues are organized by the entity—word, sentence, or document—that they affect. The field of natural language processing (NLP) provides a core set of tools that can aid with this linguistic analysis and provide a method to create a requirement analysis support tool. NLP addresses requirements on processing levels: lexical, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic. While processing on the lexical and syntactic level are well-defined, mining semantic and pragmatic data is performed in a number of different methods. This paper provides an overview of these current requirement analysis methods in light of the presented linguistic approach. This overview will be used to identify areas for further research and development. Finally, a prototype requirement analysis support tool will be presented. This tool seeks to demonstrate how the semantic processing level can begin to be addressed in requirement analysis. The tool will analyze a sample set of requirements from a family of military tactical vehicles (FMTV) requirements document. It implements NLP tools to semantically compare requirements statements based upon their grammatical subject.

Abstract:
The 2nd year students of sociology in Faculty of Social Sciences in University of Latvia conducted a study “Attitudes of the residents of the Gauja National Park region towards organic and conventional agriculture” during the spring of 2020, under the supervision of lecturers Renārs Felcis and Jurijs Ņikišins, where ecological attitude index has been made on organic and conventional farming (including 4 statements regarding statements of state action). The aim of the article is to describe the index of ecological attitudes and to identify the latent themes of ecological attitudes about organic and conventional farming to reveal in more detailed hidden similarities of 10 statements about aspects of organic and conventional farming. A type of factor analysis (principal component analysis (further ‒ PCA)) was performed in addition to the descriptive analysis to achieve the aim. In the final analysis, 3 components were proposed, the first of which reflects the ecological habits of purchase, the second ‒ the ecological habits of growing and the third ‒ the individual variables on the importance of the expiration of products. The applicability of the statement scale in future research is suggested for discussion and conclusions.

Abstract:
Many false statements in connection with COVID-19 have fueled a number of rumors and conspiracy theories in the world. Politicians tend to use complicated technical systems and information technologies in order to influence people’s consciousness, feelings and social behavior. Under the guise of taking care of people’s wellbeing they pursue their own objectives. The political leaders have challenged the world with their claims and political statements which hypocritically announced their striving to serve for the sake of the nations, but in fact demonstrating their strong will to benefit from the situation. However, their actions are not treated by people as aggression and don’t lead to open confrontation and aggravation of military and political relations. They paradoxically manage to balance between the truth and falsity, demonstrating ambivalence of what they state in their speeches and appeals to the nations. The basic methods of political discourse ambivalence analysis, used in the article, are: (a) fact-checking method, (b) scientific analysis of the evidence, (c) peer-reviewed studies and the others. There has been also used a method of logical comparison of three options of political discourse: Political Statement → Fact → Consequence. The analysis of mass media articles, devoted to Covid-19, has helped the author to systematize the elements of political discourse processing (the politicians’ statements for the good of the people) and political cognition (the actual meaning of those actions, which can potentially lead to confrontation between nations). The author is trying to find out the actual reasons of the growing gap between the governments and ordinary people, between nations in the world.

Abstract:
Following the release of a China–Russia joint statement in February 2022, analysts have argued that the two countries have become strategically aligned. While both share security concerns and even use similar terminology on ‘active defence’, the manner in which they address these concerns and operationalize these concepts is not the same—at least not yet. When applied to nuclear deterrence, the Chinese version of active defence suggests retaliatory action against a nuclear attack while the Russian version indicates pre-emption in the face of either non-nuclear or nuclear aggression. In terms of space, while both are jointly pursuing a treaty on non-weaponization, China’s defence white papers tend towards a brief and vague mention of challenges, as opposed to Russia’s pervasive concerns over an attack in its military doctrines. Thus, while there is similarity between the two countries, there remain notable differences. This paper explores China’s and Russia’s most recent official documents and statements on their respective nuclear and space postures, combined with some corresponding technological advances. It then makes recommendations to European Union member states on topics that could be addressed in future strategic stability talks that include either one or both countries.

This publication from the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) describes the Workforce Framework for Cybersecurity (NICE Framework), a fundamental reference for describing and sharing information about cybersecurity work. It expresses that work as Task statements and describes Knowledge and Skill statements that provide a foundation for learners including students, job seekers, and employees. The use of these statements helps students to develop skills, job seekers to demonstrate competencies, and employees to accomplish tasks. As a common, consistent lexicon that categorizes and describes cybersecurity work, the NICE Framework improves communication about how to identify, recruit, develop, and retain cybersecurity talent. The NICE Framework is a reference source from which organizations or sectors can develop additional publications or tools that meet their needs to define or provide guidance on different aspects of cybersecurity education, training, and workforce development.

[Extract] In 2019 Playgroup Australia established a National Advisory Group, including representatives from government, not-for-profit, community and research sectors, to support the development of a National Playgroup Statement. The forthcoming statement is intended to provide a unifying voice for playgroup provision in practice, research and policy nationwide. Two core strategies were recommended by the National Advisory Group to support the development of the Playgroup Statement. These were: a) a literature review canvassing the existing evidence base of outcomes and benefits of playgroup participation for children and families; and b) a stakeholder consultation strategy to capture children’s and families’ experiences and perspectives of playgroup participation, and the impact of playgroup participation on their lives. This report details the findings from the stakeholder consultation strategy.

Many description logics (DLs) combine knowledge representation on an abstract, logical level with an interface to 'concrete' domains such as numbers and strings with built-in predicates such as &lt;, +, and prefix-of. These hybrid DLs have turned out to be quite useful for reasoning about conceptual models of information systems, and as the basis for expressive ontology languages. We propose to further extend such DLs with key constraints that allow the expression of statements like 'US citizens are uniquely identified by their social security number'. Based on this idea, we introduce a number of natural description logics and perform a detailed analysis of their decidability and computational complexity. It turns out that naive extensions with key constraints easily lead to undecidability, whereas more careful extensions yield NEXPTIME-complete DLs for a variety of useful concrete domains.

The analysis of press headlines from the krosnocity.pl and krosno24.pl news portals in Krosno allowed to distinguish features and ways of creating headlines in the local press: from schematic constructions to metaphors, word games, hyperbolization of events and quoting statements. During the linguistic research, several key functions of local Internet portals also emerged: it is primarily to inform about the most important events from the region, but also to support the development of the city, promote local products and businesses, take care of the good name and the interests of its inhabitants and make their achievements and passions known.

Abstract:
We introduce a new description logic that extends the well-known logic ALCQ by allowing the statement of constraints on role successors that are more general than the qualified number restrictions of ALCQ. To formulate these constraints, we use the quantifier-free fragment of Boolean Algebra with Presburger Arithmetic (QFBAPA), in which one can express Boolean combinations of set constraints and numerical constraints on the cardinalities of sets. Though our new logic is considerably more expressive than ALCQ, we are able to show that the complexity of reasoning in it is the same as in ALCQ, both without and with TBoxes.

Abstract:
Healthy and resilient ecosystems underpin our societies and economies. Collapse of just a few ecosystem services such pollination, timber from forests and food from marine fisheries, could result in a global GDP decline of USD 2.7 trillion annually by 2030. We are not investing sufficiently in nature, resulting in an estimated nature funding gap as high as US$800 billion per year. Redirecting financial flows towards nature-positive investments and activities is critical. Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) play an instrumental role to support a nature-positive future, aligned with the forthcoming post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, the G7 Climate, Energy and Environment Ministers Communiqué of May 27th, 2022, and with the Joint Statement on Nature, People, and Planet endorsed by the 10 MDBs at COP27. This Statement included an intention to work towards a joint understanding of the term 'nature positive' in the context of operations and investments and a goal to develop tools and methodologies for tracking 'nature positive' investments across MDB portfolios. This technical note is a first step towards meeting this commitment. This work presents options for defining nature-positive finance, based on definitions and principles identified in a bibliographical review drawing on global expertise and developing frameworks and taxonomies. Acknowledging the variety of institutional and ecological contexts in which MDBs operate, the report offers a menu of options to screen nature-positive activities as well as a variety of approaches to determine the nature-positive contribution to investments. Finally, the report proposes principles for tracking and reporting on these investments.
