Cowan, Phil, and Guy Forrester. "Behavioural responses of brushtail possums to live trapping and implications for trap-catch correction." Wildlife Research 39, no. 4 (2012): 343. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/wr11127.

Full text
Abstract:
Context The behavioural response of animals to repeated trapping has implications for correction of population and monitoring indices that use catch per unit effort. Failure to account for sprung traps introduces biases into estimates of relative abundance. The time when animals get caught in live traps is often ignored, but it can provide important information about temporal movement patterns relevant to this issue. Aims We assessed changes in the behaviour of brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula), a nocturnal marsupial, in response to repeated trapping and evaluated the potential benefit of correcting a commonly used index of abundance by using time-of-capture information. Methods Possums were live-trapped for three nights each month over a 20-month period in baited cage traps in a 6-ha area of native lowland forest in the southern North Island, New Zealand. Trapped possums were individually identified on first capture. Timing devices were attached to the traps to measure how long after sunset traps were sprung and how that time related to the duration of the trap-night (sunset to sunrise). Key results Possums were trapped, on average, ~1.25 h after sunset. Traps triggered other than by possums were sprung on average 1–2 h later. Possums caught on the first night of a trapping session were caught significantly earlier than those caught on subsequent nights. Previous capture influenced the time of subsequent capture in a trapping session in complex ways, and recapture times were generally earlier than times of first capture. Possums were captured, on average, after 11% of the duration of a trap-night and traps were triggered by animals other than possums, on average, after 22% of the duration of a trap-night. Conclusions The data on time of capture of possums and triggering of sprung traps suggested a need to alter the commonly used correction factor for population indices for possums, because, on average, traps were sprung for significantly more of each trapping interval (i.e. trap-night) than the half a trap-night assumed in the correction factor. Implications Better understanding of possum foraging behaviour is a key to more effective control using traps. In that context, more research is needed to understand the reasons for individual differences in trappability. Although it is theoretically desirable to account for sprung traps when trapping is used to index populations, to reduce biases in estimates of relative abundance, correction of the standardised residual trap-catch index for possums is probably unimportant in practical terms, because most possum control reduces numbers to levels (2–5% trap catch) at which correction of the index is unimportant. The principal exception to this is likely to be when there is a high level of non-target interference from rodents.

Abstract:
ObjectivesIn a 24/7 society, the negative metabolic effects of rotating night shift work have been increasingly explored. This study aimed to examine the association between rotating night shift work and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in steelworkers.MethodsA total of 6881 subjects was included in this study. Different exposure metrics of night shift work including current shift status, duration of night shifts (years), cumulative number of night shifts (nights), cumulative length of night shifts (hours), average frequency of night shifts (nights/month) and average length of night shifts (hours/night) were used to examine the relationship between night shift work and NAFLD.ResultsCurrent night shift workers had elevated odds of NAFLD (OR, 1.23, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.48) compared with those who never worked night shifts after adjustment for potential confounders. Duration of night shifts, cumulative number of night shifts and cumulative length of night shifts were positively associated with NAFLD. Both the average frequency of night shifts (>7 nights/month vs ≤7 nights/month: OR, 1.24, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.45) and average length of night shifts (>8 hours/night vs ≤8 hours/night: OR, 1.27, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.51) were independently associated with overall NAFLD after mutually adjusting for the duration of night shifts and other potential confounders among night shift workers. No significant association was found in female workers between different exposure metrics of night shift work and NAFLD.ConclusionsRotating night shift work is associated with elevated odds of NAFLD in male steelworkers.

Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the effect of the percentage of day and night rations on live weight, carcass weight, and giblet weight of medium type roosters in postal cages. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD), consisting of three treatments with six replications, namely P1: giving rations of 30% day and 70% night, P2: giving rations of 50% day and 50% night, P3: giving rations 70 % day and 30% night. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance at the 5% level. The results showed that the percentage of different day and night rations had no significant effect (P> 0.05) on live weight (694.33 to 699.67 g / head), carcass weight (405.67 to 407.50 g / head), and giblet weight (35.67 to 36.83 g / head). However, the percentage of 30% day and 70% night rations tended to have the best effect on the lowest giblet weight, namely 35.67 g / head for the 7 week old medium type rooster. Abstract:
There is a lack of discussion on the impact of night tourism activities on the quality of life of residents in the area where these activities are held. We adopted the Q method to explore the effect of the night market in Taiwan on residents in the area from the perspective of 4 groups: Long-term neighbors who love the prosperity of the night market, residents who live in the area where the night market is held, residents who dislike tourists but do not mind the vendors, and residents who have integrated the night market into their own life. We discuss and address the conflicts between the perspectives of these groups using social disruption theory, social exchange theory, and empathy. Implications of the findings are described along with directions for future research.

Full text
Abstract:
Populations of house mice were sampled on nine grids in Fiordland National Park between May and November 1999, using live-capture and footprint-tracking tunnel methods. Trapped mice were removed from three grids (approximately 3.24 ha each), and marked and released on the other six. Density estimates were obtained using recapture data from the grids where mice were released (Mh (jackknife) model from program CAPTURE), and rate-of-capture data from grids where mice were removed (Mbh (removal) CAPTURE model). Density estimates were used to evaluate the performance of 4 indices of mouse abundance by contrasting R2-values of their regression on estimated mouse density. Indices evaluated were: minimum number of individuals known to be alive (MNA) (total number of individual mice caught over the course of a trapping session), one-night trap catch (number of mice caught on first night of each trapping session expressed as captures per 100 trap-nights), three-night trap catch (same index estimated from number of mice caught over the first three nights), and tracking-tunnel index (proportion of nine tunnels that had mouse tracks). While MNA, one-night trap catch, and three-night trap catch were all significantly correlated with estimated density, MNA was most strongly correlated, with R2 varying between 0.67 to 0.87 depending on whether 3, 4 or 5 nights’ capture data were used. Variation in tracking-tunnel index was unrelated to mouse density on our grids.

Whalley, James. "Saturday Night at the Movies : Saturday Night Live, Star Comedians and Contemporary Hollywood." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.514263.

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is the role of television programme Saturday Night Live (or SNL) in launching the careers of a significant number of Hollywood film stars over the last three decades. Started in 1975, SNL is a 90-minute comedy variety show broadcast live by the American television network NBC. Since its inception, it has employed regular casts of performers to present comic sketches. Several cast members, including John Belushi, Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Billy Crystal and Adam Sandler, have converted their exposure on the show into film stardom. In exploring the nature of SNL stars' appeal to Hollywood's filmmakers and audiences, the thesis primarily engages in two areas of debate. Firstly, it seeks to continue historicising what has been termed the "comedian comedy tradition" in Hollywood film. It has been noted that the Hollywood film industry has repeatedly turned to comic performers from other media with already well-defined, popular extra-fictional personas for use as star attractions. Certain consistencies have been found in the industry's approach to converting comedians' appeals for presentation within narrative fiction. However, approaches are also affected by historically specific industrial and social factors. I argue that the stars of SNL were instrumental to the development of a new variant of the comedian comedy tradition. Secondly, I suggest that the most important factor in explaining the nature of SNL's influence is shifts in social and cultural values in America since the 1960s. The personas of SNL stars I examine reflect trends in American public opinion connected to generational change. SNL has now employed cast members from across the baby boom generation (those born between 1943 and 1964) and Generation X (1965 to 1982). To consider the impact of generational factors, my analysis is centred around two case studies, the careers of Bill Murray and Adam Sandler.

Jordan, Kelly. "The morning after (the night before) : emancipating spectators in participatory live art." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/17609.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis develops a theoretical framework for the analysis of spectator-participation in live art by examining the performance practices of Guillermo Gómez-Peña's La Pocha Nostra, Marina Abramović, and Gob Squad. It explores the potentialities and limitations of participation from all sides of the performance border, drawing on my experiences as a performing-spectator, watching-spectator, and as an artist-collaborator with La Pocha Nostra. Unravelling the relationship between these roles, it reveals how participation can create a new hierarchy amongst spectators. The thesis offers a new way of looking at the phenomenology of participatory live art by determining these encounters as a complex network of contradictory and interdependent relations, underlined by the "paradox of participation": the duality of holding the position of both performer and spectator at the same time. Accordingly, it argues that these performances constitute a "symmathesy" of participation, to use Nora Bateson's term, which should be viewed as a whole experience rather than as a series of parts. Advancing on from "the emancipated spectator", as outlined by Jacques Rancière, the study reconsiders its meaning within live art. In doing so, it demonstrates how ritual, presence and ethics converge to underpin the transformative and emergent processes that foster and manage participation, while acknowledging the way that imposed sanctions serve to uphold the performance. Moreover, it maintains that spectator-participation has developed into a practice in its own right, and charts the birth of a new breed of spectator who anticipates the possibility of co-creation. It recognises several emerging types of participant, namely the "expert participant-spectator" and the more transgressive "dis-spectator". The thesis establishes that participation can offer spectators a licence to act in ways outside of their everyday political and social reality, at the same time; it calls attention to the lack of consideration and after-care given to spectators post-participation.

Horton, Carolyn Dopson. "The Effects of the Night Shift on Nursing Staff of an Inpatient Hospice Facility." ScholarWorks, 2015. http://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1686.

Abstract:
The night shift environment in an inpatient hospice facility is unique in care and relegates challenging situations for the nursing staff. Using the Parse methodology, the purpose of this project was to explore the challenges faced by inpatient hospice facility night shift nursing staff in providing a continuum of care for dying patients and their families. Nine night shift hospice nurses participated in 45-60 minute interviews. The interviews were conducted in a hospice quiet room or a designated place of comfort for the participant, which allowed for dialogical engagement. The interviews were unstructured with open-ended questions about lived experiences. The interpretive phenomenological approach was used to understand positive outcomes and management involvement and developing positive morale. Descriptive coding was used to collect and analyze data. According to study findings, hospice night shift nursing staff were exposed to the stressors of dying patients, their families, a dissatisfied work environment, and their personal life. The core concepts addressed by the participants were feeling isolated and disrespected, staff development, and using coping strategies. Strong relationships through coping mechanisms were developed on the night shift, but the unmet issues of the staff were poorly regarded. The study perpetuates the need for further research in understanding the experiences of hospice night shift nursing staff and the changes needed to eliminate imminent night shift turnover.

Abstract:
The presented work wants to contribute a new solution based on the analysis of stochastic signals. On the basis of the Dresden Live-Camera-System which is providing real-time information about the traffic state on 31 focal points (March 2005) one is able to use a wide range of image types under different and severe conditions. The method is based on the analysis of stochastic signals derived from the live-camra images. These signals are analyzed with cross-correlation, amplitude- and frequency filters. The resulting data enable the distinction of stable and non-stable traffic flow and the automated identification of traffic congestion. Moreover fundamental diagrams are calculated.

Sapparth, David James. "Refining Topographic Line Maps for Use with Ground Based Night Vision Systems." Queensland University of Technology, 2002. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/15877/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to refine the current cartographic standards and specifications used by the Australian Defence Force to produce the 1:50 000 scale Topographic Line Map (TLM) so that TLMs can be read with both normal chromatic vision and with achromatic NVG vision. The proliferation and integration of Night Vision Goggles (NVG) into the Australian Army has increased the operating capacity of forces at night. The Australian Army has incorporated NVG into standard operating procedures and training to the effect that Australian military personnel do not operate, at night, without NVG. The increased use of NVG in the Australian Army has required existing systems to be modified or redesigned to be effective within the limitations of NVG. The inability to read TLMs effectively with NVG is an identified problem within the Australian Army. This research has investigated the problems associated with using NVG and the information, which cannot be read on TLMs with NVG. This information was compared to a survey of features on a TLM that are critical for successful military operations. The combined information determined which features on a TLM were to be refined to enable effective reading with NVG. The scope of this research limited refinements to current or previous cartographic standards and specifications used by the Australian Army to produce TLMs. Refinements were limited to symbology, size, and colour and three critical information features of contours, watercourses and vegetation. The problems of cartographic design for a dual vision system (chromatic/achromatic) were investigated and it was determined that the common factor of value contrast exhibits the greatest effect on the refinement process. Prototype TLMs were produced and tested with normal and NVG vision to determine the best cartographic portrayal of the critical information features, without compromising the Figure/ground relationship, balance and cognitive meanings of the TLM. A final product was produced from the prototype experiment results providing a TLM for use with both normal and NVG vision. The refined TLM has changed contours from brown to black without changes to symbology or size and watercourses from 0.1mm width to 0.2mm width without changing colour or symbology. Vegetation was retained at the current standard and specification.

White, Amy Victoria. "Hannibal's night time antics: Livy's use of 'The Night' in the third decade to present military operations, develop moral exampla, and examine Rome's past." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Language, Social and Political Sciences, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/9056.

Abstract:
It has generally been thought that Hannibal was a hostile individual and despised in Roman society because of his non-Roman status and his apparent tendency to be deceptive, cruel and savage. Yet, our understanding of Hannibal as a character is limited. This thesis attempts to address his characterisation through an examination of his night-time military exploits, and argue that our knowledge of Hannibal can be expanded upon by examining how Livy characterised Hannibal in his account of the Second Punic War. Furthermore, this thesis takes a fresh approach to Hannibal’s characterisation, considering Livy’s use of ‘the night’ in association with military activity, and revealing that Hannibal displayed traits that the Romans themselves valued. Thus, Hannibal’s character is developed through a nocturnal military setting, and he becomes comparable to Rome’s finest generals, including Fabius Maximus, Marcellus and Scipio Africanus. Similarly, it is also shown that he exhibited Roman military virtus in place of the traits traditionally thought to be synonymous with the non-Roman. By analysing the character of Hannibal in this manner, we reveal that in Roman thought he was an ambiguous character, whilst simultaneously highlighting how the Romans both perceived and used the night within the context of the army.

Abstract:
The unrelenting threat of poaching has led to increased development of new technologies to combat it. One such example is the use of thermal infrared cameras mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or drones) to spot poachers at night and report them to park rangers before they are able to harm any animals. However, monitoring the live video stream from these conservation UAVs all night is an arduous task. Therefore, we discuss SPOT (Systematic Poacher deTector), a novel application that augments conservation drones with the ability to automatically detect poachers and animals in near real time. SPOT illustrates the feasibility of building upon state-of-the-art AI techniques, such as Faster RCNN, to address the challenges of automatically detecting animals and poachers in infrared images. This paper reports (i) the design of SPOT, (ii) efficient processing techniques to ensure usability in the field, (iii) evaluation of SPOT based on historical videos and a real-world test run by the end-users, Air Shepherd, in the field, and (iv) the use of AirSim for live demonstration of SPOT. The promising results from a field test have led to a plan for larger-scale deployment in a national park in southern Africa. While SPOT is developed for conservation drones, its design and novel techniques have wider application for automated detection from UAV videos.

Nie, L., D. B. Fei, S. D. Zhou, H. L. Fu, and L. Tong. "Key Issues on Train Line Planning for Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway." In 2010 Joint Rail Conference. ASMEDC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/jrc2010-36165.

Full text
Abstract:
The Beijing-Shanghai High speed railway line (Hereinafter referred to as “Jing-Hu HSL”) is one of the most important railway lines in the Chinese rapid passenger transportation network and will be put into operation at the end of 2011. Train line planning directly reflects the quality and competition ability of train services. The characteristics of operational conditions and passenger flow of this corridor HSL bring about a few new issues on train line planning like night train operation, train OD sets, cyclic operation, and train stop schedule. For the first issue, a large amount of long distance travel demand put forward the demand for night services, which causes great conflict with the time-window for maintenance work. The confliction can be solved by harmoniously utilizing the parallel lines. For the second one, in view of the differences of technical and economic factors between HSL and conventional railways, high frequency and medium-long distance train will dominate HSL’s train service plan rather than low frequency and long distance trains on conventional railways. Thus, part of long-distance passenger flow has to transfer at some stations. Considering the whole possible ODs over Jing-Hu HSL and the transfer condition of related stations, the optimal OD sets and corresponding transfer plan is suggested. High frequency makes HSL possible to operate trains cyclically to improve service quality. However, with too many train ODs and some special trains, e.g. night train, an incomplete cyclic train operation mode is more practical. The ODs which can provide cyclic service for Jing-Hu HSL need to be identified. For the last issue, although non-stop long-distance train is a very popular kind of service in China, it should be reconsidered for Jing-Hu HSL line because of massive intercity travel demand and regular stops required. Each of the above issues is very complex. What is more, they have close relationship between each other. Due to limited space, the methods used to solve these issues are given in conceptual way rather than detailed description of mathematical model. The research paves the way for future integration study to design an efficient, economic, convenient, and regular train service plan for Jing-Hu HSL.

Abstract:
<p>The controlling of the building climate requires an immense energy consumption worldwide. In modern buildings, the heating energy amount can be reduced into reasonable level by the use of building insulation and low u-value facade parts. In most countries the energy needed for building cooling is a significant amount of the total building energy consumption. At office buildings the necessary cooling energy often exceeds the consumed heating energy. Therefore modern building may use a variety of shading systems to reduce the input of solar radiation into the rooms. Beside manually operated systems especially electronically operated ones seem to be the future standard in buildings.</p><p>Despite their huge comfort and efficiency these electronically operated systems are often limited to higher standard buildings and wealthier regions. Therefore this paper describes as intermediate results of an ongoing research project several concepts of the integration of energy autonomous shading and ventilation systems. All of them base on the use of temperature sensitive shape memory alloy as actuator for the moving of mechanical components. They do not need any electrical energy or electrical components, like controllers, motors or infrastructure. The concept is demonstrated in various applications from shading blinds, shading lamellas, night cooling ventilation or forced ventilation for necessary room air exchange.</p><p>Promising main applications, as night cooling or shading lamellas are investigated and demonstrated in life- size mock-ups.</p>

Palevičius, Vytautas, Tomas Karpavičius, and Mantas Kaušylas. "The Evaluation of Opportunities for the Development of Access for Charging Electric Vehicles in the Territory of Apartment Buildings." In Environmental Engineering. VGTU Technika, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.3846/enviro.2017.113.

Full text
Abstract:
The beginning of 21th century is extremely important for developed countries because of the reduction of their dependence on fossil fuels. The biggest vehicle manufacturing companies are planning to start selling at least one model of electric vehicle and it is expected that by 2025 approximately 10% of the new cars sold worldwide will be electric. In order to reach this goal, some countries are successfully executing an effective electric transport development policy: to create a publicly accessible network for charging electric vehicles, pay incentives for purchasing an electric car, create free of charge parking places and implement other encouraging measures. While analysing world trends it has been noted that the majority of electric cars owners live in private houses. This is due to the fact that people who are living in apartment buildings and planning on purchasing an electric car come across multiple issues when it comes to charging the car at their living area at night. Therefore, the aim of this article is to evaluate the opportunities of developing access points for charging electric cars around the territory of apartment buildings. To achieve this we have raised these main objectives: have the EU member states already foreseen the necessary measures ensuring comfortable charging of electric cars in the territory of apartment buildings?; have the plans for the development of charging facilities in the territory of apartment buildings already been prepared?; which new technologies will be used for the safe charging of electric cars?
