Abstract:
Nano silver has long been known as a highly effective disinfectant, capable of limiting the growth and eliminating many types of mold and bacteria. Nano silver can be synthesized by many different methods, depending on the purpose and requirements of use. Nano silver can be dispersed in solution or carried onto carriers for different applications. However, in solution, silver nanoparticles often tend to bind together, reducing antibacterial activity. In order to promote the antibacterial ability of nano silver and be able to recover and reuse many times, as well as to be able to disperse well into different materials, nano silver is often put on the carriers. In this study, nanosilver was synthesized on the surface of a zeolite by simple methods such as chemical reduction with NaBH4, N2H4 or thermal reduction at 350 °C. Ag+ ions are adsorbed onto 4A zeolite by ion exchange mechanism, then reduced by different methods. The materials were morphologically analyzed by XRD, SEM, EDX methods. Results showed that the method of reducing Ag+ to Ag0 on zeolite surface by chemical agent produce more evenly distributed silver nano-sized particles than the thermal reduction method. The silver content on the zeolite surface of the hydrazine reduction method is about 3 times higher than that of the sodium borohydride reduction method. The highest content of silver nanocarrying to zeolite. Zeolite bearing nano silver has the ability to disinfect against E.Coli with a concentration of ≥ 5 mg/ml. The Ag02/Z sample reducing Ag+ to Ag0 by Hydrazin has the best antibacterial ability against E.coli compared with the remaining samples when the diameter of the sterile ring at the concentration of 20 mg/ml is 9 mm. Akila, Suzanne. "Participation and the Protection of Citizens Abroad in International Law." Phd thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/110015.

Full text
Abstract:
While the concept of protecting citizens abroad is a familiar one in public debate and international law, the practice of protection is little studied. Two ideas define the way in which the protection of citizens abroad is understood. Since the early twentieth century, international legal scholarship has contemplated the protection of citizens abroad through the decisions of international courts and tribunals. Many legal and non-legal measures may be taken to protect a citizen from a violation of international law abroad, yet scholars focus their attention narrowly on international legal cases. The second idea is that protection is a State enterprise. States may be praised for their interventions on behalf of their citizens or lambasted for their inaction. Scholarly analyses focus almost exclusively on State behaviour and preferences, without considering how other actors may influence, drive or inhibit protection. These framing ideas, international litigation as protection and a focus on States as protective actors, obscure other dimensions of protecting citizens from violations of international law abroad. This thesis investigates the nature of participation in the protection of citizens abroad and its significance for international law. It explores the actors who drive and deliver the protection of nationals, the behaviours that constitute the practice of protection, and the motivating factors for protective behaviour. The purpose of the study is to better understand the phenomenon of protection. The thesis examines examples of protection by Germany, Mexico and Australia. I observe that the protection of citizens abroad is a multi-actor phenomenon, where networks of actors form together to produce protective outcomes. Where there is an alignment of values and the opportunity to harness expertise, networks may form to devise strategies of intervention and perform tasks of protection. I propose that, in order to better account for participation in the international order, a more complex view of sovereignty is needed. I argue that the protection of citizens abroad is best understood through the concept of distributive sovereignty, whereby States distribute and delegate their protective functions across a network of State and non-State actors.

Many studies have highlighted benefits of international volunteering, particularly the positive impacts for the volunteers themselves. Adding to this scholarship, the papers in the collection fill an important gap in our understanding of the impact of international development volunteering from the perspective of partner organization staff who work collaboratively with international development volunteers to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. The collection provides insights into negotiated spaces and mutual learning as well as the unique role international development volunteers play as transnational actors by working closely with staff in development organizations. Lombard, Maria D., ed. Reclaiming Migrant Motherhood. Lexington Books, 2022. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781978723962.

Full text
Abstract:
The global landscape is dotted with border crossings that can be particularly perilous for displaced women with children in tow. These mothers are often described by their various legal statuses like refugee, migrant, immigrant, forced, or voluntary, but their lived experiences are more complex than a single label. Reclaiming Migrant Motherhood looks at literature, film, and original ethnographic research about the lived experiences of displaced mothers. This volume considers the context of the global refugee crisis, forced migration, and resettlement as backdrops for the representations and identity development of displaced women who mother. Situated within motherhood studies, this book is at the interdisciplinary intersection of literature, life writing, gender, (im)migration, refugee, and cultural studies. Contributors examine literary fiction, memoirs, and children’s literature by Ocean Vuong, Nadifa Mohamed, Laila Halaby, Susan Muaddi Darraj, Terry Farish, Thannha Lai, Bich Minh Nguyen, Julie Otsuka, V. V. Ganeshananthan, Shankari Chandran, and Mary Anne Mohanraj. The book also explores ethnographic research, creative writing, and film related to refugee studies. The border-crossings discussed in the volume are often physical, with stories from Afghanistan, Syria, Vietnam, Japan, Iraq, Canada, Greece, Somalia, Palestine, Sri Lanka, and America. The borders that displaced mothers face are examined through frameworks of postcolonialism, nationalism, feminism, and diaspora studies.

Abstract:
This book is the second volume of texts curated specifically for The Funambulist since 2011.1The editorial line of this second series of twenty-six essays is dedicated to philosophical and political ques-tions about bodies. This choice is informed by my own interest in the (often violent) relation between the designed environment and bodies. Corporeal politics do not exist in a void of objects, build-ings and cities; on the contrary, they operate through the continuous material encounters between living and non-living bodies. Several texts proposed in this volume examine various forms of corporeal violence (racism, gender-based violence, etc.). This examination, however, can only exist in the integration of the designed environ-ment’s conditioning of this violence. As Mimi Thi Nguyen argues in the conclusion of this book’s first chapter, “the process of attending to the body — unhooded, unveiled, unclothed — cannot be the so-lution to racism, because that body is always already an abstraction, an effect of law and its violence.

Abstract:
Refugee Studies and Vietnamese Studies provide the theoretical concepts for understanding how food can be a primary signifier for the difficulties posed by forced migration in Thanhha Lai’s Inside Out & Back Again. The chapter also uses Vietnamese food and foodways and contemporary Vietnamese-American cookbooks to help explore the cultural clashes and assimilation difficulties of integrating into a foreign environment. Viet Thanh Nguyen claims that the ethical Vietnamese-American writer has the responsibility of writing beyond the conventional history of the Vietnam War and its aftermath known in the United States (tragic loss, grateful refugees, assimilating to American life as a “model minority”). Through food, Lai writes beyond that convention and complicates the experience of Vietnamese immigration, resulting in a transnational shift in identity: “adding on of identity, that effort to adjust” (Arthur Lam).

Richard Nixon and Nguyen Van Thieu's confidence gave way to hubris as each overstepped their political limits in 1970-1971. Even as the Republic of Vietnam made tentative military and economic gains, it suffered political setbacks from Thieu's frustration with his National Assembly and his creeping authoritarianism. Meanwhile, Nixon lost decisive congressional support as he extended the American ground war into Cambodia. The subsequent Lam Son 719 operation in Laos also did Nixon and Thieu few political favors while exposing the hollowness of Vietnamization.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses the social protest movements for rights and freedoms that emerged in the 1970s. It illustrates that South Vietnam's public sphere was pluralistic and robust, and its civil society was effective in ensuring that this realm of public discourse remained free and open. As a result, a high level of engagement was maintained, even though Nguyễn Văn Thiệu's government restricted the press and imposed fines, prison terms, or both on those who allegedly broke the law. Before delving into the various social movements, the chapter first provides a brief sketch of the political situation of the Second Republic, particularly the contentious period beginning with the 1971 presidential election. It could be argued that Thiệu's decision to run unopposed for a second term ignited a maelstrom of antigovernment responses, even from those on the right.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the story “Common-law Wife,” written by Kim Lân. The story describes how a man named Tràng took his new wife home to his village, amid the darkness of hunger and starvation. When Tràng's mother met his wife, tears ran down from her blurry eyes, and she wondered if they would have enough food to eat during the hard, dull days. Mrs. Tứ thought that the young woman must be so desperate and starving that she had to marry her son. Nevertheless, Mrs. Tứ welcomed her daughter-in-law and felt compassion and pity for her. The next morning, they heard the drumbeats coming from the village's communal house, signaling the tax collection. The daughter-in-law felt confused and told them that no one pays taxes in Thái Nguyên and Bắc Giang. They learned that the Việt Minh were attacking granaries and giving rice to the hungry.

Abstract:
The preservation and restoration of Champa temples in Ninh Thuan Province, Vietnam, have been the subject of increasing attention from the government and conservation experts. This study aims to reevaluate the current conservation and restoration efforts and provide recommendations for ensuring the sustainable preservation of these important cultural relics. The research data were gathered between 2010 and 2019, using a combination of archival documents, site surveys, and ethnographic fieldwork. The study highlights that Champa temples are valuable national and special national heritage sites, receiving significant support from the State of Vietnam to safeguard and protect these historical structures. Despite the substantial conservation and management efforts, certain conservation methods have resulted in some limitations, such as testing directly on the body of the tower and modifying the architectural features of the sculptures and new constructions of the Champa temple, which could alter the core meaning of these sites. Therefore, this study suggests that conservationists and researchers must closely collaborate with the Cham community to understand and appreciate the significance of the Champa heritage, while also preserving its cultural and historical authenticity. Overall, this research proposes a reconsideration of the conservation approach, taking into account the cultural context, community values, and long-term sustainability of the Champa temples in Ninh Thuan Province, Vietnam.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The complex fracture network generated from hydraulic fracturing is of great importance for well productivity in unconventional reservoirs. However, numerous natural or induced microfractures are closed without proppant placement after hydraulic fracturing is completed. Micro-proppants have small enough particle sizes and longer transport distances, which can access microfractures and keep them open. The objective of this work is to investigate the particle size distribution, crushing rate as well as microfracture conductivity by micro-proppants from fly ash. Microproppants have a large range of particle size from 1 μm to 300 μm, and the average particle diameters are 22.84 μm and 51.13 μm. The crushing rates of micro-proppants are related to the particle size distributions and mineral contents. More concentrated distribution of particle sizes and higher contents of high-hardness minerals lead to a lower crushing rate of micro-proppants. The fracture conductivity is exponentially decreased with closure stress, and it is controlled by average particle sizes and crushing rates of micro-proppants. The results demonstrate micro-proppants from fly ash are sufficient to the requirements of hydraulic fracturing and improve hydrocarbon production of unconventional reservoirs. 1. INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing is considered the most effective stimulation method for unconventional reservoirs to improve well productivity. The complex fracture networks are created by pumping a large number of fracturing fluids during hydraulic fracturing, which consists of primary fractures, secondary fractures, and induced microfractures. The induced microfractures have small openness of less than 0.1 mm (Danso et al., 2021). For unconventional reservoirs with extremely low permeability like shales, induced microfractures have a large contribution to the conductivity of the fracture network (Sharma & Manchanda, 2015; Grieser et al., 2016; Keshavarz et al., 2016). The 20/40 mesh proppants are usually used to support the primary fracture for high fracture conductivity. The 100-mesh proppants in recent use cannot reach the induced microfractures. Therefore, micro-proppants with particle diameters less than 150 μm (100-mesh) are selected to reach the induced microfractures (Nguyen et al., 2013; Dahl, Calvin, et al., 2015; Calvin et al., 2017a; Tian et al., 2022). The micro-proppants are generally added to the pad fluid before placing the conventional proppant in primary fractures. Field trials have indicated that micro-proppants can improve well productivity up to 50% in unconventional reservoirs such as Wolfcamp, Woodford SCOOP, and Barnett Shale formations (Calvin et al., 2017b; Dahl, Nguyen, et al., 2015; Lau et al., 2019; Radu et al., 2020).

Abstract:
Performability metrics for online services in education Abstract Online services, in general, and web services as the most used services by current online software developers, are provided by various service-oriented providers. In order to evaluate such services a set of metrics to measure the services performability are required. Performability modelling and evaluation integrates both computer and communication system performance evaluation and system reliability and availability evaluation. Recently, in the context of the increasing security requirements, the systems' dependability should be evaluated [4]. This paper review the existed literature and propose the usage of some aggregated metrics in order to model expressions like "high availability", "high performance", "short response time", "high reliability", "high security", and "high dependability". The models consider soft computing approaches like fuzzy numbers, vague numbers, and intuitionistic fuzzy numbers and operators. The analysis covers architectures like grids [2], clusters [3, and clouds[1] (to mention some references) which are used not only in research and business, but also to provide e-learning services.
