Full text
Abstract:
The recent critical focus on men and masculinities purports challenges to the dominance of ‘hegemonic’ or idealised dominant masculine scripts (Connell, 1995). Men’s increasing consumption of image enhancement products and especially facial cosmetics – aspects of so-called ‘metrosexuality’ (Simpson, 1994, 2002) – constitute one such example. Scholars have predominately examined ‘metrosexuality’ from sociological perspectives (Carniel, 2009; Coad, 2008; Miller, 2008) arguing it challenges gender and sexuality through an interest in feminised practices, but also by unhinging it from gender and s

Nathan Field, an actor contemporary with Burbage, is virtually unknown as a playwright. His work reflects the fact that he was an all-round man of the theatre, so Part One is largely biographical, tracing Field's involvement as actor, manager and writer with the Children of the Revels, the Lady Elizabeth's Men and the King's Men. In Part Two, which lays the foundations for Part Three, I investigate Field's authorship, or part-authorship, of six collaborative plays: The Fatal Dowry, with Massinger, The Honest Man's Fortune, Four Plays in One, The Queen of Corinth and the Knight of Malta from th

This thesis is the product of qualitative ethnographic research conducted over ten months. The technological importance of thin films of such materials as amorphous silicon and amorphous carbon has created a demand for convenient and accurate methods of determining the optical properties of such materials when deposited on a variety of substrates. The techniques for the determination of the optical constants of amorphous thin films on transparent, semitransparent and strongly absorbing substrates have been reviewed. Whether the films are transparent or semitransparent and whether the substrates are transparent or strongly absorbing depends not only on the nature of the films and

The Internet of Things (IoT) connects physical objects and services to the Internet, enabling object-to-object and people-to-object communication. The 6A connectivity of the future IoT aims to allow people and objects to be connected anytime, anyplace, with anything and anyone, using any path/network and any service. However, due to heterogeneous resources, existing incompatible standards and difficult communication patterns, the IoT is still constrained to specific devices, networks, and applications. As the standards of Web Services have been accepted globally, most existing IoT platform

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the shifting representation of trash and trifles in the literature and art of sixteenth and early seventeenth century England. It connects previously disparate critical fields – religion, politics, national identity, travel, literary criticism – in order to offer new perspectives on the period. The investigation of the terms ‘trash' and ‘trifles' at the centre of this project reinstates a crucial literary perspective to the historical study of early modern England's crises in spiritual and material value, whilst retaining a keen awareness of the importance of interconn

In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has increasingly received attention from the Business Process Management (BPM) community. The integration of sensors and actuators into Process-Aware Information Systems (PAIS) enables the collection of real-time data about physical properties and the direct manipulation of real-world objects. In a broader sense, IoT-aware workflows provide means for context-aware workflow execution involving virtual and physical entities. However, IoT-aware workflow management imposes new requirements on workflow modeling and execution that are outside the scope o

Abstract:
The following text explores whether programming a computer (especially with hardware-oriented languages like assembly languages) is a “gesture” in accordance with the theoretical concept of Vilém Flusser. The connections between Flusser's theories and computer theory will be searched for a technically accurate definition of computers and computing. Flusser's gestures of “making” and “writing” will be analyzed to see if they are compatible with the text and the operating terms from computer science. The main part of the paper focuses on the questions of what kind of text (in terms of writing) a

Abstract:
Antimony doped Tin oxide (SnO2:Sb, or ATO) is of interest as an alternative to Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) for large area optoelectronic applications. There is a particular interest in the potential for solution based coatings based on nanoparticulate suspensions of SnO2:Sb. However, solution processed films typically require a high temperature (~700⁰C) annealing step to achieve the desired electrical and optical properties. This is disadvantageous for applications that would benefit from low cost, low temperature/flexible substrates. As an alternative to conventional high temperature annealing, ex

In this contribution, we present simulations and first experimental results on the apparent longitudinal relaxation behavior of mobile spins in thin periodically excited slices. This phenomenon is especially of interest in the context of NMR microimaging at extremely high spatial resolution and also for the development of mechanically detected NMR on biological samples under semiambient conditions. In the most simple case, the signal amplitude available in such an experiment is determined by the recovery of saturated in-slice magnetization during the time interval between two excitations. This

The present thesis is about the investigation of ferromagnetic thin film systems with respect to exchange coupling, magnetization reversal behavior and effects appearing in magnetic heterostructures, namely the exchange bias and the giant magnetoresistance effect. For this purpose, DC magnetron sputtered thin films and multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy were prepared on single crystalline and rigid as well as flexible amorphous substrates. We report an influence of disorder on structural and magnetic properties of ZnFe2O4 thin films grown at temperatures ranging from 400°C to 600°C by pulsed laser deposition in O2 atmosphere on SrTiO3 (100) substrates evidenced by properties of electronic transitions observed in the dielectric function. Inversion of the normal spinel structure was found to be one of the main mechanisms responsible for the increase in the magnetic response for the lowest growth temperature.
