Abstract:
In this thesis, I focus on the relation between individuals’ awareness of their mortality and freedom from a phenomenological perspective, which is based on making sense of our temporality with the tools of narrative thinking. I argue that this perspective will shed light on the neglected question, of how the awareness of the fact that every individual will die would have a bearing upon an individual’s freedom. In the first chapter, I argue that a linear understanding of time paves the way for the grand narratives, which eclipse the meaning of death and individual freedom. In the second chapte

This artistic research is an emergent, situated thinking of freely improvised musicking through the lens of queer and feminist theory. It pursues a post-qualitative inquiry founded in collaboratively thinking-with a series of companions: myself as an artist and as a queer feminist, my musicking and thinking communities, six conversation companions, and six companion texts. Along with these companion-thinkers, I explore three entangled points of inquiry: “unmastering” the habits of institutional musicking and the persistent presence of the master-Man; interrogating the notion of “freedom” in fr

Abstract:
This study is concerned with how educational legislation shapes and uses freedom for the purpose of governing the parent. The key question guiding the study was: How does the Act constitute the ‘parent’ as a subject position responsible for schooling the child? Central to the work is an examination of the School Education Act 1999 (the Act) using Foucault’s thinking on governmentality. This is prefaced by historical accounts that bring together freedom and childhood as contrived styles of conduct that provide the governmental logic behind the Act. The study reveals how the Act shapes and uses

Essas três dimensões são entrelaçadas por uma noção comum: a capacidade humana de dar início a algo novo. This thesis is not concerned with how such difficult conflict situations arise. Rather it is concerned with how, from the point of view of the state, they may be contained and ultimately brought to a satisfactory resolution. The work is thus concerned with the practicalities of ending LIC. More specifically, the purpose of this research is to establish a framework of doctrinal and

Gaps in the literature of the New Zealand university in a contemporary context mean that the enquiry is informed by European and North American discussions of the educational requirements of a knowledge society. As the notions of the knowledge society and a liberal university education are both problematic and central to this enquiry, they are interrogated, in the second chapter, in some depth. I work through various inflections of freedom present in modern social thought, including conceptualizations of 'limit-experience', 'care of the self', and those suggested by a relational ontology of the subject.
